Welcome to the Friendly Town of Julian — Ruth Lepper

J

ulian is often called the “best romantic get-away” in all of Southern California. But it is so much more than that, not only to the thousands of visitors who travel up the mountain roads to this idyllic location, but to the many folks who call Julian “home.” Julian is rich in its historic treasures: home to the 1870 gold strike; once in the running for county seat; boasting the oldest continuouslyoperating hotel in Southern California, dating back to the 1890s; campgrounds galore, some celebrating opening days in the middle of last century or earlier; working gold mines; melodramas and floozies; lilacs and daffodils in bloom; and apples extraordinaire, not to mention snow days that not only

close the local schools but attract snowseekers and news media from all around Southern California. Shopping in Julian goes beyond description, with unique specialty shops offering everything from candy to candles, artwork to antiques, commemorative T-shirts to snow boots and sleds. The list goes on and on. Special occasions include such festivals as Apple Days, Julian StarFest, Gold Rush Days, Grape Stomp Festa, music events, bicycle tours, quilt shows, wildflower shows, and the Fourth of July Parade. One of the nicest remarks heard around town is about the friendliness of the folks in Julian. If they don’t know you as a friend when you first arrive, they will by the time you go back down the hill. n

The Magic of Apple Days — Tracy Rolling

E

very fall, something spectacular happens in the tiny town of Julian, and it’s known as “Apple Days.” The annual extravaganza begins in late August, when folks flock to “U-pick” orchards and participate in harvesting the tasty, sun-ripened fruit. Various orchards provide baskets for visitors to carry the produce plucked from designated trees. They charge by

the peck or pound, and townspeople pull out their recipes for culinary creations that include applesauce, apple cobbler and the ever-popular apple pie. The event is traced back to the early 1900s, when Julian apples received national recognition, and ranchers and town leaders unveiled the Apple Day concept by hosting a dinner and dance at Town Hall. Over the years, Apple Days has evolved into a See Apple Days continued on page 49

By the end of March, Julian had four stores and a dozen saloons, all established in tents. Three hundred persons resided in tents within the immediate vicinity. Another 1,100-plus were living in tents in the surrounding hills. By the summer of 1872, Julian developed from a primitive mining town to a boom town with buildings consisting of small unpainted, wood-framed structures. 6 The Guide to Julian • Issue 21 ~ Fall 2015/Winter 2016 • www.julianguide.com • 760-788-8148

ood old-fashioned family entertainment fills the bill when the 2015 Julian Melodrama is presented the first four weekends in October by the Julian Triangle Club. In this year’s comedy play, “Keeping the Doctor Away,” a villain and his sidekick come to town. Will they get away with tricking the miners out of

their gold, or will the sheriff discover their true identity and defeat their dastardly plan? Each performance begins with a rousing sing-along of old favorites. Between acts are “olio” variety performances, featuring junior cancan dancers, local talent acts, and the famous Triangle Club Chorus (aka, the Julian Floozies), who almost steal the show See Julian Melodrama continued on page 28

A Dilly of a Show

T

he annual Daffodil Show, set for March 12 and 13, 2016, is the perfect showcase for the brilliant yellow blooms Julian is famous for. The show boasts hundreds of entries. Not only do grownups share their blossoms, but school-age gardeners get in on the act, with three full tables of youth flower entries and a children’s art exhibit. Opportunity drawings and merchandise sales add to the festivities.

Daffodil planting is a labor of love for the local nonprofit Daffodil Project beautification group, which orders thousands of new bulbs for planting each year. The show is open each day at Julian Town Hall, 2129 Main St., where experts from the National Daffodil Society will be on hand to discuss daffodil varieties, judge entries and answer questions. The Sound of Music

Julian’s Hills are Filled

— Ann Reilly Cole

A

fter a day of hiking, shopping or touring the historic town of Julian, it’s time to kick back and enjoy the universal language of music. In addition to the many eateries that offer live music and openmic nights on the weekends, Julian is home to music events that draw talent from around this great nation. The Julian Music Festival has celebrated the end of summer for more than 45 years. Originally a banjo-fiddle

competition, the event now includes a mix of Western ballads and classic folk music in its lineup on Saturday, Sept. 19, from 1 to 6:30 p.m., at Menghini Winery at 1150 Julian Orchards Dr. A sampling of the performers at his year’s festival includes Abrakadabra the Latin/jazz/pop band from the 1980s, whose members have reunited to share its special brand of musical magic. Three ladies from Escondido known as The Lacemakers will perform a blend of Appalachian, Celtic and bluegrass sounds. Singer-songwriter Natalie Gelman’s soulful contemporary and timeless music has been compared to

