Battle Creek SHOPPER NEWS, Delivered Free to Nearly 50,000 Area Homes – October 22, 2015 – Page 3

Newspapers build and maintain a community Recently as I was sorting through boxes of lifelong keepsakes for repacking and storage, I came across a scrapbook of clippings along with a number of old newspapers from my Indiana childhood, 1977-1979: Shelly Sulser “Blizzard continues to slam the Midwest;” “Solar eclipse darkens portions of the globe; won’t occur again until 2017;” and, the published image that sparked excitement and a lifelong passion for photojournalism and journalism, a picture of me in the Marion Chronicle-Tribune getting ready to show my horse at the Grant County Fair: “To no one’s surprise, Western garb was the most popular dress,” was the caption beneath the picture. From then on, I understood the thrill instilled in children to see themselves in the paper, being recognized by their classmates, families and neighbors and acknowledged for doing something cool. Shortly after moving to Michigan in the middle of my senior year, Elaine Gilbert came to our home to interview my mom about her oil painting talents because she was among those preparing to show at the Lake Odessa Arts Council’s annual Art in the Park. I was captivated – and envious – of a job that would take you out of the office to take pictures, interview interesting people and give them that community recognition in their free, hometown weekly, The Reminder. My dream came true shortly thereafter when, on Elaine’s advice, I submitted my application and resume to J-Ad Graphics, at just 19 years old and was hired to work part time covering Nashville and Vermontville for the Maple Valley News. I wrote stories about a community playground build, a local chili cookoff winner, I covered the school board, the village councils and Vermontville Maple Syrup Festival and related events. I even covered fires, accidents and court cases. I did it all. And I loved it. J-Ad Graphics has allowed me to take a budding interest and bring it to full bloom on the scrapbook pages of new generations of impressionable children. I’ve taken great pride and joy in helping to chronicle the local news that otherwise would not have been told, to provide the acknowledgment to deserving citizens who

would have gone unsung and to arm people with information they can use to protect themselves, their families and their properties. Today, after 17 years in Barry County, nearly six years in Marshall and seven years in Battle Creek so far, all for J-Ad Graphics, I still get a thrill out of shining a spotlight on people like the McGlynn family who lovingly staged a play starring Noah, who has cerebral palsy; on community heroes like Nathan Stencel and Lt. Clifford Hill who were hailed by the Battle Creek Exchange Club as Firefighters of the Year and on Lakeview High School senior Kanta Yoshino who organized “Cultural Day” so his classmates could get to know one another better. I love going into the schools and seeing our stories tapes to the walls, windows and pinned to the bulletin boards. That’s why we do what we do. We help you showcase your pride. I hate to think where we would all be without it. Shelly Sulser, Executive Editor Battle Creek Shopper News

I grew up with the Detroit Free Press on the kitchen table every morning. Joe Falls was my favorite columnist, until he jumped ship and started writing for the Detroit News. The feature that caught my eye the Doug Allen most was a picture page on the back page of the paper every day. One of the staff photographers would explore something that interested them and a whole new world opened up for me. David Turnley got inside the world of the Amish in Pennsylvania and moon shiners in Kentucky. Manny Crisostomo spent a year documenting the lives of students at Detroit’s Southwestern High School. Both men have won Pulitzer Prizes for their photography. It was the subtle emotion captured in their images (any many others, including Mary Schroeder, who shot the iconic 1984 image of Detroit Tiger Kirk Gibson roaring at the plate after a home run) that drew me to photojournalism. From race car drivers to movie stars and high school athletes, hearing and telling their stories

has brought me a lifetime of wonderful memories. I’m hoping that someone has similar moments while looking at our work in the Battle Creek Shopper News. We hear constantly from readers that they “liked that story,” they “loved that photo” and frequently they’re inspired to support a cause that we’ve reported on. It’s very moving to be part of positive journalism that impacts our community. We don’t take the responsibility lightly, and look forward to hearing your story. Doug Allen, Assistant Editor Battle Creek Shopper News

The English language is a powerful tool. It determines how we think, it helps us express creativity, and it is the main purveyor of information. News, whether it’s in the Battle Creek Shopper News or Ann Pulsipher elsewhere, connects us to the community where we live. In a larger sense, the promise of a vibrant democracy depends upon its citizens being informed; the Shopper News has a hand in that promise. When I graduated from college, I didn’t plan to work in the newspaper field, but that’s where I ended up, because I wanted to write. I found I liked editing, as well. Now, I’m still writing – a column called 'Anna-gram' for the Shopper News, poetry, fiction, essays – and editing. The best part of my job is that I get to work with words, even if it’s only to check someone’s grammar. And every day, I learn about Battle Creek and surrounding areas through the emails, press releases and letters of residents who are telling stories of their own. The Shopper News is an important platform for businesses but articles provide it with spark and color. The best part of getting one’s information from a newspaper is that you can hold the news and those stories in your hands. It doesn’t give off a glare or stop working because of low battery life. You can smush it, write on it, cut out a coupon and tear out articles – even a copy of my column! Ann Pulsipher Staff Copy Editor, Battle Creek Shopper News

Together we are STRONG.

