here’s a lot of talk around town about the people, places and special events going on in Ramona. Not only are visitors marking their calendars in anticipation of their quaint country getaways, everyone is counting down the days until the 34th Annual Rodeo, 44th Annual Country Fair, 10th Annual Oktoberfest, and the many other activities mentioned in this Guide to Ramona. While townspeople are chatting about the excellent real estate conditions that make home ownership a reality, another Ramona school received its California Distinguished Schools designation. There’s a hum about the thriving

wine and grape producing community and the prestigious awards many wineries are earning. Exciting discussions are taking place in homes and businesses all over Southern California, as recreationalists plan their next Ramona adventure that could include hiking, biking, horseback riding, golfing or other activities. But it’s not just the numerous trails, breathtaking views or rich town history people are mentioning, it’s the many merchants and restaurateurs who offer a friendly greeting to all. Whether you’re a first-time visitor or a longtime resident, there are so many great things to talk about when you live, work or play in and around Ramona. n

On The Cover Driving through Ramona on picturesque Old Julian Highway, you will come upon this 1935 International pickup truck, owned by Fred and Alicia Ledezma. It was a fully functioning vehicle until 2007, when it burned in the

Witch fire, along with the garage it was housed in. Turning rust and ashes into a thing of beauty, the family converted the truck into a blossoming planter box.

Ramona Community Foundation. He credits former committee member R.D. Baker for the installation of the units and whose voice can be heard in each narration. “The automated system and surveillance will allow people to go at their own pace,” said Judy Nachazel, president of the Ramona Pioneer Historical Society. “People will learn what these items were used for and maybe, too, how they were assembled, and find out what these pioneers did.” Nachazel indicated that the excellent voice-overs can also be instructional for new docents. Woodward and museum board members have worked hard to make the facility an integral part of the community. Guy B. Five Reasons to Visit Ramona Wineries

A

new winemaking region in east San Diego County, Ramona offers experiences you may not find in California’s older wine regions. Organized in 2006 as an American Viticultural Area, Ramona currently supports about 30 wineries. 1. Perfect Growing Conditions The region, designated as an American Viticultural Area, offers an ideal climate for growing wine grapes — a compact valley surrounded by

mountains that’s midway between the Pacific and the desert. 2. Plenty of Room to Grow The valley occupies about 89,000 acres, with about 62 currently planted in grapes. Since many of the vineyards are new, winemakers may purchase grapes from neighboring regions where mature fruit is available. 3. Competent Winemakers Most winemakers have studied winemaking for years, practicing home winemaking or working for other

wineries. As you visit the wineries, you’ll find they have different ideas about how to make the best wine. 4. Friendly Tasting Rooms Tasting rooms are intimate, where you can spend time tasting and talking with friendly owners. At some you can taste al fresco while you savor a picnic lunch. 5. Beyond Reds and Whites Some winemakers are experimenting with sweet styles, considered dessert wines. Look for Ports made with different grapes and honey-like whites.

amona wineries aren’t just growing a bountiful bouquet of grapes, they are growing a reputation as an up-andcoming leader in the industry. After a short and scenic drive from downtown San Diego, guests will find Ramona boutique wineries both intimate and inviting. Most of the tasting rooms offer casual and comfortable settings, with both indoor and outdoor accommodations. Oftentimes, the winemakers are on-site, ready to personally assist visitors with palatable recommendations and give suggestions for pairing specific wines for holiday and celebratory events. Most tasting rooms are open on weekends, and groups greater than 10 should call ahead. n

t’s an unforgettable experience when the skies over Ramona explode with color during the annual Ramona Rotary Community Fireworks and Family Picnic on July 4. Old Glory proudly waves, as residents take time to celebrate the Independence Day holiday. The event, located behind Olive Peirce Middle School, will feature food vendors, DJ music, and games and activities for children, welcoming several thousand residents who will enjoy relaxing with family, friends and neighbors. Ramona High School Navy Junior Reserve Officers Training Corps will present colors about 6:30 p.m., according to Pete Schiff of Ramona Rotary Club, event sponsor. As darkness falls, anticipation builds

and the music begins, with the fireworks synchronized to a patriotic program on KYXY 96.5 FM radio. “This is something that is put on by the Rotary every year in conjunction with the business community and the public,” said Schiff. “Celebrating the Fourth of July is something we should all take time to do. We encourage people to come early, stake out their place to sit and eat, bring their own food, soft drinks and water, and food vendors are there as a convenience.” To join the free festivities, bring blankets and lawn chairs to 1521 Hanson Ln. Gates open at 5:30 p.m., with fireworks beginning at 9 p.m. Admission and parking are free. Tobacco, alcohol and pets are not allowed. n

ravelers on Highway 67 south of Archie Moore Road might be curious to know why so many cars have been parked on the side of the road recently. Some are the typical Mount Woodson hikers, but there are new trail-seekers, too. They are the outdoorsy kind, ready to trek to the top in hopes of finding the one-of-a-kind rock dubbed “potato chip rock.” Stretching over the top of native landscape and a massive granite outcrop, the lengthy rock chip is labeled a “must-see.” See ‘Potato Chip Rock’ continued on page 56

here will be great treats with no tricks this Halloween during the annual Ramona Merchants’ Safe Trickor-Treat on Main Street event. School-age and younger children, accompanied by an adult, are invited to participate by dressing in costume and walking from business to business, up and down Main Street. Merchants between Third and 16th streets will pass out candy, coupons and other goodies, while families have the opportunity to get introduced or reacquainted with a plethora of businesses throughout the community. Organized by the Ramona Chamber of Commerce, the event is expected to draw a few hundred happy-go-lucky kids and provide a safe Halloween environment. Chamber Director Robert Argyelan says the family-friendly activity is a great way to enjoy a safe and fun Halloween. He encourages Ramona business owners who do not have storefronts directly on Main Street to contact the Chamber about additional distribution areas.

Treats will be handed out on Halloween, Friday, Oct. 31, from 4 to 6 p.m., or while supplies last. n

‘Potato Chip Rock’ Continued from page 48

After taking a nearly two-mile climb to the top of the mountain, hikers find that the trail to potato chip rock is short, but the line for a photo is said to be long, and it can be particularly busy on weekends. While it has been visited by hundreds, maybe even thousands, it gained notoriety last year when it was named as one of “11 Amazing Places You Need To Visit Once In Your Life” in an article featured on the popular travel website www.earthtraveling.com. Potato chip rock earned the No. 9 spot, listed alongside places such as the river of flowers in Keukenhof, Holland; Melissani Cave in Greece; and Green Fly Geyser in Nevada. The path is pretty well marked, and though it is a relatively easy hike, it can be slippery. Hikers should bring plenty of water, wear good shoes and listen to their body’s cues. For those who make the trip, the reward of viewing this natural wonder awaits. n
