Page 2 – 2014 CALHOUN COUNTY FAIR

Celebrate year #166 at the Calhoun County Fair Agriculture was foremost in the minds of Calhoun

County’s settlers...hence the beginnings of regional fairs

which have been held for over a century and a half.

Chief Phineas Pamptopee and Mackey Shogequett of the Calhoun County Potawatomi Tribe, at the Calhoun County Fair in 1908.

The 2014 Calhoun County fair celebrates 166 years of exhibiting the pride and talents of county residents of all ages.

The first fairs were held in various locations in the city until 1848 when the Calhoun County Agricultural Society reorganized the event and held the new 1849 gathering on Capital Hill (now known as the fairgrounds) and made it a yearly event. Everyone loved the Fair! Wheel of Fortune, side shows, prize exhibits, produce, livestock, horse rac-

ing, games and much more. It became one of the main social gatherings of the year. It was often the only time people in the more rural areas got a chance to see old friends. Balloon ascensions, daredevil acts... all became a part of “The Fair.” Marshall High School’s first football game was played at the fairgrounds in 1894; the schools’ inexperi-

enced team was defeated by Olivet College, 60-0. Throughout the 1950s and the 60s, the fair grew and prospered. The gradual addition of new and bigger mechanical rides, demolition derbies, big name entertainers and “Girlie Shows,” added to the already immense entertainment of the county’s masses. Things were good and memories were made.

Small Animal Auction is Wednesday The 2014 Small Animal Auction is scheduled for Wednesday, Aug. 13, 6 p.m. Order of sale is rabbits, dairy starter calves, goats, poultry. 4-H members count on individuals and businesses to make the event a success. As with Friday’s Large Animal Auction, the event will take place in the covered arena.

Marshall’s Hometown Complete Automotive Service & Repair Shop

Lena Yaudes Boys & Girls Building filled with 4-H projects Each year hundreds of submissions from non-livestock 4-H clubs around Calhoun County are judged and displayed during the annual county fair. 4-H club members work all year learning how to create projects to submit to the fair - photography, horticulture, sewing, knitting, food preparation - visitors never know what they’ll see during Fair Week. Before the fair begins, youth turn in entry forms to the fair staff who then transmits this information to the

4-H Extension Service which produces guidelines for the judges. The Extension office lines up the judges with help from the various 4-H club superintendents. On the first Saturday of the fair, all the projects are lined up on tables in the covered arena where they are judged. Each entry is accompanied by a records notebook each member is required to submit which includes a marketing plan for the item. Before judging, volunteers work in the Boys & Girls Building to measure out the

space for their clubs’ booth and prepared the area to receive the members’ projects. After judging, each club takes its projects to the Boys & Girls Building and sets up its booth. The booth is then judged based on a 4-H club’s chosen theme and skill of execution. Projects are on display during Fair Week to the delight of parents, grandparents and friends of club members.

Demolition Derby is an Aug. 16 highlight

Endro car racing returns to the Calhoun County Fairgrounds on Wednesday, Aug. 13. The race begins at 7 p.m. in the grandstand.

Enduro cars race to the fairgrounds for second year Enduro car racing is an inexpensive type of automobile racing that takes its name from "endurance racing," since it consists of hundreds of laps around a designated track. Enduro racing involves stock-based cars that have had their interior and side or rear windows removed but are mostly stock mechanically. A driver is disqualified if the post-race inspection finds that his/her auto has had major racing enhancements. This type of race is often

divided into two classes: bigcar and small-car. Big-car races feature full-size cars with larger 6- and 8-cylinder engines, while small-car races feature mid-size to subcompact 4-cylinder makes and models. The races, which are often long ones, usually occur at the amateur level. The cars often take up most of the width of the track as they begin from a standing start. It is common for races to be hundreds of laps or more than 50 miles long.

The bouncing of cars off one another was very popular in the 1950s and remains so to this day -- especially during Fair Week. This year’s event begins at 6:30 p.m., Saturday, Aug. 16.

Twisted metal, smoke and destruction are coming to the Calhoun County Fair when the Aug. 16 Demolition Derby rolls into town. This is your best chance to safely Races rarely are canceled witness the organized chaos because of bad weather. The of multiple car crashes. race is not stopped except for an emergency or if the track is completely blocked. When an auto breaks down, the race is temporarily halted to move the driver to safety. There are three stories The car is left in its position about where the first demolion the racing surface and it tion derby was held: Islip becomes an obstacle around Raceway (Long Island, New which the remaining drivers York); Hales Corner must maneuver. With strict rules and regulations in place, the exhilarating pandemonium of the derby is very safe for the drivers, making it one of the most unique spectacles in motorsports. While rules vary from

event to event, the typical demolition derby consists of five or more drivers competing by deliberately ramming their vehicles into one another. The last driver whose vehicle is still operational is the winner.

