amazing Where to look for those WOW moments in 2022 If you’re anything like me, what you’ll have missed most about holidays are those ‘wow’ moments. Those times when you look out at stunning scenery and it takes your breath away, or you stumble upon hidden gems that make your adventures even more exciting, or the clouds break and that warm sunshine makes the landscape before you glow. They’re the moments that we all remember.

LEISURELY GRADE These are active sightseeing holidays where you will get to visit iconic city landmarks on foot, whilst outside the towns and cities you may visit wineries or take a short foray into the countryside.
GRADE Mixes active sightseeing with short city or countryside walks. Any walks will take up to 2 hours and any ascents or descents will be taken at a leisurely pace.
GRADE Easy countryside walking with plenty of breaks, normally taking up the whole day with an element of sightseeing. You are unlikely to walk more than 6 miles with gradual cumulative ascents and descents ranging from minimal to 300m.
MODERATE GRADE Full and half day walks at a moderate pace over hilly terrain. Most of these holidays also have an element of sightseeing. Half day walks will probably involve about 3 hours of walking, with full day walks having around 5 hours. Expect ascents and descents of up to 600m.
GRADE Full day walks with moderate amounts of ascent and descent. The paths are mostly good, but there may be some steep and rough ground. Walks will last up to 6 hours and could involve as much as 750m of ascent and descent. Some walks will be less demanding
Enjoy a walking holiday with a twist Everybody’s different. So, whatever you’d like to get out of your trip, you’ll find we have a special interest walking holiday to match. GARDENS & FLOWERS or those with an interest F in flora, choose from springtime meadows in Europe to formal gardens in the UK. CULTURE & HISTORY We’ll visit both well-known sites and some hidden gems of local interest, often with the insight of local guides. WILDLIFE See wild birds, mammals and reptiles up close in their natural environment. These holidays include knowledgeable local guides. MIND & BODY Combine walking with a range of enriching activities which help you seek solace and meditation in the Lake District. SKILLS Take the chance to obtain an outdoor qualification, learn map skills to navigate safely in the great outdoors and more.
GRADE Full day walks with appreciable amounts of ascent and descent. These walks are in more remote areas such as Andorra or northern Portugal. Similar to Grade 5, but with most of the walks at the upper level of ascent/descent, time and distance.
CHALLENGING GRADE Stamina is the key to these holidays. There is plenty of ascent and descent over rough and steep ground, so a steady foot and a good head for heights is advisable. 800 - 1000m of ascent and descent.
GRADE Hard mountain walking every day with long ascents, descents and scrambling. A good head for heights is essential. Distances will probably not exceed 12 miles, but ascents and descents will normally be between 1000 and 1500m.
GRADE Technical mountaineering with ice-axes, crampons, slings, ropes and karabiners where necessary. Led by qualified mountain guides. Distances will sometimes be very short, but the terrain will be very demanding. Our 2x walks, 2x leaders, 2x grades offer an easier and harder option each day. Perfect if you want to mix things up or if you and your holiday partner have different walking abilities.
TERRAIN, ALTITUDE & DISTANCE For more details of the nature and demands of the walks on individual holidays, see our Holiday Information Sheets, available on our website.

Winter walking in the German Alps
Make fresh tracks in the Swiss snowy wilderness
Bavaria is a wonderful place to visit at any time of the year, however we think that winter is extra special. Feel invigorated by the pure mountain air and enjoy long periods of fine weather with clear visibility allowing for spectacular views of snow-capped mountain peaks, fairy-tale castles and stunning scenery. The surrounding countryside is blessed with lakes varying in size, a paradise for walkers. We walk through gentle forest roads and paths magically transformed by fresh layers of snow. Our base is the delightful town of Füssen. Formed by imposing peaks and an idyllic lakeland area, it is amongst the highest towns in Bavaria at an altitude of 800m.
Situated in a high mountain valley in the Bernese Oberland, Kandersteg is a traditional Swiss village. It has many charming wooden chalets and houses, the oldest dating back to the Middle Ages. The natural landscape is magnificent! Snow-covered meadows and wooded lower slopes are surrounded by the high peaks of Blüemlisalphorn, Doldenhorn and Lohner, rising to over 3,600m. We can walk to the Oeschi forest, enchanted with beautiful snow-covered trees. Perhaps take a steady climb to the viewpoint Risetenegg, rewarding us with wonderful views of Kandersteg. This is one of our most popular winter spirit holidays.
ACCOMMODATION The Kur-und Relaxhotel Filser is a familyrun hotel located minutes from Lake Forggensee, near the centre of town and close to the iconic Neuschwanstein Castle. Surrounded by the fairy-tale Allgäu landscapes, it has a spa, gym and restaurant. Breakfasts and dinners are included and the chef is particularly proud of their wonderful Bavarian specialties.
ACCOMMODATION Surrounded by spectacular views of the mountains, the three-star Hotel Alfa Soleil is a few minutes’ walk from the centre of the beautiful alpine village of Kandersteg. In addition to a heated indoor pool and wellness area with Jacuzzi, steam room and fitness gym, the hotel has an old-style English pub with a dart board and a lounge where you can relax by an open fire.

