Avenue, Richland Michigan 49083. Gull Lake Community Schools accepts School of Choice applications for all of the programs and buildings identified above and is TUITION FREE for students who reside in the Kalamazoo Regional Educational Service Agency or in an Intermediate School District contiguous to the Kalamazoo Regional Educational Service Agency (Allegan, Barry, Calhoun, St. Joseph, and VanBuren counties). Please be advised that Gull Lake Community Schools will be a “School of Choice” district for the 2014-15 school year. A non-resident applicant for admission to Gull Lake Community Schools under the Schools of Choice program shall not be granted or refused enrollment based on intellectual, academic, artistic, or other ability, talent, or accomplishments (lack thereof), or based on mental or physical disability. Gull Lake Community Schools will not grant or refuse enrollment based upon an applicant’s religion, race, color, national origin, sex, height, weight, marital status, athletic ability, or for any other reason or characteristic in violation of any state or federal law prohibiting discrimination in access to educational services. Applicants may also not be granted or refused enrollment based on age, except that Gull Lake Community Schools reserves the right to refuse to admit a non-resident applicant applying for a program that is not age appropriate for the applicant. Similarly, Gull Lake Community Schools may refuse to enroll or admit a non-resident applicant, if that applicant does not meet the same criteria, other than residence, that an applicant who is an educational resident of the District must meet to be accepted for enrollment in a grade, specialized, magnet, or intra-district choice school or program for which the applicant applies. Gull Lake Community Schools may also refuse to enroll a non-resident applicant if: (a) the applicant is or has been with the preceding two (2) years, suspended from another school; or (b) the applicant has at any time been expelled from another school; or (c) the applicant has at any time been convicted of a felony. Preference for enrollment will be given to nonresident applicants who reside in the same household as a pupil currently enrolled in one of the District’s programs. In the event applicants exceed current enrollment limits, a random draw system will be used to determine which pupils are permitted to enroll. In order for Gull Lake Community Schools to enroll a non-resident pupil who resides in a school district located in a contiguous intermediate school district, and who is eligible for special educational programs and services, or who is a child with disabilities (as defined under the Individuals with Disabilities Education Act, or its successor statute), Gull Lake Community Schools must have a written agreement with the applicant’s resident school district for the purpose of providing the applicant with a free appropriate public education. This written agreement must include, but is not limited to, an agreement on the responsibility for the payment of added costs of special education programs and services for the applicant. The written agreement must also address how it can be amended in the event of the significant changes in the cost or level of special education programs or services required by the applicant.

ViewPoints Safety drill planned at Lakeview Middle School The staff and students of Lakeview Middle School will practice a school-wide safety and evacuation drill on Friday, May 16, 2014. That morning, students and staff will practice lockdown procedures while area emergency services personnel conduct safety training in the building. Passers-by will notice the presence of police and fire vehicles and ambulances at Lakeview Middle School on Friday, May 16, 2014. The drill will help evaluate the quality of our response plan, evacuation procedures, and response times for District departments including guidance, transportation and Central Office. The drill will not only help Lakeview staff improve our safety plan, but it will also help each of the organizations participating improve their response to a potential crisis at our schools. Planning for the drill began last fall and has included monthly meetings with representatives from area emergency service organizations. Special thanks are in order for the many parents who volunteered to help make the drill a success.

Riverside promotes healthy choices Start the morning out right, walk to school with all your might! Riverside students, families and staff joined forces in April to raise awareness about the importance of making healthy lifestyle choices. On April 17, students and staff walked to school. Even students who normally ride the bus were given a chance to stretch their legs, thanks to the help of our transportation department! That evening, local businesses promoting healthy lifestyles were showcased at Riverside’s Annual Health Fair. Students and parents enjoyed a variety of activities and learned about some of the many healthy, fun activities available in our community.

LSEF Spring Grant Awards
Lakeview School District is partnering with Project 20/20 to engage teachers, staff, parents, students, community members and business leaders in conversations to help shape the future of education in the district. Over the past few months, Project 20/20 has met with hundreds of district stakeholders to better understand people's aspirations for education, to identify opportunities and conditions that need to change to ensure all students receive a high quality education and to discover what we can do to make sure that every student has the opportunity to succeed. A final meeting to gather community input will be held on Thursday, May 22, 2014, from 5:30 – 7:30 PM in the Lakeview Middle School Library. The information gathered in these conversations will be used to review the district’s mission and end statements (results to be achieved) and to identify potential roadblocks to realizing those ends. This engagement process will increase public knowledge of the district’s challenges and successes as well as re-engage the public so that we can collectively work together to serve students even better.
The Lakeview Schools Educational Foundation (LSEF) this spring awarded grant monies to advance teaching and learning to three Lakeview teachers. Lakeview High School teacher John Burdette received a $600 Mary Ellen Vanderveer Grant to support work of the high school robotics club. Mary Ellen Vanderveer, past Trustee and President of the Lakeview Board of Education, was a highly respected and dedicated volunteer community leader. Throughout her trusteeship, she listened, advised, provided vision and led. She was quiet and reserved; however, when she spoke, everyone listened. Mrs. Vanderveer's family and many friends have contributed funds to establish grants for staff, Board or administrative improvement. The purpose of these funds is to advance teaching and learning in the Lakeview School District. Minges Brook Elementary teachers Shannon Shepherd and Monica Crider received a $500 Robert D. Spencer Grant to offset the cost of a summer conference on Choice Theory. The Dr. Robert D. Spencer Education Grant is awarded in the spring to an instructional employee of the Lakeview School District who is interested in developing their knowledge and skills concerning delivery and assessment of effective instructional practices. Activities financially supported by the grant include: college classes, instructionally focused seminars/workshops and/or training activities focused on improvement of instructional methodology and/or student learning. Lakeview’s Margaret Lincoln receives Distinguished Service Award The Calhoun Area School Board Members Association (CASBMA) presented three prestigious awards at its annual dinner meeting on April 23, 2014. Marion Ramer, Association President announced that this year’s recipient of the Distinguished Professional Award was Lakeview School District Librarian Margaret Lincoln. The Distinguished Citizen Award was presented to Floyd Beneker of Marshall and a Special Commendation was given posthumously to James R.C. Hazel, Jr., of Battle Creek. Also honored at the awards dinner were Lakeview School District Board Secretary James Davis for 15 years of service on the Calhoun Intermediate School District Board and Lakeview School District Board Trustee Neal Vanderbilt for achieving Michigan Association of School Board Members Level One Certification. The Lakeview School District was pleased to nominate Margaret (Gigi) Lincoln for the 2014 CASBMA Professional Award. Gigi is dedicated to educating current and future generations on the history and significance of the Holocaust. She has combined this passion with her expertise in instructional technology to bring multiple educational exhibits and learning opportunities to the students, teachers and communities of Calhoun County. Gigi in 2002, 2003, 2005, and again in 2007, was instrumental in securing and executing funding from the W.K. Kellogg Foundation to bring Holocaust exhibits and experts to Battle Creek. Gigi organized classroom visits for over 8,000 Calhoun County students to visit these exhibits and provided instructional resources and support for teachers. She also worked with community partners to open these exhibits and presentations to the greater community. Gigi continues to address social issues through presentations and professional publications and through the creation of instructional resources.
