ifelong dreams guide avid bicyclist Rick Moore in his quest to partner citizens with healthy lifestyles promoted by area trails. As a child, Moore was fascinated by old abandoned railbeds, daydreaming and imagining them connecting once again to form a long trail replete with old forest, bubbling rivers and some truly amazing views. “Trails connect people” is Moore’s personal belief and he never lets pass by the opportunity to thank each person he meets while maintaining trails throughout the county. “Thanks for using the trails,” holds special meaning for Moore, offering affirmation to him that his dream may soon come true. For more on Moore and his trail dreams, look inside.

NEGLECT AND SELF NEGLECT What is Elder Neglect or Self Neglect?

Signs of Self-Neglect can include:

Neglect is the failure of a caregiver or facility to provide the care a vulnerable adult needs. A vulnerable adult includes anyone over age 18 who is unable to protect him/herself from abuse, neglect or exploitation because of a mental or physical impairment or because of advanced age. Neglect can be passive neglect, where the caregiver is unable to fulfill their role or providing for the needs of the vulnerable adult because of not being properly trained, being fatigued and/or overworked, ignorance, stress, lack of maturity, illness, their own disability, or lack of resources.

• Hoarding • Failure to take essential medications or refusal to seek medical treatment • Unsafe living conditions • Poor hygiene • Not wearing suitable clothing for the weather • Confusion • Inability to attend to housekeeping • Dehydration and Malnutrition

Active neglect refers to behavior that is willful, which occurs when a caregiver intentionally withholds care or necessities. Self-neglect refers to circumstances in which there is no perpetrator and neglect is the result of the vulnerable adult refusing care; not aware that a higher level of care is necessary; or is without the resources, energy, or assistance to obtain a higher level of care.

What do I do if I suspect someone I know is a victim of Neglect or Self Neglect?

Signs of Neglect can include:

Speak up! Ask the older adult and listen closely to their response. If you believe they are a victim of abuse, report it to Michigan’s Elder Abuse Hotline, 1-855-444-3911. Be specific and give as much detailed information as you can. Your report will be held in confidence, with neither the victim nor the perpetrator knowing that you called.

• Poor personal hygiene including soiled clothing, dirty nails and skin, matted or lice infested hair, odors, and the presence of feces or urine

If you have observed criminal behavior, contact local law enforcement by dialing 9-1-1

• Unclothed, or improperly clothed for weather

Seek out resources available in the community, such as:

What are some of the signs of Neglect and Self Neglect?

• Mental Health counseling services available through the Barry County Mental Health Authority, 269-948-8041

• Unusual weight loss or malnutrition

• Long-term care and supports available through the Region 3B Area Agency on Aging, 1-800-626-6719

• Untreated medical or mental conditions, including infections, soiled bandages, and unattended fractures

• Caregiver Support available through the Barry County Commission on Aging, 269-948-4856

• Missing dentures, eyeglasses, hearing aids, walkers, wheelchairs or commodes

• Housing matters and Veterans assistance available through Barry County United Way, 269-945-4010

• Deteriorating health, despite a care plan

• Quality of care concerns for nursing home and adult foster care residents, reportable through Long-Term Care Ombudsman, 1-866-485-9393

• Worsening dementia • Left alone or locked up for extended periods of time • Presence of pressure ulcers or bed sores • Exhibits withdrawn, fearful or regressive behavior

“THE REMINDER SETS THE STANDARD IN THE INDUSTRY

Dear Reminder Readers,

As you read this week’s edition, I encourage you to take part in the voluntary subscription program to ensure you continue to receive this publication each and every week for years to come. I began my career in the community paper industry in 1980 as an advertising sales rep., and have worked in many capacities since that time, including publisher of a group of weekly newspapers and a weekly shopping guide. It was with great honor that I accepted the position of Executive Director for this association in 2008, representing over 100 newspapers and shopping guides throughout the state of Michigan. I believe in the power of local print and have experienced countless examples of the positive influence community newspapers make in the lives of residents, businesses and local governments they serve.

Jack Guza is a longtime reader — and admirer — of the Reminder and its related community newspapers. That’s in large part because he’s the executive director of Community Papers of Michigan, the largest professional organization dedicated to the excellence of community journalism in our state. But he’s also an advocate who understands the importance of a newspaper to its community. When Jack learned of the Reminder’s appeal to readers that they consider being voluntary subscribers to help us address the threats to our industry, he wanted to offer his thoughts on how fortunate our community is to have an industry-leading paper like the Reminder come to you each week.

I have known and worked with Fred Jacobs for many years through this association and we have become great friends over the years. I have always been impressed by Fred’s ever-present energy and passion for the print industry and especially his commitment to the community that he so loves. Fred is an inspiration to those that serve with him on our Board of Directors and all who are fortunate enough to count him as a friend.

The Jacobs family is a rare breed in today’s publishing industry as they continue to place emphasis on publishing articles and photos of interest that matter most to you, and they go the extra mile to publish a lot of them each week. While many publications cut news coverage to decrease their page count and print fewer copies to save money, J-Ad Graphics refuses to compromise their local news coverage and delivery areas. The Jacobs family is well known and respected in the industry for their “community first business model. The Reminder continued offering you the absolute best local news and information throughout the great recession which has proved to be the largest economic downturn since the great depression. The Reminder has announced the birth of your children and grandchildren, their accomplishments in school and beyond, helped you celebrate engagements and mourn the loss of your loved ones. The Reminder keeps you abreast of challenges facing local schools, government and businesses and always features the many civic and church groups that make Barry County a very special place to live and work. By providing such a quality publication to residents throughout the county, The Reminder offers local businesses the absolute best return on their advertising investment. The Reminder is

not just a newspaper it is an integral part of your community as are the people who produce each and every edition. You may not be aware that The Reminder has been and remains one of the single largest weekly community newspapers in the state with an average of 48 pages per week and many weeks they are even larger! The Reminder has received Circulation Verification Council’s Gold Standard Award several times. This prestigious award is earned by the top 2% of community publications in the nation for readership, receivership and purchase scores. The cost to run a newspaper, employ your friends, relatives and neighbors, compose each page, then print and deliver each copy has increased exponentially over the years. A voluntary subscription is a way to say thank you and give your nod of approval for all that a publication provides within your community each and every week. The amount you pay is up to you, however, by paying something you help to ensure that The Reminder will be there for you and your community, as you have come to expect for many years to come.

Sincerely, Jack Guza Executive Director
