Pre-Ramadan Stage

The Month of Sha’ban - Kickstarting Your Journey To Ramadan Knowledge for the month of Sha’ban and how to create a practical plan to get back into the habit of worshipping Allah.

1

SHA’BAN

Prophet Muhammad ( ), replied: “Sha’ban is a month between Rajab and Ramadan which is neglected by many people. And it is a month in which an account of the deeds (of human beings) is presented before the Lord of the universe, so, I wish that my deeds be presented at a time when I am in a state of fasting.” (Abu Dawood)

2

An Introduction To The Month of Sha’ban The Month of Sha’ban comes to honour the month of Ramadan If Ramadan is so important to us then why do we treat it as a last minute thing? It’s the month that gives us clarity on where we are going in life and it renews our relationship with Allah, and draws us closer to Him. It was reported by Imam Ibn Rajab in Lata`if al-Ma`arif that the Sahabah used to supplicate to Allah six months in advance of Ramadan to allow them to reach the blessed month. Why? Every single year I would think why would they do that? Why would they ask so far in advance? Close your eyes for a few minutes, take a deep breath and imagine what would life be like if Ramadan did not exist? You will find your answer.

Your deeds are presented to Allah in the month of Sha’ban There is one authentic narration which beautifully sums up the purpose of Ramadan. In the month leading up to Ramadan, the Prophet Muhammad ( ), used to fast for most of the month of Shaban except the last few days of the month. These fasts are voluntary (naafil). However voluntary acts of worship allows us to draw closer to Allah. In an authentic hadith the Prophet Muhammad ( ), said that Allah said: “My servant continues to draw near to Me with voluntary worship so that I shall love him”. (Bukhari) The month of Sha’ban is also our annual stock take of the deeds we have done in the year. In this month Allah Allah counts up all of the deeds that we have done in the year since last Sha’ban which includes last year’s Ramadan. The Prophet Muhammad ( ) fasted in the month of Sha’ban so that his deeds could be presented to Allah when he was in a state of fasting. (Abu Dawood) Close your eyes for a few minutes, take a deep breath and think about the beauty of that practice of the Prophet and why he did it.

Learn more about how to practice in the month of Sha’ban. 3

Wouldn’t you love to enter the month of Ramadan on a real high and have the effects of this beautiful month have a permanent impact on your life? Wouldn’t you love to do as many deeds as you can in Sha’ban so they can be presented to Allah? Over the page you will find a habit tracker and goals section so you can plan to spiritually charge yourself before Ramadan begins. Here is how it works: 1. Select religious habits you want to do throughout the month of Sha’ban 2. Mark down on which days of the month you want to achieve those habits whether that habit is on certain days or everyday 3. Set down your wider goals for Sha’ban below the habit tracker

Use our recommended list of religious habits below to help you: • Make up for missed fasts • Fasting on Monday & Thursday • Prayers • Morning du’as • Evening du’as • Daily shukr • Read the Qur’an • Salawat • Istighfaar • Sleep in wudhu

Stage 1

Knowledge for Your Ramadan Journey A short and powerful introduction to Ramadan. Journey through a Ramadan roadmap and recite key du’as to boost you along the way.

7

KNOWLEDGE

8

THE JOURNEY OF RAMADAN “The Journey is Ramadan. The Destination is Allah.” GOING FROM AADAH TO IBADAH Fasting in the month of Ramadan is one of the five pillars of Islam. It is a month where we connect to Allah in a meaningful way. Throughout the year we worship Allah out of habit but now we worship Allah intentionally. Ramadan came to help us to submit to Allah lovingly, abandon doing things out of habit (aadah) and worshipping Allah intentionally (ibadah).

GET THAT TAQWA TINGLING SENSATION Imagine becoming so close to Allah that you can recognise His presence through every action that you do in life? When we wake up, meet people, become stuck, or go through different feelings. Ramadan trains us to include Allah in our lives. To ensure he is placed at the top of our priority list. This is what it means to acquire Taqwa. “O you who believe! Fasting is prescribed to you as it was prescribed to those before you, so that you may attain Taqwa.” (2:183)

LAUNCH YOURSELF INTO THE YEAR AHEAD! The month of Ramadan is not like any other month; its transformational. We have been given the opportunity to have a fresh start and renew our true purpose and vision for life. Ramadan prepares us for the remaining eleven months by teaching us discipline and self-control. Think of Ramadan as a launchpad to leap from for the rest of the year!

