“I knew I needed stitches after a young horse jolted back and hit me in the face. What I didn’t know was where I’d get the best care. My biggest fear was being left with a big scar. But that all changed when I went to Bronson Battle Creek. I didn’t wait long. And everyone in that emergency department was so comforting and kind. My doctor was fantastic, too. He made me laugh when I needed it most, and my face healed up nicely. So thanks, Bronson, for making my bad day a whole lot better.” Talia Champlin, Battle Creek, Michigan, December 30, 2013

LHS Robotics Club – behind the scenes of Team 4327 By Alexandra Angelo ’14 and Marilyn Lalrindiki ’15. Photo provided by Marilyn Lalrindiki ’15. You probably think that Robotics is where people just build cool looking robots like the ones you see in mainstream images. But, in reality, it takes much more than that. Our fellow Q Branch member, Isaya Miyata [‘14], fills us in on what really goes on behindthe-scenes of Robotics and what it is all about. “The first thing we started off with was planning,“ informs Isaya. They started the day of kick-off (the Saturday before sinter break ended) and have been making revisions ever since. Isaya says, “Our plan was to go simple. Last year we overdid it and wanted to focus on being the best at one task." Their main objective was to be able to pick up and the balls provided by Aerial Assist. Building season started the first week of January, with a team of about 10 members. They worked on Mondays through Thursdays for roughly 3 hours per day and on Saturdays for 8 hours. Once building began, the team broke up into groups. This helped to bring everyone's individual and unique thinking styles to brainstorm effective ideas and designs for the robot, which eventually lead to studying other robots for ideas. Off to a rapid start, one of the groups built a robot for FRC in 3 short days to show which preliminary ideas worked and which did not. Isaya credits the company Build Blitz since the main framework was taken from them. Isaya, who was on the programming team, says, "The big objective in the programming team was vision targeting. However, we started off doing prerequisites and smaller tasks to make sure we could correlate with the mechanics team." They used the standard chassis that was provided by Andy Mark and arranged the wiring to be more organized than last year's. Isaya comments that they have made a lot of progress in the last three years, especially with so many snow days to work on the robot this year. When asked about the actual building of the robot, Isaya mentions, "it has been a challenge this year with so many new members who did not have experience. There was a lot to teach before getting started." On the bright side, although it took some time, the team's great mentors were insightful and helpful throughout the process, providing the team with new ideas to consider. It has been one heck of a long season, but things seem to be going well and the team is ready for competitions to begin! Three years in the making, the LHS Robotics Club Team 4327 continues to grow in number of participants and sponsors. Under the leadership of co-advisors and LHS science teachers John Burdette and Lindsey Keller, the group has developed a website and publishes a regular newsletter in addition to designing, building, programming and competing with the team robot. Team 4327 recently announced the expansion of Lakeview robotics to include a middle school club. The team would like to mention special thanks to their sponsors: Denso, Geislinger, Motorshop Electrical Construction Company and National Instruments. For more information on Team 4327, including a list of upcoming events (which are open to the public and great fun to watch), please visit www.qbranchrobotics.com.
Lakeview School District Librarian Margaret Lincoln in December was honored by the Board of Education as a recipient of a 2013 State Librarian’s Excellence Award for superior customer service. According to a press release from State Librarian Nancy Robertson, the Library of Michigan Foundation annually gives this statewide honor, which includes an elegant trophy and $500 in privately donated funds, to Michigan libraries. Lakeview High School Library and the Kent District Library in Kent County each received a 2013 Citation of Excellence. The Lakeview High School Library serves a student population of over 1,300. Margaret Lincoln, the library director, is a recognized leader in school librarianship statewide and nationally. Besides training high school students in information literacy, notably through her special course developed for library assistants, Lincoln also has shown exceptional commitment to facilitating learning about issues of race and diversity for both her students and the community as a whole. Lincoln has demonstrated very fruitful partnerships with classroom teachers on projects to incorporate electronic resources and online communication into the school curriculum and lesson plan. She worked with her colleague, Scott Durham, the school’s social studies teacher, to develop a blended learning project. Mr. Durham is spending
Lincoln is congratulated by Michigan State Librarian Nancy Robertson several grant-funded months abroad visiting historic landmarks in Europe and Asia. While he is traveling, the library will facilitate online interactions between him and Lakeview High School students. Lincoln said, “Lakeview High School Library is truly honored to receive a 2013 Citation of Excellence. This is also the occasion to recognize the staff, teachers, students and administrators of Lakeview Schools who have supported the need for a successful high school library media program over the past 41 years.”

