Selected Projects

Cape Cod Beach Service Building:The program was about replacing the deteriorating beach service building at Cape Cod National Seashore. Besides other natural elements of seashore weather, shifting dunes have undermined the foundation of the current building. The whole project is designed based on my joint, or it is better to say the idea of intersecting different linear elements. This idea and the roles/limitations of the joint mostly inspired the formation of the buildings and their relationship to each other.

Garden of Mobility:

While Manresa is a historic city close to Barcelona, with easy access, it is currently not an attractive place for visitors to stay. Locals, at the same time, have forgotten the significant history, architecture, and the natural landscape. My proposal, then, is about mobility, and preserving the natural landscape, and at the same time finding a way for the city to come-back and be prepared for the third millennium. La Cueva sanctuary, the most important attraction of the city and heart of the Jesuit sect, is located in this site. However currently there is no connection between Lacova and the city. By expressing mobility and restoring and rehabilitating the natural landscape of the area, I would like to push the city’s limitations forward.Garden of Mobility expands the interchange of movements by dividing, separating, and superimposing the layers of movement (pedestrian, vehicular, and rail). Area = 97 hectares

1. Boutique Hotel

2. Contemplation Area

3. Plaza + Art Museum

Currently, visitors to the city depart after a few hours, due to lack of infrastructures and accommodations. To remedy this, I have proposed, at the top of the hill, which at the same time is the top of the garden, a small boutique hotel. The proportion of the hotel as well as its occupancy limit is small, because I did not want to disturb the local urban life and the surrounding vernacular buildings. Hotel Concept:

Section C-C/ Contemplation Area

Contemplation Area: A covered urban plaza in between two current buildings is designed. Water has the main roll in the plaza. I tried to play with human senses. People in upper level of the plaza see water; in lower level, they can even touch water. In the lowest level by hearing the sound of water, people can mediate. La Creu del Tort, worship monument, relocated to the second level of the plaza on the water. People see the reflection of it in the pool.

Reconnecting La Cova and river walk with the city.

Wall Space:

Wall Space is a continuation of a broader project, entitled “Garden of Mobility, which I have done for the previous studio. The project is about mobility, public space, and respecting the forgotten nature of the city of Manresa, Spain; it is about designing an urban space based on paths, edges, landmarks, and nodes. Wall Space tries to designing a hybrid community mostly by focusing on a node of mobility. A node for different pedestrian movements: local people, regular tourists of the city, and pilgrims. By an early windshield survey of the area I realized that although Manresa has several open spaces/plazas like other Roman-based cities of Europe, they are far from a lively European urban plaza. These open spaces are part of the forgotten landscape of the city. Therefore, an urban plaza, as a new node of the city was designed among a gallery-museum to complete the Garden of Mobility, which was basically a park, connecting the riverside to the top of the hill, with a small boutique hotel at the top.

Existing Demolished

Besides the neglected ruined structures of the site, I preserved the historic fabrics and rehabilitated the existing buildings for a new function by re-planning the interior and designing new additions. I reused two of the existing old structures of the site as part of my museum. The proposed gallery/museum will help the hybrid community that I designed. It could also be served as home of the Fira MediterrĂ nia, a performing art market held each year in Manresa.

Museum Circulation Museum exhibition space Existing wall Vertical connection Plaza

Wall Space has been shaped from interconnection between two concepts: one, based on the open space/plaza, and the other one based on the retaining walls necessary for constructing on this hillside. To provide a better plaza, I conceptually cut the ground level of the site and pushed everything up. Then tried to connect this open ground level to La Coueva, which is situated in an upper level. To be able to connect them I designed several retaining walls to cut through the hill and everything else were placed in between this walls. The spaces between the walls were used as paths, museum, gallery spaces, and other function necessary for my program.

Hanging Boxes: The imaginary project’s site is a 55’ X75’ lot bounded with 35’-high walls in Richmond, Virginia. Design’s goal was emphasizing on using natural day lighting as much as possible while the height of the surrounded walls and the site’s size was two main contrarians. Due to lack of available sunlight reach the lower levels the building is designed with a piloti level. The preliminary design concept was penetrating natural light just from the roof. This project received Autodesk 2013 Excellence in Analysis Award.

The Old Hotel of Ramsar

Mahyar Hadighi, Ramina Farajzadeh

Abstract There were many “Art Deco” and “Modern” buildings constructed during the Pahlavi dynasty (1945-1979) in Iran that have already been destroyed, most likely, because they do not appear old. Modern buildings, in general, are not considered for preservation, because they do not seem old. Reza Shah was from Northern Iran and was fond of the area and supported the construction of significant buildings such as the Grand Hotel of Ramsar, an important Art-Deco building. As a member of a group of five students from Tehran’s Azad University, we conducted the first-ever survey of the old hotel and created a complete set of drawings with material conservancy documents. Our hope has been to save this spectacular Art Deco Modern building.
