M
ain Street merchants are getting ready to be visited by costumed kids as part of the Ramona Chamber of Commerce Merchants’ Safe Trick or Treat event on Friday, Oct. 30, from 3 to 6 p.m. The annual Halloween tradition has become a community favorite, bringing thousands of children and their families to storefronts along Main Street. The event gives residents an opportunity to explore local businesses, and reminds the community of the variety of retail establishments and service providers available here. Merchants are invited to dress in costume as they hand out goodies. “Each year, the event has been growing in attendance and popularity,” says Ramona Chamber Director Patrick Osio. “Merchants find it to be an excellent way to give back to the community while enjoying thousands of smiling faces, and the community that participates finds it an outstanding, safe alternative to
traditional door-to-door residential trick or treating. We encourage everyone to dress up, be involved and stay safe.” Osio knows from experience how popular the Chamber event is. He is marketing director of Ramona Disposal Service, which staffs a giveaway booth offering glow necklaces on the corner of 10th and Main. Ramona Home Journal File Photo
“Every year we hand them out, and within hours, all 3,000 of them are gone!” he says. “It’s fun to see the kids wearing them all up and down Main Street.” Ramona Disposal has been an active participant in the
Chamber event for many years, Osio says. “I’ve been with the company 14 years, and they were doing it well before I got here.” He pointed out the event’s safety record. “My children participate.
I’ve seen people come up from Poway, that’s how safe it is. Children from surrounding communities come up because it is so safe. It is a great event!” Contact Ramona Chamber of Commerce at 760-7891311. n

Have a Halloween at Haunted Town Hall By Jim Evans ~ the journal
O
nce again, the historic Ramona Town Hall will be haunted by ghosts, goblins and ghouls on Halloween. This year’s Halloween “spooktacular” will benefit Ramona Skatepark Champions. Local residents have already reported strange sightings and spooky sounds at night, including eerie visions of costumed ballroom dancers in the windows of the Main Hall. Haunted Town Hall will be officially open for scaring on Friday, Oct. 30, from 3:30 to 9 p.m., and Saturday, Oct. 31, from 5 to 9 p.m. at 729 Main St. Admission is $5 for adults and children 13 and older. Children 12 and under are free if accompanied by a paid adult. Guided tours will be scheduled every 10 minutes by local-area docents, who will add some colorful and haunting history to the experience. Prepare to be scared! In fact, parents are advised that the Haunted Town Hall is inappropriate for infants and toddlers, according to Skatepark Champions
spokesperson Dwight Webster. “It will be so scary that we don’t recommend it to anyone under 6 years of age,” says Webster. “Others should attend at their own risk,” he chuckles menacingly. In addition to the Haunted Town Hall, there will be costume contests with prizes, candy for the kids, and much more. Collaborating on the event with the Skatepark Champions is Ramona Council of Arts, Unlimited, with additional support from Ramona Town Hall, CharityZ Project, Ramona Grange 632, Ramona Realty, Ramona Kiwanis Club, Ransom Brothers True Value, and individual vendors in the Original Old Town Ramona Antique Fair, among others. Proceeds and donations will benefit the Ramona Skatepark Champions as they raise funds for the maintenance bond and building fund for the proposed skatepark, set to be located in the Ramona Intergenerational Community Campus behind Ramona Library. Visit www.ramonaskate park.org. n
Classic Car ‘Trunk or Treat’ On Oct. 30 will be a “trunk or treat” event, featuring many of the classic and muscle cars that cruised Main Street on Thursday nights through the summer. The event will be staged from 3 to 6 p.m. in the Albertsons parking lot at 1459 Main St., between Chase Bank and Bank of America. Car owners plan to start setting up at 2:30, and are invited to wear costumes and bring decorations, according to Jerry and Kristy Keller, who are part of the Sunday afternoon classic car group that meets in the same location. “Every time they do the Main Street Trick or Treat, our car show guys hold ‘trunk or treat,’” Kristy Keller said. The Kellers may be reached at 760-789-3396. n OCTOBER 22, 2015

Turn Clocks Back Nov. 1 Daylight Saving Time will end in California on Sunday, Nov. 1, when we return to Pacific Standard Time. Remember to set your clocks back one hour before going to bed Saturday night. An easy way to remember which
way to turn the clock is to quote the old saying, “Spring forward; fall back.” In other words, always turn clocks back in the fall and forward in the spring. Daylight Saving Time will return March 13, 2016. n

During the program, Veterans of Foreign Wars 3783 Post Commander Doug Scholl gave a compelling speech asking each NS1 (first-year cadet) to listen carefully and never be afraid to ask questions. He encouraged NS2s to be mentors who teach but not lecture. He told NS3s to practice teamwork and be like a chain that links the newer cadets with their senior officers. His advice for the NS4s was to stay focused on the horizon and not lose sight of their charted path.