9

KNOWLEDGE

“Your Ramadan Roadmap To Allah” RAMADAN BEGINS WITH TARAWEEH Ramadan comes with a beautiful new addition to a Muslim’s daily routine – Taraweeh. It is an awe-inspiring breathtaking scene when one sees men, women and children hurrying to the mosques. The Taraweeh prayer is one of the first acts of worship that Muslims perform when Ramadan begins. YOUR FIRST SUHOOR Waking up in the middle of the night to eat? It’s what we secretly do everyday! But in Ramadan it is special. It was narrated that Anas ibn Maalik (may Allah be pleased with him) said: The Prophet said: “Eat suhoor, for in suhoor there is blessing.” (Bukhari). FASTING BUT NOT FURIOUS! We can all get hangry at times (being hungry and angry) but fasting is not just about food. It’s about being at one with Allah and ignoring everything else in life. The first fast can be tough but In sha ‘Allah you will be fine!

“A person who has been given the opportunity to be present in this month can take this as a sign that Allah has given them another opportunity to draw closer to Him and earn His paradise, through worship, in this month.”

10

HEAL WITH THE QUR’AN “Oh mankind, there has come to you a protection from your Lord and a healing for what is in your hearts and for those who believe, a guidance and mercy.” (10:57) The Qur’an was sent to heal us, use it to aid you in Ramadan. MAKING DU’A & WISHING FROM ALLAH Ramadan is filled with times where Allah is waiting for you to ask him what you want in life. We fill our days with understanding what is important to us and asking Allah to grant us our deepest wishes. GROW CLOSE TO ALLAH THROUGH IFTAR When we break our fast, our du’as are automatically accepted if we fasted sincerely. We are also at our weakest moment during the day and are reminded of those who don’t have morsels of food and water. What a beautiful moment.

“The blessed month of Ramadan is full of golden hours, descending upon us it’s blessed moments. It summons us as Muslims, to an intense and sustained month of fasting and prayer; of worship and obedience; of devotion and discipline; all centred on the Qur’an which was sent down in this very month.”

SEEK THE NIGHT OF POWER Laylatul-Qadr is the night when the Qur’an was sent down to mankind and is better than 1,000 months of worship. The might of this night is such that its reality transcends the limits of human comprehension: “And what will make you understand what the Night of Qadr is?” (97:2) The angels themselves descend to give Salaam to the believers - what

KNOWLEDGE

GIVE FROM WHAT YOU LOVE Never will you attain righteousness until you spend [in the way of Allah] from that which you love (3:92). The Prophet said “charity is proof”, proof of our iman that is. Not only that but giving charity is of greater benefit to the one who gives it, than to the one who receives it. It is a means of purifying our wealth, increasing our faith and expressing our love for humanity and Allah. SECLUDING OURSELVES IN I’TIKAF We begin that long journey into ourselves through i’tikaf. When we seclude ourselves and strip down our lives to solely focusing on Allah. End your Ramadan with this immense act of worship!

FOUR ADHKAAR THAT OUTWEIGH MANY OTHERS. Juwayriyah (May God be pleased with her) The Prophet came out from my apartment in the morning as I was busy in performing the dawn prayer. He came back in the forenoon and found me sitting there. He said, “Are you still in the same position as I left you.” I replied in the affirmative. Thereupon the Prophet said, “I recited four words three times after I had left you. If these are to be weighed against all you have recited since morning, these will be heavier. These are:

by the number of His creation

wa midaada kalimatihi and the ink of His words 17

Subhan Allahi wa bi hamdih How perfect Allah is and I praise Him

wazinata ‘arshihi and by the weight of His throne

What to do when you can’t fast!

Mental illness is just as valid a reason not to fast as physical illness. Trust your own judgement when making the decision of whether or not to fast.

Consult a doctor if you are on medication and are considering making changes to it for Ramadan .

During your menses, when you cannot pray or read the Qur’an directly, focus on remembering Allah and other ways to build you spirituality. The prophet when traveling would sometimes fast and sometimes leave fasting. He also said that the dua of the traveler is never revoked, so use this opportunity to pour your heart into your duas. Your inability to fast is not a reflection of your faith. Allah knows what is in your heart and will reward you for your intentions, beyond what the mind can perceive! Use the below checklist for ideas Listen to the Qur’an Feed those who are fasting Make heartfelt Dua and dhikr Make sincere repentance Give in charity Be good to others Send salutations upon the Prophet

18

KNOWLEDGE

Not fasting when you are already tired or depleted either because of traveling or menstruation or perhaps due to a physical or mental ailment, is a mercy from Allah. But don’t consider this time as a vacation! Rather, consider this as a time of making dhikr (remembrance) and greater introspection into yourself and expressing gratitude for the countless blessings of Allah.

