Welcome to Julian! A Message from the Board of Directors of the Julian Merchants Association

any years ago, settlers from the East who came to California by covered wagon or around the Horn brought with them cuttings and seeds of favorite flowers, among which were the lilacs from the quiet gardens of New England. Bushes of old-fashioned Eastern lilac (Syringa vulgaris) were planted in the yard of the old hotel in Julian. The bushes thrived in the mountain soil and in the complete cycle of seasons that allowed them to remain dormant from December to March. In 1924, on the occasion of the wedding of Alice and Franklin Barnes, two bushes from the garden of the Julian Hotel were transplanted to the couple’s new Manzanita Ranch at Pine Hills. Years later, in 1939, Thomas Hamilton of The Marston Company saw the lilacs in bloom at Pine Hills. He wanted to share their beauty with his fellow San Diegans and arranged to have two large baskets on display at Marston’s, a large department store down in the Gaslamp. Every spring, lilacs were trucked down from Julian to Marston’s, their lovely fragrance spreading throughout the store. In contrast to the first lilac display in 1939, subsequent displays would include up to 10,000 blooms and became an annual spring event for Marston’s — all because two little bushes from New England were planted so long ago in a Julian garden. Springtime is a great time to visit Julian, with the wildflowers, lilacs and daffodils in bloom. Visitors can explore the numerous hiking trails, fish in nearby Lake Cuyamaca, bicycle through the winding roads, camp under the pines, ride on horseback, and breathe that fresh mountain air. Whatever your reasons for visiting, we hope you enjoy the beautiful, scenic drive up here, stay a while and come back often to visit us.

From San Diego Areas: Take I-8 East to SR67 (toward Ramona). SR67 turns into SR78 in Ramona, follow to Julian, or take I-8 East to SR79 (through Cuyamaca State Park) to Julian. ■

pring and summer are an ideal time of year to make the trek to the mountain town of Julian for a slice of one of its famous fruity pies. Yet, Julian offers so much more to visitors who can spend some time getting to know this multi-seasonal playground, from its historic shopping district to its wineries and hiking trails, art galleries and music festivals, all in a pictureperfect setting.

he finest fiddlers in the nation flock to Camp Cedar Glen in the Julian countryside from April 10 to 14 to present the Julian Family Fiddle Camp, a musical immersion program for kids and adults, complete with nightly concerts and barn dances the whole family can enjoy. Wildflower Show Brings the Blooms

f spring showers bring May flowers, the Julian countryside should be bursting with color in time for the Julian Woman’s Club annual Wildflower Show, May 8 through 11. Wildflower pickers seek their blooming bounty within a 25-mile radius of town. During the show, open daily from 10 a.m. to 4 p.m. in Julian Town Hall, 2129 Main St., Woman’s Club members will be on hand to answer questions about the variety of wildflowers found in the area. The tour is self-guided and showcases specialties from unique restaurants, wineries and breweries throughout Julian and the surrounding area. Members of the Julian Arts Guild and artwork displays will be at each location, with several artists planning to work on pieces during the event. The annual event will be held Saturday, April 13. Film Festival Returns to Julian By Ruth Lepper

popular film festival is becoming an annual event in Julian after its successful run in 2012. The benefit for the Volcan Mountain Foundation will take place this year from May 17 to 19 at Julian Union High School. The event will feature 24 films from the Wild and Scenic Film Festival initially shown in Nevada City and will also include special screenings of films by local filmmakers. The festival kicks off on May 17 with a showing of “A Fierce Green Fire,” an environmental documentary covering the past 50 years from conservation to climate control. The following two days between 10 a.m. and 4 p.m., selected films will be shown in two-hour segments, preceded

by special music by live bands. Nestled in the rolling hills of Julian, Julian StarFest bids stargazers to come and enjoy a clear night sky and a celebration of the cosmos. The San Diego Astronomy Association and the town of Julian are teaming up to present the sixth annual event at Menghini Winery, 1150 Julian Orchards Dr. The event brings amateur and experienced stargazers together to listen to professional lectures, buy from an assortment of vendors and, of course, look at bright stars. Attendees may even camp out in the grassy fields that surround the winery during all three days of StarFest for only $30 for adults and $15 for kids. StarFest will run from Aug. 9 through 11. Tracy Turner, president of the Julian Merchants Association (JMA), and a team of volunteers have organized a two-day event during the first weekend in June (June 1 and 2). The event is hosted by Julian Mining

