he theme for the 25th annual Meals on Wheels Walkathon Saturday, May 17 is ‘Rock Around the Block.’ Here, Melissa Brill on guitar and Audrey Acker at the drums are tuned up and tempo ready to promote the Barry County Commission on Aging’s largest fundraiser of the year. Walkers are encouraged to dress like rock stars. Or gals can don poodle skirts and bobby socks, while the guys put on the denim jacket, white T-shirt and sunglasses wardrobe and wind their way around Hastings. Area businesses offer prizes along the route, and lunch, games and more activities will follow at the COA. For more information on this event and the Meals on Wheels program, look inside this issue of the Reminder.

Independent & Assisted Living for Seniors
In celebration of Nurses Week, and every week, Carveth Village of Middleville would like to thank their nursing staff for their hard work and dedication to our residents.
Being a nurse isn't about grades, it's about being who we are. No book can teach you how to cry with a patient. No class can teach you how to tell their family that their parents have died or are dying. No professor can teach you how to find dignity in giving someone a bed bath. A nurse is not about the pills or the charting. It's about being able to respect and love when they are at their weakest moments. L to R: Trisha Neal, Cathy Gilbert, Mari Slachter

BARRY COUNTY COMMUNITY MENTAL HEALTH AUTHORITY “Meeting Today’s Needs, Moving Toward Recovery” • ANNUAL REPORT for the period 10/1/2012 — 9/30/2013 • To Our Valued Community: Change seems to be the only constant these days at BCCMHA. As of January 1, 2014, our agency became a member of Southwest Michigan Behavioral Health due to the State of Michigan minimizing the number of Prepaid Inpatient Health Plans operating in the state. This means that BCCMHA is now partnering with Berrien, Branch, Calhoun, Cass, Kalamazoo, St. Joseph, and Van Buren counties in order to provide more services that are cost effective. April 1st saw the introduction of Healthy Michigan, expanding healthcare coverage to many Michiganders without any healthcare coverage. We are dedicated to assisting our clients with this transition, and staff are working hard on all fronts to that end.
BARRY COUNTY COMMUNITY MENTAL HEALTH AUTHORITY FISCAL YEAR 2012-2013 CLIENTS SERVED
We continue to offer Autism services to those that are eligible. Children who are birth to six years old and who meet criteria are eligible for the new program launched by the state in April of 2013.We are fully staffed to offer these needed services. Lastly, we are partnering with Cherry Street Health Clinic by having available one of our mental health clinicians at the Federally Qualified Health Center located within the Barry-Eaton Health Department. This is a major step toward fully integrated healthcare. We appreciate the support of our clients and the community as we continue to navigate these important changes, — Jan M. McLean, Executive Director
The services mentioned below are provided and offered by BCCMHA for qualified individuals. If interested in the intake process, please visit the website at www.barrycountyrecovery.com or contact the main clinic office at 269-948-8041 during normal business hours. These services are a sampling of what BCCMHA offers to Barry County residents. For more information on all services offered by BCCMHA, please contact the main clinic directly.
INFANT MENTAL HEALTH Infant Mental Health Services at BCCMHA provide families with children from birth to 48 months with support to build the relationship between parents/caregivers and their children. The first few years of life are critical to a child’s development and future success in life. BCCMHA has Infant Mental Health Specialists who are endorsed by the State of Michigan and are trained specifically in the needs of young children. Special emphasis is placed on helping families learn to improve emotional, cognitive and social skills that help very young children grow and flourish. The Infant Mental Health Specialists may also be able to assist community providers, such as daycare services, to support and work with families to help the child learn kills that encourage self-initiative and self-control; increase positive attachment and encourage behavioral control. Depending on need, services can be provided in the clinic or in an outreach setting.
AUTISM Autism evaluations and services became reimbursable by both Medicaid and commercial insurance on April 1, 2013 at BCCMHA. Since that time, BCCMHA has expanded the Autism Team. Currently on staff are two credentialed clinicians that provide comprehensive testing and support to children ages 18 months to six years of age. Also on staff is an Applied Behavioral Analysis Aide who works directly with children identified with Autism Spectrum Disorder (ASD). Early intervention is the key to helping those diagnosed with Autism in order for them to lead productive and healthy lives. One of the future goals at BCCMHA is to increase community awareness and referrals to the Autism program.

