t’s never too early to begin thinking about spring and summer home improvement projects. There’s no better time to get out of the house and get motivated for warm-weather work than the 15th-annual Barry County Home Show, taking place Friday and Saturday, Jan. 29 and 30, at the Barry Expo Center. More than 65 vendors will be ready to provide ideas, services and the know-how necessary to get those lingering projects checked off. Vendors such as Mike King (above, left) of King’s Electronics, Appliances and Mattresses of Hastings, are happy to show customers like the Smith family (front, from left) Donny, Abella, (back) Nicole, Don and Cohen what they have to offer. Admission to the home show is $5 for adults. Children 12 and under are free. Admission includes a full barbecue buffet. For more info, see inside.

The United Way y has a Balloon Sale Fundraiser that will be sure to get the attention of someone special. For $5, you will receive a beautiful Valentine's Day balloon weighted with a small bag of freshly baked cookies and amazing coupons from local Barry County businesses (Including The General Store). They will be ready to pick up Friday, February 12 from 7am to 2pm at State Grounds Coffee House. It's the perfect something for family, friends, co-workers, or just to let someone know you appreciate them. All proceeds to benefit the Volunteer Center endowment fund to create a better Barry County for all through volunteerism. Call 945-4010 for information or to place a large order. 6. January is Radon Action Month. There are test kits available for free to residents of Barry or Eaton County at multiple places through January. For information, call 517-543-2430 for Eaton County and 269-945-9516 for Barry County. This is one of those things that can get overlooked, but is quite important, because it can happen to you. 7. The Barry Home Show w is next weekend January 29-30 at the Barry County Expo Center. This is an opportunity to see local businesses and their products and services and see what is available right here in Barry County. This event will help us all see what is around us so we can shop local. The hours Friday are 108pm and Saturday 10-7pm. 8. There are days I would like to go door to door and tell people about The South Jefferson Street General Store. We have a group of ladies shopping right now that haven't been in before and are completely overwhelmed with the variety, quality and locally made merchandise. They think we have a great store and that we must have had fun putting it together. We have had a great time putting it together and continue to enjoy looking for new things to add. If you haven't been in, come on down and look around. If you have been in, spread the word to your friends and neighbors. We have more great sales this week and there is always something new to see, so a weekly visit is always a great idea. We are ready to help you find the perfect gift waiting for you. 9. Recent quotes from our rehab clients: The best thing that you do is make it feel like home, but help me get better at the same time. You asked what I would change – nothing. The staff was fantastic. My family and I were treated like family. I've been here before. When I need physical therapy I know where I will get excellent care. I will only come here for rehab services. The patients are treated like they are special. I was picturing it 30 years ago, was I wrong! Wonderful!!! Aides are sunshine coming in the room.

THE ELDER LAW ATTORNEY
The Devastating Cost of Dementia Being diagnosed with dementia can cost you over $750,000 according to a recent USA Today article. If you were diagnosed with dementia, do you have $750,000 worth of assets ready to pay for long-term care costs? The difficulty with dementia is not just the emotional cost of watching the person you have known all your life become someone different, but also the financial cost. Just because a person’s brain function weakens, doesn’t mean a person’s overall health weakens. There have been plenty of cases where a person will live as many as eight years or more after first being diagnosed with dementia or some related disorder like Alzheimer’s. Why does that matter? As dementia progresses in a person, he or she will require a level of care that only a nursing home can provide. And it could reach a point where that care need is for virtually everything, which Medicare and most long-term care insurance policies can’t cover. When you consider that nursing home care can cost (more commonly) around $90,000 per year, over the course of eight years living with dementia that cost could be $750,000. Can your nest egg handle that? Fortunately, Medicaid can offset much of the cost, but unfortunately, Medicaid rules are different from state to state – so while the goal may be to keep people in their own homes as much as possible, differing rules may force some people to move to www.longstreetelderlaw.com
another state in order to better ensure eligibility for Medicaid long-term care benefits. Whether you are able to get Medicaid to pay for long-term care or not, the costs incurred to keep your loved one cared for and relatively comfortable can be appalling. So whether you are in need of that care in the short-term, or if you are the child who might need to help pay the bill for the care, it is a good idea to set up a consultation with Longstreet Elder Law. We can help you with your estate plan and give you the best options for your situation with the expectation that dementia may hit your family one way or another. A good estate plan will account for various contingencies in these situations, so you can make sure you have some of your nest egg protected while also being able to meet the financial needs of caring for your elderly loved one when he or she needs it.
