Riverside Science Fair Encourages Students to Find Answers to Their Questions
Several members of Riverside’s Fourth Grade Recorder Club learn about composing music during a before-school music education session.
Music and the Recorder — Riverside 4th Graders Extend Music Education A group of Riverside fourth graders, under the direction of their music teacher, Paula Carr, come to school early to extend their understanding of making music. Using the recorder, students learn the physics of a closed tube instrument as well as how to read music. The recorder is familiar to grade-school children and has been around for centuries. Its usefulness in the elementary grades is primarily due to its lightweight, low cost, and ability to enhance student’s knowledge of wind instruments.
“I wanted to give students a chance to extend their music education and practice outside of the traditional school day, so we formed a Recorder Club,” explained Carr. Riverside’s Recorder Club meets every other Friday, before school, and teaches musical topics including Composing, Tone Production, Advanced Notes, and Concert Selections. The Club will showcase their musical talent during a Recorder Program on April 1.
Does hand sanitizer really work? Which brand of bubble gum blows the biggest bubble? Will a flower change the color of its water? These are all questions that Riverside students answered by using the investigative process during their school-wide Science Fair January 28. “Every year students look forward to presenting their findings regarding their most pressing questions. It’s fun to see families work together to reveal their results through visual presentations and data notebooks,” said Karrie Nasers, one of Riverside Science Fair coordinators. Nasers along with Riverside teacher Amanda Morgan have coordinated the school’s fair for the past several years.

Prairieview Operation Fit
In correlation with our Operation Fit Grant that Prairieview has had the pleasure of taking part in this year, they have incorporated Workout Wednesday. Prairieview students and staff are shown the exercises of the week first thing
on Wednesday morning then, at 1:28, there is a school wide workout. This is a great way to get the school moving!! The students love the idea that their teachers take part in this activity with them.

Prairieview 3rd & 4th grade student athletes warm up as part of the school’s hockey league.
He Shoots and He Scores!! For the past 5 years, Prairieview Elementary School has had their own hockey league, led by teachers Mr. Lindsay and Mr. Silver. Every winter 3rd and 4th graders have the opportunity to participate in the indoor league. All students are eligible MISSION & VISION STATEMENT as long as they are great Providing educational programs in a students first!! Great students safe learning environment that develop knowledgeable, healthy, socially responsible show good sportsmanship in and out of the classroom. citizens in the global community. Every Tuesday and Thursday
for six weeks students train with their teams and then compete with each other. Every week the students are required to complete a 30 minute study hall session because, as we tell the kiddos, they are students first and athletes second. Just another great example of how Prairieview is a community school that puts their kiddos first!!!
Minges Brook Elementary has had the pleasure to partner with Covenant Hope Church and Kids Hope USA for the last 6 years. Kids Hope USA is a national church-owned, school based mentoring program. Their motto is ‘One Child. One Hour. One Church. One School.’ The basic premise is one caring adult mentoring one at-risk student for one hour every week can result in huge impact. Kids Hope believes when a child feels loved and valued, they are better able to learn, grow and succeed. Before being sent to a school, mentors are trained in developing appropriate relationship skills in young students, as well as to abide by the rules of the school. Kids Hope respects church-state separation. Currently there are six Kids Hope Mentors meeting with six children at Minges Brook Elementary. Roger Grandia, pastor at Covenant Hope Church and Kids Hope Mentor since 2013, said he believes the consistency of one mentor meeting with one student for one hour per week is key. Mentors work with the classroom teachers to find out any areas their student might be struggling with such as anger issues, shyness, loneliness, or any other character issues. A fourth grade boy who is being mentored by a Kids Hope volunteer said, “I like it when Jack (his mentor) comes in. We talk and play games. I really like it when he brings in play-doh”. Another mentor (Jan) said, “My student wrote me a letter about having a good day.” For more information on Kids Hope USA visit: www.kidshopeusa.org.

LMS RAK Club Spreads Love Minges Brook Kids Care Club The Minges Brook Kids Care Club recently volunteered their time at the Food Bank of South Central Michigan. With the help of teacher and parent chaperones, students assembled over 1,455 after-school packs that are distributed to students at local
elementary schools who are at risk of going hungry over the weekend. Students also had the opportunity to take a tour of the facility and find out where the food comes from and how it is distributed throughout our community.
The Lakeview Middle School Random Acts of Kindness (RAK) Club decided to spread some love for Valentine’s Day this year. With donations from parents of RAK members, they were able to assemble over 90 treat bags for staff members at the middle school. They also made close to 80 Valentine cards for children in Kalamazoo Bronson Children’s Hospital. Two gift boxes were filled with coloring books, small games, stickers, crayons, and cards before they were delivered to the hospital. The Veterans at the Fort Custer VA received a large envelope filled with thoughtful cards also. Many lives were touched by the hard work of these caring students.
LMS Participates in Great Kindness Challenge During the week of January 25th, Lakeview Middle School WEB leaders and Random Act of Kindness (RAK) members promoted the first Great Kindness Challenge. There were 311 students who participated with over 3,000 acts of kindness. LMS joined 4,000 other schools in creating a safe, supportive, and dynamic school environment. From helping someone if they are hurt, smiling at everyone, picking up trash off the ground... every kind act matters. Imagine if every student in the school continues to perform kind acts every single
day. We will build a school culture of acceptance, tolerance, unity, and respect for everyone. We will offer to help people, be a kind friend, say thank you to teachers, hold the door open for someone, or entertain someone with a happy dance. The students who chose to participate were excited for the challenge and have continued their enthusiasm by spreading the “kindness bug” throughout the building.

