was also a glamorous hostess in San Diego, the beautiful chairwoman of the Charity Ball in 1925, and one of the early movie stars who played in Westerns directed by D.W. Griffith. Among her friends were Lillian Gish, Mabel Normand and Charlie Chaplin. A gracious Southern charmer, this versatile lady came to California from Glasgow, Ky., in 1900, with her parents, Cora and Clarence Wood. She came with her family’s gracious Southern charm and with the pioneer spirit of her Scottish ancestors. She had an intense vitality, good looks and a sense of humor. Margaret grew up with cowboys and Indians — a different world from Kentucky. Yet, she never forgot she was a lady. Margaret met Griffing Bancroft while she was in the movies. He was the son of the famous historian Hubert Howe Bancroft, and in his own right a naturalist, explorer, ornithologist and author. They were married in 1917. Margaret was a great help to Griffing, as she was afraid of nothing

and joined him on his many explorations into the wilderness. She was always the perfect hostess and a capable board member of the Natural History Museum, the Red Cross and the Junior League. During World War II, she worked for Convair as a woman’s counselor and helped organize the backcountry for the Red Cross. An early enthusiast of keeping fit, she swam in the cold surf at La Jolla nearly every day. She loved horse racing, and during the season at Del Mar, she was there every week, dressed in the latest fashions. She was a vital, unique woman with a gift for friendship, who enriched the lives of everyone she touched. It is in her memory the rose garden was created. n

A Homebuyer’s Checklist — Tracy Rolling

H

ome buying is no easy task. Many folks make a list a mile long that covers everything from square footage and kitchen efficiency to the number of bedrooms and baths. Besides these prerequisites, there are other must-haves, such as the quality of schools, low crime rate, area businesses and overall virtues suitable for individuals, couples and families. People looking for value, character and a strong sense of community need look no further. According to Sally Westbrook, President of the Ramona Real Estate Association, Ramona offers something for everyone. With a variety of local neighborhoods and planned communities to choose from, including San Diego Country Estates, Rancho San Vicente, Oak Tree Ranch, Mount Woodson, Holly Oaks, Black Canyon Estates, and many more, there are homes designed for all budgets and seasons of life. Westbrook says that no matter if people are first-time home buyers, expanding their family, or ready to retire, location remains a key element when it comes to purchasing a house. She recommends that buyers create 10

a checklist of wants and needs and plan to consult a Ramona realtor, who will know unique features about the community. “Our realtors are caring, knowledgeable people who want to make sure clients understand what they are purchasing.” More than just knowing the number of bedrooms or property acreage, Ramona realtors can better identify specific areas that meet the needs of a homebuyer’s lifestyle. She says that wells, septic systems, agricultural regulations and easements are just a few of the things prospective home buyers should be aware of. “Our goal is not to just sell a house, but to find our clients a community they can call home.” With a variety of residences to choose from — including single-family homes, ranches, condos, vineyards, manufactured homes and vacant land — there are properties as near and as far from schools, stores and golf, recreational and sports facilities as residents desire. She encourages people investigating the Ramona housing market to call upon the services of a local realtor, because, “Living in Ramona is a quality of life second to none.” n

Community Library is a State-of-the-Art Facility — Ruth Lepper

A

state-of-the-art library opened in Ramona on Feb. 15, 2012, bringing thousands of books and other materials to the heart of the community. It is a welcoming gathering place not only for local residents, but also for visitors to town. The Friends of the Ramona Library maintains a used bookstore and provides a vast assortment of activities and events for adults and children, alike. Where else would you go for youngsters to develop self-confidence skills while reading to a pooch? “Paws to read” happens four times a month for 4- to 8-year-olds. There also are separate storytimes for toddlers and “bouncing babies.” Chess is popular with adults and

teens. A “music shop” is set up for teens on Friday afternoons. Help with homework assignments takes place Monday through Thursday afternoons. Exercise and dance classes include tai chi, zumba and Folklorico, among others. Crafts take over in many settings. Scrapbooking and card-making are popular with adults, while children engage in crafts set to holiday themes as well as at other times every month. A cooking club and book club meet for special interest groups. The Dick Wayman Technology Center features the latest resources in technical equipment, including a dozen computers, iPads, laptops and a 3-D printer. Ramona Community Library is located at 1275 Main St. It opens at 9:30 a.m. Monday through Saturday, with varied closing hours. n