Discover ancient historical sites, wildlife and remote walking
Experience the wild islands to the north of the Scottish mainland. The holiday begins in Orkney, with the classic harbour sounds of seagulls, yachts and fishing boats creating a sense of the surrounding sea. This remains as you uncover evidence of human habitation dating back to the beginning of time while staying in the village of Stromness. Walk to the Kitchener Memorial, Wideford Hill burial chamber, the Old Man of Hoy (subject to ferries) and much more. The second week finds you on the Shetland Isles. Based in Lerwick, the main town and capital, visit the most southerly point on the mainland at Sumburgh Head and Scalloway. You’ll also enjoy some of Scotland's most dramatic scenery from wild beaches to soaring sea cliffs, and perhaps spot puffins, seals, otters, dolphins and free-roaming Shetland ponies.
Visitors have been coming to enjoy the fantastic scenery, deserted beaches, warm hospitality and abundant wildlife on Shetland for millenia. The Vikings are perhaps the best-known arrivals and they enjoyed the islands so much, they never left! The Shetland Islands, 150 miles northeast of the UK mainland, are a beautiful place for a walking holiday. They offer wild beaches, sea cliffs and rolling moors. Exploring on foot, we'll have company with some of Britain’s most charismatic birds and animals including puffins, seals, otters, dolphins and free-roaming Shetland ponies. We are based in Lerwick, the main town and capital of Shetland. There is some beautiful coastal walking directly from the hotel door. However to see the best of Shetland, we will travel a little further afield – though everywhere we go, we are never far from the sea.
ACCOMMODATION The Lerwick Hotel is nestled on the shore of Breiwick Bay with views to the island of Bressay. Located a 10-minute walk from the town centre, it boasts modern rooms. Breakfasts and evening meals are taken in the hotel restaurant.

3, 4, 5, 6 OR 7 NIGHTS – FULL BOARD TOUR CODES 70003 / 70004 / 70005 / 70006 / 70007 The English Lake District is one of the most beautiful and dramatic walking areas in this country. A compact area of mountainsides, summits and ridges, lakes and lakeside paths. We offer a wide range of trails to suit all walking abilities. It caters for both the gentle rambler simply seeking beautiful days out alongside the lakes and on gentler valley paths as well as the energetic and adventurous high peak hiker seeking a real challenge. You’ll be walking amongst the Wainwrights, the 214 fells listed in the iconic pictorial guides to the hills and mountains of the Lake District written by the great Alfred Wainwright to document his experiences in the hills and to encourage others to discover the landscape for themselves. You’ll visit some of the more quintessential mountains but also those off the well-worn path. Peaks with intriguing names can be reached from the house and are often the more memorable experiences of the walking programme. You won’t run out of incredible walking options, magnificent views or panoramic skylines. On some dates throughout the season, we organise leisurely walks at the easier end of our holiday grades scale, whilst on other dates we focus on higher grades of walking.
4 Good food, comfortable accommodation and incredible views. 4 More walking experiences than you can shake a trekking pole at! 4 Discover the less visited Western Lakes. Magnificent Lake District scenery There are gentle strolls around the valley floor and Buttermere, Crummock Water and Loweswater, as well as more strenuous and exhilarating days on the summits and ridges of the Western Fells. You’ll get to some of the well-known places, see or ascend the famous peaks, walk the valley floors or high ridges, wander the lakesides and discover hidden tarns. All holidays are based at Hassness Country House, a welcoming and authentic lakeland retreat, from which to venture into the fells at the walking grade of your choice. We also operate festive breaks over the Christmas and New Year periods. ACCOMMODATION Located on the shores of Buttermere, Hassness Country House provides a welcoming and peaceful atmosphere for each and every guest. You can find sheep grazing and red squirrels scurrying around just outside the door. A mix of rooms are available, accommodating 19 people in total, with 7 out of 11 bedrooms having en-suite facilities. All have stunning views – whether it be of the rugged and imposing hillsides across the water, garden views or views of the lake itself. Step into one of the most famous British paintings in history Welcome to a world of water meadows, willow trees overhanging riverbanks and ducks gently paddling against the flow. If it all looks like a scene straight from a John Constable painting, that’s because it is! The centre at Flatford Mill offers accommodation in Willie Lott’s cottage, which appears in his iconic Hay Wain. Immersion in history continues with the walking programme. Among the many highlights is a visit to the picturesque and wellpreserved medieval village of Lavenham, famed for its use as a set in the Harry Potter films. The walks also go through quintessential rural Britain, taking in seascapes, open vistas and sunken paths.
ACCOMMODATION FSC Flatford Mill, the first and original field study centre set up in the UK during the 1940s, is situated in the countryside of Suffolk’s Dedham Vale. More hostel than hotel, the property offers simple accommodation. The timeless jewel of the Irish Sea Encircled by the wild Irish Sea, on the Isle of Man you are amidst sweeping coastlines, gentle rolling hills, leafy valleys and hidden coves. As a walker, you'll reach the hidden corners others may miss. From the highest peak, Snaefell, views extend over the water to the Cumbrian hills of the Lake District, Ireland’s Mountains of Mourne and the Welsh mountains of Snowdonia. Inland paths lead you through ancient woodland glens where mosses and lichens grow thick on twisted trunks and weathered rocks. Expect to come across many of the island’s curiosities on the walks. There’s the Laxey Wheel, the world’s largest working water wheel, wild wallabies, four-horned Loaghtan sheep introduced by the Vikings, horse-drawn trams and the Manx cat. Only a short journey across the Irish Sea from the UK mainland, the Isle of Man is a world away from the demands of modern living.
ACCOMMODATION A fairly new addition to the Isle of Man, the four-star Mannin Hotel in Douglas opened in 2016. It was built on the site of the original Mannin and Broadway hotels, dating back to the 1880s. The hotel has tastefully kept most of its Victorian heritage while incorporating modern features.

