T
he long days of spring and summer are some of the best days to visit the mountain town of Julian. With so much to see and do in this historic setting, you’ll need every hour of daylight to enjoy it all. Then when when the sun goes down and the town gets quiet, you can relax under the night sky arrayed in starry splendor. On a clear night, you can see the Milky Way! Explore the history of the region, including Julian’s colorful past, by visiting Julian Pioneer Museum and a number of markers throughout town. Main Street in Julian is a shopper’s delight, with a variety of retailers offering distinctive merchandise you won’t find anywhere else. Julian and nearby Wynola and Santa Ysabel boast fine restaurants, shops and fun family entertainment. The older crowd can sample local wines and brews at one of the many tasting rooms that have made their home in the Julian and Warner Springs areas. For nature lovers, local parks and wildland preserves offer the perfect spot for a picnic, day hike or campout. Whether you like to explore on foot, horseback or bicycle — or be carried about in a horse and carriage — the scenery will take your breath away. Warmer weather is all about getting outdoors and enjoying the many weekend festivals. Join in the fun and stomp some grapes, watch award-winning movies, listen to world-class music or dance the night away. There’s something for everyone in this tiny community with a big heart. Julian is a picturesque drive from San Diego, Los Angeles or Orange counties, making it easy to come for the day, weekend or mid-week for a fun getaway. Accommodate yourself in style and comfort at one of the locally owned hotels or bed and breakfasts or choose a back-to-nature retreat in a rustic cabin in the woods. Whatever you prefer, you’re sure to dream of your next visit to this charming mountain town. n The Guide to Julian • Issue 20 ~ Spring/Summer 2015 • www.julianguide.com • 760-788-8148 3

Unique Shopping Opportunities Abound in Downtown Julian

E
verything from fresh cider and honey to homemade candies and fudge, from clothing to camping gear, from antique treasures to rare books await visitors to downtown Julian. The business district may only be about three blocks long, but shopping opportunities abound. Toss in half a dozen or so restaurants on Main Street, along with two grocery stores and delis, and a day in Julian is complete.
The historic Julian Drug Store is now the Miner’s Diner restaurant with an authentic old-fashioned soda fountain in one-half of the building. The other half is still called Julian Drug Store, but mainly features a huge selection of toys. Downstairs is the Candy Mine where, in addition to tempting delights, a simulated underground explosion goes off periodically. Unique souvenirs from the historic gold-mining town and its oft-proclaimed “Apple Capital of the World” reputation

Explore Local Wineries & Breweries
T
he Julian area is renowned for producing luscious grapes for winemaking. As a result, there are numerous wineries and tasting rooms located throughout the area. Many backcountry wineries are family-owned and operated venues where guests are likely to encounter the actual winemakers. Breweries have also become popular thirst-quenching spots, as visitors discover unique, locally crafted beer, hard cider and mead available at several locations. With the exploding prevalence of expert wineries and breweries, the area has quickly become the focal point for out-of-the-ordinary tasting opportunities that must not be missed. n

Celebrate Independence Day
ulian pulls out the stops to celebrate our nation’s independence, with buntings and banners, a parade down Main Street, Music in the Park, and a lip-licking barbecue. Grab your lawn chairs and an American flag and find a shady spot to stake your claim on Main Street for the community Fourth of July Parade. Hold on to your wallets, as pre-parade activities begin with a staged bank robbery by the Doves and Desperados at 2033 Main St. at 10 a.m., followed by a flyover of historic airplanes at 11. Help unfurl a giant flag on the parade route and listen to remarks by local leaders and musical presentations, including the National Anthem,
to set the stage for the flag-waving celebration. The parade kicks off at noon from the parking lot of Julian Union High School, as kids in uniforms, horseback riders, dignitaries in convertibles, mountain gypsy dancers and so much more march down Main Street to Frank Lane Park at the other end of town. After the parade, head over to the American Legion on Washington and Second streets for barbecue and dancing to live music, or to Pioneer Park at the corner of Washington and Fourth, where you can enjoy a picnic lunch and a variety of musical acts throughout the afternoon. J
ulian’s nighttime sky will set the stage for the eighth-annual Julian StarFest, presented Aug. 13 through 15 by the San Diego Astronomy Association and the community of Julian. Held at Menghini Winery, the event draws thousands from Southern California and beyond who want to gaze at the stars from Julian’s unique vantage point and distance from city lights. Telescope, accessory and astronomical software manufacturers and other exhibitors will be on-site, offering an opportunity to talk to equipment experts. But perhaps the most popular
StarFest event is the Public Star Party Saturday night, free for those who enter between 7 and 9 p.m. If you want to take advantage of everything that StarFest has to offer, a one-time fee for the whole weekend is $5 for adults, $2.50 for teens 13 to 18, and free for ages 12 and under. Guests with paid admission may participate in a drawing at 5 p.m. on Saturday and visit the vendor and swap meet areas each day. Camp sites are also available. The winery is at 1150 Julian Orchards Dr. Visit www. julianstarfest.com for schedule of events, directions, and vendor and camping information. n