Music, Rides and So Much Flair

Happening at the Country Fair — Tracy Rolling

P

ure fun is what Ramona Country Fair-goers can expect this year, when they enjoy three days of music, rides, activities, contests, vendors and more! “One of the most exciting things about this year’s fair is our new location,” said Sally Westbrook, committee chairperson for Ramona Chamber of Commerce, the event organizer. “The new location will be at the intersection of Highland Valley Road and Highway 67, next to the Ramona Monument. This will make the fair more accessible and draw attendance from people passing by.” In addition to a variety of thrilling carnival rides, a collection of vendor and craft booths will offer people a casual shopping experience. An assortment of fair foods and beverages, including a beer and wine garden, will be situated on site, near the main stage. “The areas will be separated, and under shade,” she said, adding that people will be close to the music.

The fair will showcase some real toetapping bands and performers. Farm Truck, Girl in the Middle and Gone Blonde will appeal to younger adults on Friday night, while a bluegrass festival will be featured Saturday afternoon. Southbound Jonny, a popular country-western band, and Fanny and the Atta Boys will swing into action Saturday evening, and Mexican Folklore dancers and mariachi musicians will entertain folks on Sunday, also dubbed “family day.” A photo contest and homemade canned goods competition will take place during scheduled fair times. Westbrook said, “Admission, contests, classes — including a linedancing class — and music are all free.” There is a charge of $5 per carload for parking, and a nominal fee for amusement rides. “This is a family-friendly event, fun for all ages. We hope people will come out and join in the fun!” The fair will take place July 30 through Aug. 2. Visit www.ramonachamber.com. n

here is so much to do in Old Town Ramona. Every week, local stores have a variety of events, from a mini-Doctor Who convention to yoga, Zumba and dancing, poetry, book signings, paintyour-own pottery classes, and special sales, concerts and entertainment. It’s always fun to stroll around Ramona’s original shopping district and show your family and friends the best of Ramona. While new businesses are popping up all over town, Old Town Ramona has seen amazing growth in the last few years. More new stores have opened, and many businesses have been spruced up with new paint, signs and siding. While antiques have always been a

draw for flatlanders and tourists, shopping, entertainment and dining are bringing in more new people each day. Quaint shops with books, clothing, antiques and art have visitors stopping to walk the around the Old Town neighborhood every weekend.

Not only have the tourists found a renewed interest in Main Street, but many locals have, too. During the holidays, stores stayed open late and decorated their windows. Many area residents discovered that they could do all of their holiday shopping in Ramona. This event, coupled with the “shop small” movement, seemed to breathe new life into our historic district.
Since then, shoppers have been coming out in larger numbers. Recently, the “Old Town Ramona” Facebook page ran a game where people posted items that could be found only by shopping in Old Town. Participants discovered that there is a yarn store, bookstore, clothing store, florist, local craft shop, coffee shop, theater, art See Shopping continued on page 36

Monument Greets Guests and Residents

E

mbracing the unique qualities of Ramona, a welcome monument was erected in 2008, on the corner of Dye Road and Highway 67, by local artist Leslie Souza, John Degenfelder and other members of the Ramona Trails Association (RTA), in collaboration with businesses and community supporters. Pictured in 2008, monument artist Leslie Degenfelder, a long-time Ramona Souza, right, and her husband, Cliff Fuerst, add the finishing touches. Ramona Home Journal File Photo resident and founder of the RTA, spearheaded the efforts to construct a symbol that would recognize characteristics of the community, including a raptor, a sun peeking through two mountaintops, grape leaves and a stunning horse. While Souza created the design and plasma-cut the metal, Degenfelder and other RTA volunteers attended approval meetings and solicited support by way of contributions and donated labor. Their leadership and the support of the community turned a dream into reality, resulting in a local landmark that has become known far and wide. n

ids throughout San Diego’s backcountry are prepping their animals for the Ramona Junior Fair, slated for July 25 to Aug. 2. The highlight event of these efforts by Future Farmers of America, Grange Club members and 4-H’ers will be Aug. 1, when more than 200 blue- and red-ribbon animals will be auctioned. “The auction is a culmination of the kids’ hard work to make some money they can put into their college funds,” said Robby Storton, president of the Ramona Junior Fair Board of Directors. “The auction made $183,272 last year.” He said work already has begun to get the grounds of the Ramona Outdoor Community Center ready. The fair board also relies heavily on input from a steering committee. “Even though food prices are up and animal availability is down this year, we feel we’ll still have the same amount of entries,” Storton predicted.