The history of the demo derby

1958 Larry Mendelsohn, a 28-year stock car driver, noticed that the most cheering and excitement from crowds happened when cars crashed. Using this information, held the first demolition derby a few years later at Islip Raceway. The New Jersey track continued to hold demos and, beginning in 1962, was featured on ABC's Wide World of Sports almost weekly until the mid-‘70s. Within a few years, the craze swept the country, becoming a staple of nearly every county fair. Another story is that Hales Corner Raceway had demos years prior to Islip. According to legend, "Crazy Jim" Groh of Milwaukee, had a few too many cars on his dealership lot. So he got a few people to drive them as a promotion. Many locals claim that they had demos in the ‘50s but actual proof has not been found. The only evidence tracked down would be back-to-back stories on Happy Days television episodes 64, 65, 66. These episodes "Fonzie loves Pinkie Part 1, 2, 3" show demolition derbies in Milwaukee. The last account is that an

unnamed town in Ohio was a scene of road rage gone wild in the mid-’50s. Two cars collided at a busy intersection and both continued to battle it out, drawing a huge crowd to the scene. This story, however, fails to even name a town or date, and only gets some credibility

because Ohio is a Mecca for demolition derbies. All of these stories probably fall in the urban myth category. There were surely other demos held around the country during the same time period but were not officially recognized. (Source: Schutte Racing Team.)

Old Maple Grove Church to be filled with music during Fair Week The Old Maple Grove Church located on the Calhoun County Fairgrounds will be filled with music during Fair Week 2014. Originally located in Eckford Township where it was built between April 1900 and March 1901, the building was abandoned and in disrepair after a new church was built on the same property in the early 1980s. By the summer of 2006, the original structure was scheduled for demolition to make way for a parking lot. In February of that year, the congregation donated the original structure to the Calhoun County Agricultural and Industrial Society on behalf of the Old Maple Grove Church Preservation Committee. The purpose of the committee was to save

the building and relocate it to the Calhoun County Fairgrounds. Hours of fundraisers and donated labor and supplies have resulted in a successfully preserved church has added an additional venue for events at the fairground included non-denominal church services, weddings, an annual Christmas program and events during Fair Week. The church will be open during fair week. The schedule is: Sunday, Aug. 10: Church service hosted by the Maple Grove Church 6:30 p.m. Monday, Aug. 11: To Be Announced Tuesday, Aug. 12: Dennis Wintersteen and

Fair board recognizes Bud Moe The Calhoun County Fair Board recently presented the 2014 Volunteer of the Year Award to Bud Moe. Bud has been a participant, volunteer and supporter of the Calhoun County Fair for approximately 40 years. In 2004, he was named a lifetime CCAIS member. Bud volunteers numerous hours not only during fair week but also lends a helping hand throughout the year to ensure that any event occurring on the fairgrounds runs smoothly. In his early years of volunteering for the fair, Bud owned his towing service, Bud’s Wrecker Service. During that time, Bud made sure his wreckers and crews were on site for the demolition derby to tow the disabled cars off the track. He also would bring in wrecked cars for stunt car acts. Now during Fair Week, Bud uses golf carts to help mobility-impaired patrons get where they need to go. When not transporting fair visitors, he can be found delivering supplies to various vendors. For many years, Bud served as a trustee on the Calhoun County Fair Board. On a tractor (Relay for Life tram driver), on a golfcart (fair time), or on the street, Bud Moe has the

Mud racing is down and dirty Mud bogging (also known as mud racing, mud running, mud drags, or mudding) is a form of off-road motorsport popular in Canada and the United States in which the goal is to drive a vehicle through a pit of mud of a set length. Winners are determined by the distance traveled through the pit. However, if several vehicles are able to travel the

entire length, the time taken to traverse the pit will determine the winner. Typically, vehicles competing are fourwheel drives. Chuckwagon racing rides into the Calhoun County Fair Chuckwagon racing is an equestrian rodeo sport in which drivers in a chuckwagon led by a team of horses race around a track. This team event is led by a driver who commands a team of horses pulling the chuckwagon, and is supported by two or four outriders, each racing individual thoroughbred horses that follow the chuckwagon. Each race typically involves

three or four teams, and begins with the outriders "breaking camp," by tossing two tent poles (with four outriders only) and a barrel representing a camp stove into the back of their wagon before climbing in themselves and holding on for dear life as the wagon completes a figure eight around two barrels before circling a race track. The first wagon to cross

the finish line typically wins, although various time penalties are handed out for infractions such as a barrel being knocked over, a tent pole or stove is not loaded, or wagon interference. The event has become a crowd favorite at the Calhoun County Fair. This free event takes place beginning at 10 a.m. on Wednesday, Aug. 13, in the grandstand.

