Welcome to Julian! I

t’s a fall tradition for many folks to head up to Julian for a slice of apple pie. But did you know that Julian apples were once nationally famous? In the early 1900s, local farmers began shipping their produce around the country and exhibiting in various county, state and world fairs. Julian apples took blue ribbons and first prizes at the World’s Fair in Chicago in 1893, the 1904 St. Louis Fair and the San Francisco World’s Fair of 1915. Julian apples also received top awards at the Los Angeles County fair for 22 years running. In 1907, five boxes of Julian apples were sent to Norfolk, Va., to the International Pomological Show where they won the Wilder medal — the highest award given for apples in competition with fruit from all over the U.S. and Canada. The townspeople wanted to celebrate so they held the first Apple Day on Oct. 9, 1909. Colorful displays of various varieties of apples were set up in Town Hall and the event culminated with a big party, including an all-night dance and free banquet at midnight. There were some speeches, a baseball game with Ramona, foot racing, rooster-pulling on horseback, and fancy riding tricks by individual horsemen. The first Apple Day was a great success and attracted nearly two thousand visitors. The people of Julian felt their point was proven — that they could really throw a party when they wanted to. Today, Apple Days is a two-month celebration of the apple harvest and attracts many thousands of visitors. The fall and winter months are a great time to sample our famous apple pie, plan a romantic getaway, hike Stonewall Peak, camp at the lake, browse through our unique shops, or even play in the snow. Whatever your reasons for visiting, we hope you enjoy the beautiful scenic drive up here, stay awhile, and come back often to visit us. ■

Fall in Love with Julian

utumn is the season to fall in love with Julian. Against a seasonal background of shimmering golden and red trees, you can sample justpicked (by you) apples, taste fresh-made cider, stroll along a tree-shaded path, or drop a line into Lake Cuyamaca. Fall is also a festive time when you can experience some old-fashioned fun. Festivals top the list. You’ll find one nearly every weekend, starting with the Grape Stomp Festa in September, continuing through holiday festivities around Christmas. In-between are the Apple Days Festival and Apple Pie

Contest, Julian music festivals, Music at the Marketplace in Wynola, two versions of Oktoberfest, weekend live music at restaurants, the annual Open Studios art tour, craft shows in Town Hall every weekend, and the annual production of the Julian Melodrama. The best time to see fall color is in October and early November, when oak and maple trees put on a brilliant show. The colorful scene makes you want to visit Julian-area wineries and brew pubs just to warm your heart a bit. See FAll in Love with Julian Continued on page 7

Museums Fill a Need

M

useums are gathering posts where priceless artifacts of the past are cherished and protected. Visitors learn about history, researchers expand their knowledge, and authors fill more chapters. Big or small, they hold the substance of the past for those to enjoy and to embellish history. Unfortunately, many of us don’t take the time to look back. If we learned from past frailties, we might not repeat the same mistakes in the future. The Julian Pioneer Museum, housed in a late1800s blacksmith building, is a prime example, with its 19th-century clothing, furnishings and artifacts from gold mining and American Indian life. Hundreds of photographs line the walls. A collection of handmade lace is a highlight. There are museums large and small, but regardless of size, you enjoy them because of what they can offer. And members of historical societies should be commended for the attention they give to history. Plan ahead, as the Pioneer Museum is only open Thursday through Sunday. The museum is located at 2811 Washington St. Call 760-765-0227 or visit www.julianpioneermuseum.org. n

Fall in Love with Julian A nip fills the mountain air by midNovember, letting everyone know that the winter holidays are coming up. By Thanksgiving weekend, festive lights illuminate the town and Santa makes his initial arrival — always in a fire truck — so the children, both local and visiting, can give him their Christmas lists. Brilliantly decorated shops are stocked up with goods to tantalize you.

