PENNFIELD SCHOOLS Schools of choice notice 2012-2013 School year

Website: www.battlecreekpublicschools.org

April 2012

College Going Culture at Battle Creek Public Schools Battle Creek Public Schools students are embracing a "College Going Culture." The week of April 16 - 20 kicked off “College-Going Culture Spirit Week.” Students in each building celebrated the 10th Anniversary of the Carson Scholarship with different themes each day. College t-shirts and sweatshirts were sported by both staff and students at all the schools in the district, students dressed up with what they would wear in their future careers and high school students read excerpts to elementary students from Dr. Ben Carson's book, "Gifted Hands". Colorful banners adorned the front of the high school proclaiming both the Carson Scholarship and the Legacy Scholarship. This year an unprecedented 36 Carson scholarships were granted to students in grades 412. World famous Pediatric Neurosurgeon, Dr. Ben Carson will be the guest speaker at the Carson Scholars Reception on Friday, April 20 in the high school gymnasium. Many former Carson Scholars winners from the past ten years will also return for the celebration. 2012 marks the graduation of the first class of Legacy Scholars. Students who attend Battle Creek Public Schools beginning in 6th grade through graduation have the opportunity to attend Kellogg Community College for two years with their Legacy Scholarship. The Legacy Scholarship includes tuition, books and even tutoring if needed. The Carson and the Legacy Scholarships are not the only opportunities for assistance in post-secondary education. There are many other scholarship opportunities at Battle Creek Public Schools. To assist students in planning their next steps after high school the new "Futures" office was opened in February.

From left to right. Dr. Ben Carson and Brian Jones. Dr. Carson and his wife Candy founded the Carsons Scholars Fund. Brian Jones is a 2003 graduate of Battle Creek Central and one of the first Battle Creek recipients of a Carson Scholarship. Brian is a 3rd year medical student.

Central High School students sport their college colors as they prepare for their college careers. Front (left to right): Danielle Bevel, Enna Friedenstad, Kevin Portillo, Vania Word, Jordann Jackson, Gabriel Fitzpatrick. Middle row: Mark Thu, Christina Thluai, Nyssa Richardson, Chelsea Phillips, Ian Harryman, Stacey Bradley Back row: Julian Makawi, Dion Starling, DaLaun Dillard Fremont Kindergarten students anticipating their Bearcat high school graduation.

With all the buzz about scholarships and post-secondary education Battle Creek Central experienced a 58% increase in the number of applicants to college and trade schools in 2012.