Nontraditional book report catches author's attention What's better than earning an 'A' on your book report? Lakeview Middle School 7th grader Kylie Ohrt was surprised to find out earlier this year. Kylie had recently finished reading the "Hate List," by Jennifer Brown, when she was asked to complete a discovery project in her English class. Kylie described the assignment as, “A creative book review. You use art to express the plot of the story and to peak other's interest in the book.” The Hate List, according to Kylie, is about a young couple, Nick and Valerie, who are made fun of at school. Hurt and angry, the two create a list of people and things they hate. The book, Kylie said, “made me really think about bullying and how words can hurt as much as a weapon.” She chose to express her thoughts regarding the book by creating a sculpture. English teacher Sarah Kolassa described Kylie's project, which took three weeks to create, as outstanding. Kylie's father agreed with Mrs. Kolassa and sent pictures of the sculpture to author Jennifer Brown. "My dad emailed the author and sent pictures of my project, not realizing it would be a big deal," said Kylie. Shortly thereafter, Kylie was surprised to receive an autographed first edition copy of the Hate List from Brown. The author also shared Kylie's work on Facebook and Twitter. "You are an amazing artist. Keep being creative, and keep adding to your love list," Brown wrote. These days, Kylie is keeping a different list. A list of people who want to read the Hate List. "After I read the book, my mom and dad read it, and Kelsey. Now, there is a whole list of 10 to 15 people who want to read the book!”
Several years ago, the Lakeview Schools Educational Foundation (LSEF) was formed by a group of district supporters. Their goal was to further the education of Lakeview graduates and to assist Lakeview educators in the pursuit of teaching excellence. Today, LSEF is an accomplished foundation, with total assets of $889,986 reported at the end of last year. LSEF funds are administered by the Battle Creek Community Foundation and donations are eligible for the maximum tax deduction allowed under federal law. Last year, $46,460 was awarded in scholarships to graduating Lakeview High School seniors. Another $3,189 was given to Lakeview teachers to further their teaching skills and enhance the education of their students. Scholarship applications for seniors and also for middle school sports camps can be found on the Lakeview School District website (www.lakeviewspartans.org) under the LSEF tab. Contributions to LSEF may be made through the website or can be sent to LSEF (specify fund name) at 15 Arbor Street, Battle Creek, MI 49015. Your continued support of this Foundation will help enrich the education of the citizens of tomorrow.
Minges Brook students share their artwork with the world! Minges Brook Elementary School students join thousands of students from over 130 countries whose artwork is showcased on Artsonia, the world's largest online kid's art museum -- to display the students' artwork. "This program is a wonderful way to get parents and family members more involved in Art Education," said Minges Brook art teacher Nicole Kamidoi. Student artwork is viewable online at www.artsonia.com. Artsonia provides several online features such as fan clubs and personal guestbooks, as a way for families to encourage the creativity and imaginations of their young artists. In addition, family members can purchase keepsakes imprinted with the child's artwork, with Artsonia donating 20 percent of their annual product revenue back to school art programs.
Kindergarten Round-Up and registration events Lakeview School District has scheduled Kindergarten Round-Up/registration events for students entering kindergarten in the fall. Parents should bring their child’s birth certificate, immunization records, and proof of residency. Parents may come to ANY Round-Up regardless of which Lakeview elementary school their child will attend. Destiny received a Certificate of Merit for her outstanding volunteer community service. Sumita Strander ‘14 and John Wentworth ‘14 have been named finalists in the 2014 National Merit Scholarship Program. As finalists, Sumita and John are ranked in the top 5% of all U.S. seniors who took the PSAT/NMSQT or the SAT last year. Liam Bohl ’16 was named as a finalist in the Fifty –Seventh Annual Michigan Math Prize Competition. Over 24 students from Lakeview High School participated in this scholarship exam, along with 6300 students from 149 high schools across the state. Liam is among the top 1200 students in the state who were invited to compete in the second round of exams during which he scored in the top 4% of participants. Other top scorers from Lakeview were Isaya Miyata ‘14, Nathan Cook ‘14, Kaciana Champlin ’13 (December), Mina Kukuk ‘14, Zack Perry ‘15, Kevin Smith ‘14, Anji Tong ‘14, and Kanta Yoshino ‘15. Sumita Strander ’14 has been named a candidate in the Annual U.S. Presidential Scholars Program. As a candidate, Sumita was selected from nearly 3.4 million students expected to graduate from U.S. high schools this year. Approximately 40 students are selected from each state as candidates in the annual program. Scholars are selected on the basis of superior academic and artistic achievements, leadership qualities, strong