The Julian Music Festival

I

t wouldn’t be September in Julian without this long-running festival — 44 years, to be exact. Originally a bluegrass festival, the program now includes jazz and country performers. The event is set for Sept. 21, from noon to 9 p.m., rain or shine at Menghini Winery, 1150 Julian Orchards Dr. On the schedule are exciting sets by accomplished artists, including Trails and Rails, ‘30s and ‘40s swing, early pop and three-part harmony; Natalie Gelman, a modern-day troubadour with original jazz numbers; and Prairie Sky, traditional bluegrass and old-time string music from Ireland and the Americas. New this year from 6 to 8 p.m. is “Dinner and Music Under the Stars,” catered by chef Charles Scott of Candied

Apple Pastry Company. Advance reservations for the sit-down dinner are $24 and includes festival admission. Dinner tickets at the event will be $15, if seating is available. A diverse selection of food vendors will be available for those who prefer more casual fare, including barbecue, kettle corn and ice cream. General admission festival tickets are $12 in advance, available at the Julian Chamber of Commerce and online at www.julianmusicfestival.com, or $15 at the door. Guests under 16 are free with a paid adult ticket. For information, call 760-470-0321. n

ulian has two wine regions that together hold wineries offering distinctly different tasting experiences. Wineries and wine tasting rooms in Julian are well established; most display awards that come from being in the business for many years. A new region has cropped up around Warner Springs, where winemakers are experimenting with flavors and styles. All are located off Highway

79 just north of Sunshine Summit; look for signs on both sides of the highway. Expect to taste in informal, sometimes rustic, tasting rooms staffed by the winemaker.

More than 20 years ago, Mike Menghini opened the first winery in Julian in a former packing house that’s now filled with tanks and wine barrels and a family of “watch cats.” Menghini’s wines have grown better and more interesting with each vintage. For 2013, offerings include a big Syrah with a peppery finish; a signature sweet Julian Gold — a blend of Muscat Canelli and a touch of peach nectar; and a mouth-filling Cabernet Sauvignon. What we love: fun in the winery. n —Bobbi Zane

Views and Vistas Inspire Artists

icturesque Julian draws visitors from far and wide to its pinestudded mountains, snowy peaks and lilac-covered hillsides. But the area may be an even greater inspiration to local artists, whose plein air paintings and photographs are nothing short of breathtaking. The nonprofit Julian Arts Guild has a goal of enhancing the artconsciousness of the region. As a result, it has embraced artists and their endeavors for more than 30 years, offering them a platform to display and sell their work. There are art exhibits on the walls of the Julian Library and at Rabobank, with the artwork changing every month. In addition, art and photography galleries thrive throughout the backcountry. The Guild’s popular Open Studios

Tour, Oct. 19 and 20, is the one time every year when artists open their private studios to guests. It’s the perfect opportunity to visit your favorite artists at work. Artists also participate in A Taste of Julian, April 12, 2014, showcasing their work to guests who spend the afternoon sampling delicacies from restaurants, wineries and breweries. One of the biggest shows of the year, the Spring Fine Arts Show from May 9 to 12, features a wide variety of artwork in Julian Town Hall. For both artists and visitors, there’s no doubt that inspiration is right around the next corner. For information about individual artists and Julian Arts Guild events, visit www.julianartsguild.org. n

Julian ~ Your Apple Capital

W

hen a batch of apples from Julian won the prestigious Wilder Medal in 1907, it was as if the charming country town was dubbed an apple capitol. Ranchers were quickly recognized for their hard work, and the supportive community — along with the help of town leaders — organized a variety of celebrations. Today, that tradition continues and is

referred to as Julian Apple Days. During the two months of harvest, beginning in the middle of September, the town hosts large and small events, including Oktoberfest celebrations, Mountain Rendezvous, Old Time Melodrama, wine tours, and even a shopping extravaganza where visitors at participating stores can hunt for golden apples and have the opportunity to win a prize.

“It’s a great time to visit Julian,” says Tracy Turner of the Julian Chamber of Commerce and Julian Merchants Association (JMA). In addition to scheduled events, the town will host a coloring contest, special book readings, and live entertainment throughout the season at various venues. A highlight is the two-day Apple Days Festival, Oct. 5 and 6, at Menghini Winery, located at 1150 Julian Orchards Dr., at the corner of Farmer Road and Wynola Road, approximately three miles north of Main Street. Turner describes the family-friendly event as having a variety of food, vendor booths, games and activities, as

well as a beer and wine garden, music and an opportunity for the crowd to taste apples presented by the Julian Apple Growers Association. “We hope to open the orchard gates this year so that people attending the festival will have a chance to pick apples,” she said, advising newcomers, “It’s an inexpensive outing for the entire family.” To returning guests, she says, “The food will be just as good as last year, and you already know what a relaxing, fun day it is in the country.” Learn more about Apple Days by visiting www.julianappledays.com. n

