“I knew I needed stitches after a young horse jolted back and hit me in the face. What I didn’t know was where I’d get the best care. My biggest fear was being left with a big scar. But that all changed when I went to Bronson Battle Creek. I didn’t wait long. And everyone in that emergency department was so comforting and kind. My doctor was fantastic, too. He made me laugh when I needed it most, and my face healed up nicely. So thanks, Bronson, for making my bad day a whole lot better.” Talia Champlin, Battle Creek, Michigan, December 30, 2013

Battle Creek, Mich. – “Woman’s Co-op is about women helping women. In many ways, it’s as simple as that.â€? In many ways it is – and much more. The Co-op began as a grassroots effort in 2005 and has since transitioned to an organization that focuses on improving the lives of women in many ways through education, management skills and employment opportunities. Serving women and their families who have little or no income, the Woman’s Co-op takes a holistic approach to giving ZRPHQ VNLOOV FRQÂżGHQFH DQG D QHZ outlook on life. As those who receive support move forward, they in turn help others coming into the program. Over 300 families are currently part of the member service network with the Co-op serving as many as 160 families at a time.
To help support the request for aid to continue the work of the Co-op’s member service community, OMNI Gives Back awarded the organization with a $3,000 grant. “Like Mr. Parsons and OMNI we believe in the value of being a community, of working together for the good of all. We are thrilled to include OMNI as a community partner in the mission of Woman’s Co-op.â€? Teresa Phillips, Executive Director for Woman’s Co-op stated. Lakeview partners with Educatius to bring in International Students In the fall of 2014, the student body at Lakeview High School may look a little different. The district is planning on enrolling up to forty students from all over the world through Educatius International. The district is excited to open its doors to international students and the opportunity for Lakeview students to sit next to students from areas such as Europe, South America, and Asia in their everyday classrooms. Educatius (http://educatius.org/) is a company that works to find host families for international students and provides the students with quality educational and cultural experiences in the United States. Many of the students wish to attend universities in the U.S. and therefore choose to study abroad during their high school career. Students are between ages 14-18 upon arrival and are required to have studied English and passed an English Proficiency test. Students arrive with their own spending money and often are able to pay their own way and accompany families on vacations such as spring break. The district and Educatius are in the process of finding and placing students with host families. The goal is to get as many students as possible placed before the end of June. All types of families are able to host international students, including families with young children, empty nesters, and single parent homes. In fact, Lakeview High School teacher Danielle Fulayter has stated that hosting a student with young children is incredibly rewarding as her girls (ages 4 and 9) really looked up to her exchange students. Host families are needed both for the whole school year, as well as to serve as temporary emergency host families as needed (usually for a 68 week period). Host families receive a $300 monthly reimbursement per hosted student to cover the cost of an additional person in the home. Families are welcome to take in more than one student as long as each student has their own bed, dresser, quiet place to study, and three meals a day. Educatius provides 24/7 support for host families and works to ensure a positive experience for both the student and the host family. The Educatius Independent Coordinators at Lakeview are Lindsey Keller and Alexis Ballard-McCleary. Both Lindsey and Alexis work at the high school and will be responsible for checking on students’ grades and checking in with host families to ensure a proper match. If interested in the opportunity to host a student, please contact Lindsey (lkeller@lakeviewspartans.org) or Alexis (aballard@lakeviewspartans.org ).
Safety Update The May 16 safety exercise at Lakeview Middle School is being conducted in partnership with the Battle Creek Police Department. Ongoing collaboration between Lakeview’s safety committee, led by Lakeview High School Assistant Principal Marty Pessetti, and the Battle Creek Police Department, represented by Emergency Services Director Mike McKenzie, has set in motion initiatives and school safety response plans which serve as models to schools and communities across the state. Locally, community collaboration continues to grow through the formation of the Battle Creek Emergency Response Consortium, a group of area agencies specially trained and committed to providing critical incident support for our community. Led by the BCPD and Calhoun County American Red Cross, this consortium of local non-profits will play a vital role in the May 16 safety exercise. Superintendent Dave Peterson last year declared a renewed commitment to safety planning in Lakeview schools. Since that time, the district’s already active safety committee has expanded to include staff members from each building, parents, community members and local law enforcement personnel. A number of other activities and investments have taken place over the past 12 months, including: the installation of camera and buzzer systems to monitor and control access to our elementary buildings, the implementation of new procedures at the middle school to make the traffic flow more efficient and safer for all students, and the addition of classroom security measures across the district. Parent and community support of these efforts has been tremendous. Parent Watch D.O.G.S. programs are now active at Riverside and Westlake elementary schools. A program will begin next fall at Lakeview Middle School. Through these programs, dads, grandfathers, uncles and community members volunteer one or more days per year to provide an additional measure of security at our buildings. The district safety committee has also expanded this year to include parent and community volunteers, staff representatives from each district building, and Battle Creek Police Department personnel. An additional 40 parent volunteers and 40 Calhoun Area Career Center Law Enforcement students will assist with the May 16 drill. Please stay tuned following the May 16 exercise for more information about the role of parents and students in a critical incident situation.
LHS Key Club members, pictured at the District Convention, organized and participated in numerous community service projects throughout the year.
LHS Key Club President Amanda Noakes and Michigan Key Club District Secretary Kelly Peng were recognized for their leadership at the annual convention.
Key Club Members Celebrate a Year of Service Members of the Lakeview High School Key Club in March joined clubs from across Michigan for the Annual District Convention in Grand Rapids. Six Lakeview club members and staff advisors Irene Mayfield and Katie Newburn spent much of the conference participating in service projects including packaging life-saving meals for families in Haiti, making blankets for children with cancer, and making cooling packs for soldiers. The group took time out to celebrate the accomplishments of LHS Key Club President Amanda Noakes and fellow LHS senior Kelly Peng who were recognized at the convention. Amanda earned first place in the Scrapbooking (Year in Review) competition for her work documenting all club activities for the year. Kelly was recognized for serving as the Michigan District Club Secretary. In this role, she helped to oversee all Michigan clubs and to plan the district convention. The friends, who have both participated in Key Club for the past four years, agreed that their favorite club project was the Teddy Bears for Cancer fundraiser, which resulted in the purchase and donation of 25 teddy bears to the cancer center in Battle Creek. Participating in Key Club has inspired a life-long commitment to service for both Kelly and Amanda. Amanda shared, “Once you see everyone together, all ready to serve, you realize how much you can accomplish.”

