ffectionately referred to as the “Valley of the Sun,” Ramona is about 40 miles from downtown San Diego, and it may be one of Southern California’s best-kept secrets. Situated in the heart of San Diego County at an elevation of 1,400 feet, Ramona offers an enticing mix of modern-day amenities and oldfashioned charm. Newcomers will discover that “friendliness” is a household word, as residents greet one and all with wide smiles. Locals are proud to retain the small-town feel while actively embracing the changing times. Visitors are often amazed to find that all roads into town take them through a dramatic landscape of massive boulders, rolling foothills and wide-open spaces, with vistas that include the mountains or the sea at many turns. Drenched in history, Ramona is home to a rare two-story adobe structure — Ramona Town Hall,

dedicated in 1894. One of the first major residences in town, the Verlaque House, has found a new purpose as the Guy B. Woodward Museum, which houses relics from the past and provides glimpses into the town’s early years. On and off historic Main Street are retail and antique stores, restaurants, classic car shows, golf courses, a paintball park and year-round events that make Ramona a place to remember. More than two-dozen vineyards and wineries are set in the nationally designated Ramona Valley American Viticultural Area, presenting guests with an opportunity to enjoy one of Southern California’s most delectable beverages. There is something for everyone in Ramona. With miles of hiking, biking and equestrian trails — not to mention the abundance of wildlife — it is an outdoor enthusiast’s dream. We invite you to utilize this Guide to Ramona to help you plan your next adventure to this beautiful town. n

amona continues to grow while keeping its rural appeal and quality of life. Ramona has much to offer to the community and those who visit our town. It is an exciting time to rediscover Ramona, and the Chamber of Commerce’s goals are to bring residents closer to the elements that make this town a desirable place to live and visit. With the development of a mobile app, “Experience Ramona,” and the acquisition of an events calendar, www.ramonaevents.com, residents need only go to their phone or the Internet to discover what is going on in town. Our annual events will take on new characteristics, making them more attractive to our residents and visitors. There is something new happening every week in Ramona — new things to do, new places to visit and new businesses to explore. The Chamber has a goal to introduce these happenings to our residents, bringing them closer to the town in which they live. The Chamber has developed a partnership with the schools and 14
will pursue many opportunities for students and the school district, as well. The benefits to these entities are being defined and will be introduced as they take fruition. The Back Country Coalition has been formed with Julian, Borrego Springs, Alpine and Valley Center. The mission of this coalition is to identify the diverse and unique characteristics of each community, while also defining their commonality. Tourism is important to all of these towns. It is a goal to bring tourists to all our communities, allowing them to experience what makes the backcountry a special area in which to visit and live. Ramona is a busy community, yet many of our folks do not know what they can experience on a weekly or daily basis. The Chamber plans to inform them, and help our town and its people become better connected. Look around, walk around, hike — and “Experience Ramona.” n Sally Westbrook is the 2017 Ramona Chamber of Commerce President. Visit www.ramonachamber.com

And Visitor Center
Bringing Business and Community Together
The Ramona Chamber welcomes you. Since 1908, the Ramona Chamber of Commerce has been serving our town. Our mission statement is to develop and maintain a climate for viable economic growth, to promote loyalty to and networking for local businesses, and to demonstrate an outstanding leadership role in our community. For more than 100 years, we have been providing events such as the Annual Awards Banquet, Ramona Artists Open Studios Tour, Ramona Country Fair, Taste of Ramona, Merchants’ Safe Trick or Treat on Main Street and the Annual Christmas Tree Lighting for our community. We mean business! In 1922, the Chamber was known as “The Ramona Improvement Society.” With help from our Chamber members, we are able to offer economic development, educational grant programs, business education and networking opportunities to our residents and businesses. Last Wednesday Workshops, Monthly Mixers, Connections over Coffee, ribbon cuttings, monthly Chamber newsletters and advertising are only some of the opportunities we provide to our local businesses. Today, the Chamber continues to improve our community and encourage others to “Experience Ramona,” the H.E.A.R.T. of San Diego County.