‘Music gives a soul to the universe, wings to the mind, flight to the imagination and life to everything’ — Plato Sept. 1; singer-songwriter Melanie Delaney, acoustic guitar, Oct. 6; Cuarteto Carlos Chavez, music of Mexico and the south, Oct. 13; and singer-songwriter Joe Rathburn, positive and fun tunes on guitar, Nov. 3. Performances start at 6 p.m., and are followed by a public reception.

Concerts and barn dances are presented each April by the Julian Family Fiddle Camp, where world-class musicians perform at Camp Cedar Glen, 743 Farmer Rd. Live music may also be enjoyed every week at a number of area establishments, including Jeremy’s on the Hill, Saturday, Sunday and Monday evenings at 4354 Highway 78; Julian Station, every Sunday from 1 to 4 p.m. at 4470 Highway 78; and Wynola Pizza & Bistro, Friday and Saturday from 6 to 9 p.m. at 4355 Highway 78. Musical performers may turn up for any number of special occasions — or for no reason at all — so keep your eyes and ears open for more opportunities to appreciate music in Julian. n

ulian Country Christmas and Tree Lighting Nov. 28 is the town’s first and largest event of the season, serving as an official welcome to all that is “merry and bright.” Mid-afternoon on this very special day, musical acts and dance troupes begin entertaining guests at Julian Pioneer Museum Park on Washington Street. Carolers in Victorian costumes stroll through town, and a choir contest on Main Street is planned, with the voices of dozens of children raised in song. A living Nativity at the corner of Main and B streets provides an inspirational focal point. Businesses are decked out in holiday finery, and merchants, restaurants, bakeries and lodging establishments extend a warm

welcome to shoppers and guests. It’s the perfect opportunity to look for oneof-a-kind gifts in the unique shops. As darkness falls, excitement builds in anticipation of the lighting of the tree, which takes place shortly after 5 p.m. It’s an honor that goes to the Julian Chamber of Commerce Merchant of the Year. Santa Claus’ arrival on a fire truck adds to the fun, as youngsters happily tell him their fondest wishes. More than 1,000 people from all around San Diego and neighboring counties attend the annual festivities, which carry on rain or shine — or even snow!

Only the crab apple is native to North America. W

ynola, the little community straddling Highway 78 three miles west of Julian, is overlooked more often than not. Take another look. There are a number of reasons to stop and explore Wynola, including a quaint shopping mall, excellent restaurants, a gallery showing beautiful art, overflowing antique shops, legendary Julian apple pies, weekend entertainment, children’s activities, gold panning, and ample parking. Mystery has surrounded the history of Wynola, which was originally named Spencer Valley. The post office denied the use of that name, as there was already a Spencer post office somewhere else. Longtime resident Woody Barnes recalls, “When I was a kid, people said it was an Indian name.”

Julian historian David Lewis has another take on it. After years of research, he believes he’s found the source of Wynola’s name. Lewis credits homesteader W.A. Stickler for coming up with the name, which was taken from Lake Wynola in Pennsylvania, where Stickler originally lived. Centerpiece of this up-and-coming See Exploring Wynola continued on page 42

Apple Days Continued from page 5 seasonal celebration. “Today, Julian Apple Days is no longer a single-day event but a full two-month celebration with a variety of daily activities,” said Tracy Turner, of the Julian Chamber of Commerce Merchants Association. The Julian Apple Days Festival, set for Sept. 26 and 27, is presented at Menghini Winery and offers activities for all ages. In addition to music, vendor booths, and an assortment of food, there will be games, contests and announcements, including the coronation or Mr. and Mrs. Apple Days, as well as revealing the winners of the Julian Woman’s Club Pie Baking Contest. Diana Garrett of the Woman’s Club says the call for pies has already been posted, with judging set for Sept. 25. “We get entries from people all over Southern California,” she says,

