aturday, Oct.. 19, and Sunday, Oct. 20, is the third annual Arts and Eats tour featuring 56 studios, restaurants, wineries, farms and other venues featuring local art and locally produced and sourced food and drink. New this year is the “Taste of Arts and Eats Wine and Cheese Bus Tour” presented by the Thornapple Arts Council from noon until 6 p.m. Saturday. Visitors can board the bus and tour select stops along the route while enjoying wine from Glass Creek Winery and cheese from local producers. That evening, from 6 to 8 p.m., Nashville artist Shari Carney, shown giving a sneak preview lesson to Hastings resident Becky Ponsetto, will lead the arts council’s two-hour “Wine and Art” make- and-take painting session at the County Seat Lounge and Restaurant in downtown Hastings. 1. Returning to Hastings, the Black Heart Maidens will play the Marshall Renegade Rolloitia, an equally competitive team of players. You can show your support for Hastings Schools as you raise donations for the schools with tickets sold at the door this Saturday night. Pre-sale prices are $12, tickets at the door $15. Doors open at 5:30 p.m., the bout starts at 6:30 p.m. 2. Partner together with all faiths to help feed the hungry throughout Barry County during the 31st annual Barry County Crop Hunger Walk. Registration and the walk will begin at 1:30. You are invited to be a walker, sponsor, volunteer and/or prayer partner for the walk to be held entirely on sidewalks. Contact 517-852-1821 for more information. 3. The Cinema 4 Theaters in Downtown Hastings will again show Free Fall Movies this Saturday and Sunday at 9 a.m. and 10 a.m. with a 15 minute intermission. This week’s feature is DOG Days and also offers a Classic Combo for $3.50 and a Healthy Kids Combo for $4.50 at the concession stands. 4. The Michigan Fiddler Association returns to the Barry County Commission on Aging this Saturday (October 12) for a day of music, food and dancing. Fiddlers and square dancers will be showing their stuff from 3 to 5 p.m., there will be sign-up sheets for dinner from 5 to 6 p.m. and all proceeds from dinner will be split between the fiddlers and the COA. 5. The local Swiss Steak and Chicken Dinner will be served this Friday, Oct. 18 from 4 to 7 p.m. at the Hastings First Presbyterian Church on M-37, north of Hastings. A free will offering will be collected with proceeds to the Habitat for Humanity of Hastings. 6. The Lakewood Area Choral Society will present a concert of sacred music in celebration of the 150th anniversary of Emmanuel Episcopal Church, Friday, Oct. 18 at 7:30 p.m. at Emmanuel Episcopal Church, 315 W. Center St., Hastings. 7. The Community Music School of Hastings will host its annual fundraising event, “Showcase,” Saturday, Oct. 19, at 7 p.m. at the First Baptist Church. Newspapers are the lifeblood of your community Dear Reminder Readers, Having a good newspaper is an important part of every community. I would say it’s the lifeblood of every community, delivering what’s important to the readers of that community. As the television people have said for years, “If it bleeds, it leads.” . . . Do you get it from the Internet? You have to dig for the news from all these Internet sites and it never has much detail to it. Sadly, many communities are losing their pulse -- like a

patient slipping away as the heartbeat fades. That may be dramatic, but it does strike a chord: Local newspapers do so much for a sense of community. I know I’m seeing that where I live: Advertisers struggling to find a way to reach customers, readers feeling out of touch with the area, and organizers looking to publicize their events. The economy has taken its toll on all of us and the Reminder is no exception. The good news is you can do something about keeping and improving your community by helping the Reminder to stay strong.