The 1980s

The 1990s

Featured competition is with cattle, swine, lamb and goats, however it doesn’t stop there. A smaller animal fair will include chickens, rabbits and dogs. They have even had alpacas and llamas in recent years. Curtis Martineau, who is board vice president and livestock supervisor, anticipates about 300 animals by the time registrations are completed.

“Entries are expected from Poway, Julian, Warner Springs and Valley Center,” in addition to local entries, Martineau said. “We’re trying to get more buyers through our website, where we give an estimated cost per pound.” Another auction, this time with pies, is slated for July 14. Storton said it is a major fundraiser for the Junior Fair operation. The ROCC is at 421 Aqua Ln. Visit www.ramonajuniorfair.com. n Photo by Ruth Lepper

A Melody of Murals – Tracy Rolling

If art were music, then the streets of Ramona would sound like a symphony. That’s because murals are decorating the town and creating a harmonious blend of colors and images reminiscent of yesteryear. The latest mural is located at 773 Main St. and unites the past with the present. It is a rendition of the historic Kenilworth Inn, previously named the Ramona Hotel. It was installed by artist Linda Luisi and is positioned on the Ramona Food and Clothes Closet building, where the Inn stood prior to being destroyed by fire in 1943. Other local murals are of the

legendary cowboy Casey Tibbs, the equine community, historic commerce, and an acoustic guitar on the music center. All of the murals have been organized and funded through Ramona H.E.A.R.T. A Picnic in the Park

Collier Park, That is!

here’s nothing like a picnic in the park, especially at a beautiful, wellmaintained location such as Collier County Park. Shaded by a variety of trees — including the California pepper, native oaks, palms and more — the park offers visitors welcome relief from the sun. In addition to picnic tables, benches and two good-sized gazebos, there are three covered play structures, each designed with a specific age group in mind. The newest tot-lot offers games and activities to stimulate a child’s mind, along with their gross and fine motor skills. A tennis court and brand-new, fullsize basketball court tempts sports enthusiasts of all levels to get out and have some fun. On the southeastern side of the park, a pebble path weaves through a native garden featuring abundant flowering and non-flower plants, as well as a mosaic tribute to the Armed Forces of America. The Blue Star Memorial By-Way was donated by Ramona Garden Club in June 2008, and is a stunning point of interest. The Boy Scouts and Girl Scouts of America have a small building on the property, and the Boys and Girls Club of Ramona organizes a variety of exciting and educational afterschool programs, including an

indoor soccer league. “The park is great,” said Simone McCune, Boys and Girls Club site supervisor. “We utilize it for more than 50 percent of our programs.” The park is also home to the annual Christmas Tree Lighting, community Easter Egg Hunt and a number of year-round activities. Collier County Park is open from 8 a.m. to sunset at 626 E. St., and is waiting to host your next picnic in the park. n

What to Expect From Area Wineries

dventure, breathtaking views and a welcoming smile are just a few of the qualities guests can expect when they visit any of the more than two-dozen Ramona-area wineries. The region has gained a reputation for producing top-quality, awardwinning wines, and it all begins with the harvest of full-bodied, locally grown grapes. With Ramona’s idyllic climate and picturesque setting, local tasting rooms offer connoisseurs an opportunity to explore a variety of Ramona valley wines. Bottled blends include Cabernet

40

Sauvignon, Merlot, Zinfandel, Syrah, Petite Sirah, Cabernet Franc, Muscat Canelli and others. From elegant, indoor spaces to cozy outdoor patios with exquisite views of rolling hillsides and natural wildlife, each tasting room provides a relaxing, comfortable atmosphere. Most keep weekend hours and are happy to accommodate special occasions. Friendly shuttle and tour services are an option, and are encouraged for larger parties where parking could be an issue. Some rooms will open during off-times by appointment, and most welcome small quantities of outside snacks. While visits are complimentary, wine samples are poured at a nominal fee. On average, they cost between $5 and $15 for one to six tastes, depending on location. Select wineries also offer additional tasting options, such as purchasing wine by the glass or bottle, See Area Wineries continued on page 42