h my! It’s 1902, and the poor heroine is tied to an apple tree in the local orchard! How will the hero and his trusty sidekick foil the evil villain and save his damsel in distress? Come on down to the Julian Town Hall and hiss and boo at the villain and cheer on the hero. The Julian Triangle Club has been performing the Julian Melodrama on weekends in October for more than five decades, raising funds for their philanthropic activities. Get in the mood with an audience sing-along 15 minutes before the show, then sit back, relax and enjoy an olio of high-spirited musical numbers between acts. There will be musicians and storytellers; “temperance” ladies who sing of the evils of alcohol; cancan girls dancing their hearts out; cowboys; gentlemen; flirtatious “Floozies;” and a whole lot of fun for everyone. Performances take place Friday and Saturday evenings at 7:15 p.m., with

A New Side to Julian

Theater for Grown-ups

S

ide Street Theater, the brainchild of Kait Mushet, presents its fall season with edgy, late-night shows, mostly intended for adult audiences. Shows are staged in the space behind the Rong Branch Restaurant at 2722 Washington St., in the tradition of “black box” theater, an experimental genre that became popular in the 1970s as a way to transform any room into a performance space where new artistic productions could be explored. From Oct. 27 through Halloween, Side Street will present staged readings of ghost stories with local Julian lore. This show will be a family-friendly presentation. “Wildfire,” an original play by Joseph Gallina about the Cedar Fire, will be presented the second and third weekends in November. There will be a

reception and question-and-answer period after the Sunday matinees. This adult-themed show is not recommended for children. For ticket and show information, call 970-987-4684 or email julianside@ gmail.com. n — Ann Reilly Cole

A Bright Country Christmas

W

hile it’s estimated that a few thousand lights will adorn the live, 80-foot-tall Christmas tree in Julian this year, one thing’s for sure — the town will offer visitors and residents alike a bright country Christmas.

Photos by Carol Kinney

Kicking off the season on Nov. 30, the first Saturday after Thanksgiving, Julian Country Christmas and Tree Lighting will be presented by town leaders and local merchants. Held at Pioneer Park and beginning at 1 p.m., the all-day event will feature live performances from the music and theater communities. Tracy Turner of the Julian Chamber of Commerce and Julian Merchants Association says, “We’ll have different bands and vendors all day long, so people can start their Christmas shopping early.” Santa Claus will also make a special appearance, and Christmas carolers will stroll though the park, proclaiming the reasons for the season. At precisely at 5 p.m., the tree will

be illuminated. “We are planning to close down the street at the museum and encouraging stores to stay open late so that people visiting town will have more shopping opportunities,” says Turner, describing how the boutique shops go all out by decorating their storefronts in an oldfashioned Victorian style. While the town is reminiscent of one you’d find in a snow globe, shopkeepers offer personal attention in helping find that unique, one-of-a-kind Christmas gift. Lodges and eateries also welcome holiday visitors with hot cocoa, spiced cider and a variety of specialty dishes and desserts. Because of the cool mountain air, visitors are encouraged to dress warmly. Though no one can predict if it will be a white Christmas in Julian, it’s bound to be a bright country Christmas. Visit www.julianca.com to learn about the tree lighting and other Christmas activities. n

A Holiday Tradition

Julian Stages ‘A Christmas Carol’

I

t may be the 21st century in the mountains of Southern California, but when you walk through the doors of Julian Town Hall, you’ll instantly be transported to a city street in London. It’s 1841, Queen Victoria reigns, and the sights and sounds of Christmas delight the senses in the 10th annual production of Dickens’ classic “A Christmas Carol.” Adapted by author Don Winslow and co-directed with Kait Mushet, this year’s production marks the return of Winslow to the show after a brief hiatus. Winslow keeps tradition intact in his rendition of the timeless tale, while adding a few surprises just for fun.

beloved Tiny Tim — tell the story of one man’s redemption from “miserable old sinner” into the model of generosity and kindness. Victorian Christmas carolers and choreographed dance numbers in a British music hall style fill out the performance and bring the period to life. General admission tickets are $10, and booking early is recommended for the sell-out show, which runs for just six performances over the second and third weekends in December, with Friday and Saturday night shows and matinees on Saturdays.