ikers from all over San Diego County venture to Ramona for a chance to hike the amazing trails this area has to offer. With so many to choose from, it can be almost overwhelming when it comes time to make a decision. Among the many popular trails are Mount Woodson, Iron Mountain and Cedar Creek Falls. For those looking to hike areas that are somewhat less traveled, check out the two trails in Clevenger Canyon Open Space Park. The trailheads are on either side of the road just outside town on Highway 78 between Ramona and Escondido. The Clevenger Canyon North trail brings hikers into a valley and across Santa Ysabel Creek before they attempt the more than 1,000foot climb to the top. The narrow, winding path and great height may certainly add to one’s rising heart rate, but those who push on will be rewarded at the peak with stunning views of San Pasqual Valley and the mountains in the distance. On the opposite side of Highway
78 sits the Clevenger Canyon South trailhead. Though not as difficult as its northern counterpart, it is still a challenging hike with a spectacular end. The dirt path snakes its way up the hillside and around large granite boulders that cover the terrain. About a half-mile from the trailhead, hikers will encounter a split in the trail. Those who follow the trail to the left will eventually travel along the top of a ridge, where they will encounter a large boulder with two metal chairs bolted to the top. Not only do these chairs offer a great spot to rest before the descent, but also unmatchable views of the valley below. Both trails are subject to erosion, so it is important that hikers stay on the designated paths. Packing plenty of water and a first-aid kit are essential. As these trails are less traveled, it is also important for hikers to let someone know where they will be before they venture out. Are you ready for an adventure? Pack up your bag and head out on the trail! n

Ramona’s Wine Country
A Tasting Adventure W
— Angela McLaughlin
ith wineries, vineyards and tasting rooms sprinkled throughout picturesque, rolling foothills, Ramona’s wine country offers a peaceful and relaxing tasting experience, unique from all others. Ramona is conveniently located near San Diego, in the “Valley of the Sun,” making it an ideal destination for visitors to experience some of what Southern California has to offer. As an officially recognized American Viticultural Area, the region has quickly become one of the highest-density winery and vineyard spots in San Diego County. Sit back and relax with a glass of award-winning wine while avoiding the crowds of other popular wine tasting destinations, such as Napa Valley and Temecula. Though it may not be as well known, Ramona’s wine country has nothing to be bashful about. With friendly people and an enjoyable atmosphere, it truly offers an experience to remember. As a region that once hosted only a few vineyards and wineries, the area has exploded with talent and is ready to impress with more than two-dozen tasting rooms — each with its own captivating ambiance and palate-pleasing beverages. Experience ranch-inspired verandas, Italian-influenced patios, laid-back outdoor tasting areas —all offering individualized adventures for every guest, all with amazing views and delectable wines. From connoisseurs to novices, Ramona’s vintners offer something for everyone. Talented winemakers produce many of their wines with locally grown grapes, making these tasting experiences something to share a toast over. Popular wines include Cabernet Sauvignon, Merlot, Cabernet Franc, Petit Verdot, Zinfandel, Syrah, Petite Sirah, Muscat, Tempranillo and others. What can make your tasting experience even better? Check out the events held at many of the local wineries, such as food pairing, painting, live music and more. Whether you participate in a traditional tasting, sip a glass of wine or order a bottle to share, the experience will be unforgettable — Ramona’s wine country is a must! n

night of entertainment for family and friends often includes good food, good wine and great company. However, for some, pairing wine with food can seem more like rocket science and less like the fun experience it can truly be. With a few guidelines, this daunting task may become less intimidating. One of the first things to consider is the type of dish you are planning to serve. Balancing the food and wine together so that they complement each other — without either overwhelming the other — is the ultimate goal.

“The general rule has been to pair white wines with lighter foods, such as poultry, fish and delicately prepared pork,” says Elaine Lyttleton, winemaker and owner of Hatfield Creek Vineyards and Winery. “Red wines are usually served with the bolder, darker meats, such as steak, ribs and hearty ethnic foods like Italian and Mexican.” This is a great starting point for beginners, but Lyttleton says, “Every

rule needs to be broken, and not all red or white wines are created equal. A winemaker can make any wine, any color, any variety, either dry or sweet. Food pairing will vary greatly depending on which of these wines you have, and whether they’re made sweet or dry.” Knowing a little about the bottle of wine you’ve chosen will go a long way toward determining what type of

dish or appetizer to pair it with. Lyttleton offers a few suggestions for popular wines produced in the Ramona area. Merlot pairs nicely with aged cheese, steak, lamb and lightly spiced foods. One of her “rule-breakers” is pairing it with grilled poultry, which complements the flavors nicely. Zinfandel is a popular red wine that pairs well with pizza, lamb and lightly spiced Mexican food. Lyttleton adds, “My favorite pairing is with my brandied mushroom paté!” For white wine, Lyttleton says, “Viognier, which is fruity and flowery, can stand up to richer, though lighter, foods such as rich fish dishes, creamy fowl, veal, duck and goose.” Many people make the mistake of only focusing on the main ingredient of the dish — such as chicken —