Picture-Perfect Wedding a genuine reality. Transportation specialists, caterers, DJs and rental companies are just a few of the professionals ready to help create an unforgettable occasion. Prior to selecting a location, couples should settle on the time of year, number of guests, and a budget that will support their special day. Larger wedding parties need to consider venue capacity, and couples contemplating separating the ceremony from the reception should factor in travel time, as well as the mobility of their guests. Themed weddings offer couples a starting point and help personalize a unique union. Since Julian has been dubbed a historic location, couples can make their own mark in history if they decide to be joined in matrimony at the notable Julian Town Hall, which can accommodate up to 100 guests.

Continued from page 27

As soon as possible, couples should make arrangements to preview properties and ask important questions about decorations, dining and dance floors. They should also inquire about wedding packages, and consider the possibility of the bride or the bridal party arriving in a horse-drawn carriage. Some venues offer honeymoon suites, lodging for an entire wedding group, and special activities to keep everyone entertained, yet relaxed. Couples looking to plan the picture-perfect wedding need look no further than Julian — one of San Diego’s most romantic settings. n

now bunnies. That’s what the visitors are called who head for Julian when the weather is cold enough to bring along a sled or two. And if meteorologists are to be believed, Julian may have a very snowy season ahead. The winter months, especially on weekends in January and February, may draw as many as 1,000 visitors a day looking for the perfect hill with enough

snow for the thrill of a sled ride. Julian Chamber of Commerce fields plenty of phone calls whenever there’s a chance of snow. The No. 1 spot for sledding is Jess Martin Park. If there’s not enough snow there, it’s best to keep going higher up the mountains. The fields by Lake Cuyamaca are often good spots for sledding, and Palomar Mountain is another popular location. But there definitely are places that are off limits. Topping the list is private

property. Next is Frank Lane Park in downtown Julian. It is not open to the public, so it’s “keep out” at all times. Some local markets sell sleds, and some of the antique shops may also have them for sale. One of the main concerns facing visitors and locals during snow season is the increase in traffic. It is good to check with the California Highway Patrol (CHP) for traffic updates at http://cad. chp.ca.gov/Traffic.aspx. See Snow Bunnies continued on page 60

This occurs mainly on Sunrise Highway on the way to Mount Laguna. Drivers should park in areas wide enough for them to pull off the highway. Visitors should remember to dress warmly. golden eagle gliding through the air, a flock of wild turkeys crossing the road, or deer feeding in a meadow. The trails at the Santa Ysabel or Volcan Mountain preserves, for example, will take you through meadows and woodlands to vistas that will leave you feeling on top of the world. Bring your bike or rent one from www.julianactive. com to pedal about the backcountry. If fishing is your idea of a good time, you can take the pace down a notch and cast about in Lake Cuyamaca. Simply sitting on a bench in one of the area’s beautiful open spaces can open your mind and heart to the splendor around and within you. Even pausing to take in a sunset at the viewpoint west of Inaja Memorial Park before you head back down the hill will stir your soul. See the Guide’s Hikes and Trails listings on page 66 for information about parks and hikes in the Julian area. n

Starting the summer off right are such June events as The Dance, presented by the Sons of the American Legion; Robb Bower’s Blues Bash, bringing awardwinning music artists to town; Julian Garden Tour, supporting the elementary school Farm to School Program; Julian Gold Rush Days, presenting fun activities that put the spotlight on Julian’s gold-mining roots; and the Julian Woman’s Club Heritage Quilt Show,

which ends July 4. And speaking of July 4, don’t miss the annual Julian Fourth of July Parade at noon on Main Street! In August, Julian StarFest offers public-viewing telescopes and illuminating astronomical presentations, and Volcan Mountain Foundation’s Julian Film Festival showcases award-winning films with an environmental focus. In early September, don’t miss the Grape Stomp Festa, where guests enjoy barrels of grapes to stomp, festive music and dances, activities, vendors and wine tasting. And for one-of-a-kind works of art by area artists, the Julian Arts Guild Fall Art Show is the place to be. From music, movies and arts, to fun in the sun and under stars, Julian is the place for warm-weather fun! n