Robert Nelson, Vice Chair Pam Jarvis, Treasurer W. Steve Storey, Norman Francis, Gerald Pattok, Howard Gibson, Don Bowers, Deborah Hyatt, Nora Hurst Two open seats Board of Directors meetings for BCCMHA take place on the second Wednesday of each month beginning at 8:00 a.m. MISSION STATEMENT: Barry County Community Mental Health Authority will provide accessible and affordable mental health and substance abuse services focused on prevention, treatment and rehabilitation to county residents who can benefit from our endeavors and assistance. Our mission will be supported by efficient and prudent use of our finances and appropriate diversification.
The school based clinical program at BCCMHA continues in partnership with the Delton Kellogg High School in identifying and supporting “at risk” students. The partnership has allowed BCCMHA to provide a therapist at Delton Kellogg High School one day per week. The therapist has been working in conjunction with the Delton Kellogg High School Counselors in identifying students who would benefit from various forms of therapy. Identified students have been open and willing to receive this service. The School Based Program is in the early stages of development as discussions continue to look at how to best identify and meet the needs of the students and ways for expansion to occur in the future throughout the Barry County community.
SCHOOL BASED PREVENTION Evidence-based programs, such as Life Skills and Project Alert, allow information to be brought into the classroom that may otherwise be overlooked. Meaningful discussions concerning important topics, such as selfesteem, decision making, communication and resistance skills allow students to stand up for themselves and what they believe in. Science-based information is presented concerning substance abuse issues related to tobacco, marijuana, alcohol, prescription medications and inhalants. By staying abreast of the latest trends, this information is presented in a thought-provoking manner that will ideally get students thinking more critically about some of the potentially life changing decisions in their lives and how these decisions will not only affect their health but also their futures.
FAMILY AND CHILDREN BCCMHA strives to provide person-centered, strength-based and medically appropriate treatment for families and children to create lasting change and improve overall quality of life. BCCMHA provides services for children in Barry County less than 18 years of age. Services provided include: family therapy, individual therapy, group therapy, infant mental health, case management, home based services, crisis management, crisis intervention and stabilization. BCCMHA also contracts with other community service providers for residential services, psychiatric services, community wraparound services, respite care and psychological testing. BCCMHA works diligently to create and maintain community partnerships and believes strongly in utilizing a team approach to treatment.
therapeutic methods that allows families to have a foundation for lasting change. The program continues to adapt and make changes to ensure the future success of program participants.
DEVELOPMENTALLY DISABLED (DD) AND MENTALLY IMPAIRED (MI) ADULTS Given today’s fast paced and busy environment, it is not uncommon for people to struggle with stress. Many adults experience feelings of being overwhelmed and having difficulty coping with day-to-day anxiety and depression. Many times people may question where they can turn to in order to manage their emotional distress. BCCMHA has been a community agency since 1974 and has been helping adults who struggle with concerns such as depression, anxiety and other mental health disorders. In fact, the majority of the agency’s budget is dedicated to treating adults who have a significant mental health concern and/or a developmental disability. Issues that people experience have unique characteristics and BCCMHA has qualified, professional staff to help with most situations. Treatment is specialized to each person and may include a number of interventions based on the need and desire of the individual. Services that may be provided to adults include individual therapy, group therapy, psychiatric care, crisis intervention, case management, community living supports, peer supports and specialized residential placement. Perhaps the fastest growing services for adults have been group therapies. Research has shown that group therapy can be just as effective as individual therapy. Many people are initially resistant to group therapy as there are fears and insecurities about having to share concerns with others in a group setting. However, groups at BCCMHA are typically psychoeducational in nature and focus on skill development. People are only asked to share if they are willing to do so and most often people reach a comfortable level in which they do want to share their experiences. Group therapy is successful as people are able to relate to each other in a more meaningful way and often feel more understood as they have the realization that several people have the same issues and concerns as them. BCCMHA has several credentialed staff that are able to lead group therapy sessions in a sensitive, efficient and safe manner. There has been a 68% increase in group services at BCCMHA over the past three years due to the success of such therapy.
SENIOR SERVICES BCCMHA recognizes that there are a wide range of seniors in the community who are unaware of and/or unable to access mental health services. A licensed masters level social worker provides in-home and officebased mental health care centered around the senior’s personal needs. Staff work with individuals and members of their support system to develop a strength-based treatment plan and to work at achieving the individual’s goals in an effective and efficient manner. Senior services are available to Barry County residents who are at least 55 years of age and who have a demonstrated need for counseling services. Individuals may be experiencing feelings of depression or anxiety; feeling overwhelmed with life, struggling with coping or having a need to talk with someone about losses, physical health problems, or emotional, social or interpersonal relationship difficulties. Staff works to coordinate care with community agencies, medical staff and care givers.
HOME-BASED FAMILY TOGETHERNESS PROGRAM
Above is the Sunshine Club enjoying a game of Jeopardy with our very own host Alex Trebek.
The Home-Based Family Togetherness Program at BCCMHA provides intensive community-based treatment allowing children and their families to receive mental health treatment/intervention in a family context. The program provides services to families with children 0-18 as a team approach. The success of the program is heavily reliant on not only the family and the BCCMHA Team but also on local schools, contracted psychiatric services, Barry County Wraparound, Family Support Center of Barry County, Family Court, Juvenile Drug Court, Safe Harbor, Department of Human Services, Great Start, Family and Children Services, Kinship Care, etc. Working together as a team to provide supports to the families improves the chances for success in the future after the completion of the program. Year after year this team approach has proven to be a success for children and families alike. Through the support of the Home-Based Family Togetherness Program, these families have found strength and worked through crisis situations using therapeutic components like PMTO (Parent Management Training Oregon Model) and BSFT (Brief Strategic Family Therapy). These therapeutic components allow for parents to look at their parenting in a different framework and challenge families to change their communication with their family system. It is the use of these types of
The Sunshine Club is a peer-run club designed for more independent clients with developmental disabilities. The Sunshine Club provides a safe place for clients to come socialize with their peers that they may not otherwise have an opportunity to see. The Club provides clients with the opportunity to be independent in their time management. Members need to be independent in their personal hygiene needs, meal preparation, medication and time management. The members have developed a set of rules of conduct/expectations to ensure that everyone is treated with dignity and respect and to provide safety for all members. Rules are reviewed on a regular basis with all members. Follow-through by the members is ensured with the assistance of Positive Directions Managers. Sunshine Club members have many activities to choose from to fill their day such as puzzles, games, ping pong, exercise equipment, books, arts and crafts, gardening and movies. Many of the Club members enjoy participating in the choir and health group or spend a portion of their day in the community volunteering with the assistance of Community Living Support Staff (CLSS). The Sunshine Club members also have an opportunity to participate in making and entering projects at the Barry County Fair as well as the Allegan County Fair in the adult division.
