Good teachers are costly, but bad teachers cost more. –Bob Talbert Teaching skills should be continually sharpened, with time to take courses, attend conferences, and share lessons and tips with other teachers, online, and in person. http://www.edutopia.org/big-ideas-better-schools

Dear Friends:

For more than twenty-five years the Lakeview Schools Educational Foundation (LSEF) has supported the teachers and students in the Lakeview School District through grants and scholarships. We are currently administering 19 scholarship funds and five grant funds. During the last year LSEF awarded $10,350 in scholarships and $1,660 in sports scholarships, mostly to graduating seniors, plus $3,465 in grants to the teaching staff to enhance their skills and learning opportunities for students. We thank all who have contributed in establishing the funds and those who have added to our funds over the years. Our primary mission is to diligently monitor the funds in our care and distribute them consistently as the fund originators intended. Additionally, the LSEF Board is committed to making LSEF even more visible and productive in the years ahead. To that end we recently hired a part-time administrative assistant through a generous contribution from the Battle Creek Community Foundation. This will help the Board with organizational tasks, but also we hope to do a better job: • Enhancing the visibility of LSEF • Reaching out to students, parents, and the Lakeview community and businesses to partner in expanding scholarship and grant opportunities for Lakeview. This can include contributing to existing funds or creating new funds to meet identified needs. We are blessed with a community of individuals with many talents who are committed to investing in quality education and in the success of the next generation. Part of that includes time tutoring a student, volunteering with PTA or other school activities, and serving on committees or boards. It also includes finances. Regularly give to those causes that you believe in and remember to include those causes (including LSEF) in your will or estate planning. We sincerely thank you for your ongoing support of the Lakeview School District, its students, and its staff. You may contact any member of the LSEF Board if you have any questions or suggestions. See the listing on this page. GO SPARTANS!

How do face painting, pumpkin pie and reading go together, you may ask? Well on Tuesday, Oct. 27,th Harvesting Literacy Family Night was held at Minges Brook Elementary. The night was jam packed with fun activities including face painting, cookie decorating, a photo booth, fall games outside and a yummy free dinner of hamburgers, hot dogs, potato salad and pumpkin pie! Harvesting Literacy Family Night was designed to provide opportunities for our families to better understand how they can help their child as a learner. Families met in their students’ classroom where they learned about the strategies used to be a better reader and listened as

students shared what they do in class, all in the effort to help our students become independent readers. Each student left with a reading strategies book mark for home use. Minges Brook Elementary and the United Way partnered together to host the Parent Involvement Harvesting Literacy Night. In addition to Minges Brook teachers and staff volunteering their time, volunteers from Covenant Hope Church, Lakeview High School Art teacher Bobbie Mathis and some of her art students and a few Lakeview Middle School students helped make the evening a wonderful success. There will be 2 more Parent Involvement evenings this school year.

Lakeview Middle School PTA Sponsors 19th Annual Spartan Strut During Homecoming week, Lakeview Middle School students collected donations for the 19th annual Spartan Strut. The Spartan Strut is a PTA sponsored fundraiser. Each grade level then celebrates by walking and dancing outside on the track for a half an hour, enjoying music by a dj, and having healthy snacks. This year, students raised over $12,000 which the PTA will use to fund special activities and events such as WATCH DOGS, Girls on the Run, Spelling Bees, Books for the library and classrooms, Spring Fling, academic competitions and opportunities, and other support for the staff and students. Neighborhood Planning Councils (NPCs) are resident-based groups that serve an important and specific purpose in our community. The purpose of Neighborhood Planning Councils is to provide a forum to inform and discuss with neighborhood residents and representatives of the City staff and City Commissioners, issues and concerns of that neighborhood. Generally, the City informs the NPC of facts and potential results of pending decisions, opportunities or other changes. The NPC discusses and decides what, if any, recommendations it would like to make or strategies they would like to develop.