Julian Pioneer Museum Displays Town’s History — Ruth Lepper
O
ne of the most visited attractions in town is the Julian Pioneer Museum, located adjacent to the small Pioneer Park, just one block off Main Street. The 1888 structure started out as a blacksmith shop owned by Joseph Treshil. It next became Peter Mayrhoffer’s brewery before returning to its original use in 1899, when once again it was a blacksmith shop. At that time, the owner was Christian Grosskopf. A full-sized replica of the Grosskopf House sits next to the museum. Furnishings depict the era that the Grosskopf family would have resided here. The house is not open but has plenty of windows for peering inside. Julian Pioneer Museum took over the main building in 1952, and today houses thousands of artifacts from Julian’s

One of the most prized possessions is a lace collection, said to be the envy of the famed Smithsonian Institution in Washington, D.C. Hundreds of photographs line the walls, depicting early-day scenes of the area as well as portraits of Julian pioneers. Many of the photos came from family albums, donated by early residents or their descendants. Also adorning the walls and high shelves are mounted animals common to

‘All Aboard’
— Ruth Lepper
For a Trip Down Memory Lane
T
he Julian Train & Gold Mine Tour at Smith Ranch offers a trip down memory lane into the late 1800s. Take a short ride in a vintage 1898
ore car into the adit of an authentic 1870 gold mine, or climb into a box car for a much longer train ride — a one-mile round trip — on the 18-inch narrowgauge railway, operated by a battery engine, that traverses around the 10acre ranch. Try your luck at gold panning, check out the Pine Creek Adventure Trail, climb onboard the USS Patriot or sign up for Pioneer Ways Adventures. There also is an opportunity to move farther back in time to the Colonial Americas and see what life was like in the 1700s, at the time of the American Revolution. Owners Lisa and Greg Smith dress in period costumes, along with other members of their family, to relate the history of the local area. They bought the ranch 25 years ago. When Greg Smith started cleaning out the entrance to the mine tunnel, he soon realized this was an adventure to be shared with

Apple Days Festival
I
t was in 1909 that the original Apple Day was organized by Julian residents who wanted to celebrate the town’s harvest of 1907, when local apples won the prestigious Wilder Medal. Today, the two-day Julian Apple Days Festival, set for Sept. 26 and 27, will carry on the tradition. The annual festival, presented by the Julian Chamber of Commerce, is famous for its activities and events, including music and dancing, children’s games and activities, an antique tractor display, gold panning demonstrations, food and merchandise vendors, a beer and wine garden, contests, apple displays, and above all, apple pie! In addition, guests look forward to the coronation of Mr. and Mrs. Apple Days. The fun takes place at Menghini

Winery, 1150 Julian Orchards Dr. The day before the festival is the Annual Pie Contest, set for Sept. 25 and sponsored by the Julian Woman’s Club and Julian Chamber. It’s an opportunity for bakers across the county to showcase their culinary talents, with cash prizes awarded to the top three bakers. Slices of the pie entries will be offered for sale at the festival. In addition to the festival, the community sets its focus on apples and the harvest season from mid-September through mid-November, with special events, promotions and U-pick apple opportunities.
