There is no doubt that there are amazing people in Battle Creek. I remember when one of our customers paid $5.00 to $10.00 for their food and left a $10.00 tip, wow! They told us that they want us to be successful. These amazing people have supported us economically and morally. That’s how we are still open and sharing our healthy food. January is School Board Recognition Month— a time to salute the work of our volunteer school board members Your Lakeview School District Board of Education members are: President Kathleen Moore, Vice President Mary Jane Cipcic, Treasurer Eric Greene, Secretary Lisa Carpenter, and Trustees Dr. Jeffrey Andert, Mike Ormstead and Brad Palmer. Showing appreciation for the important work of school boards should be a year-round process, but too often we neglect to recognize the dedication and hard work of those who represent us. This January, the staff and students of our district are
asking all members of the community to take a moment and thank a school board member. These elected officials represent your interest in educating our community’s youth, establishing policies and making decisions that help shape the future of our education system. They bear responsibility for an annual budget of $37 million, 3,900 students, 750 employees and six school buildings. They are citizens whose decisions affect our children and build our communities.
Our board of education, and the hundreds like it across the state, preserve the core of our democracy— public education. They ensure that decisions on school programming are made by people we’ve elected to represent our community’s values, culture and circumstances. Thank you to members of the Lakeview School District Board of Education for ensuring the needs of our community are met by our public schools.
State Librarian Visits Lakeview Schools
Photo courtesy of Lakeview High School Log
Randy Riley, the State Librarian of Michigan, recently visited Lakeview School District in Battle Creek, representing State Superintendent Brian Whiston who has set a goal to improve Customer Service for all local school districts. Whiston, assisted by his Deputy Superintendents and Office Directors is determined to highlight positive educational accomplishments while finding out how MDE can offer further support. Lakeview Librarian Margaret Lincoln was pleased that Randy Riley could stop in Lakeview HS Library during his visit. McKenzie Clair, a 12th grade student in Bobbie Mathis’ 3D Art class presented a most appropriate gift to the State Librarian, an Altered Book art project created from a weeded/discarded library book. An earlier series of Library Media Connection articles gives background about the Altered Book project, a successful collaborative effort between art teacher and librarian. HCRR, What’s That? What does HCRR (pronounced ‘hicker’) mean to you? Minges Brook Elementary staff have been using the HCRR model for several years to help our students learn and thrive. But what is HCRR? I asked students for help in decoding the HCRR letters. H stands for Honesty ….tell me a way you or someone shows honesty? 4th Grader Emilie: If you find a HCRR ticket on the ground don’t erase the name on it instead give it to your teacher. 2nd grader Henry: Tell the truth. HCRR continued on page 2

LHS Invitational
Saturday, January 9 was a fun and successful day of swimming and diving for the LHS boys swim and dive team as they hosted top ranked teams from around the state at the LHS Invitational. Multiple swimmers posted state qualifying times including seniors: Scott Carstens (50 free 21.84 and 100 back 53.21) Sam Myers (200 free 149.07 and 500 free 459.68) Braden Shanks (50 free 22.50 and 100 free 49.47) and Tabor Smyth (100 fly 54.26 and 100 back 54.61). Carstens, Myers and Shanks have been previously named All-State in 2014 and 2015 and Smyth in 2015. They all look forward to competing again at the Division 2 State Meet March 11,12 at Saginaw Valley State University. Also with a first time state qualifying time was junior Will Kaspari (500 free 502.46). In diving sophomore Levi Youmans placed second (437.45) and senior Austin Nemire placed fourth (410.60). Divers will qualify for the State Meet at Regionals at LHS on March 3. HCRR from page 1 C stands for Caring…. please tell me a way you can be caring? Isaiah (2nd gr): Keep your hands and feet to yourself. Allison (4th gr): If you see someone who is hurt ask if you can help them. R stands for Respect ….what does it look like when someone shows respect? Colin (3rd gr): Use your manners- like saying “Thank You”. Luke (1st gr): saying “Sorry”, when someone gets hurt. The other R stands for Responsible ….please give me an example of being Responsible… Sandra (3rd gr): Picking up after yourself. Hunter (3rd gr): Being careful of your library books, like when you are turning the pages. Students can earn HCRR tickets throughout the day by demonstrating honesty, car-
ing, respect and/or responsibility. Every morning a HCRR ticket from each classroom is drawn. The winning students can choose from a variety of rewards with currently the most popular award being a 10 minute visit to another classroom. Research has shown that students’ achievement greatly increases when there are positive relationships with teachers, staff and other students. To help everyone get on the same page, Minges Brook staff had the opportunity to spend a morning in August at Sherman Lake YMCA learning more about HCRR and practical tools for using HCRR not only in the classroom but in all areas of our school day. Studies have found that the more HCRR in the school, the greater the learning. Be sure to ask your student how they were HCRR today!