Company at 4444 Highway 78. Turner says 10 families wearing period clothing will reenact a variety of activities, including gold panning, cooking, candle making, square dancing, and even a staged gun fight. “It’s a great weekend, and we’re hoping to make it even bigger this year with more vendors and activities for visitors,” said Turner, inviting the public to learn more about this recreation of historic events at www.juliangoldrushdays.com. n

A country store, road show and quilts galore are the features in this year’s annual Heritage Quilt Show at Julian Town Hall, following the theme, “Celebrate the 4th in Historic Julian.” Julian Woman’s Club has hosted the quilt show for many years. Members will be displaying old and new quilts, and some will be for sale. A “Country Store” will be set up to sell handmade items from members of the club. In addition to the show, noted quilter Eleanor Burns will be leading a quilting workshop on June 22 at the nearby Witch Creek School.

t started 15 years ago when a group of friends and their families got together to enjoy good old-fashioned blues. The crowd has grown every year, largely by word of mouth. This year, on June 15, more than a thousand people are expected at the Julian Blues Bash. “It’s been pretty fun to watch it grow,” said Robb Bower, who is the event organizer. “We are very lucky to have so many talented musicians participate every year. People tell me all the time they look forward to coming up here, sitting in the same spot and enjoying the day with people they’ve met here. This year, I got a phone call from regulars telling me their sister is coming all the way up from Florida for the blues fest.” The theme this year is “Family Affair,” and the day truly is. Menghini Winery, located at 1150 Julian Orchards Dr., offers a laid-back atmosphere surrounded

hat’s shaped like a heart, comes in a variety of seasonal colors, and is crisp for the picking? If you guessed Julian apples, you would be correct. Once a year, the charming mountain town pauses to pay tribute to the glorious fruit dangling in orchards throughout the community. As soon as the lustrous green country leaves begin announcing autumn is on its way, residents and business owners observe the town’s tradition of organizing a variety of activities focused on the apple, the harvest and the season. Julian Merchants Association (JMA) President Tracy Turner shares how some of the events include apple picking at select orchards, an Oktoberfest, old-time melodrama, pie cooking contest, and numerous performances between the middle of September and the middle of November. During the first weekend in October, everyone is invited to attend the Apple Days Festival, complete with activities for youngsters and adults. “There are a variety of foods, vendor booths, a beer and wine garden, music, and games for the kids,” said Turner,

The festival will be held Oct. 5 and 6 at Menghini Winery, 1150 Julian Orchards Dr., at the corner of Farmer and Wynola roads, approximately three miles north of Main Street. Event hours are 9 a.m. to 5 p.m., and admission is $5 for adults, with children 12 and under, free. Parking is also free. During the festival, entries submitted to the Julian Woman’s Club for their annual pie baking contest will be announced, and baked goods will be available for sale, with the proceeds being invested back into the community by way of scholarships and other support. Place warmed apples in a large bowl then add sugar and cornstarch; mix well. Refrigerate apple mixture 5 to 10 minutes. Ingredients Meanwhile, place 1 pie crust in a shallow 6 medium apples, 9-inch pie plate, pressing crust firmly against peeled, cored, and plate. Pour apple mixture into pie crust then place thinly sliced remaining pie crust over top. Trim and pinch edges 1 cup sugar together to seal. With a knife, cut four 1-inch slits 2 teaspoons cornstarch in top of crust. 1 (15-ounce) package Increase oven temperature to 400 degrees F. refrigerated rolled Bake pie on a cookie sheet 30 to 35 minutes, or pie crusts until crust is golden. Serve warm with vanilla Directions ice cream. n Preheat oven to 325 degrees F. Place apple slices on a rimmed baking sheet and bake 10 minutes.

