1. The Hastings Summerfest Celebration, the 37th annual, is next weekend and all are invited to come to town and enjoy the festivities. The Summerfest Committee, a dedicated team of volunteers led by Mike Hallifax has planned a program of activities that includes events for all ages to enjoy. The dozens of activities include sporting events at Tyden Park, Fish Hatchery Park, First Ward Park and Downtown Hastings. Arts and Crafts tents will fill the Courthouse Square and the Entertainment Stage is booked solid Friday and Saturday with acts to entertain you. The Elks Entertainment tent returns and a bunch of concessions are available to feed the family. You can pick up a Summerfest Schedule almost any place around town (Bosley Pharmacy for sure) and use it to plan for a fun filled weekend the whole family will enjoy. Call the Summerfest Hotline (269-945-2454) for more information or to sign up for a sporting event or the Big Parade. While all Summerfest events are free, it does cost some bucks to put on the show, so, if you have any to spare, make a donation at the Summerfest Booth. 2. Two parades will again be featured at Summerfest, the Grand Parade (“Super Heroes”) will be at 12:30 p.m. on Saturday and the Children’s Parade will march down the street beginning at 12:30 p.m. on Sunday during the Car Show. Both parades start at Boltwood and State and travel through Downtown. You must pre-register for the Grand Parade on the Summerfest Hotline. To march or ride in the Kid’s Parade you must be a kid, show up and your hosts (the Hastings Car Club) will find you a spot in the lineup. 3. The 4th annual Dewey’s Auto Body Great Gravity Grand Prix Soap Box Derby will take place at 2 p.m. next Saturday on North Hanover Street ending at the First Ward (Skate) Park. The five event categories include three age groups, an artistic group and the corporate group. As in years past, the Summerfest Entertainment Stage will be on the corner of Court and Church Streets in Downtown Hastings. Featured acts this year include the North Country Flyers (Country), Midlife Crisis (Rock), Barry McGuire (60’s), The Trace (Acoustic Rock), Shout (Beatles Tribute Band), Jr. Walkers All Star Band (Motown) and many others. Almost non-stop music throughout Summerfest. Enjoy! 5. Meet “Paws”, the Detroit Tigers Good Luck Charm and Mascot at the Elks Refreshment Tent from 11 a.m. until 1 p.m., before the Grand Parade in Downtown Hastings. The line-up of Sporting Events during Summerfest includes the annual Jim Jensen Memorial 3 on 3 basketball tournament, softball, 10K-5K Run, fun run, tennis tournament, 3 on 3 soccer classic, beach volleyball tournament, Pinewood Derby and weight lifting. The Hastings Rotary Club helps fund hundreds of Rotary Projects around the world (Rotary International) and especially in our community, including the distribution of Bio-Sand Water Filters, Hastings Rotary Club Scholarship, a drinking fountain on Courthouse Square and a substantial contribution (along with others) to build the new and very successful spray water park in Downtown Hastings. The club will sell Rotary Raffle Tickets at their Summerfest Tent to help raise money for its projects. Tickets are $5 each and the winner can pick from a number of prizes. Details are on the ticket. 8. The all new annual Summerfest Lucky Duck Race moves from the Thornapple River to Church Street next to the new Splash Park in Downtown Hastings next Saturday (new day) afternoon at 4 p.m. The Hastings Fire Department will float the ducks down the street from State to Apple. Tickets are $5 each or 3 for $10, prizes are $200, $100, or $50. Details are on the tickets that can be purchased at the Barry County Chamber of Commerce office in Downtown Hastings. 9. The annual Hastings Summerfest 2014 Car Show will fill the streets of Downtown Hastings next Sunday from 10 a.m. until 5p.m. featuring over 300 entries, a live DJ and more including Arts and Crafts, food vendors, trophies, dash plaques, and Best of Show awards to be awarded at 3 p.m. The Hastings Car Club also sponsors a Kids Parade down the center of the show at 12:30 p.m. The entry fee is $10 for all cars and the proceeds help support kid’s programs in Barry County. 10. Kick off Summerfest Weekend with Playing at the Plaza this Thursday. The kid’s concert will be at noon featuring Benjammin & Analisa Gauthier, the owners and performers of BenJammin Educational Music. They use hand drums, guitars, ukuleles, drum sticks, puppets and stories to teach children life skills through audience participation and song. The evening Playing at the Plaza concert next Thursday at 6:30 p.m. will feature the new Ed Englerth Band with Randy Carlson on bass and Matt Larghi on percussion. The band plays from three generations of musical influences presenting something refreshing and unique in the form of “Moody Intelligent Folk Jazz Blues.” 11.