Local Dentist Finds ‘Trouble’ on His Bucket List
By Ruth Lepper ~ the journal
N
ancy and Martin Koontz enlisted the help of a local dentist when it came time to have some teeth cleaning done on one of their pets. The dentist,Todd Brilliant, was more than happy to lend a hand. “It was on my bucket list,” Brilliant said. “I have always been a huge animal lover.” Perhaps it is a bit unusual for a dentist to volunteer for the task, when he typically works
on the teeth of local residents at his San Diego Country Estates practice. The pets in question are pigs. Pot-bellied pigs — 95 in all, in various sizes. The Koontzes run a private sanctuary in Ramona for their roly-poly friends, “Grazin Pig Acres.” When they first moved to Ramona in 1998, they brought one pet pig with them. As they started opening their home and farm as a rescue sanctuary, word soon spread. Calls were coming in from near and far, and they couldn’t turn

any of them down. Although their sanctuary has nonprofit status, the Koontzes cover the costs of caring for their animals. Martin Koontz said their out-of-pocket expenses average $3,500 a month. And that doesn’t include medical bills, as needed. Food, fencing, tarps and building materials are ongoing expenses. When visitors drive into Grazin Pig Acres, chances are they will be met by Tubby, the smallest pig in residence. As word — or oinks — spread, other pigs start meandering up to welcome the visitors. There’s Puumba, the largest pig in the pack at about 400 pounds, followed by Oprah, Harley, Betty Boop, Wilbur (there are two Wilburs), Sammy, Stanley, Charlotte and on and on. Nancy and Martin know them all by name and the stories behind their coming to live here. The love and care they have for each of their pigs

is evident. “It takes a while to develop their trust,” Martin Koontz said. Belly rubs help in getting to know each other. They are still working on Trouble. They refer to him as “the wild one.” Weighing in at more than 100 pounds at around 4 years of age, it was Trouble’s turn to visit with the dentist. But because he hasn’t fully settled in to farm life, Trouble first had to be sedated by local veterinarian Miska Paget, who has been working with the Koontzes and their pigs for the past 10 or 12 years.
Once the sedation set in, Dr. Brilliant went to work. Using a “giggly wire” and a large file, the dentist trimmed off four sharp tusks, then scraped plaque from the rest of the animal’s teeth. When he was done, Trouble was tucked in with blankets and a cozy comforter to sleep off the rest of the sedation. Paget said it depends mostly on the animal’s disposition, but Trouble would probably enjoy about a one-hour nap. She couldn’t predict how he would be once he woke up. n

amona’s second annual Community Appreciation Pancake Breakfast for veterans is coming up Nov. 7. The community-wide event, dubbed “Operation Flapjacks,” is being held to recognize and honor veterans and their families for their service and many sacrifices, as our country prepares to celebrate Veterans Day on Nov. 11. The breakfast will be from 8 to 10:30 a.m. at Ramona Community Center, 434 Aqua Ln. Last year, 100 breakfasts were served, and the organizers have a goal to double that number this year. Commander Mike Thweatt of Ramona American Legion Post 332 and Brad Stewart with Family 1st Financial Solutions are organizing the breakfast, along with Walt and Carol Huff and Kathi Thweatt.
The menu will include pancakes, scrambled eggs and sausage, for a cost of $5. Ramona Senior Center’s head cook Lora Cicalo is volunteering her skills in the kitchen, and the Community Center is donating the use of the kitchen and dining hall. An opportunity drawing will also be held, and sponsorships and donations from local businesses and merchants are welcome. Ramona High School Navy Junior Reserve Officers Training Corps will open the event with the presentation of the colors and will help serve the meal and clean up. Call 760-788-5947 or 760-315-1675 to sponsor the event or donate an item for the drawing. n