character and involvement in community and school activities. Lakeview High School’s Annual Black History Month event took place on Febraury 22 and featured a presentation honoring Lakeview Athlete Alumni Audrey Graham-Jackson, David King, Erica Mann, Jason Price, and Jennifer PriceCarruth. The event was led by LHS students with the support of graduation coach Alexis Ballard. Minges Brook Kindergarten Teacher Julie Ruger received funding for a classroom library and other reading materials through DonorsChoose.org. The project included library rugs, guided reading sets, independent leveled books, book shelves, and booktubs. The project needed funding for about $1600.00. The project was fully funded by the LaBerteaux family. Lakeview High School Assistant Principal Darin Schmidt has been appointed as the Music Team Lead in assessment item development for the Michigan Model Arts Education Instruction and Assessment (MAEIA) Program. This program is working under the authority of the Michigan Assessment Consortium and the Michigan Department of Education to support educators and the public in implementing a high quality arts education program throughout Michigan. Lakeview School District has been named to the College Board AP District Honor Roll. The AP (Advanced Placement) Honor Roll recognizes districts’ efforts to increase student participation and
scores in AP level classes. Lakeview is one of 477 school districts in the United States and Canada to receive this annual honor. Michigan School Business Officials (MSBO) recently recognized Lakeview Pupil Accounting Specialist Beckie Reed for fulfilling certification requirements under the MSBO Pupil Accounting Specialist Certification Program. This accomplishment represents the highest degree of professional and academic preparation as established by the MSBO Board of Directors. Reed joined Lakeview’s Central Office staff in the summer of 2013 and is responsible for maintaining the district’s pupil accounting records and monitoring compliance with the School Aid Act, the Michigan Pupil Accounting Manual, and Attorney General opinions. Riverside Elementary School has been named an official site school for Miller College and has welcomed seven pre-intern and one intern teacher this year. The Miller College students will serve 20-50 hours in the school under the supervision of a classroom teacher. District Fine Arts staff, Paula Champion and Jeff Cachero were invited to present at the Michigan Music Educators Conference. Miss Champion, who teaches music at Prairieview and Riverside, presented for the second time on connecting the teaching of folksongs to Common Core Standards. Mr. Cachero, who teaches vocal music at Lakeview Middle School, presented on using iPads to enhance music instruction.

5th graders “coast” through science project It was a challenging week for 5th grade students in Colleen Parnell’s science class. Following a unit on forces and motion, they received the final assignment: Apply what you’ve learned to construct a working roller coaster. Armed with their newly gained knowledge of forces and motion, some cardstock paper and a marble, students broke into teams to discuss the issues at hand. What will it take to get the coaster (aka the marble) moving? What will change the coasters direction as it travels around the paper track? How in the world can we get a marble to follow a loop without falling or to stop without crashing? Mrs. Parnell was extremely pleased when, five days later, her classroom was home to seven working roller coasters. She said, “The students had so much fun and handled the assignment so well. It took them over a week to complete and the coasters all worked when they were finished.”
Spreading holiday cheer Each year, Lakeview staff and students eagerly share the holiday spirit by collecting gifts, food, household supplies, and clothing for families in need. Pictured, the Kalamazoo College women's basketball team joined Prairieview students in Mrs. Barron's and Miss Grosteffon's classes to wrap over 100 gifts for local families. Prairieview staff and students also collected and distributed over 2,000 canned goods and personal care items this past holiday season.

Mystery abounds each Friday in Amy Hughes’ 2nd grade classroom as students eagerly await the arrival of a special guest. The weekly reading event, which has been in place all year, is no longer a surprise for the students; however, the identity of their special guest and the book they will read still brings much anticipation. Mrs. Hughes arranges for a new Mystery Reader to visit her classroom each week. Students remain eager to find out who will visit their classroom and what new book they will bring for students to enjoy. So far this year, students have welcomed to their classroom teachers from Minges Brook and Lakeview High School, the school nurse, district administrators, a grandparent and four students from Calhoun Community High School. Each guest brings along a book of their choice – either a personal favorite or one covering a subject matter the students are currently studying – to read aloud to the class. Mrs. Hughes uses the volunteer readers to help expose students to a variety of texts and readers from many different backgrounds while promoting a lifelong love of reading. And surely, every 2nd grader looks forward to a good mystery!
