Prairieview 'LET ME RUN' Program Takes Off There is an exciting program that is available to Prairieview Elementary 4th grade boys called LET ME RUN. This program centers around helping boys build self-esteem while inspiring them through the power of running to be individuals as well as work as a team. Registration for this amazing program is February 29th. The program will run for seven weeks beginning on March 28th. Participants train twice a week, on Tuesdays and Thursdays, from 4-5:15PM, and finish with the Kalamazoo 5K on May 21st. The cost for this program is $100.00, we do offer scholarships, and they are available through the several sources. We have a fabulous group of coaches this year very enthusiastic to get this season STARTED!!! If you have any questions, please contact Mrs. Bridges at kbridges@lakeviewspartans.org g p g or call 565-4671. You can also find more information regarding this program at letmerun.org.

Riverside Students Extend Learning Beyond the Classroom In January, Riverside third grade teachers organized a trip to Lansing in an effort to bring their social studies units to life. As part of the experience, students toured the Capitol Building and the Michigan Historical Museum. The Capitol Tour included a 60-minute presentation on the history and restoration of the building and an overview of the legislative process. While there students visited with Representative John Bizon. The Michigan Historical Museum begins with a brief orientation before students step back in time in a one room schoolhouse, observe a Flint Touring Car and B-24 Bomber Nose, as well as listening to a 1930s radio broadcast. “Third graders study Michigan History and Michigan's Citizens and Government, and there’s only so much you can do in a traditional classroom to maximize understanding. When we travel to Lansing to visit the Capitol and

museum, the text comes alive and the connections are amazing,” explained Lana Nickert, Riverside teacher.

Splash Program Encourages Good Nutrition & Physical Activity Minges Brook Elementary students are excited when they see “Mrs. Splash”, aka Lisa Middleton, walk into their classrooms. They know they are going to try some tasty fruit and/or vegetable and engage in a fun activity. Mrs. Middleton, a Nutrition and Physical Activity Educator, visits classrooms for 45 min. once a week for 6 weeks. She teaches a lesson on the benefits of healthy eating and physical activity, then encourages students to taste the fruit/vegetable she brought that ties in with the lesson. The day I visited a classroom, Ms. Miller’s second graders were coloring a rainbow while discussing the many colors of fruits and vegetables. They were eager to listen to the clues that ‘Mrs. Splash’ gave to try and guess what they were about to taste.

Congratulations LMS 8th grade National Junior Honor Sociey inductees.

Congratulations LMS 7th grade National Junior Honor Society inductees

Lakeview Middle School NJHS Inducts New Members

By Ryth Seiler (NJHS Recording Secretary) On December 14, 2015, Lakeview Middle School inducted 64 new National Junior Honor Society 7th and 8th grade members. The ceremony was a simple but grand affair with the officers of NJHS running most of the ceremony. The new members are students with grade point averages of 3.5 and above and show great aptitude for the program. The officers began the ceremony with giving their examples of leadership, scholarship, character,

service, and citizenship, the foundational qualities for NJHS. The ceremony concluded with guest speaker, Courtney McCotter Smith, who was a graduate of Lakeview and a former standout athlete who went on to play volleyball at Grand Valley State University. She earned her bachelor’s degree and master’s degree there and has returned to Battle Creek as a Physician’s Assistant. Each new inductee received a purple carnation to signify their new status in the program.

The Lakeview School District Board of Education is now accepting nominations for its Annual Distinguished Alumni Award. Past recipients of the award include TV host Rick Browne ’64, Broadway star Doug LaBrecque ’82, and local community and business leaders Dr. Peter Colquhoun ’74 and Scott Durham ‘89. The Board will consider nominations for graduates of the Class of 1995 and earlier. Nomination forms are available on the district website at www.lakeviewspartans.org. The deadline for submission is March 1. All nominations will be reviewed by the Distinguished Alumni Committee, which will then provide a recommendation to the Board of Education. Final selection of the 2016 Distinguished Alumnus will be made by the end of March with the awardee notified at that time. Nomination forms and information on past award recipients are available at: www.lakeviewspartans. org/distinguishedalumni.

LHS seniors Lila Elliott and Erin Stafford competed against DECA members from across the nation to earn a spot as one of three finalists in the Herff Jones Yearbook Marketing Results Challenge. There could not have been a more enticing award for Elliott and Stafford than an all- expense paid trip to Palm Desert, California, in the middle of January, but the experience of the competition was what drove them to success from the beginning. “It was a great experience to top off our senior year,” Elliott said. “Not only did we accomplish being ICDC finalists, but set up our school for a new, fun tradition.” As members of both DECA and the yearbook staff, Elliott and Stafford had a unique insight into both organizations that aided them in developing the Three Days of Yearbook Festivities marketing campaign. Over three school days in November, they sponsored a Black Friday yearbook sale, a class penny war and a yearbook raffle for those who purchased a yearbook before November 30, 2015. “One of the greatest strengths of this competition was the opportunity to create, organize, plan and implement their yearbook marketing campaign,” DECA advisor Myra Bost said.

www.LakeviewSpartans.org

“The campaign had a direct impact on yearbook sales so they were able to see true results from their marketing strategies.” On December 5, 2015, Elliott and Stafford submitted a video explaining their marketing campaign and its results. Five weeks later, they were on their way to California to present their project’s analysis, methodology and results to Herff Jones executives. “Participating in this competition was a great opportunity to bring Lila and Erin’s two passions, DECA and journalism, together,” yearbook advisor Jodi Darland said. “It was an excellent real world experience for them.” The trip provided Elliott and Stafford with the opportunity of a lifetime and a chance to network with others who have a passion for the business aspect of a yearbook program. Even though they did not win overall, just being finalists and making connections with Herff Jones executives and members from other states’ DECA chapters was a success for Elliott and Stafford. “This challenge set me up for future success in the business world and I couldn’t be more thankful,” Stafford said.