Explore the wilds of the west Wales coast Join us for walks along spectacular stretches of the Ceredigion and Pembroke coastal paths. Our walking will take us to pretty villages hugging the coast at the end of remote valleys running down to the sea. From our clifftop viewpoints seals, dolphins and porpoises can often be seen. Our hotel sits above the mouth of the Teifi estuary. Along the clifftop walks we pass through woods, moor and farmland. Walking south on the estuary path takes us through the ancient market town of Cardigan to St Dogmael’s Beach.
ACCOMMODATION The Gwbert Hotel stands on the banks of the River Teifi at the estuary at Gwbert-on-Sea. It offers comfortable en suite accommodation and lift access to most bedrooms. Breakfast and evening meals will be taken in the hotel’s tastefully decorated restaurant, The Flat Rock Bistro, featuring panoramic views of the Pembrokeshire National Park.
Take on the challenge of the Welsh 3000 All the peaks in Wales over 3000ft lie within Snowdonia National Park. The challenge set for the Welsh 3000 is to conquer all 14 peaks (or 15 if you include Carnedd Gwenllian) in 24 hours! It’s 26 miles from the first peak to the last and over 3000m of ascent. The record set is 4 hours, 10 minutes and 48 seconds. We break down this challenge into a more reasonable five daily segments, heading north to south and include a rest day during the week where, should you want to stretch your legs a little more, your group leader can suggest local walks, or places to visit such as Penrhyn Castle (a National Trust property) and the Slate Museum at Llanberis. Unsurprisingly for a walking programme taking in so many peaks, the views can be magnificent and there is a wonderful sense of achievement in completing such a clearly defined challenge. ACCOMMODATION FSC Rhyd-y-creuau offers simple accommodation and a convenient base for good walking. Split between different parts of the building, there are a range of room types. We offer en suite accommodation on a single or twin occupancy basis. If you book a single occupancy room, you will have ample space and often various beds as usually the room would be multi occupied. Walk amongst the highest peaks in Northern Ireland
Imagine the view from the cliffs overlooking the sea to the Mull of Kintyre. The gentle breeze and coconut scent of gorse hangs in the air. Yellow flowers dot the land, picked out by the warm rays of the sun. This is a remote and wonderful place. The hills of Antrim reach from the sea to the skyline. Traditions have remained strong in this land, and the hospitality, food and perhaps a pint of stout or tot of whiskey are all here to be savoured. The beauty of Northern Ireland’s countryside is impressive and there’s a lot to explore. Staying at a prominent seafront location on the North Antrim Coast, we’re within easy reach of the iconic hexagonal basalt pillars of the Giant’s Causeway, Dunseverick Castle perched on rocks above the sea and the Carrick-a-Rede rope bridge, originally built hundreds of years ago by salmon fishermen.
The granite outcrop of the Mournes rises from the sea up to 850m at Slieve Donard, the highest point. Covering a small area geographically, the range offers lovely walking with a chance to take in far reaching views. During the holiday we not only plan to reach Slieve Donard but also a few more peaks over 700m. We’ll walk along the Mourne Wall built by the Belfast water company. Designed to contain the water catchment area, it was completed in 1922 and remains a wellmaintained superb feat of engineering. The dry stone wall which is almost five feet high crosses 15 of the highest peaks in the area and is estimated to be 19.5 miles long. The walks are generally on good trails but there are unmarked sections and some steep ground. The views spread out in all directions rewarding the effort of the climb.
ACCOMMODATION The three-star Marine Hotel overlooks a beautiful golden beach and the picturesque marina in the town of Ballycastle. The comfortable bedrooms have tea and coffee making facilities. All meals are taken in the hotel’s restaurant which faces the seafront.