Stage 2

Reflective Exercises Before Ramadan Self-reflection and contemplation before Ramadan begins.

19

REFLECTION

20

PREPARE FOR YOUR RAMADAN JOURNEY In this section you will complete exercises that help you reflect on yourself. Self-reflection and contemplation was a practice of the Prophets, may peace be upon them, and the companions, may Allah be pleased with them. These exercises are designed to help you develop self-knowledge and gain deep insight into yourself, your heart and your soul. Being aware of where you are in life now and where you want to go will mindfully integrate what truly matters to you. In Ramadan we begin to understand who we really are and who we want to be in life and we use Ramadan as an annual launch pad to get closer to that goal.

Bismillah, do you need further help understanding these exercises? Scan the QR code and watch our explainer videos online! 21

Q1

WHAT ARE YOU GRATEFUL FOR SINCE LAST RAMADAN?

The first step in preparing for your journey of Ramadan is to write down your journey since last Ramadan and all the things you are grateful for. Being grateful is a beautiful quality to have in your outlook on life as through being grateful, Allah give us more in life (14:7). In this exercise reflect on the past year and all the events that have happened, the people you have met, the opportunities you have received, the harm you avoided and the spiritual blessings of your life. REFLECTION

I am grateful for ...

22

Q2

WHAT HAVE YOU ACHIEVED SINCE LAST RAMADAN THAT YOU ARE PROUD OF?

Sometimes we focus too much on where we want to be that we forget how far we have come in a worldly sense but also in a spiritual and emotional sense too. Every little achievement is a blessing from Allah and it helps to cultivate self-confidence and motivation. At one point you were a beginner in everything you are doing in life and it took strength, perseverance, du’as and hard work to get to where you are today. Take a moment to reflect on your achievements both worldly and spiritually since last Ramadan.

I am proud of ...

23

Q3

WHAT STRUGGLES HAVE YOU OVERCOME & WHAT STRUGGLES ARE YOU STILL DEALING WITH?

I have over come and am still dealing with ...

24

REFLECTION

This exercise is similar to the previous one however instead of achievements we would like you to focus on life challenges, set backs, and your spiritual struggles too. Often in life the struggles we face are our inner struggles from our inner self (the nafs). In this exercise write down the struggles you have overcome and how you are now a stronger and better person but also reflect on what you are still struggling with. Spiritual intelligence is when you are aware of your weaknesses and struggles so that you protect yourself from yourself.

Q4

WHAT LESSONS HAVE YOU LEARNT SINCE LAST RAMADAN?

We don’t mean school lessons or work lessons, what we mean here is life lessons. Each year SubhanAllah we discover more about the journey of life itself. With every achievement and struggle we learn something and we learn powerful wisdom that we cherish to pass on to others. Self-reflection helps us to cultivate this wisdom into our lives. Hikmah (wisdom) is a positive term often used in the Qur’an as a characteristic of those who are close to Allah. What wisdom has Allah blessed you with in the past year since last Ramadan?

I have learnt ...

25

Q5

HOW IS YOUR SPIRITUAL SELF? HOW IS YOUR RELATIONSHIP WITH ALLAH?

My relationship with Allah ...

26

REFLECTION

Our spirituality is a life force. We experience this in the month of Ramadan where we spiritually peak for the year and we experience the benefits and blessings of worshipping Allah constantly. Since last Ramadan your spiritual self may have gotten stronger or it may have been suffering. How are your feeling now? How connected are you to Allah? What is tripping you in your relationship and journey to Allah? Are you aware of Allah throughout the day? This exercise will help you to self-reflect and analyse your level of spirituality.

Q6

WHAT IS YOUR ULTIMATE DREAM? WHAT DO YOU WANT TO ACHIEVE IN LIFE?

You might be thinking, what does this have to do with Ramadan? Well Ramadan is a time where we polish our hearts and we gain spiritual insight into our true goals and dreams in life. It’s true isn’t it? How many times in Ramadan do you suddenly realise the true goals you want to achieve and what matters to you. Knowing where we want to go in life gives us hope and instills a drive to move forward and if we connect that to our relationship with Allah and our faith then it comes even loftier.

My dream ...

