reparing for the Iron Rails Model Train Show at the Barry County Expo Center on Saturday, Sept. 20, Gus Swenson has been busy testing the operation and performance of his own world of trains. Swenson and six men who comprise the Iron Rails Railroad Club meet once a week to talk all things model trains. They’ll all -- along with model railroaders from all over Michigan -- be bringing their model train layouts to the Expo Center beginning at 10 a.m. to share the world of miniature trains with the community. Hand built from everyday items and materials, these model train layouts are forays into the past for those who remember the days of trains being the most prevalent method of hauling cargo, animals, people and more. Kids of all ages will enjoy the time and focus today’s model railroaders invest in what they call the ‘Greatest Hobby On Earth’.

1. The semi-annual Barry County Hazardous Waste, Tire, Electronics and Medication Collection will be next Saturday (September 20) from 9 a.m. until 1 p.m. at the Barry County Fairgrounds. They will take almost any hazardous waste but there is a list of items they will not accept (check out today’s Reminder). There is a charge for tires based on size and how dirty they are, otherwise disposal is free. At this event the Medicine Take Back Project will accept your prescription and other medications for disposal. Please keep medications in original containers with the name of the drug on the label, destroying any personal information. Help keep our community and your home safe by using the hazardous waste program. For list of acceptable waste or a price list for junk tires check out the ad in this Reminder or call 269-945-9516. 2. Rachel Joy Scott was the first victim of the Columbine High School shooting and her mother, Beth Nimmo, shares the inspiring lessons and writings of her daughter in “The Poet of Columbine,” a story of faith, during a Youth Rally at Noon next Saturday at the First Presbyterian Church on M-37 north of Hastings and at a Community Event the same day, 7 p.m. in the at Central Auditorium. Admission is free and you can get more information at FirstChurchHastings.org. 3. The Barry Expo Center will host the first annual Model Train Show sponsored by the Iron Rails Model Railroad Club next Saturday (September 20) from 10 a.m. until 3:30 p.m. Admission is $4, 12 and under get in free. There will be door prizes, food and unlimited free parking. The operating layouts will include a Lego Layout with a play area and a hands-on Thomas Layout in addition to a number of regular model train layouts and vendors. Hastings City Bank, the official bank of South Jefferson Street, will host an Electronic Banking Fair this Wednesday (September 17) at 3 p.m., starting with an overview of their electronic banking services followed by breakout sessions on each topic at 4 p.m. Refreshments will be served.
