A
t the turn of the 20th century, the road leading into Santa Maria Valley from the west consisted of a dirt wagon trail, rutted and muddy during the winter and dusty silt in the summer. Because travelers could only find relief from the hot sun in the shady canyons and under the live oaks on Mussey Grade, land developer, D.C. “Charlie” Collier wanted to improve the appearance of the entrance to the valley by planting a double row of eucalyptus shade trees along the road. On April 28, 1909, the Cuyamaca News reported, “An adequate corps of Ramona citizens interested in the development and improvements of our valley set out approximately 2,000 sugar gum trees.” The trees were arranged in a
double row, “Bordering the stage road from the Earl School to the premises of James Booth.” With the exception of a half-mile tract of adobe east of Etcheverry that was impractical for planting, the boulevard of young trees measured six miles. According to the agreement at the time Collier donated the trees, the Ramona Improvement Company was to do the planting, and the County Board of Supervisors was to provide the care necessary for their growth. In 1931, more trees were planted about two miles from town by members of the American Legion, but by the turn of the 21st century, the colonnade only extended to Etcheverry Street. All of the other trees had long since disappeared, either due to drought, poor soil, disease or the woodsman’s axe. n

120 Years for Town Hall
O
n Feb. 22, 1894, Ramona Town Hall was dedicated to the community by Augustus and Martha Barnett. The building’s intended purpose was to serve as a hall for dances and a public library, and it became a primary gathering place for community events. Over the years, the facility has been home to a public high school, bank, courthouse, sheriff’s office, Chamber of Commerce, basketball court, and a
theater for films and live entertainment, among other uses. Following an arson fire in 1995, the building required major renovations. Due to the efforts of the Town Hall Board of Trustees and Honorary Mayor, the East and West wings have been restored, and the building is again being used as a meeting spot for local groups and fundraising events. n

For 28 years, local residents Fred and Vickie Christian have provided Christmas trees to families in and around the area. The owners of Pine Tree Acres, located at 620 Haverford Rd., say they may have started the business 28 years ago, “But it seems like just yesterday, and we still love it!” Excited to be part of the community’s Christmas tree tradition, the pinery offers choose-and-cut trees, potted trees, and a variety of fresh-cut fir trees, including Noble, grand, Fraser and Nordmann. They say selecting the perfect tree boils down to personal preference and available space. In addition to selling trees, they offer activities for the whole family, including cookie and ornament decorating, hot apple cider, a petting zoo and weekend pony rides. Even Santa joins in the weekend fun. Pine Tree Acres opens the day after Thanksgiving on Friday, Nov. 29, and remains open until Dec. 15. Weekday hours are from noon to 5 p.m., with weekend hours from 9 a.m. to 5 p.m.

Christmas trees will also be sold by Ramona Ag Boosters from Dec. 8 to 22 in the lot at Fifth and Main streets. Tree sales support the Ramona High School Future Farmers of America and local 4-H clubs. Hours are Monday through Friday, 5 to 8:30 p.m., and Saturday and Sunday, 9 a.m. to 8:30 p.m.
Christmas Tree Lighting
Other deep roots include the 21st Annual Christmas Tree Lighting, sponsored by the Ramona Chamber of Commerce. Scheduled for Saturday, Dec. 7, from 4 to 8 p.m., the town tree lighting will illuminate the season and dazzle both young and old. Taking place at Collier Park, located at 626 E. St., the family-friendly event
is expected to draw a handsome crowd by offering photos with Santa, live entertainment, a snow machine, vendor booths and food for purchase. Admission is free, and Chamber officials say the tree lighting is a wonderful way to welcome the Christmas season as a community. n

Local Crafters Sell at Town Hall Shows

bout 25 vendors show off their wares for the “In Your Own Backyard” craft shows that set up shop twice a year in Ramona Town Hall. Town Hall directors often turn out to give tours of the historic building. Vicki Franano, one of the organizers of the show, has her own specialty. She makes, or creates, “Renewed Beginnings.” She describes her craft as “upscale recycled and refurbished” items. “I make votive holders out of wine bottles,” she says. “Sometimes I actually make furniture out of old windows.” Other items for sale are handmade purses, jewelry and gift items, with everything one-of-a-kind. Franano, along with Susan Doughner and Lynette Harding, started the In Your Own Backyard craft shows about three years ago, so named because the first show was held in a backyard. B R A n d

Doughner makes memory boxes, and Harding’s craft is wire-wrapped jewelry with gemstones and sterling silver. productive, vital animals. There is more to see and do than ride a camel at this working farm. Walk the 34 acres, go on photo safari, or enjoy the hilarious tricks and antics of Nancy’s performing birds at her bird show, which she stages at the farm and takes on the road. The dairy will be hosting its Fourth Annual Pomegranate Day on Nov. 23 and 24, featuring a special performance of their famous bird show and fun for all who dare to feed the juicy fruit to the camels. Events begin at 1 p.m. Public tours are available once a month. Registration is recommended, though not required. Private tours can be arranged for small groups, school and Scout groups, and other interested parties. Training seminars are available for those interested in learning to care for camels. amona is one of the most unique and rural communities in San Diego County, according to Scott Norton, president of the Ramona Real Estate Association. He describes the quaint country town as centrally located between the beaches and mountains, literally at the heart of San Diego. “It has a nice, comfortable atmosphere that offers a well-balanced blend of country living,” he said. “Plus, it is much more affordable than other
areas in San Diego.” Boasting property amenities that often include room for horses and livestock, vineyards or orchards, private or club swimming pools, golf courses, and endless scenic views, Norton said, “It’s not just about the homes, it’s about the quality of life.” He says that there is a wide variety of activities for children, seniors and families, and that some of the local events include an annual Main Street Parade, rodeo, art and garden shows, among others. The program is open to boys from first grade at the Cub Scout level up to age 18. With the focus being on fun, parent and adult leaders guide and teach the boys hundreds of practical skills during meetings and outings. Country Roads
Pioneer Names Live On

