here may be no better event to carry the theme, “There’s country in the air,” than the 161st annual Barry County Fair that gets underway today. Judging and mule pulls highlight today’s opening schedule with harness racing, more judging and the state heavyweight draft horse pull tomorrow. And that’s all before the fair officially begins Monday. The week will bring a variety of activities for people of all ages, including livestock shows, singing competitions, tractor parades, a rodeo, horse-drawn wagon rides, baby animals, antique farm machinery demonstrations, a demolition derby and motocross. Special kids day events, presentations for seniors and ladies, educational displays and demonstration gardens will be available. For more about this year’s fair, see stories inside.

1. The 161st edition of the Barry County Fair starts today and continues through next Saturday at the Barry Expo Center on M-37, north of Hastings. The mission of our fair, as it has been for these many years. is to entertain us, to teach us and to serve the youth of our community with the hundreds of activities that make up fair week. Check the schedule in this week’s Reminder or pick up a copy at Bosley Pharmacy on South Jefferson Street. The fair has scheduled action events each day including Autocross, Motocross, a Mud-Run, Harness Racing, the Broken Horn Professional Rodeo, Skydive Wayland, a hot air balloon ascent and ending with the spectacular Demolition Derby on Saturday evening, co-sponsored by “The Medbug,” invited to be the “pace car” but those plans were cancelled due to a lack of faith in the derby drivers. The community tent will feature Justin Straube from the Seasonal Grille on Thursday, Ladies Day, along with a free lunch. Other events include the WBCH Country Showdown, a Country Music Jamboree and more including bingo, horse drawn rides, a farm animal birthing tent and a children’s tent. The heart of the fair, the Giant Midway from Gold Medal Shows starts at 6pm on Monday and continues daily. For more fair information call 269-945-2224 or log on to www.barryexpocenter.com. Daily Fair passes are $5, season passes are $15. Grand stand shows are extra, parking is free, all in all, the biggest entertainment bargain of the year. Or, sing “Scarborough Fair” from the South Jefferson Street Fair Stage (the soapbox) this week, loudly, proudly for all to hear and we will buy you a season pass to this year’s fair. (Limit 3) 2. While the many fair events are great entertainment, don’t forget that the main reason for the celebration is to recognize & support the hundreds of kids from 4-H & FFA who spend hours preparing the numerous exhibits and animals to be judged at the fair. It is a learning experience for all of them. Your attendance at the presentations and your support in bidding for the animals is a major part of the experience and is much appreciated by the kids and their families. The Small Animal Auction (rabbits, turkeys, chickens, goats, etc.) is on Thursday evening beginning at 5:30pm and the Large Animal Auction is at 9 am on Friday. All bidders get in free and are invited to enjoy the lunch served during the auction. Attend, bid and enjoy. 3. One of the important parts of Fair Week is the annual Barry County Steam, Gas & Antique Machinery Association Show that runs all week at the fair grounds in conjunction with the fair. Activities include tractor, steam & gas engine events daily, the Tractor Parade each evening, tractor pulls, tractor displays, tractor games, corn grinding, threshing and more. Pick up a show book and enjoy the many activities during fair week. 4. The annual Civil War Muster at Charlton Park is next weekend, July 20-21. History comes alive with hundreds of re-enactors depicting Confederate and Union Infantry, Cavalry & Artillery units. Shop Sutler Row, play games, see military demonstrations and attend the daily battle activities. Tickets are $5 for adults, $3 for kids (5-12), 4 & under get in free. Or, you can recite the Gettysburg Address, from memory, from high atop the Free Podium (the soapbox) this week in a grand, glorious and inspiring tone for all to hear and we will buy you two tickets to the Civil War Muster. (Limit 5) 5. The Thornapple Arts Council will sponsor a “Dance for the Arts” next Friday evening from 6:30-9:30pm at Bob King Park in Hastings, a casual family friendly event with music from DJ Jon Anderson. Cost is $5 a person, $3 kids 12 & under or $15 per family. This event is an endowment fundraiser for the TAC. The rain location is in the Barry Community Enrichment Center. 6. The No Family Left Indoors program this week, Tuesday, July 6, features “Plantastic!” a program that shows you what plants do to survive through the seasons by participating in a variety of outdoor activities and exploring Pierce Cedar Creek Institute prairies & ponds. The program goes on from 6:30 until 8pm at the institute and is free to all. Find out more at 269-721-4190 or log on to www.barryoutdoorfun.com. 7. The Hastings Public Library Summer Reading Program, “Big Into Reading,”will present a “Dig into Reading Rock & Roll Show” featuring music, history, comedy and more this Wednesday afternoon at 2pm. The program is free to all. 8. The Fridays at the Fountain concert this Friday noon-1:30pm by the fountain in Courthouse Square features Chuck Whiting & his Rowdy Friends.