RMWD Board Approves Resolution of Appreciation for Retiring Employee By Ruth Lepper ~ the journal
R
amona Municipal Water District Board of Directors paid tribute to retiring employee Doug McIntosh and heard a report on recycling water from the San Vicente Wastewater Plant at its Oct. 13 meeting. McIntosh has been employed by the district for more than 30 years, starting in 1985 and working his way up the ladder from utility operator to the position of meter services supervisor. His last day of employment will be Nov. 2. “For many years, Doug has been the district’s expert on meter testing and maintenance
and used his technical knowledge to analyze unusual situations and apply logical solutions,” Board President Darrell Beck read from the resolution presented to McIntosh. “Doug has maintained a very positive image for the district and is known for his excellent customer service; his responses were always timely, thorough and professional,” Beck continued. RMWD General Manager David Barnum praised McIntosh for his service to the district, saying there have only been positive comments about his work ethics. He offered

In other business before the board, Chief Financial Officer Richard Hannasch and consultant Alex Handlers, with Bartle Wells Associates, gave a PowerPoint presentation on the current disposition of recycled water from the San Vicente Wastewater Plant. The district sells recycled water to San Diego Country Estates for its golf course and to Spangler Peak Ranch, which is located in that area, for $35 per acre-foot. RMWD is at the bottom of the chart of 16 water agencies in the state for the percentage generated for recycled water compared to potable water. “I produce art of some type on a daily basis,” she said. “Fused glass is my most recent interest. I create unique, fused-

“All this is the exploration of an artist like Lyn Feudner, whose approach to the field of art covers four distinct mediums,” said Judy Nachazel, president of the Ramona Art Guild. “Not only paint and spray, but metal and glass. It’s a matter of composition, texture, and dimensionality.” Feudner said she often spends a full day and part of the night preparing for a show, as she will for the Ramona Art & Wine Festival on Nov. 7. She’ll place some of her award winners in a 10-by-10 foot display area. “I experiment with many types of artwork,” she added. “When I lived in Mission Beach, I did pottery.” From her vast collection featured on her website you’ll find a splash of deep red from a hibiscus flower, the brightness of a koi fish, Arabian stallions