To Flint, With Love Tanner Underwood, an eighth grader at Lakeview Middle School was concerned about the water crisis in Flint. So he decided to take action. He went door to door in his neighborhood and collected over 500 cans and bottles to return to raise money for the people of Flint. He then presented the National Junior Honor Society with a two-week challenge: collect even
more returnables as a Flint fundraiser. In all, NJHS returned over 5,000 cans and bottles and will send a $500 check to the United Way of Genesee County’s Flint Water Fund to support the people of Flint. 100% of donations go directly to resources to combat the polluted water, with absolutely no administrative costs subtracted from the funds.

Library Card Signup Project Willard Public Library and Lakeview High School Library recently coordinated efforts to hold a library card signup drive on school premises. Over the course of three days, Willard Librarians brought along the technology necessary to create library cards for LHS students. While that activity was going on, Lakeview Librarian Margaret Lincoln gave 34 separate instructional presentations to English classes on how to connect to the eBooks, audio books, movies, music, magazines and other digitized resources that students could immediately access at no cost using their new Willard Library cards. Dr. Lincoln created a screencast recapping these instructions at http:// bitly.com/WillardScreencast. Lakeview’s Channel 101 Broadcast Journalism class produced a promo at http://vimeo.com/152731166 for the project which represents an example of successful school/public library cooperation!
CONGRATULATIONS to the Lakeview High School instrumental music ensembles who performed February 26th at the MSBOA Festival at Plainwell High School. The wonderful scores reflect the tremendous growth and dedication of LHS and their music director Mr. Brian Massey to the fine arts! A huge round of applause for the ensembles and Director Brian Massey. L Wind Ensemble: I, I, I, I - I L Symphonic Band: II, II, II, I- II L Philharmonic: II, II, I, II - II

These projects focus on both the students’ personal interests as well as making positive impacts in the community. With the help of various workshops, guest speakers, and mentors, students are creating action plans to execute their ambitious and creative projects. Anyone can attend the Passion Gallery on May 18th to hear the student stories about their projects. To learn more about or donate to Project Passion, please visit: http://www.projectpassion.org.

Neighborhood Planning Councils (NPCs) are resident-based groups that serve an important and specific purpose in our community. The purpose of Neighborhood Planning Councils is to provide a forum to inform and discuss with neighborhood residents and representatives of the City staff and City Commissioners, issues and concerns of that neighborhood. Generally, the City informs the NPC of facts and potential results of pending decisions, opportunities or other changes. The NPC discusses and decides what, if any, recommendations it would like to make or strategies they would like to develop.

The rest of our local roads would be included in LRP #8 and LRP #9. We have also added the following local roads on a shared basis with Convis Township: 12 MILE ROAD from L DRIVE N to just past BROWN ROAD 12 MILE ROAD just north of SMITH ROAD to the County Line We are also looking to see what may happen in Emmett Township with their possible local road millage. The eastwest boundary line between Pennfield Township and Emmett Township divides the following local roads: L DRIVE NORTH (between 11 Mile Road and Palmiter Road), DICK STREET, LAGRANGE AVENUE, RAYMOND ROAD NORTH, EDISON AVENUE, BRIDGEN DRIVE, KIMBALL AVENUE, MAXWELL AVENUE and MILL ROAD If Emmett Township should fail to pass a local road millage, or if they choose not to create a special assessment district for their portion of these local roads, Pennfield Township will repave only to the boundary lines of these roads along CHAPIN AVENUE and WILLISON AVENUE. The County Road Department will need to properly address the serious drainage problems we are experiencing in the area of SHARON AVENUE, MONTFORD AVENUE, OXFORD STREET, EDGEMONT STREET and PARK STREET before any repaving can occur in this area. We also working with the County Road Department on possible alternatives to the current asphalt curbing that exists in the area of SHARON AVENUE (east of Roosevelt Avenue), VAN ARMON, BRADLEY STREET, EATON STREET and HOPKINS STREET. “ The day I went to the hospital, I was working here on my farm. I started to feel a bit poorly so I went back to the house to see if it would pass. At first it just felt like a stomachache, so even with my family history of heart attack, it really didn’t occur to me I was having one. Unfortunately, the feeling kept getting worse, so my neighbor took me to my local hospital, Bronson LakeView. They quickly determined it was a heart attack and transferred me by ambulance to the cath lab at Bronson in Kalamazoo. From the time I was admitted to the time my heart was working right again, it took less than two hours. They were phenomenal. I’m really fortunate to still be here with my family. I owe that to the team at Bronson.” Joe, Paw Paw, Michigan To watch Joe’s story and learn more about heart and vascular care at Bronson, visit bronsonpositivity.com/heart.