27

Q7

WHAT IS HOLDING YOU BACK? WHAT ARE YOUR FEARS?

The fears holding me back are ...

28

REFLECTION

Now that you’ve spent some time reflecting on the past year, where you are in life now and where you want to go. What is holding you back from progress in your journey of life and your journey to Allah? What are your mental and spiritual barriers? Are any of your beliefs holding you back? What is the root cause of your fears? In order to overcome our roadblocks we need to examine the root of the underlying issue which normally lies within ourselves. Allah says in the Qur’an: “Whatever good happens to you is from Allah; and whatever misfortune hits you is because of your own action” (4:79).

SET YOUR RAMADAN GOALS We’ve developed a simple way for you to maximise your Ramadan and achieve your goals. It’s important to set a theme for Ramadan and then goals based on that theme. This allows you to have a focus in Ramadan rather than aiming in all directions! STEP 1: SET YOUR THEME FOR RAMADAN A theme is an overall change you want to make in your life. You may have identified this change from the previous exercises already performed. What’s important is that the theme is meaningful, personal and inspirational to you! Think About What is truly important to you at the current stage of your life? What is missing from your character and knowledge? What is your biggest pain point in terms of your personal development or knowledge? STEP 2: SET GOALS BASED ON YOUR THEME What goals can you set which help you achieve your theme for this Ramadan? These goals are tangible goals you wish to achieve by the end of Ramadan. Think About What can I learn to help me achieve my theme? What can I practice to help me achieve my theme? What are the different ways I can tackle this theme? STEP 3: WRITE DOWN YOUR DAILY ACTIONS What daily actions will you take in order to complete your goals? Every goal requires a daily action each day in Ramadan in order for you to achieve it! Think About How can I break down my goal into daily actions? How long will it take me to achieve my goal? At what point in the day do I do this daily action?

SELECT A QUR’AN PLAN METHOD Ramadan is the month in which the Qur’an was revealed. Although it seems daunting to read a book of such size, reciting the Qur’an has a beautiful effect on our thoughts and feelings. We all approach the Qur’an in different ways. Select the right way for you below and stick to it.

Qur’an Plan Method

Qur’an Plan Goal

GOALS

I just have to finish reading the Qur’an In Ramadan! It is mustahab (recommended) and a sunnah to complete reading the Qur’an in Ramadan, though not obligatory. If recitation is more important than understanding for you, then focus on finishing the Qur’an throughout Ramadan through reading one Juz a day. I Want To Dedicate My Time To Reading The Qur’an & Understanding The Qur’an If you want to read the Qur’an to gain reward but also spend time in understanding what you are reading then split your Qur’an time in half into recitation and understanding. I Want To Memorise & Understand The Qur’an Select a surah in the Qur’an that you believe you can memorise and focus on reading that surah, memorising it, and spending time to understand the tafseer behind that surah.

THE NIGHT ON WHICH RAMADAN BEGINS All it takes is one moment to change the trajectory of your life. You won’t find it. It will come to you. Those moments, most often than not, come in the nights and days of Ramadan. Where all the things that didn’t make sense, eventually become things of understanding. When all the wrong turns in your life eventually become the right ones. When all the jigsaw pieces that didn’t quite fit finally begin to produce a picture. Imam Ghazali said, “Whatever is meant for you will reach you even if it is beneath two mountains”. Sometimes I think that mountain is ourself. We bury our true understanding and our true journey to God in a part of ourselves that doesn’t want to understand or make sense of it. Now that Ramadan is here on this beautiful night, we begin to see not through our eyes but through our hearts. Our spiritual sight increases through the worship of Allah. That moment starts now. On the night that Ramadan begins at Maghrib.

94

PREPARING FOR THE NIGHT OF POWER: LAYLAT AL-QADR “Allah’s Messenger (peace be upon him) used to practice I’tikaf in the last ten nights and would say: ‘Seek out Lailatul-Qadr in the (odd nights) of the last ten days of Ramadan.” (Bukhari, Muslim) “Verily! We have sent it (Quran) down in the Night of Decree (Lailatul-Qadr). And what will make you know what the Night of Decree is? The Night of Decree is better than a thousand months. Therein descend the angels and the Rooh (i.e. Gabriel) by Allah’s Permission with all Decrees, Peace! Until the appearance of dawn.” (97: 1-5)

POINTS TO CONSIDER IN THE WORSHIP PLAN

Remain in I’tikaf: The best way of catching the blessed night is to remain in I’tikaf, which both men and women can do. If you can’t manage 10 nights then do as many as you can!

