“I was training for a half marathon with my daughter when my knee pain became unbearable. I went to see an orthopedic specialist at Bronson Battle Creek. X-rays revealed my knee cartilage was completely gone. I’m young for a knee replacement, but there was no other option. I’m a mother of six. Life is hectic. I’m always looking after everyone. Now I was the one being looked after. The nurses are so dedicated. I can’t remember the last time I enjoyed such peace and quiet. Although Joint Camp was tough, I had the support I needed to flourish. My doctor told me that when he saw the damage to my knee during surgery he couldn’t believe how long I put up with it. I just hope others experiencing this severe level of pain realize they can get help, too.” Stephanie Sampson, Three Rivers, Michigan, August 26, 2014

Welcome Back! The 2014-15 school year is anticipated to be the best ever with many changes, improvements and a renewed focus on improving our relationships with students and the families we serve. It is a conscious effort to improve our communication both by the timely information we provide as well as structures put in place to better listen to our community. The website has a new design to better communicate. The community conversations which started last year will be a spring board to further planning and action this year, and I hope your students have come home and told stories of how all of our school personnel are making an effort to improve relationships. Research is very clear that to reach high academic achievement for all students, a school has to have high standards for rigor, relevance and relationships. We have always been focused on academic rigor and will continue to do so. We are making a strong, conscious effort to improve our focus on relevance and relationships. There is so much to inform you about that this first newsletter is just a “taste” of what is to follow. Newsletters to come will highlight and give much more detail on our curriculum improvements in the areas of career development, project based learning and Science, Technology, Engineering and Math (STEM). It will also detail our next steps to determine what to do with facility needs that plague our elementary and middle schools. We are planning our community dinner for October, and this will be a continuation of our community conversation from last year. We are fortunate to have many community partners that are supporting our school and we will highlight these efforts. All of this is very positive for our students and will help make this a great school year. Unfortunately, we also have to inform you of the financial situation facing the district. State financing of schools has severely impacted our school and, as proactive as we have tried to be, the impact is now impacting students, families and programs. The October newsletter will have a detailed historical review of what has led to the current situation, what the district has done in response, and future financial planning. So far, we have been able to provide excellent academic programs and continue to improve upon this excellence. Regardless of the financial pressures, we will not compromise our academic focus. I hope you are ready for a great school year as a Lakeview Spartan, we are!
Partnership Expands Preschool Opportunities This year, the number of Great Start Readiness Program (GSRP) classrooms located in Lakeview School District will increase to include one at each elementary building and two at Riverside Elementary School. This is made possible through a partnership between the Calhoun Intermediate School District (CISD) and Community Unlimited, a local GSRP provider. GSRP, is a state funded preschool program serving four-year-old children of families that qualify. The program focuses on building skills to ready students for the transition to kindergarten. The CISD oversees GSRP classrooms located in Calhoun County with the help of managing partners. In the past, Lakeview School District served as the managing partner for two GSRP classrooms located at Riverside Elementary School. Beginning this year, Community Unlimited will partner with the CISD to operate five GSRP classrooms now located in all Lakeview elementary schools. This move benefits local families and the district as it more than doubles the number preschool students served in Lakeview schools while saving the district an estimated $37,000. Parents can find information about GSRP preschool and other early learning opportunities online at: www.calhoungreatstart.org. A link is also available on the district website.
Incoming kindergarten students and their parents got a sneak peak at what it’s like to go to school at Minges Brook Elementary during KinderCamp.
Minges Brook Receives United Way Grant Minges Brook Elementary staff this summer welcomed Kindergarten students and families with help from the Battle Creek and Kalamazoo Region United Way. KinderCamp, held in late August, is one example of additional supports made possible by a $40,000 United Way grant that will greatly enhance Minges Brook staff's current work in the areas of reading and writing. Minges Brook Elementary Principal Laura Williams shared, “KinderCamp celebration is a dynamic shared experience that will be an excellent kick off to a child’s K-12 educational experience.” During the event, students and their families enjoyed a school meal, listened to stories, toured the school and learned about classmates and teachers. While KinderCamp focused on some of the school’s youngest learners, all Minges Brook students will benefit from resources made possible by the United Way Grant which will supplement work to: • Enrich classroom libraries by increasing the quality and number of take-home books available to students, • Provide teacher training in reading and writing workshop, • Create additional opportunities for parent engagement, • Mail just-right books to students each week over the summer, and • Engage adult and LHS student volunteer reading buddies to come in weekly and read to/ listen to Minges Brook students.

W.K. Kellogg Foundation Grant Supports Early Learning Lakeview School District aims to accelerate learning for elementary students thanks to the generosity of the W.K. Kellogg Foundation. The district has received approval for a three-year, $2.9 million grant to implement its K-3 Quality Learning Project starting this year. Parents of elementary students can look forward to learning more about the project which will include the implementation of Kindergarten transition programs, Summer Slide programs, and Reading Buddies programs at each of the district’s four elementary schools. Also included in the grant is funding for a literacy coach, a math coach, and a positive behavioral support specialist at each elementary building. Through these resources and support, the grant will help ensure the success of elementary students as measured by the number of students reaching and exceeding learning benchmarks, summer retention and positive behavior. Stay tuned for more information on this work!