LHS DECA members, Erin Stafford and Lila Elliott hold a poster representing their Three Days of Yearbook Festivities marketing campaign. The campaign earned them a spot as one of the top three competitors in the nation.

Minges Brook Elementary wins national contest Minges Brook Elementary is thrilled to announce that it is one of two schools nationally to win $25,000 in Bridgestone’s Fuel the Drive fundraising contest. Minges Brook Elementary School will use the prize money to purchase new playground equipment. Prize monies will supplement funds raised by the school’s Parent Teacher Association (PTA), making it possible to complete plans set early in the year to upgrade the outdoor play area. The Minges Brook Parent Teacher Association, whose members nominated the school for the contest, garnered widespread participation in the online voting process which determined contest winners. Supporters from across the state and beyond rallied to provide new equipment for students to use during the school day and for neighborhood children to enjoy during non-school hours. Contest, continued on page 3

Students Clare Tobin and Jake VanDis discuss acts of kindness they can do for others.

Week of Kindness at LMS January 25-29 was designated as a week of kindness at Lakeview Middle School. The idea for the week came to LMS WEB leaders while brainstorming ideas for a service learning project. Students were challenged to perform as many kind deeds as possible in one week. Each student was given a checklist to check off their acts of kindness as the week progressed. WEB leaders set goals to have 600 students participate and perform over 15,000 acts of kindness, creating a culture of kindness on the campus of LMS while increasing unity and respect. By participating in this national event, the hope is that once students get a taste of making others feel good, they will continue to do good on their own, long after the challenge has ended. Over 2 million students are expected to participate in the Week of Kindness across the nation.

Splash, from page 1 “This fruit starts with the letter ‘C’. The outside of the fruit is about the color of your desk, but the inside is orange”. A few hands shot up! “Cantaloupe!” Several of the students had not tasted cantaloupe but with gentle encouragement, were willing to try. Mrs. Middleton asks students to take 2 bites of each food item, then they can throw the sample away if they don’t like it. She also challenges them to look for the food when they are at the grocery store. SPLASH is an acronym for Shaping Positive Lifestyles & Attitudes through School Health. The SPLASH program is supported by funding from the United States Department of Agriculture (USDA). The primary objectives for SPLASH are to increase fruit and vegetable consumption and increase physical activity. SPLASH lessons include a nutrition education portion, a physical activity, and a taste testing for the students. Currently there are 15 schools throughout Calhoun County and Barry County who benefit from the SPLASH program. The CISD applies to the Michigan Fitness Foundation on a yearly basis for funding. The CISD collaborates with the Calhoun County Public Health Department, Michigan State University Extension and Van Buren ISD on the project. Contest, from page 2 In a Feb. 1 press release, Bridgestone named both Minges Brook Elementary and World Compass Academy, Castle Rock, Colorado, as grand prize winners. According to the release, “based on the quality of contest submissions and the narrow margin of votes between the top two entries, Bridgestone was inspired to award two grand prizes.”

FIRST Tech Challenge (FTC): A Robotics Competition at Lakeview High School On December 19, 2015, Lakeview High School played host to the FIRST Tech Challenge (FTC) Michigan State Championship under the direction of John Burdette, LHS Physics Teacher and Coach of FIRST Robotics Team 4327. The event featured the top 64 qualifying middle school robotics teams competing for the title of FTC Michigan State Champion. Some 1,500 people from cities ranging from Zeeland to Marysville to Marquette brought teams and robots to the event. In attendance were the director of FIRST Tech

LHS students practicing coding during the Hour of Code event.

Hour of Code at Lakeview High School This past December, Lakeview High School joined in an Hour of Code, a global movement reaching tens of millions of students in 180+ countries. The impetus for this project came from LHS Mathematics teacher Mrs. Sandi Cover and utilized resources from http://code.org LHS students were able participate in Hour of Code through a regular class or by stopping by the Library. Students interested in coding may still log into this site. They may also sign up for Coding as a course at Lakeview for next year. The introduction to coding gave students an appreciation of the power of technology and a sense of pride in their own ability to thrive in a digital world where computer programs underlie all aspects of our lives. Bridgestone created the Fuel the Drive contest as a way to help fund a new or existing, K-12 school-based athletic program or wellness initiative. Fuel the Drive is part of the company's partnership with the National Football League (NFL) initiative, NFL PLAY. For more information, visit www.FueltheDrive.com

Challenge worldwide, Ken Johnson, our local state representative, Dr. John Bizon, as well as Lakeview Alumnus Governor Rick Snyder. The Michigan Department of Education has supported FIRST teams through a series of grants in past years thanks to the passion and leadership of Governor Snyder. The hosting team, Lakeview's own FIRST Robotics Competition Team 4327, joined together with the Lakeview National Honor Society to put on a smoothly run and highly contested event. <www.

qbranchrobotics.com>. In the end, the winning alliance composed of teams from Lapeer, Zeeland and Allendale walked away as champions. All students, however, emerged as winners, not only by learning such important life skills as communication and teamwork but also by gaining the satisfaction of inventing something new and by having fun in the process. Lakeview looks forward to hosting a high school level FIRST Robotics Competition at LHS on March 11 & 12. Mark your calendars!

Neighborhood Planning Councils (NPCs) are resident-based groups that serve an important and specific purpose in our community. The purpose of Neighborhood Planning Councils is to provide a forum to inform and discuss with neighborhood residents and representatives of the City staff and City Commissioners, issues and concerns of that neighborhood. Generally, the City informs the NPC of facts and potential results of pending decisions, opportunities or other changes. The NPC discusses and decides what, if any, recommendations it would like to make or strategies they would like to develop.