Feudner’s artwork and jewelry are shown at Studio 21, the Art Glass Guild, Spanish Village and Brandon Gallery. The San Diego Zoo and Safari Park have offered her creations, as well. She is a member of Ramona and Julian art guilds, Art Glass Guild and Art Glass Association of Southern California, and is one of the Ramona Open Studios Tour artists. She has a degree in fine arts from the University of Minnesota and has continued her studies at UCSD, SDSU and Palomar College. “When I become less active, I may return to the book I was writing,” she said. Whether you aim to carve a jack-o’-lantern or bake a yummy pie, the perfect pumpkin is sure to be found here. The Biblical View of the Bible
I
Part VI, Unity
n this sixth installment in the series on the biblical view of the Bible, the topic is the unity of Scripture. To speak of the unity of Scripture is to say that the Bible speaks with a unified voice. In the Bible, we do not have two separate books with two different messages, but one book (even if given in two Testaments) with a unified and consistent message. Not only does the Bible not contradict
itself, but its message from start to finish — from Genesis to the Book of Revelation — is indeed a unified one. Look at how often the writers of the New Testament quote from, refer to, or in some way allude to the Old Testament Scriptures. For example, read through the book of Matthew, the first book of the New Testament, and notice how often Matthew states that something about the
person, work or words of Jesus Christ is actually the fulfillment of Old Testament prophecy. It is practically the theme of the entire book! Or read through the book of Romans. In Paul’s extensive explanation of the gospel throughout that book, he quotes from or refers to the Old Testament over and over again — including the books of Genesis, Exodus, the Psalms, Isaiah, etc. — in order to make his case. The Old and New Testaments together comprise God’s revelation of Himself to a sinful humanity. In both Testaments, God is referred to as “holy, holy, holy” (Is. 6:3 and Rev. 4:8). In both, God is described as a “consuming fire” (Deut. 4:24 and Heb. 12:29). In both, God judges sinners for their wickedness and unbelief. The same God who struck down Pharaoh and his armies (Ex. 14:26-31) also struck down King Herod for his attacks on God’s people and for not giving glory to God
Ramona Events
(Acts 12:20-24). God does not change. Not only that, but the way of salvation does not change. The Old Testament — not just the New Testament — is about Jesus Christ and the way of salvation by the grace of God through faith in Him. Jesus, Himself, said that Moses (the human author of the first five books of the Old Testament — Genesis through Deuteronomy) wrote about Him (John 5:46). The Apostle Paul twice reminds us that Abraham, the father of the Jews, was saved by faith (Rom. 4:3 and Gal. 3:6). And
where did Paul get that notion? From Gen. 15:6, which says that Abraham “believed the Lord, and he counted it to him as righteousness.” I hope that you have found this to be helpful and illuminating. But most of all, I hope you come to see Christ in all of the Scriptures and come to Him by faith for eternal life. n Rev. Andy Schreiber is pastor of Ramona Valley Presbyterian Church. Ramona Chamber Directors Elected
When Investing, Put Time On Your Side
Submitted by Patrick Meskell
N
ow that we’re well into autumn, the days are getting noticeably shorter. The change in seasons reminds us that time is passing — and it’s important to use that time wisely. When used well, in fact, time can be your greatest gift in many walks of life — and that’s certainly true when you invest. To illustrate the importance of time, let’s look at a scenario. Suppose you start saving for retirement when you are 25. If you invest $3,000 per year in a tax-deferred vehicle, such as a traditional IRA, and you hypothetically earn a 7 percent annual return, you will have accumulated more than $640,000 after 40 years, when you reach 65 and are ready to retire. (Keep in mind that you will be taxed on withdrawals.) Now suppose you wait until you’re 55 before you start saving seriously for retirement. If you put that same $3,000 per year in that same IRA, earning that same hypothetical 7 percent return, you’d only end up with slightly more than $44,000 after 10 years, when you reach 65. And to accumulate the $640,000 you would have got-
ten after 40 years by contributing just $3,000 per year, you would have had to put in about $43,500 per year for the 10 years between ages 55 and 65. Clearly, it’s a lot easier to come up with $3,000 per year than $43,500. So, to accumulate the resources you need for a comfortable retirement, you’ll help your cause greatly by saving and investing as early in your working life as possible — and then continue to save and invest right up to, and even during, your retirement years. The ability to potentially grow your portfolio sizably is the key benefit of using time when you invest — but it’s not the only benefit. You can also use time as a target, or a way to frame a specific investment goal. For example, suppose you have an 8-year-old child whom you want to send to college in 10 years. When that day arrives, wouldn’t it be nice to know that you’ve been saving money for a decade? One popular college savings vehicle is a 529 plan, which has high contribution limits and allows tax-free withdrawals, provided the
money is used only for qualified higher education expenses. (Withdrawals for other purposes will be taxed and may be subject to an additional penalty.) You can also use time as a signal to adjust your investment strategy. If you’re going to retire in, say, two or three years, you might want to shift some — but certainly not all — of your assets from growth-oriented investments to income-producing ones. As you know, the market will always fluctuate, so you don’t want to be in a position where, once you retire, you need to start taking significant withdrawals — i.e., selling investments — when the market is down. Remember the time-honored rule of investing: “Buy low, sell high.” When you invest, make the best possible use of time — remember, it’s the one asset that can’t be replenished. n Patrick Meskell is a financial advisor for Edward Jones. Borrego Days Desert Festival will mark its 50th anniversary with the theme, “Those Were the Days.” The festival, presented by the AnzaBorrego Foundation and Anza-Borrego Desert State Park, is set for Oct. 23 to 25 and promises plenty of familyfriendly fun. Kicking off the event on Friday will be a VIP reception. On Saturday at 10 a.m., festivalgoers will line Palm Canyon Drive for the popular parade that includes a flyover, equestrians, marching bands, floats, clowns, dancers and more.
The festival will continue Saturday and Sunday with live entertainment, food and craft vendors, children’s activities, beer and wine garden, contests, shopping, art, cars and a commercial-grade family carnival zone. Events take place at Christmas Circle Community Park, 600 Christmas Circle Dr., in the center of Borrego Springs. Festivities on Friday begin at 5 p.m. On Saturday, the parade is at 10 a.m. and events continue until 5 p.m. Sunday hours are from 10 a.m. to 5 p.m. Visit www.borregodays.com. n
Kiwanis Supports Emergency Animal Rescue Kiwanis Club of Ramona donated $500 to Emergency Animal Rescue earlier this month. Kiwanis President Paul Tarr, left, and club member Carol Bazinet, right, made the presentation to Jan Pickton, who represents the rescue organization. Emergency Animal Rescue was founded in 1993, and has been rescuing animals from hazardous situations since. The donation will further its efforts to offer 24-hour animal rescue assistance.