Camryn Mueller is fitted with new shoes for Girls on the Run by Chad Carlisle from MC Sports, GOTR sponsor.
It’s that time of year again! Riverside 3rd and 4th graders eagerly awaited their turn to be fit for their running shoes in preparation for the 2016 Girls on the Run season which officially kicks off its 11-week program the week of February 29. In addition to Lakeview Middle School, all district elementary buildings participate in Girls on the Run. Riverside Elementary Site Coordinator Laura Parsons is beginning her fifth year coaching the girls. “GOTR is an amazing program that uplifts our girls and helps them learn how to be themselves. We call it ‘living outside the girl box.’ They can be themselves and not get caught up in what social media defines a girl to be.” Participants work through approximately 20 lessons from a curriculum that combines training for a 5K (3.1 miles) running event with lessons that inspire girls to become independent thinkers, enhance their problem solving skills, and make healthy decisions for a lifetime. This year’s 5K event takes place May 20 at Harper Creek High School.
LAKEVIEW HS LEGACY BOOKS PROJECT RECEIVES GRANT FROM LSEF Dr. Margaret Lincoln, Lakeview Schools District Librarian, is grateful to the LSEF (Lakeview Schools Educational Foundation) for again supporting the Legacy Books project. Thanks to LSEF funding, it will be possible to purchase new books chosen by the 2016 Seniors and donated to LHS library. Legacy Books will follow the tradition of being housed in a separate leisure reading section of the library and identified by a Spartan sticker on the book spine and a commemorative book plate with student comments on the inside cover. The creation of the Legacy Books collection addresses a need to provide new engaging and quality reading material to LHS students. It also aligns with the district’s high school English/Language Arts curriculum and the Choice Reading Program to create life-long readers. Students are challenged to read books with increasing text complexity, beginning with books they truly enjoy, and as a result develop a vital lifelong skill. Funding for grants and 19 scholarships is possible because of financial support from community members and businesses. If you would like to support an existing or new grant or scholarship please contact us at lsefspartans.org or visit our webpage at lakeviewspartans.org>LSEF (icon). Thank you to all our supporters! The Legacy Books project ensures that a worthy collection of fiction and nonfiction titles is made available to future generations of Lakeview students.
Kendall Truex (left) with Dr. Margaret Lincoln, District Librarian (right) was a student in the Information Literacy course and was a driving force behind the revival of the Legacy Books project. Kendall proposed the idea as part of a course assignment to develop a teen services project. Dr. Lincoln then was motivated to push the project forward with the LSEF grant request.
Payton Russell, Curtis Falbe, Sha’Nasia LeBlanc, and Alicia Carnell work on making blankets.
Fifth Graders getting ready to deliver their basket to the family they adopted.
LMS Gives Back This Holiday Season Giving is better than receiving. That was evident with the number of staff and students involved in various service projects giving to families and organizations in need this season. Partnering with Santa’s Helper, fifteen families were adopted by many classrooms, NJHS, and the office. These families were given gifts, food, daily necessities, and a complete holiday meal. By the gracious giving, there were smiles on many faces.
One of the sixth grade teams made fourteen fleece blankets. Seven were donated to the Haven of Rest and the remaining to the Charitable Union where they will be distributed to those in need. All material was donated from parents and teachers. LMS RAK Club (Random Acts of Kindness) assembled thirty Blessing Bags which were donated to the Haven of Rest. These bags were filled with health care and sanitary items as well

as snacks. Each bag also included a positive note. This project was made possible through the generous donations of teachers, parents, and LMS Health Center. Hayden Mueller a sixth grade student involved in all three projects expressed, “It feels great to give to others because I know I’m doing something good. I’m looking forward to doing more projects like that this year.”
