Artist Statement
I am passionate about art. Architecture and photography are my primery to express the art. Alvar Aalto said, “Building art is a synthesis of life in materialized form. We should try to bring in under the same hat not a splintered way of thinking, but all in harmony together. My architecturual work combiines traditioal Middle Eastern architecture with the present day modern architecture style. The identity for a building is important to my design philosophy. I believe each architecture buildings in the wold has its own story, this story can be long or short. My objective in my design is to relate the design to the modern architecture with respect to the cultureal in which its built.

Mecca, the destination for millions of Muslims throughout the year, is losing its identity related to Islamic architecture. Visitors around the world arrive expecting a utopia of an Islamic city, especially when they stay in hotels, but the cultural shifts caused by the oil boom have diminished the old soul of the city. Natives who formerly lived in the central city near the Holy Mosque have chosen to relocate, away from their own culture and identity, thus inciting greed among those who wish to live outside the city. The city struggles to strike a balance between its old Islamic architecture and the modern architecture that is becoming more prominent. Residents are now directionless; they merely live in an ornate edifice without addressing its essential cultural aesthetics. This paper will investigate multiple case studies in the Middle East in order to articulate the traditional aesthetic of Middle Eastern architecture. This thesis aims to discuss how traditional Islamic architecture can be integrated with sustainability.

The main courtyard is inspired by the Cube House, The Kab’a. The main role for this courtyard is to bring natural light to the lobby. The visitors in the hotel can enjoy seeing the courtyard in the lounge, also see the fountain in the center of the courtyard. This view is from the visitor’s elevators. When they want to go to
the holy mosque they will enjoy the view of the two courtyards. By using these elements in the interior spaces it brings back the old Islamic architecture in the hotel. And now visitors can not disconnect between the identity of the holy city of Mecca.

The concept behind the design is a combination of relationship between the Islamic Geometric Art and the context of the site. By connecting the site with the most important node in the city, (The Holy Mosque) it creates a linear path, which split the mass of the building to two pieces. One for the hotel lobby and the other part is for the ballrooms and room services. This linear also creates a hallway where the public can walk and involve with old Islamic environment. The center of the site is reflected by the cube house (Ka’ba) which is the inspiration of the design.

The heart of the city is the holy mosque. The design was inspired by the cube house and reflected it in the site project by layout it in the middle of the site. There is a relationship of the site and the holy mosque which creates a linear path through the site, which start to formal the mass of the building. In the design there is a relationship between the Islamic geometrical art and the context of the site which also start to gives a clear concept in the design step.

The mosque was designed and developed by ABV company. It was the first project I had done at the firm where the project was reserved from the beginning of the idea until the working drawing. The idea of the mosque was inspired from ancient Andalusian Architecture where it was designed to both compliment and blend well with the old and modern architecture. The Alfaysaliyah Mosque is 3 stories included accommodations for Imam and library. Designing this mosque has taken seven months. All architecture documents are raised to the responsible quarters to begin execution of the project.

The project was designed by the director of ABVCompany and was developed by architects at the company. My role in this project was to redesign the circulation of function and to add the necessary services required by four-star hotels. The hotel is located in Addis Ababa, Ethiopia. It consists of four floors with 140 units. The hotel restaurant is also integrated for parties and event. There is a ball room included in the design. The hall’s capacity is 800 people as the hotel has 3 restaurants and a casino in the basement floor. It has many important and necessary services for the hotel such as an ATM center. The foundation of the hotel has been put in place and is being executed.

The main concept of our village design is to make a continuous linear park that branches out and connects all the land on our site. Within this linear park will be unobstructed lanes for pedestrians to travel from place to place as the major mode of transportation. A portion of the pedestrian walkway will be paved, covered above, and lit at night using solar-powered LEDs. It also will harvest rainwater and reuse it as a misting spray to keep it cool during hot days. This passage is designed to be pleasant to use in a variety of weather and lighting conditions. During extreme weather conditions, such as hurricanes, the community will have the option of finding safety in several storm shelters located along the same linear path.

In order to maintain a sustainable and healthy lifestyle, fuel-dependent vehicles are not allowed within the communities. Only emergency and service vehicles will be granted access to drive on the walkways in special cases. There will be two additional roads adjacent to the pedestrian path: one for self-powered golf carts and one for a solar-powered trolley bus. The trolley will run during peak times and golf carts used at all other hours for personal travel. The golf carts will be owned by the community and rented out a service to community members using both an on-demand system and various collection hubs closer to the housing.
The individual housing units are designed to be highly customizable. In this way, there will be certain prefab shapes for each style of home that on a website application can be combined in order for each client to design a home to fit their specific needs.

Site of a neighborhood
On the entry points to the village will be a more urban-feeling environment with mixed use retail and condos. The other housing will be like beads that dangle across the string of the linear park. Each of the housing arrangements that project from the linear park will group two townhouse buildings and about 6 individual houses into a small village neighborhood unit. The center of the neighborhood will include an area for community garden plots.

The project is about finding a place where artists, actors and people who involved in performance art. The concept of the project is to construct a place that follow the landscape and make it easier to build without destroy any natural resources. The theater building has been designed on the flat land in the central of the site, which gives an opportunity to make it familiar with accessibility. On the other hand, the housing is in the upper level from the theater building with the main entrance between the two building (Rehearsal Area). The main idea of the project is to build an attractive area between the two building where people will have the chance to enjoy the place and be more creative.
35 36
The design concept starts with the considering the topo of the site. By following the topo lines, it creates the main road of the site plan and rail path for pedestrian from the parking lot to the main entrance. In the design, the natural sources were very considered and did not cut-off the wild life.
The sustainability is considered well in the project, because it’s one of the most important issues of the architecture. The rehearsal roof is inaccessible and it’s big area to be empty. The right decision is to create green roof on it. One of the stories of the housing contain green roof (lower roof) and the upper roof has solar panels, the reason of making the lower roof is green is to
make the view nice for the residents. Also the upper roof has the opportunity for a nice view from the rehearsal roof. The solar panels will produce energy for the housing and it’s rotated into the south-eastern side. It will help to safe energy and produce it.