Best dua of the last 10 nights: Allahumma innaka ‘afuwwun, tuhibbul-’afwa, fa’fu ‘anni (O Allah, You are Most Forgiving, and You love forgiveness; so forgive me).” (At-Tirmidhi).

Give charity: Any good act such as charity during Laylatul Qadr is rewarded like you have carried it out for over 83 years.

Making life changes: The last 10 nights of Ramadan is a time where Allah decrees everything that is going to happen in the year ahead, wouldn’t you love to ask Allah for what you want in life during this time? “Allah changes what he wills and establishes what he wills” (13:39)

Any good act such as charity during Laylatul Qadr is rewarded like you have done it for over 83 years.

95

LAYLAT AL-QADR PLAN Plan how you want to spend the last 10 nights of Ramadan and arrange your worship activities between the key prayers Maghrib, Isha, Taraweeh and Fajr.

Celebrating Eid Eid Al Fitr is the day of celebration on completing Sawm in the month of Ramadan. The festival commences on the 1st of Shawwal when the first sight of the new moon is seen in the sky. We celebrate this holy festival by thanking Allah for giving us the strength and guidance in order to pursue self control throughout the month of Ramadan. Rejoice on the day of Eid. Make the effort to do something interesting with your family and friends: get children involved, prepare fun activities and exchange gifts.

6 Naafil (Supererogatory) Fasts It is highly recommended to fast six days of the month of Shawwal, as this is a meritorious act which results in abundant reward. However, it is not required to fast six days continuously without any interruption. One can fast according to convenience any time during the month. The Prophet (Peace be upon him) is reported to have said, “Whoever fasts the month of Ramadan, and then follows it up by (fasting) six days of Shawwal, it is as though he has fasted the whole year. (Reported by Muslim)

Maintaining The Spirit Of Ramadan Ramadan is over, what do I do next? How can I feel this spiritual charge and build a habit of consistently worshipping Allah with meaning and quality in the months ahead? How do I build religious habits beyond the month of Ramadan? In this section we are going to provide you with guidance and a plan to help maintain and build your religious habits and spiritual force. Your life today is essentially the sum of your religious habits. Whether you do your prayers, take time for Allah in the morning and evening, pick up and read the Qur’an everyday and send prayers to the Prophet Muhammad, peace be upon Him. Living your life each day being conscious of Allah can increase your sustenance, success, family life, spiritual insight, career and happiness in life. Maintaining and building those religious habits after Ramadan can be challenging over time because of three reasons. 1. The first reason is because the Shaytaan is back in the picture. “[Satan] said, ‘Because You have put me in error, I will surely sit in wait for them on Your straight path. Then I will come to them from before them and from behind them and on their right and on their left, and You will not find most of them grateful [to You].’” (Qur’an, 7:16-17) 2. The second reason is because the blessings and barakah of Ramadan leave us too. Ramadan brings a special type of blessing into our daily lives which won’t exist anymore. 3. The third reason is the community spirit, whether it be in our own homes, our own communities or neighbourhood, the very fact that you are worshipping Allah with other people around you is a huge motivating factor. These three reasons should give you a hint as to what you need to do to keep your spiritual light alive after Ramadan.

POST-RAMADAN ACTION PLAN Over the page you will find a Post-Ramadan Habit Tracker and goals section. Here is how it works: • • • •

Read the guidance on this page to reflect on what you want your post-Ramadan plan to look like Select the spiritual habits you want to do post-Ramadan Mark down on which days of the week you want to achieve those habits whether that habit is on certain days or everyday Set down your wider goals for post-Ramadan below the habit tracker

GUIDANCE 1. Think About What To Avoid Islam is just as much about avoiding what not to do as it is about doing worship. Turning away from sins is also worshipping too. After Ramadan we begin to diminish our spiritual light because we actively engage in sins again. Think about what you need to avoid in order to preserve your spiritual charge. 2. Think About What Is Realistic Judge your life and judge the time you have available and determine what is realistic in religious habits you can upkeep after Ramadan. Whether it is just reading 1 page a day or fasting one day in the month it doesn’t matter. Stick to something that is achievable for you. 3. Think About What Is Flexible The reality is that your life is constantly changing in terms of your lifestyle, structure, challenges, life events and more. Have a set of religious habits that are flexible so that if you miss out your worship over a couple of days or even a week, then it is flexible enough for you to pick up on the following week.
