Wednesday, April 16, 2014 at 5:00 pm W.K. Kellogg Auditorium, 60 West Van Buren Street, Battle Creek, MI 49037 Free and open to the public!

This special presentation kicks-off a two-week long event to introduce over 2,400 local students to this story by giving them an opportunity to visit the RISE ABOVE Traveling Exhibit. Whether our young people aspire to be leaders in business, government, their community or simply lead their lives with integrity and character, the story of the Tuskegee Airmen is an essential learning experience about Overcoming Adversity. The evening’s program will feature a keynote message by Lt. Col. Alexander Jefferson, Tuskegee Airman and member of the WWII 332 Red Tail Fighter Group, POW; Purple Heart recipient, Congressional Gold Medal recipient; Michigan Aviation Hall of Fame inductee and member of the Detroit Tuskegee Airmen Chapter. Following WWII, Lt. Col. Jefferson served as an instrument instructor at Tuskegee Army Airfield. He received his teaching certificate from Wayne State University and M.A. degree in education and taught science in the Detroit Public School System. Joining Lt. Col. Jefferson for the evening will be: Burt Lowe, Korean War Navy Veteran and liaison to the Tuskegee Airmen; T. R. Shaw, President of the Battle Creek-Kalamazoo Council Navy League of the United States; Alfonso King, Retired M.S.G. United States Air Force (member of West Bloomfield Michigan Macon-Thomas Tuskegee Airmen Chapter); as well as Dave Powell, Dean of Western Michigan University College of Aviation and Sidney Adams, Jr., a dedicated Battle Creek Civic Leader, private pilot and member of the Organization of Black Airline Professionals. Mr. Adams was co-founder of a Summer Aviation camp for area youth. He was appointed by Governors Engler and Granholm to serve on the Michigan Aeronautics Commission. Presently he serves on the Advisory Board of WMU College of Aviation.

In addition to attending this special presentation, don’t miss your chance to visit the RISE ABOVE Traveling Exhibit! Neighborhood Planning Council Updates

These meetings are all open to the public who may attend and offer suggestions about resolving certain matters of interest in the neighborhood. Any person who lives or owns property in a Council area or has demonstrable or substantial interest (i.e. works in) within the defined boundaries of the Council area may request to be considered for membership on their NPC Board. Anyone wanting to join an NPC should give his or her name to the chairperson of the Council. Attendance as a potential member is encouraged prior to recommendation by the NPC for membership. His or her name is submitted to the City Commission for official appointment.

The purpose of Neighborhood Planning Councils is to provide a forum to inform and discuss with neighborhood residents and representatives of the City staff and City Commissioners, issues and concerns of that neighborhood. Generally, the City informs the NPC of facts and potential results of pending decisions, opportunities or other changes. The NPC discusses and decides what, if any, recommendations it would like to make or strategies they would like to develop.
