arry Corkwell has a quiet way about him, and he embodies the true definition of giving — without expecting compensation. For many years, without any fanfare, he has been raising turkeys from day-old poults to give away as oven-ready birds for Thanksgiving. It’s a good thing the turkeys can’t read for the sign on their pen says “House of Wings.” Corkwell said he raises 18 to 20 birds per year and a local Amish butcher dresses them. This is just one way he has found to bless others. In addition to the turkeys, he has taken a hobby of latch-hook rug-making to new levels by giving more than 90 personalized rugs to residents at Thornapple Manor and to friends and family members. Corkwell has never met most of the recipients at the manor, preferring to leave the finished product at the front desk for staff members to deliver. 1. Are you looking for Pecans s for your holiday baking? I know my Thanksgiving needs a pecan pie. We have 1lb. bags of beautiful pecans from the Hastings Women's Club for $10. It's a great way to get something you need and help out a local organization. 2. While you are in picking up pecans, you might as well look around at the fall display in The General Store Kitchen. We have a turkey for your centerpiece, activity placemats for the little ones to keep them occupied, kitchen towels and cloths, Woodwick candles with fall leaves, and a pumpkin casserole dish. All of these would be great for your Thanksgiving Day, or make a great “thank you” gift if you are going away for the Thanksgiving feast. 3. It's time to prepare for the Christmas Silent Auction at the Commission on Aging. Participants pick up a stocking, tree or wreath to decorate or fill and return by November 24th. Pick a theme and start creating, but please, no alcohol. Fundraisers like this allow the COA to provide more service for their most important programs so each donation matters. The auction begins on November 30th & ends at the Christmas party on December 17. Call 948-3856 for details. 4. LEGO Club is Monday 4-5pm at the Hastings Public Library. LEGO loving adults can bring a child and play together. Story Time is about Thanksgiving with Toddlers meeting Tuesday at 10:30am & Pre-School Friday at 10:30am. Tuesday at 4pm is Young Chess Tutoring & Chess/Checkers Club at 6pm. Also on Tuesday, is the Frugal Living Exchange: Fiber Arts with Quilting Passions and Barb Wright. Thursday at 4:30pm Movie Memories & Milestones will watch “Ma and Pa Kettle” with Marjorie Main. 5. If you happen to be looking for a deer hunter, they are probably getting their gear in order for Deer Season, November 15, or they went to bed so they can get up bright and early. The rest of us need to be on the look out for running deer and stay out of the woods. It really is fall and dangerously close to winter. 6. Watch Hastings Mystery Theater every Thursday and Friday at 7pm on the Hastings public access channel on the WOW cable system. Enjoy these black and white mystery movies from the 1930's and 1940's See Charlie Chan, the Saint, Hildegarde Withers, Mr. Moto, Bulldog Drummond, the Lone Wolf and others bring the bad guys to justice. 7. Have you looked up The General Store Facebook Page? We have a great Facebook page and it will keep you up on new merchandise we get in and and anything new going on at The General Store. We have turned The South Jefferson Street General Store e into Christmas and are getting ready for our Christmas Kick Off Event which starts Thursday and goes through Sunday. American Greetings has the traditional baby and married “first” ornaments and stars, angels, Santa and more. They also have Dora, My Little Pony, the Turtles and Godzilla and more. The Hastings Pewter Company has 55 different ornaments and each one is very detailed and unique. They have a few new ones this year for Christmas and my favorite is a Christmas Tree with the bottom of it being The Mackinac Bridge. It's very different and I will need several of them for gifts.