instead of looking at the dominant flavor, which is often based on the sauce. A wine will go best when paired with the most prominent flavor, which may not necessarily be the main ingredient. “Petite Sirah is earthy, peppery, spicy, big, bold and intense,” she says. “Lamb chops with lots of garlic and basil, spiced cheeses, wild game, pungent sauced food and meats grilled over wood or charcoal go deliciously.” Any gathering is sure to be a success if you keep these basic guidelines in mind. To make it even easier, pay a visit to some local wineries to find that special bottle, or check out their websites to learn more about wineand-food events in the area. n days gone by, people would pass through Ramona on their way to other locations. But today, visitors are making the Valley of the Sun their destination, because it has so much to offer. With a burgeoning art scene, Ramona is fast becoming a platform to exhibit local talent. Supporting these artistic efforts are the Ramona H.E.A.R.T. Mural Project, 2Create Gallery, Olde Ramona Hotel Gallery and the Ramona Library. The Mural Project is a nonprofit organization whose goal is to create a reason for visitors to stop and stay a while. “By bringing art to over 30 walls in the town of Ramona, tourists will not only be encouraged to stop here on their way through town to Julian or the desert, they’ll consider making the Ramona mural tour a destination,” says Elaine Lyttleton, president of the mural project. “A heart icon — or several — is painted into each mural to entice drivers to stop, get out and find the hearts.” There’s no question that the murals bring color, vibrancy and creativity,

while also exemplifying all the wonderful qualities of Ramona. 2Create Gallery, which merged with The Art Center, features many works by local artists, showcasing the wonderful creativeness of the area. “Everyone who comes in is so grateful there is such a wonderful new gallery in downtown Ramona and is truly amazed at the wide variety and diversity of the art they see in the gallery,” says Molly JaegerBegent, owner of 2Create Gallery. “The gallery has attracted supportive and proactive community members who are participating in our efforts to bring creative art in all forms to Ramona through creative events.” The Art Center, located inside the gallery, offers a variety of classes and workshops weekdays and some weekends. Other popular places to view pieces by talented artists are the Ramona Library and Olde Ramona Hotel Gallery. The library hosts a permanent collection of artwork and

is the monthly meeting location of the Ramona Art Guild, which gathers on the third Wednesday. The guild welcomes new members. The Olde Ramona Hotel Gallery also displays art by local artists and offers exhibits and classes. A great way to view local art in Ramona is during the Open Studios Tour, held each spring. This year, the tour will take place April 8 and 9, and will give artists the opportunity to throw open their studio doors and invite guests to discuss their artwork and how they work — and it will give visitors the chance to purchase interesting pieces directly from the artists. “The community has been so receptive to creative ideas and has been able to bring energetic and creative people together,” says Jaeger-Begent. Let your imagination and inspiration come alive as you experience Ramona’s artistic side. n

25 years of experience working in education, she has worn many hats, including serving as a high school teacher, elementary and high school principal, director of human resources, and assistant superintendent. And on top of everything else, she’s a wife and mother of four. Just a few of the attributes that have helped her achieve success include setting daily priorities, staying optimistic and maintaining a culture of improvement. She also believes that a good night’s sleep is essential to being able to excel at one’s job. With a personal philosophy that mirrors the district’s 2016-17 theme, “Together we can make a difference,” she is committed to working with teachers, staff and community organizations to provide a safe and positive learning environment. Her top priorities are managing the day-to-day operations of the district and working with the RUSD Board to ensure students’ success. In addition to balancing the budget, despite declining enrollment, she manages and hires all district employees. “We have more than 1,000 employees,” she says. “In fact, we’re one of the largest employers in Ramona.” Dedicated to improving test scores, which are currently in the top onethird in the county, she says, “We have a ways to go, but continue to show positive growth.” Staffieri encourages parents to play an active role in their students’ learning by connecting what the children learn at school with everyday life. In turn, she prompts kids to do their part by being active listeners, asking questions and establishing good study habits, no matter what grade they are in. n