Simple Rules for Wine and Food Pairings

he vast array of wines and flavors can make it challenging to select a bottle or two to accompany a meal. But one need not be an expert to find the right pairing. The following suggestions can help hosts and hostesses select wines to go with any menu or special occasion. Work from light to dark. Select lighter wines to accompany earlier courses before opting for deeper, richer wines as

the meal progresses. Opt for Sauvignon Blanc when you do not want the flavor of the wine to be overwhelmed by the food, as it pairs well with early courses that pack a flavorful punch. It is often recommended with sushi. See Simple rules continued on page 45

Match delicate seafood dishes with a light wine. Pinot Grigio or Chablis are delicately flavored and will pair nicely with seafood, while fish served in rich sauces may be better matched with a heartier Chardonnay. Make rosé your go-to wine when serving cheese. It is typically a safe bet when serving cheese because of its acidity and fruity character, offering the best of both worlds. Hearty meats, such as steaks and chops, pair well with rich reds, such as Cabernet Sauvignon, Malbec and Shiraz. Pinot Noir is a light-bodied red wine that has a full flavor and can work with many pasta dishes. Though some people follow a strict personal code regarding wine pairings, your personal tastes should dictate what you serve. Experimentation can yield an unexpected flavor combination that complements both the food and the wine. n

Hiking 101

Backcountry Basics

R

amona’s trails offer visitors a peaceful and pleasant experience. But if hikers are not properly prepared, they could face treacherous situations. Glen Morgan, vice president of the Ramona Trails Association, shares practical advice for new and experienced hikers, alike. “Bring a pint of water for every

hour you plan to be on the trail,” he said, adding that hikers should check weather conditions prior to an excursion. He references the county website, at www.sandiegocounty.gov/parks/hikes, in addition to www.ramonatrails.org, so that people can familiarize themselves with the trail and plan to hike at their appropriate level. “If you haven’t hiked in five years, don’t go to the top of Iron Mountain or Mount Woodson. Build up your hiking endurance slowly.” He cautions people to watch for snakes, and said, “Never put your feet or hands anywhere you haven’t visually inspected first. Snakes are just as afraid of you as you are of them.” Other suggestions include carrying a cell phone, hiking with a friend, and staying on the trail at all times. Besides urging people to wear appropriate clothing, such as broadbrimmed hats, proper shoes and sunscreen, he asks everyone to respect the backcountry motto and “Leave No Trace.” “That basically means don’t leave anything, but don’t take anything from the trail, either.” Dogs should be leashed and picked up after, and posted rules should be regarded. “Most of the trails in our area are pretty tame. They’re dirt paths, nice to walk and offer a good outdoor experience for nearly all levels of hikers.” n Massive boulders at Mount Woodson. Ramona Home Journal File Photo

Downtown Main Street

t’s an annual tradition when local children go door-to-door on Main Street and say, “Trick or treat!” to friendly merchants and business owners. Youngsters, accompanied by grownups, will head out on Friday, Oct. 30, the day before Halloween, because

weekday afternoons are safer than weekends when it comes to crossing the busy highway. The event is sponsored by Ramona Chamber of Commerce, and helps highlight the unique variety of our local merchants. n

Looking Ahead

s fall fades into winter, folks in the Valley of the Sun put on their brightest smiles and come together at these annual community events. The Ramona Chamber of Commerce Christmas Tree Lighting Dec. 5 will brighten up the holiday season with a tree lighting and visit from Santa Claus at Collier Park, followed by caroling, decorated storefronts, contests and activities on Main Street. Ramona Town Hall’s Traditional Christmas Dinner Dec. 12 is an

enjoyable event that evokes the fun and festivity of a bygone era. Tours abound in April, when local artists open their doors for the Open Studios Tour and Ramona Garden Club presents its Tour and Plant Sale. Immerse yourself in the past when Old West Days makes its annual appearance in early May, entertaining one and all with primitive encampments, old-time vendors, and gunslinger reenactment skits. n