2015 Annual Report

The Regional Health Alliance (RHA) is a broad-based collective body of diverse professionals committed to improving the health of our community. RHA is unique, providing an avenue for partnerships to develop, resulting in a united, collaborative group working together to address the significant health issues affecting the community. Mutually determined goals guide this important work and benchmarks hold everyone accountable. Through these partnerships, targeted programs and robust county-wide initiatives have been developed that have made a positive impact. This is not easy work ± addressing health challenges is comple[ and often there is no quick solution. Since its inception in 1999, RHA has stayed the course, maintaining long-running effective initiatives, yet remaining fle[ible enough to shift focus and capitali]e on positive momentum in other areas. Some of the programs that are working include: Pack-1-Play Program ±this effort was formed through the Maternal & Infant Health Commission, providing a safe sleep environment for every infant in need throughout Calhoun County. 2ver 1, Pack-1-Plays have been distributed in the past five years. School 1urse Program ± By the late 199 s, school nurses had virtually been eliminated from most school budgets. Through the School Wellness group and in collaboration with the Calhoun County Public Health 'epartment, 1 school nurses now serve at least of the school districts in the county, with regular visits in buildings. Additional RHA efforts are making a difference toward a healthier community: 2peration Fit ±Through collaboration with Bronson Battle Creek, over , kids in our community are increasing physical activity by participating in the 2peration Fit Mileage Club. 2ver 1, students in schools are learning healthy habits through the 2peration Fit school wellness program, a healthy lifestyle program working towards creating healthy school environments by increasing daily physical activity, improving the nutrition environment and communicating with families. Breastfeeding Coalition of Calhoun County- This group is working to increase both the number of mothers that breastfeed their children and the number of months that they continue. Babies who are breastfed have lower rates of childhood obesity and are more resilient to disease and infection early in life. Food 'irector’s Collaborative ± Food directors from seven area school districts now meet to engage in creative programming to address consumption of healthier nutritious choices in school lunch programs. BCycle Stations ±Three BCycle stations, promoting healthy lifestyles, have been installed throughout the community, allowing for easy and affordable access to bike riding in the beautiful downtown and surrounding area. These stations can be found at the Kool Family Community Center, Kellogg Community College and at the Riverwalk Centre Building. More than 1 5 bicycle trips were initiated from BCycle stations this past season.

Seeking solutions Over 90 partner organizations come together as the Regional Health Alliance (RHA) to address our community’s top health priorities. RHA utilizes neighborhood-level data to make informed decisions in guiding this work.

2besity Access to Care Chronic 'isease (led by Integrated Health Partners) Mental Health (led by Summit Pointe) Teen Pregnancy Maternal and Infant Health Addiction (led by Tobacco Cessation & Substance Abuse Community Work Group) Cancer (led by the Calhoun County Cancer Control Coalition [5C’s]) 2ral Health Se[ually Transmitted Infections School Wellness and School 1urse Programs

CASH (Committee on Adolescent Se[ual Health) ±This dynamic group is addressing, head on, the serious issue of further decreasing teen pregnancy and se[ually transmitted infections in our teen population. This issue requires a community-wide understanding and approach. This year, we’ll work towards further knowledge and understanding of the health needs in the Albion community, as identified through the Albion health needs survey. This will further strengthen programming across the county and is anticipated to create a new inter-connectedness between the Albion Health Care Alliance and the RHA. The Regional Health Alliance grows to be more relevant, valuable and effective every day. We are proud of the partnerships, the initiatives and the successes that have been achieved through the collective accomplishments. There is much more that needs to be done. We invite you to join us in this important work - together, we can make a difference.

Taking Action to Address Health Needs – a few examples of what RHA does: Promoting healthy babies Calhoun County’s infant mortality rate has historically been higher than the state average, however, between 11 and 1 , a significant improvement in the infant mortality rate was made. In 11, there were 9. deaths per 1, live births and in 1 , there were 5.9 deaths per 1, births. The partners of the Maternal and Infant Health Commission meet regularly to identify ways to continue this positive trend and to turn the group’s vision into a reality - that all Calhoun County infants will be born healthy and thrive. A recent initiative focuses on prenatal care and maternal education. 1early 1 Baby Basics books and planners have been distributed to pregnant women across Calhoun County this past year. These books are a month-by-month guide to pregnancy, providing women with easy access to prenatal health information. The planner is utili]ed throughout pregnancy as a place where women keep track of their prenatal visits and their own health.

Improving Access To Oral Health Services The Dentists’ Partnership program was created to provide free dental care to those in need, in exchange for time they are required to provide in community volunteer service. Today more than 30 area dentists volunteer their time for this important effort. More than 7,500 services have been provided to dental patients.

More than one-third of Calhoun County residents don’t have dental insurance and access to dental care, and more than one-third of adults had no dental visit in the past year.

Encouraging healthy lifestyles and access to nutritious foods 6,690 children in Calhoun County are food insecure, meaning their access to adequate food is limited by a lack of money and other resources at times during the year. To increase access to nutritious foods, a farmer’s market has been initiated at Riverside Elementary School, providing a vast array of affordable, nutrient-packed fresh food options right outside the school. 2ver the past year, this program has been accessed by students, parents, staff, and neighborhood residents. The Center for 'isease Control recommends children get minutes or more of physical activity each day. 2peration Fit is a healthy lifestyle program for youth, increasing physical activity and promoting nutrition. “The Operation Fit Program has provided us with the tools to continue to transform our neighborhood school into more of a community. Our students benefit daily from physical fitness and nutritional activities all while creating more of a family atmosphere that promotes student safety and awareness. Staff, students, and parents are joining together to create a true positive learning climate that promotes student fitness and transfers to success in the classroom.” - Don Hoaglin, Principal, Prairieview Elementary /earn more about 2peration Fit by liking their Facebook page

www.facebook.com/operationfitcalhouncounty These collaborative efforts promote the long-term health of our children and the community, helping to combat serious health conditions like heart disease, diabetes, and some forms of cancer.
