LHS teachers Irene Mayfield and Michele Lamb accept Distinguished Service Awards for mentoring area youth through the Goodwill Connects summer work program.
Lakeview staff practice safe strategies for dealing with a school emergency. The district plans to have 100% of staff trained this fall.
LHS Teachers Recognized for Distinguished Service
82% of Lakeview Staff Complete Safety Training
Lakeview High School educators Michele Lamb and Irene Mayfield were honored in September for their work mentoring area youth through Goodwill Connects, a summer work program that connects high school students with local employers. Goodwill Connects coordinator and Vice President of Workforce Development Jerry Mainstone thanked the two teachers for going above and beyond to make the summer program a success. “When we were short mentors, Michele and Irene voluntarily took on the responsibility of mentoring all kids in the program. They took the time to get to know the kids and the employers and showed the kids in our community that there are adults that care for them.” Mainstone and Kenneth Bauer, President/ CEO of Goodwill Central Michigan Heartland, presented the two Lakeview teachers with distinguished service awards during the District’s September Board of Education meeting. Lamb and Mayfield served the Goodwill Connects program as career mentors, helping students build a resume, visiting job sites and evaluating students during their summer work experience. Through grant funding, Goodwill plans to expand the program to impact 750 kids across all four Battle Creek area school districts. Students will tour job facilities, learn about local career opportunities, and develop interview skills. A portion of the students will qualify for the summer employment program. Bauer commended Lamb and Mayfield’s efforts and the district’s support of the program, stating, “[Your] efforts truly helped change lives through the power of work.”
Lakeview’s Board of Education last year declared a renewed commitment to safety planning in Lakeview schools. Since that time, 82% of all Lakeview staff have participated in safety training led by the Battle Creek Police Department. “Safety is one of the pillars of our Board’s mission,” shared Lakeview Superintendent Dave Peterson. “The Board’s commitment to safety and their willingness to invest necessary time and resources have been imperative in expanding our safety efforts.” Training started last spring, following a community-wide lockdown and evacuation drill hosted at Lakeview Middle School. Lakeview teachers, secretaries, paraeducators, food service, transportation, maintenance, operations and administrative staff members have all participated in the hands-on training that provides specific strategies to help keep students and employees safe in an emergency situation. “Partnering with the Battle Creek Police Department, leveraging their knowledge and expertise in preparing our staff, has been a key part of our safety efforts,” shared Lakeview High School Assistant Principal and District Safety Coordinator Marty Pessetti. The training, developed and taught by members of the Battle Creek Police and Calhoun County Sheriff’s departments, includes lessons on identifying and reporting a threat, response tactics, and violence prevention. Lakeview plans to have 100% of staff trained by November. A number of other activities and investments have taken place in Lakeview schools over the past 18 months, including: the creation of trained safety response teams at each school, the installation of camera and buzzer systems to monitor and control access to elementary buildings, the addition of classroom security measures across the district, and annual safety audits at each district building. In the coming months, the district will work with the Calhoun County Public Health Department to establish trained Medical Emergency Response Teams (MERT) at each school. According to Pessetti, these efforts are in addition to state law which requires all districts to complete five fire drills, two tornado drills and three lockdown drills, and review a cardiac emergency plan each year. “The Board has made clear their expectation that our work around safety remains a top priority,” said Peterson. “I’ve been told that in many respects, we are ahead in our planning; but our momentum will continue.”

LHS Library Receives Exemplary Endorsement The Lakeview High School Library, under the leadership of district librarian Margaret Lincoln, has again achieved exemplary status as measured by the Library of Michigan School Libraries for 21st Century Schools (SL21) initiative. To earn this recognition, the Lakeview High School Library demonstrated its competence in three program areas: Teaching for 21st Century Learning, Building the 21st Century Learning Environment, and Leading the Way to 21st Century Learning. “Mrs. Lincoln is to be commended for her longstanding commitment to information literacy, student achievement and instructional support,” said Lakeview School District Superintendent Dave Peterson. SL21 is a voluntary management standards program that assists K-12 libraries by setting benchmarks in the areas of instruction, student achievement, technology, facility, staffing, budget, instructional materials, curriculum development, school improvement, community engagement, advocacy and additional applicable areas of instruction and engagement in the educational community. “SL21 represents the collaborative work of several dedicated task force members, including school librarians from across the state, library educators, Michigan Association for Media in Education (MAME), and the Library of Michigan,” said State Librarian Nancy Robertson. SL21 benchmarks are updated on a three year schedule so certified libraries remain at the forefront of excellent service to their students and teachers. For more information about SL21, visit http://www.michigan.gov/SL21.
Good to Know! No School on November 4, Election Day - School will not be in session on Tuesday, November 4 for Election Day! This is a safety precaution as many district buildings are used as voting sites. While we very much enjoy having visitors, it is difficult to limit access to students during public activities such as elections. Remember to vote on November 4! New Activities Link Promotes Local Activities - Check out the new activities link on the district website for information on local, student-friendly activities and events! Families will notice that fewer flyers are coming home with students; but the information is still available online and in school lobbies. Seeking Health-Minded Individuals - PEPA is a group of Lakeview staff and community members working to encourage the Lakeview community to be or become physically active. This active group is looking to grow its membership! Members meet six times a year and assist with programs such as the Annual Spring Into Action competitive run/walking event. Contact Linn Kracht (ldkracht@gmail.com) for more information.

4th graders Allen and Xander answer questions and help with sales during the grand opening of Fresh on Wheels produce stand at Riverside Elementary School.
Fresh on Wheels Opens at Riverside Elementary Riverside Elementary students and families recently celebrated the grand opening of the new Fresh on Wheels veggie stand! Fresh on Wheels is a joint effort between the school and Sprout Urban Farms to make locally grown fresh produce easily available to Riverside students and families. Students and families can shop at the stand - located in front of the school - each Thursday after school. Prior to opening the stand, Devin, Devon and Kyle from Sprout Urban Farms took time to talk to Riverside students and teach them a little about where the veggies came from, what their names were, and what they tasted like. Riverside Principal Denise Myers shared, “Many parents expressed how nice it was to have the opportunity to buy local produce and to have it right here at school. I am so excited to get fresh veggies in the hands (and tummies) of parents and kids!” Fresh on Wheels will be back and open for business every Thursday after school until the weather becomes too cold.
2014 Community Dinner Monday, October 27, 2014 5:30 p.m. – 7:00 p.m. Lakeview Middle School Cafeteria Senior citizens & retirees - join Lakeview Board members and Superintendent Dave Peterson for a delicious homestyle meal and pick-up your gold card pass for free entrance into home athletic and fine arts events.
All residents are invited to attend this free dinner.
