Mountain Time — Ann Reilly Cole

N

o place in Southern California celebrates the seasons like the mountain town of Julian, where there’s time enough to take in the sights and sounds of nature and absorb California history and culture by day, and count the stars by night. Spend a day trekking trails by foot, bicycle or horseback; engage in the hunt for the perfect acquisition at one of the unique retailers; sample local wine; or explore the history of gold digging and rural life. Julian is the place to be when the autumn breeze carries the aroma of just-picked apples baking into warm pies and pastries, and the landscape radiates the colors of fall on the earth and in the sky. When the temperature drops, Julian is aglow with festive lights and decorations. The occasional gentle snowfall provides the perfect setting for a day playing in the snow or a night by a cozy fire. In Julian, there is much more to see and do than a day’s unhurried pace will allow. Travelers will find lodging options — everything from tents and cabins, to bed and breakfasts and lodges — to accommodate a multi-day vacation spending quality time in the mountains. Just a leisurely, scenic drive from San Diego or the Los Angeles area, Julian welcomes families, couples and tour groups with a place to relax and take the time to enjoy and explore the California mountains and desert lifestyle. n

Apple Days

An All-American Tradition — Tracy Rolling

A

s American as apple pie, so too is the tradition of observing Julian Apple Days. Since the early 1900s, townspeople have organized a multitude of activities for the public as a way to celebrate the apple harvest season, running from midSeptember through mid-November. Tracy Turner, chairperson of the Julian Merchants Association, says that the contemporary Apple Days includes apple picking, Old Time Melodrama performances at Julian Town Hall, wine tours, entertainment by Julian’s Doves and Desperados, and much more. Leading up to the two-day Apple Days Festival, scheduled for Oct. 4 and 5 at Menghini Winery, 1150 Julian Orchards Dr., is the Seventh Annual Pie Contest. Sponsored by the Julian Woman’s Club and Julian Chamber of Commerce, the single-day event is an opportunity for bakers across the county to showcase their talent. Contest chairperson Diana Garrett says the club arranges a panel of judges from area restaurants to critique the pies based on their appearance, crust and taste. Assigning each pie a number to give it anonymity, the judges use a point system for equality. “They do a great job and have fun!” Garrett said of the bakers, adding that

last year a kindergarten class at Spencer Valley Elementary School entered a pie. “It received honorable mention,” she said. Members of the Woman’s Club visited the classroom and passed out ribbons. Entries are due at the clubhouse, located at 2607 C St., on Oct. 3 between 10:30 a.m. and 12 p.m. They must be accompanied by a legible recipe listing each ingredient. The public is invited to attend the judging, scheduled for 1 p.m. Winners will be notified by phone and requested to appear at the Apple Festival on Sunday, where they will receive monetary prizes and ribbons. Pie entries will be available for sale during the festival. Other Apple Days Festival activities will include music, dancing, an antique tractor display, children’s games, gold panning demonstrations, and a beer and wine garden, along with a variety of food and merchandise for sale. Parking is free. Admission to the festival is $5 for adults, and free for children 12 and under. It doesn’t get much more American than spending the day in the country, eating apple pie, and listening to the sounds of music and children’s laughter during the annual Julian Apple Days Festival. See Julian Apple Days Festival at www.julianmerchants.org. Pie Contest entry forms are at www.julianwomansclub.org. n

are six scripts in rotation, each written by Bobby Morgan. “Every show is different,” says troupe president Krisie Morgan, who goes by the stage name “Gypsy Davenporte.” “Sometimes people come to all three shows. They go off and shop between them, and then come back.” The group, which started presenting reenactments in Julian in 2005, has earned awards at reenactment conventions in Nevada and Arizona, in addition to individual honors awarded to the actors. Besides Krisie Morgan, the troupe includes Bobby Morgan as “Snake;” Randy Myers as “Doc Hopkins,” a real-life saloon owner from Julian’s past; Sandy Myers as “Sadie Cashman;” “Captain” Jim Cooper, who makes his own leather garments and accessories; “Black Jack” David Moore; and Pilar Aguilar as “Si Si Chiquita.” After shows, performers mingle with the audience and pose for photos. A quilt trail is a driving route along which property owners have decorated their businesses, barns, outbuildings or residences with colorful painted wooden quilt squares viewable from the road. They are unique reflections of the area they cover.

The Julian quilt trail is the first in Southern California and only the third in the state, according to the Julian Woman’s Club, which is spearheading the effort. A number of quilt squares have been installed on Highway 78 in Julian at Wynola Pizza & Bistro, Wynola Junction Antiques and Collectibles and Wynola Flats Produce, and along Highway 79

Stacy Peyokov to Reign Over Julian — Ruth Lepper

J

ulian native Stacy Peyokov earned the coveted title of honorary mayor of this close-knit mountain community. Peyokov raised $5,769 in a fundraising contest held early in the summer of 2014, with contestants campaigning for a penny a vote. There were four men running for honorary mayor, with Peyokov slipping in toward the end as a writein candidate. An anonymous donation of $5,000 helped bring her

Stacy Peyokov

over the top. The total amount raised during the contest was $9,283.89. The money will go toward a restoration project planned for the lower level of Julian Town Hall. The last time Julian had an honorary mayor was many years ago when Ted Plueger held the title. As honorary mayor, Peyokov will serve as a goodwill ambassador for the town. Among her duties will be attending the monthly mixers for Julian Chamber of Commerce and making her presence known at other fundraising events to benefit the Town Hall’s restoration project. Her final duty will be to ride in the annual Julian Fourth of July parade in 2015. The honorary mayor contest is expected to become an annual event.