Calhoun County Fair is steeped in history The Calhoun County fairgrounds, located on Capital Hill, is home to Michigan's oldest fair and boasts the oldest fair building in the state, Floral Hall. The fairgrounds were founded in 1848 and feature more than 45 acres of grassy, shaded grounds and paved streets. One hundred year old oaks, beautiful landscaping a 2,400-seat grandstand, entertainment center and camping facilities help make the fairgrounds an excellent place to celebrate Michigan's oldest county fair and other exciting events. First held in 1839, the Calhoun County Fair has continued to this day as one of Michigan's foremost agricultural attractions. Between 1839 and 1847, the Fair was held in various locations throughout the county. But in 1848, the fairgrounds in Marshall became the permanent home for the Calhoun County Fair, which has been held here ever since. Floral Hall, the oldest building on the fairgrounds and the oldest fair building in the state, was constructed in 1860 in the popular octagon

style of the time. The wings were added at later dates. Designed originally for the display of flowers and farm produce, the building still plays a major role at the state's oldest county fair. One becomes the “oldest continually operating fair” in the state of Michigan by doing things people enjoy and developing an army of supportive and skilled volunteers. The “heartbeat of the Calhoun County Fair” is its volunteer force. The fair is an enormous undertaking with a physical plant with 20 different buildings to maintain and upgrade and at least 60 acres to landscape and mow. The fair board looks back with pride at all the wonderful memories attributable to the “fair history.” It also recognizes the enormous responsibly it owes the community as stewards of the present and future, generation of fair participants. Presently, the Calhoun County Fairgrounds property draws in excess of 100,000 visitors a year. Add to that the vendors, special events,

History of 4-H programs The 4-H program has touched, and in many cases shaped, the lives of thousands of Calhoun County residents. 4-H got its start nationally in 1902 in Iowa and Ohio and came to Michigan - to Muskegon and Mason counties - in 1908. Records indicate the first 4-H director in Calhoun County was Charles E. Ackley, who served on a temporary basis in 1917, again in 1918, and then on a regular basis from 1921-22. Other early temporary directors, whose stints overlapped to varying degrees, were Lucia Converse, Frank Davis, Margaret Hutty, Edith Gabriel and H. F. Herrod. William C. Boman held the position from 1922-25, E. C. Sackrider from 192528 and Ruth K. Sackrider in

1929-30. Alice Osborn Bates was director from 1931-35, prior to the arrival of B. E. Henry in 1936. Michigan's 4-H program began with boys' corn clubs. Over the next 30 years, the 4-

H movement gave rise to sheep, poultry, canning, cake baking and livestock clubs, as well. These clubs were eventually linked to the National Cooperative Extension Service system,

which was formed in 1914 under the leadership of the U. S. Department of Agriculture. To see 4-H in action, visit the 2014 Calhoun County Fair.

Stay safe, have fun on the carnival rides Selecting rides that are fun, but not too scary; riding safely; and letting the kids ride alone or not, are just a few things to think about when looking forward to the 2014 Calhoun County Fair. “Carnival rides in Michigan are held to the highest safety standards to keep riders safe while enjoying the roller coasters and water slides,” said Department of Licensing and Regulatory Affairs (LARA) Deputy Director Shelly Edgerton. “We ask riders to do their part and remember ‘safety first.’ Read and follow all of the ride rules and restrictions, and use all the safety equipment provided, because even one injury is one too many.” Edgerton emphasized that if your child is too young, too small or afraid to ride alone, either skip the ride altogether or make sure your child is accompanied by a responsible adult. Kids between the ages of seven and 12 account for nearly a

third of all ride accidents. Parents should make sure their kids understand safe ride behavior. To reduce the chance of injury for all ages and still enjoy the ride, LARA offers these tips: •Read and obey all posted rules and restrictions. •Follow all verbal instructions given by ride operators or provided by recorded announcements. •Make sure the ride is appropriate for the rider. •Pay attention to ride height/weight/medical restrictions. If you have any pre-existing medical conditions, check with your doctor before riding thrill rides. •Securely latch seat belts, shoulder harness and lap bars. Hold on to handrails; use grab bars. •Keep hands, arms, legs, and feet inside the ride at all times. Do not ride with hands in the air. Secure loose hair, clothing, and belongings. •Stay in the “locked and loaded” position for the entire ride. Never stand up on a ride. •Adults should never seat a child on their lap unless ride operators indicate it’s safe to do so. •Never ride when excessively tired or while under the influence of alcohol or drugs. •Report any unsafe behavior or conditions on a ride to