LMS Safety Drill – Friday, May 16 The Lakeview School District safety committee, in conjunction with the Battle Creek Police Department and emergency service agencies, will hold a school-wide safety drill at Lakeview Middle School on Friday, May 16. Please be aware that the drill may look very real, due to the presence of police, fire, and other emergency response personnel and vehicles. Access to the school building and parking lots will be limited between approximately 8:00 a.m. and 10:30 a.m. that morning.
Registration Day is Tuesday, Aug. 12 Registration for all Lakeview School District students, grades K-12, will take place on Tuesday, August 12, 2014. Please put this important date on your calendar now! Information on specific times for each school building will be available on the district website in June.
CORRECTION: In the May 8 newsletter, the caption,
‘The Distinguished Citizen Award was presented to Floyd Beneker of Marshall,’ was incorrectly placed with a photo of Lakeview Board Trustee Neal Vanderbilt. We regret the error and wish to congratulate Mr. Beneker for earning this highly prestigious award.
PICTURED: LHS students Taylor Church and Emily Robertson last week rallied fellow students and staff in support of the American Cancer Society. The two spent the week collecting donations and selling bracelets and t-shirts to support a mini Relay for Life cancer walk on May 9th. LHS students and staff participated in the walk which took place on the LHS gymnasium track. All proceeds went to support the American Cancer Society.
Help LHS Fight Hunger On Friday, May 16, Lakeview High School Key Club will bring together students and staff to create 10,000 meals for hungry children and their families. During this event, students will make 1,667 food packages which will create 10,000 meals! From these food packages: a third will go to our local food bank, a third will stay in the United States, and the final third will go to support relief efforts in the Philippines and Haiti. LHS Key Club members are working to raise $2,800 to pay for the cost of the ingredients and packaging. All individuals making a donation – students, staff, and community members – are invited to participate in the packaging event on Friday. Please contact Key Club advisor Irene Mayfield at imayfield@lakeviewspartans.org to make your tax deductible donation and to register for the event. LHS Key Club is hosting the event with Grand Rapids based Kids Against Hunger. Kids Against Hunger works with communities to help end hunger locally and throughout the world.

Applications can be picked up at 11775 East D. Avenue, Richland, Michigan 49083 or printed online at www.gulllakecs.org and may be returned any time before 4:00 PM on Monday, June 17th, 2014 to the office of the Superintendent, 11775 East D. Avenue, Richland Michigan 49083. Gull Lake Community Schools accepts School of Choice applications for all of the programs and buildings identified above and is TUITION FREE for students who reside in the Kalamazoo Regional Educational Service Agency or in an Intermediate School District contiguous to the Kalamazoo Regional Educational Service Agency (Allegan, Barry, Calhoun, St. Joseph, and VanBuren counties). Please be advised that Gull Lake Community Schools will be a “School of Choice” district for the 2014-15 school year. A non-resident applicant for admission to Gull Lake Community Schools under the Schools of Choice program shall not be granted or refused enrollment based on intellectual, academic, artistic, or other ability, talent, or accomplishments (lack thereof), or based on mental or physical disability. Gull Lake Community Schools will not grant or refuse enrollment based upon an applicant’s religion, race, color, national origin, sex, height, weight, marital status, athletic ability, or for any other reason or characteristic in violation of any state or federal law prohibiting discrimination in access to educational services. Applicants may also not be granted or refused enrollment based on age, except that Gull Lake Community Schools reserves the right to refuse to admit a non-resident applicant applying for a program that is not age appropriate for the applicant. Similarly, Gull Lake Community Schools may refuse to enroll or admit a non-resident applicant, if that applicant does not meet the same criteria, other than residence, that an applicant who is an educational resident of the District must meet to be accepted for enrollment in a grade, specialized, magnet, or intra-district choice school or program for which the applicant applies. Gull Lake Community Schools may also refuse to enroll a non-resident applicant if: (a) the applicant is or has been with the preceding two (2) years, suspended from another school; or (b) the applicant has at any time been expelled from another school; or (c) the applicant has at any time been convicted of a felony. Preference for enrollment will be given to nonresident applicants who reside in the same household as a pupil currently enrolled in one of the District’s programs. In the event applicants exceed current enrollment limits, a random draw system will be used to determine which pupils are permitted to enroll. In order for Gull Lake Community Schools to enroll a non-resident pupil who resides in a school district located in a contiguous intermediate school district, and who is eligible for special educational programs and services, or who is a child with disabilities (as defined under the Individuals with Disabilities Education Act, or its successor statute), Gull Lake Community Schools must have a written agreement with the applicant’s resident school district for the purpose of providing the applicant with a free appropriate public education. This written agreement must include, but is not limited to, an agreement on the responsibility for the payment of added costs of special education programs and services for the applicant. The written agreement must also address how it can be amended in the event of the significant changes in the cost or level of special education programs or services required by the applicant.