The historic Julian Town Hall turned 100 in September 2014, celebrated with a community-wide potluck dinner and dance. Another event being discussed is a shotgun wedding for the summer of 2015. Peyokov says she will be adjusting her schedule to meet the demands of her new “office.” Peyokov and her husband, Randy Peyokov, are the owners of Wynola Flats Produce. Peyokov has also been involved in her Slaughter family business, Julian Cider Mill. n

O

ne of the best ways to enjoy Julian’s picturesque landscape is to explore it on foot or by bicycle. Getting up close and personal on one of the dozens of trails in the backcountry, from the desert to the mountaintop, provides an excellent opportunity to observe the intimate details and rhythms of the natural world like no other experience. It can also help you stay fit. Go at your own pace with a self-

guided tour, or opt for one led by someone who knows the terrain. Safety first. Wear clothes appropriate to the climate and carry water to stay hydrated. If hiking alone, let someone know where you will be and when to expect your return. County parks will sometimes be closed due to weather or other concerns. Trail maps and up-to-date information about weather and park closures may be found at www.co.san-diego.ca.us/ parks/index.html.

Tours Offer a Look Back at History — Ruth Lepper

D

avid Lewis has started a new business called Historical Tours of Julian, offering visitors a firsthand look into the history of the town. The tours, in three categories, last from 60 to 90 minutes and are for small groups of two to eight people. “The tours are structured, but I give people options,” Lewis said. “These are personal tours. It’s not casual history;

The apple tree originated in Central Asia, where it still grows wild.

it’s detailed history.” All of the tours start in the Bailey family plot at Haven of Rest, also known as Julian Pioneer Cemetery. The options Lewis mentioned determine where visitors go next. “That’s where I give the history of the area before Julian got here, how Julian got started,” Lewis said. “Then I ask the people if they want to learn a little cemetery history while they are here or just go down through town. I tell people how it changed from the beginning and how it changed in my lifetime. I’m flexible, but I do have a set tour.” The tours offered are on the general history of the town, the history of the cemetery and the black history of Julian. The cemetery tour stays in the cemetery, visiting graves of local pioneers. Each one has a story to tell. In the general history, the tour

moves to Main Street across from Julian Town Hall. “That whole end of the town burned down in 1892,” Lewis related. “That pretty much cut Julian in half.” The tour on black history covers the time when the African-American population was greater in Julian than anywhere else in San Diego County. Tours are by appointment, usually on weekends. Visit www.julianhistory.com. n

day in the lives of the teacher and her students, ranging up through eighth grade. The schoolhouse was restored in 1971, and was moved to Julian. It sits on a hilltop on Fourth Street between Washington and B streets, overlooking the town. For many years, it served as a branch of San Diego County Library. When the new library was built, the schoolhouse became headquarters for the historical society. The society holds monthly meetings in the schoolhouse on the fourth Wednesday of each month, often with a speaker on topics relative to the history of Julian. There also is an annual picnic in July and a holiday dinner in December. The society is governed by a board of directors. n

Businesses are decked out in holiday finery in preparation for the ceremonial lighting of the town’s official Christmas tree, set for Nov. 29. Spotlight on Daffodils — Annette Williams

T

he annual Daffodil Show, set for March 21 and 22, 2015, is the perfect showcase for the brilliant yellow blooms Julian is famous for. Not only do grownups share their blossoms, but school-age gardeners get in on the act, with three full tables of youth flower entries and a children’s art exhibit. Daffodil planting is a labor of love for the local nonprofit Daffodil Project beautification group, which orders tens of thousands of new bulbs each year. The show is open each day at Julian Town Hall, 2129 Main St., where experts from the National Daffodil Society will be on hand to discuss daffodil varieties and answer questions. Call Julian Chamber of Commerce at 760-765-1857. n

2013 Julian Fourth of July Parade

Looking Ahead

J

ulian is the perfect getaway destination! Its charm and beauty change with the seasons, and activities gear up as spring turns into summer. Two of the last big events of spring are the Volcan Mountain Foundation’s Wild and Scenic Film Festival and Julian Gold Rush Days, an entertaining look back at Julian’s gold-mining roots, both in May. Starting the summer off right are such June events as The Dance, presented by the Sons of the American Legion; Robb Bower’s Blues Bash, bringing awardwinning music artists to town; and the Julian Woman’s Club Heritage Quilt Show, which begins in June and ends July 4. And speaking of July 4, don’t miss the annual Julian Fourth of July Parade at noon on Main Street! Summer fun continues, as Julian StarFest offers public-viewing telescopes and illuminating astronomical presentations every August. In early September, don’t miss the Grape Stomp Festa, where guests enjoy barrels of grapes to stomp, festive music and dance, activities, vendors and wine tasting. The Julian Arts Guild Fall Art Show features one-of-a-kind works of art

by area artists. From music, movies and arts, to wine tasting and stars, Julian fills the bill for warm-weather fun! n