Join 4-H and be mentor for tomorrow’s leaders By Kathy Fisher 4-H Program Coordinator Calhoun County As the Calhoun County Fair kicks off next week, hundreds of county 4-H members and volunteers are headed to the fair to show off their projects and skills. While the week is the culmination of a year of hard work for some, 4-H offers many unique opportunities not seen at fair. So whether you’re a young person or an adult who has time to give as a volunteer, why not join the club? A program of Michigan State University (MSU) Extension, Michigan 4-H is the largest youth development program in the state. Each year, the program provides more than 200,000 young people with opportunities to explore new interests, gain new knowledge, enhance their expertise and discover their passion while teaching valuable life skills that prepare youth for the future. In Calhoun County, 806 youth are actively engaged in 4-H, which is open to all youth ages 5-19. Though traditionally seen as a program for youth with livestock, today 4-H has so much more to offer. As a year-round youth development program, youth will have the opportunity to be engaged in fun educational experiences that help them learn valuable life skills throughout the entire year. Opportunities for 4-H’ers include arts and crafts, sewing, food and nutrition, gardening, leadership, shooting sports, livestock and much more. No matter what kids choose, all the 4-H projects help members learn to exemplify the four H’s: head, heart, hands and health. They learn to use their head to make sound decisions, set goals and stick with them, as well as to develop practical

skills needed to lead a productive and fulfilling life. Using their heart, youth learn to act with integrity and accountability, and help others to become their best. Their hands are used to put the needs of their community before their own as they serve others and they learn about health by developing skills and knowledge to actively take care of their minds and bodies. With these skills, there is no limit to what youth can do with 4-H. Leadership opportunities within the club offer them the chance to try out skills while mentoring a younger member that is new to the group will allow members to become a teacher themselves. In addition to county programs, statewide 4-H programs, such as Exploration Days, give youth the chance to meet other 4-H’ers from around the state and experience what life on a college campus is like. Helping to make this possible for 4-H’ers in our own community and across the state are caring volunteers who give their time and talents to lend a hand, provide guidance, and answer life’s little questions along the way. In Calhoun County, more than 300 volunteers give their time each year with 176 actively involved in mentoring youth through a 4H club. Though the impact of these volunteers is great, the need for additional 4-H volunteers is mounting. With a goal of reaching 20 percent of Michigan’s youth through 4-H by the year 2020, more volunteers will be key. If you want to make an impact on the next generation, becoming a Calhoun County 4-H volunteer is one of the best ways you can do that. You don’t have to be a parent or even related to a 4H’er to get involved. Anyone can volunteer and it’s a great opportunity to make your mark on the next generation.

Devin Willis of Homer is one of the hundreds of 4H’ers who has participated in the annual Calhoun County Fair. Beginning Saturday, Aug. 9, current club members and volunteers will head to the fairgrounds to show off their projects and skills. Interested volunteers can give their time in a variety of ways: 4-H programs range from animal science to career preparation, clothing and textiles to science and technology, or performing arts to youth entrepreneurship. Whether you’ve got an hour to give, or want to make a year-long commitment, there’s a 4-H volunteer opportunity waiting for you. Lead a club, chaperone an event, offer a skills training, become a mentor, teach a workshop or whatever strikes your interest, there is no limit to the ways you can volunteer your time. Whether you want to help make 4-Hers’ dreams come true as a 4-H volunteer or join the club yourself as a 4H member, all of these experiences and more can be yours just by joining

Neighborhood Planning Councils (NPCs) are resident-based groups that serve an important and specific purpose in our community. The purpose of Neighborhood Planning Councils is to provide a forum to inform and discuss with neighborhood residents and representatives of the City staff and City Commissioners, issues and concerns of that neighborhood. Generally, the City informs the NPC of facts and potential results of pending decisions, opportunities or other changes. The NPC discusses and decides what, if any, recommendations it would like to make or strategies they would like to develop.
