The Return of the Fifth Graders Lakeview Middle School 5th graders returned to Sherman Lake Camp after a three year absence in part through donations funded by Sherman Lake YMCA, Lakeview School District, Battle Creek Rotary Club and the Binda Foundation. Two additional donors wish to remain anonymous. Fifth graders enjoyed two nights and two and a half days enjoying the great Michigan outdoors while bonding with their classmates and teachers. Sometimes, unbeknownst to them, they learned a thing or two about themselves. Fifth grade teacher Jordan Dilno learned what a great opportunity being outside the traditional classroom is to see his students willing to succeed and push themselves outside of their comfort zone. Mr. Dilno learned the three levels of student learning zones; comfort, learning, panic. He watched as one of his students, Faith K. who had set a goal for herself inside her learning zone, to go halfway to the top of the climbing wall. To his amazement, as Faith reached her goal, she stated that she was going to enter her panic zone and push her way all the way to top. Faith beamed and waved to Mr. Dilno as she reached the top. The great Michigan outdoors is always a fickle friend. Two of the 5th grade groups had beautiful 70 degree days, while the middle group had rain and 50 degree weather. Kloey D. did not let the weather get her down. Instead she enjoyed the indoor activities such as her favorite, the rock climbing wall. Ronald B. said that the weather was not fun, but staying up late and having fun with his friends made up for the rain. Joel P. who also had to deal with his fickle weather friend made new friends with his camp counselor who was “really cool and showed me new things I have never done before.” The top cool thing on Joel’s list was archery.
New teacher Ashley Roberts felt that camp was a great opportunity for students and teachers to experience team building. She felt that facility at Sherman Lake was beautiful and the counselors were well trained and educated and supplied her and her students with an unforgettable experience.
After returning from camp, the teachers and students feel that the team building, HCRR (honesty, caring, respect, responsibility) and lasting memories has created a bond that has carried over to the classroom setting the stage for comfort, learning and panic to take place in the traditional classroom.
The staff and students of Lakeview Middle School cannot thank the Battle Creek Rotary Club and the Binda Foundation for their very generous donations that allowed the 5th grade teachers and students this very important educational and team building experience.
Representative Bizon Visits Riverside Elementary, Learns from Teachers and Students Representative John Bizon, MD, visited Riverside Elementary in an effort to keep a pulse on education in his community. Riverside was just one stop in a series of Battle Creek area school visits. Bizon learned about Riverside’s commitment to the Professional Learning Communities process and saw firsthand what grade-level instructional differentiation looks like. In addition, he visited a kindergarten classroom who showed him their daily patriotic routine to honor the United States. “I greatly enjoyed joining our bright students at Riverside Elementary last month, meeting with their very capable principal, and talented teachers,” said Bizon. “I can see why everyone speaks so highly of this school.”
LMS National Junior Honor Society Gives Back The 8th grade NJHS hosted a Spaghetti Dinner on November 12th as a community service project to help provide Thanksgiving dinners to those in need. They were able to raise $1000 which was donated to God’s Kitchen who provides the meals. All 70 members of NJHS participated in this event. There were special performances from the 7th and 8th grade Spartan Singers and Masque cast. Ryth Seiler and Perla Fuentas performed a flute/clarinet duet. Artwork created by various students was displayed throughout the cafeteria to create an exquisite dining experience. This event brought together many families of the Battle Creek community to support a great cause!

Minges Brook Morning Book Club In the fall of 2014, Mrs. Shepherd, Instructional Coach, at Minges Brook Elementary noticed that students who were below grade level in reading often did not have ‘just right’ books at home to read every day. Just right books should be very easy to read, have very few if any tricky words and be a book students easily understand and enjoy. Research shows when we read books that are too hard for us we often create an even greater gap from where we are as a reader and where our grade level benchmark is, or in others words fall further behind. So Mrs. Shepherd created the Morning Book Club so students could check out just right books every day. The program helps kids take ownership for their reading growth. Before kids come to book club Mrs. Shepherd meets with them and talks about why they are at Morning Book Club. She uses the analogy of running a race - if we are behind and continue running the same, we will always stay the same distance behind. If we run less, we will get farther behind. If we want to catch up we need to run faster than those ahead of us. The same holds true for reading. In order to catch up we need to read MORE than our peers or we will always be that much behind them. They also talk about what their goal is and how book club works. Minges Brook Elementary has seen great gains from students by simply reading more and having someone (Mrs.
Shepherd) to touch base with them daily and check in on them every couple of weeks in the classroom. Reading scores have increased at an accelerated rate for all classrooms with students involved in Morning Book Club and some students have even pulled themselves up an entire year in just a few short months in the book club due to their dedication, effort and personal desire to grow using the book club opportunity. Mrs. Shepherd said, “The students do the work. I am just their encourager, data collector, (reading) problem solving friend. We don’t have as many interventions available for our upper elementary students so this book club intervention has proven to be a student self-driven intervention that puts them in the driver’s seat of their own reading progress and success.“ Students in grades 2-4 that are below grade level in reading or that have a tendency of sliding down and back up easily are invited to join Morning Book Club. Mrs. Bachman, Learning Support Coach and Ms. Wilkins, parent volunteer, help with the program. Currently there are 70 students who participate in the book club. As the school year continues more students will be added to the club, including some students in 1st grade. Third grader, Quinton, summed up Morning Book Club by saying, “I like getting books that are just right for me”.