he oldest, still-standing adobe building in the Julian area, the Santa Ysabel General Store, should be the first stop for those who arrive in the Julian area. The old store, located at the intersection of highways 76 and 78, now houses the Backcountry Visitor Center and a small store reminiscent of the one that served pioneers more than a century ago. Guests are invited to browse in the store, which holds an array of updated versions of oldfashioned heirloom foods, seeds and bulbs, homemade pickles, jams and jellies put up by local artisans, cheese and beer-making kits, and specialty honey. However, the store also serves as a visitor center, offering information about things to do in the Julian area — especially for those who want explore

the beautiful mountains that hold the headwaters of both the San Diego and San Dieguito rivers. A small museum, the visitor center has maps to study and purchase, information for hikers and bird watchers, outdoor gear, and exhibits of local animals and plants. Operated by SOHO, San Diego’s historic preservation organization, the store and visitor center are open from 11 a.m. to 5 p.m., Friday through Sunday. Call 760-765-1270. n

Julian Loves a Parade

ulian, home of the “Greatest Little Town Parade in America,” will celebrate Independence Day this year with its rousing hometown parade. In keeping with this year’s theme, “Historic Julian Celebrates July 4th,” the parade committee has selected Richard Bailey to ride in the parade as Grand Marshal. The grandson of the town’s founder Drue Bailey, Richard helped preserve the history of the early days of the town’s founding and the gold rush era by donating family papers, records, tools and artifacts to the Julian Pioneer Museum. It all starts at 10 a.m. with a soaring pre-parade flyover by vintage World War II airplanes and features

patriotic entertainment by local performers. Expect to hear bands, singers, choruses, and other patriotic presentations, and keep an eye out for the bank robbers who always show up. The Marine Corps Color Guard steps out at noon, followed by marching bands, belly-dancing gypsies, vintage cars, Miss Julian and her court, equestrian units, Girl and Boy Scouts, a squad of antique tractors, fire engines, school kids leading goats and horses, mounted Buffalo Soldiers, and homemade floats. It pays to get an early viewing spot along the parade route as crowd counts can get as high as 10,000 people. Kids Fish Free at Fishing Derby

Preparations are under way for the 15th Annual O.P. Ball Memorial Fishing Derby, to be held at Lake Cuyamaca on Saturday, Sept. 28. Rangers are collecting cool prizes, including rods, reels, bobbers and more in hopes of inspiring roughly 400 young anglers between the ages of four and 15 to get hooked on fishing. The youngsters will be divided into

various age groups, each receiving free admission, a goody bag and a free lunch. Participants must be accompanied by their parents, who may also fish, provided they have a license. Rangers say, “No experience is necessary,” and volunteers will be on hand to assist the kids. Wine Making the Old-Fashioned Way By Marta Zarrella

very year, Julian Chamber of Commerce offers an opportunity to imagine the life of wine makers in days gone by, before the grape press was invented. It is a tradition that attracts about 2,000 people each year to the Julian Grape Stomp Festa. Two barrels — one for kids and one for adults — are filled with the fruit of the vine after the annual blessing of the grapes. “This year will be the best year yet,” said Krisie Morgan of the Julian Chamber of Commerce. “We plan a lot more fun things for the kids, including a clown, a bounce house, face painting and more.” Every year, the band Roman Holiday provides music and dancers. In the morning they play Italian music, and in the afternoon they play good old rockand-roll. People are invited to dance along while sampling wine from some of the area’s 11 participating wineries. 2 Tablespoons lemon juice 1 Sweet, crisp apple, such as Fuji or Gala 2 Teaspoons confectioners’ sugar Directions Heat oven to 200 degrees F. Line a baking sheet with parchment paper and set aside. Fill a medium bowl with ice, water, and lemon juice and set aside. Slice the apple into very thin slices and let soak in the water bath for 5 minutes. Place apple slices on prepared baking sheet, sprinkle with sugar, and bake until crisp and dry — about 90 minutes. Cool and serve. n