J
Where Racing Continues
— Johnny McDonald
ust off Wildcat Canyon Road on the outskirts of Ramona are two auto racetracks that could be considered steps back in time. Indeed, a couple of rarities. On one side is an eighth-mile drag strip, and on the other is a quarter-mile dirt oval for cars of all descriptions. Their weekly race seasons run from April to the end of the year. Hot Rod Magazine praised the drag strip promoters for keeping the sport alive. Drag strips in the Southwest had been the historic beginnings of the sport. So many have disappeared. Barona Drag Strip — an eighthmile strip sanctioned by the National Hot Road Association — is one of
the last drag strips standing in Southern California. With Irwindale’s drag strip closing and the Speed World drag strip outside Phoenix about to have its fate determined, it leaves Fontana as the only other track remaining. The quarter-mile Barona Speedway is home to drivers who find the challenges there within their capabilities in stock cars, dwarfs, ponies and IMCA modifieds. The summer months are packed with fans who arrive at 1 p.m. for the races that start at 5 p.m. Camping is permitted and the Barona Speedway promoters believe they make every effort to assure guests’ visits will be enjoyable. n

Dos Picos County Park Photo by Annette Williams
N
estled under a canopy of trees, in a peaceful park setting, is the perfect place to spend an afternoon. Whether you are looking to visit for the day or perhaps longer, Ramona has two options awaiting discovery.
Collier County Park
Situated in the heart of Ramona at 626 E St., Collier County Park is an eight-acre community dayuse park offering a variety of activities for guests of all ages. As the first park established in San Diego County, Collier has several shaded picnic areas, basketball and tennis courts and age-specific playgrounds. Complete with barbecues, a large lawn, walking paths, gardens filled with California-native plants and two
areas that may be reserved for special events, it is a popular place for families to spend the day.
Dos Picos County Park
On the west end of town in the shadow of the foothills lies Dos Picos County Park at 17953 Dos Picos Park Rd. Offering a wealth of activities for visitors — including camping, hiking, fishing, picnic areas and playgrounds — the park is open year-round. Though easy to access, its remote location makes it a wonderful place to watch local wildlife, especially for birdwatchers. Camping options vary from tent and RV sites to small cabins. Areas are available by reservation. Day-use parking is $3 per vehicle. Visit www.sdparks.org. n

Iconic Town Hall

wings were finally completed, but the historic Main Hall’s restoration is ongoing. The most recent project has been applying a UV coating to the front of the building, which not only beautifies, but also protects. “We’re hoping to get a lot more out of it than the paint job in 2008,” said Town Hall Board of Trustees President Woody Kirkman. Grants have come in from various sources to further the Main Hall renovation project. The next phase will include structural engineering, architectural blueprints, mechanical and electrical upgrades, and more. As the work continues, Kirkman said they made an interesting discovery. “We pulled back the ceiling tiles and exposed hand-stenciling on the plaster above and below the crown
molding,” he said. “It’s an area I’d never seen before.” Kirkman says he would like to see the hall completed by its 125th anniversary in 2019. The board and Honorary Ramona Mayor Sharon Davis are working hard toward that goal, and Kirkman estimates that it would be about a two-year project if funding were fully in place. In the meantime, the wings are back in service to the community, being used for church services, baby showers, art shows, a wedding, birthday parties, retirement parties, celebration of life events, smallbusiness meetings and Ramona Chamber of Commerce’s Casino Night, as well as doubling as a haunted house and as a place to visit Santa Claus. “All kinds of stuff going on!” said Kirkman. n

Alternate Routes to Town
San Vicente Road
T
raffic incidents are a major cause of road closures in the backcountry, especially on State Routes 67 and 78, the most heavily traveled roads into Ramona. Drivers should be aware of alternate routes into town, such as Highland Valley Road, which intersects Pomerado Road in Rancho Bernardo; Wildcat Canyon Road through the Barona Indian Reservation, which is accessible from Lakeside; and Old Julian Highway, which bypasses a portion of SR-78 for those traveling from Santa Ysabel or Julian. The two main access roads between
downtown Ramona and the communities of San Diego Country Estates and Rancho San Vicente, are Vista Ramona Road, via Old Julian Highway; and San Vicente Road, via 10th Street or Warnock Road. The Ramona Community Protection and Evacuation Plan notes that alternate routes may be steep, narrow and winding, and often go through mountainous terrain with native vegetation that would be dangerous to travel if a fire were burning in the area. The plan is available at www.sandiegocounty. gov/oes/docs/CPEP_Ramona4.pdf. n
