ierce Cedar Creek Institute south of Hastings began as a dream of Bill and Jessie Pierce. The couple loved the land, the people and the community of southwest Michigan and wanted to give back. Sitting on a friend’s porch, Bill thought up the idea of a place devoted to conservation and environmental education. That idea eventually led to the founding of Pierce Cedar Creek Institute. While the institute has grown over the years and expanded its offerings and reputation as a place of learning, conservation and research, officials haven’t forgotten how to have fun. Sunday, they will host its third-annual winter festival and brunch, with fresh-air opportunities outdoors, creative activities indoors and more chances to learn. Read more inside.

1. The quietness of January has arrived in Hastings. The hustle and bustle of the holidays is behind us and the cold and snow has finally shown up, so it feels good to stay inside and do home projects. It doesn't take long though, as you look around to see things that need to be done and things that look interesting and call you outside. We have some sales and new products at The South Jefferson Street General Store e we hope will call you into our store. I know it's a month away, but we are also starting to put up Valentine's Day y so if you would like to choose from the best selection, now is the time. Sanders chocolate covered cherries are back in stock in both milk and dark chocolate. New for us is Sanders s Gourmet Popcorn Motor City Mix caramel, cheddar and chocolate popcorn, Peanut Butter Block, Chocolate Peanuts, Taste of Michigan chocolate bar which has the state, Mackinac Bridge, a windmill and other Michigan related things on it and we have Gretzels. You will need to come in and read about those and I would appreciate you doing it soon before I decide to eat them all. 2. January is Radon Action Month. There are test kits available for free to residents of Barry or Eaton County during January. In Hastings, they are available at the Health Department at 330 W. Woodlawn Ave. For information, call 517-543-2430 for Eaton County and 269-945-9516 for Barry County. This is one of those things that can get overlooked, but is quite important, because it can happen to you. 3. Looking for a new book to read? Hastings Public Library y has an event in which you might be interested. Monday at 6:30pm is Alice Kinney Book Signing and Reading, so you can come out and meet the author and start one of her books. This week, Story Time is about snails with Toddlers meeting Tuesday at 10:30am and Pre-School Friday at 10:30am. Also on Tuesday, is Chess/Checkers Club at 6pm. The January Series continues at 12pm each week day through January 26. In its 29th year, this award winning lecture series is streamed live from Calvin College. The topics are available at www. hastingspubliclibrary.org. Thursday at 4:40pm Movie Memories and Milestones will be watching “Lilies of the Field” with Sidney Poitier. The Adult Winter Reading Club is also going strong. Stop in and get your punch card and find out the different activities that merit a punch. Each filled card enters the prize drawing so you will want to fill as many as you can by April 1. 4. Two downtown churches in Hastings share their bounty with the community every week. The First United Methodist Church has Share the Light Soup Kitchen every Tuesday from 5-6p.m. at the church on the corner of Green and Church streets. The Emmanuel Episcopal Church at the corner of Center and Broadway in Downtown Hastings serves a hot Community Breakfastt every Saturday morning 8-9:30am. Both meals are open to all. Donations are accepted but not necessary. 5. The Hastings Adventist Community Centerr serves over 1000 people each year by providing needed clothing, bedding, towels, small furniture and more to those in need. Everything is given without charge or obligation of any kind. Those in need should visit the center on the corner of Green and East Streets from 8:30 until noon on Mondays and Wednesdays. Donations are also gratefully accepted during those hours. 6. We are doing a lot of restocking at The South Jefferson Street General Store. Many things sold out over the Christmas season so we are bringing your favorites back in and continuing to look for new. Made in Michigan is on the top of the list. Have you seen our Beard Oil and Combs? They are from Heritage Beard Company y located right here in Hastings, Michigan. More and more men are growing and keeping a beard all year around and this oil will help keep it healthy and looking good.