everal of Ramona’s country roads were named in honor of the town’s pioneers. Let’s take a look at Ashley, Bargar, Barnett, Keyes and Telford roads. Often the location of a road has to do with where its namesake lived. George Ashley lived on the road that now bears his name. He was a noted gemologist and miner. Examples of his lapidary work are on display at the Smithsonian Institution in Washington, DC. Barnett Road may be the best known of this group because of its namesake,
Augustus Barnett. If only a smattering of local lore is known, it’s that Barnett was the man behind Ramona Town Hall. He had it built and donated it to the people of Ramona. George Telford was one of the original members of the Ramona Town Hall Board of Trustees. He was a carpenter who also helped build the Town Hall as well as First Congregational Church. Keyes Road is perhaps the most mispronounced name in the entire town, or even all of San Diego County. It is pronounced “Kize.” Remember that next time you are driving on it. George Keyes moved around the backcountry before settling in Ramona in 1900. Previously, he had ranches in Warner Springs, Julian and Banner. He also was a justice of the peace. Bargar Road, on the other hand, is quite often misspelled. It is with “ar” at the end, not “er” that has turned up on maps and business stationery. John Bargar is this road’s namesake. He was a leading entrepreneur in the early part of the 20th century and is credited with bringing water to Santa Maria Valley. Take note that of these five early residents, three of the men were named “George.” It’s a wonder there isn’t a George Road in Ramona. n

ith its rare display devoted to the history of vertical flight, Classic Rotors, located at Ramona Airport, is a must-see museum. Twenty-five helicopters representing those that have been flown for decades are positioned inside two hangars. Additionally, there are locations for restoration work and interesting memorabilia. After building and learning to fly his own helicopter, Mark DiCiero founded Classic Rotors in 1992. It is one of only four such museums giving attention to helicopter advancement, to honor rotorcraft pioneers and companies like Bell, Hughes and Robinson. They are constantly improving and expanding exhibits. In association with the Hiller Aviation Museum in San Carlos, Classic Rotors’ exhibits include

T
he Ramona H.E.A.R.T. Mural Project was established in December 2010 with one goal in mind — to make Ramona an even more beautiful place to work, live, visit and play. Mural Project President Elaine Lyttleton describes how the nonprofit organization helps industries and businesses raise funds to install themed
murals at various locations. Currently there are two murals. The first is of the renowned cowboy Casey Tibbs, located at the corner of Tenth and Main streets. The other, on the corner of Fourth and Main streets, is a welcome message from the equine community, showcasing a barrel racer, farmers on horseback, and Western and English riders. A third mural, sponsored by the Ramona Chamber of Commerce, is scheduled to be installed in December on the east wall of the old Ramona Pharmacy building, located at the corners of Seventh and Main streets. As many as 40 murals are projected to be painted around town, and projects in the fundraising stage include a San Diego Country Estates mural, a Ramona music industry mural and a historic rendering of the Kenilworth Inn. Hikes & Trails CEDAR CREEK FALLS Access: Trailhead is open at Thornbush Road in Ramona; $6 visitor use permit and photo ID are required — call 877-444-6777, ext. 2, or visit www.recreation.gov. Access also available from the Saddleback Trail parking area off Eagle Peak Road in Julian. Length: 5.2 miles round-trip. Return hike is more than 1,000 feet uphill and challenging. DOS PICOS COUNTY PARK Access: From Highway 67 (Main Street) in Ramona, take Mussey Grade Road, continue 1.1 mile, turn right on Dos Picos Park Road to park entrance. Length and Elevation: Nature trail length is about 0.5 mile, 1,506 feet elevation. RAMONA GRASSLANDS PRESERVE Access: Highland Valley Road off Highway 67. Trailhead and staging area are east of Archie Moore Road. Length and Elevation: 4-mile-long loop trail on 480 acres in the western portion of a 3,521-acre preserve. HOLLY OAKS PARK AND TRAIL Access: From Highway 67, turn on Dye Road to the Holly Oaks Staging Area on the south side of Dye Road at Southern Oak Road. Length and Elevation: 2 miles one way, 1,430 feet to 1,480 feet. Mt. Gower Open Space Preserve Access: From Highway 67, take 10th Street (becomes San Vicente Road) south 6 miles into San Diego Country Estates. Turn left at Gunn Stage Road, go 1.8 miles to the entrance of Mt. Gower Open Space Preserve. Restrooms and drinking fountain at staging area. Length and Elevation: 4.8 miles of trails, 1,625 feet to 2,650 feet.
BARNETT RANCH PRESERVE Access: From Highway 67, turn south on San Vicente Road/10th Street to Deviney Lane, then turn right. Length: 4 miles of multi-use trails include Valley View Trail, Overlook Trail, Rattlesnake Trail and Oak Loop Trail. Ramona Community Park Access: From Main Street (Highway 78), turn north on Fifth Street, right on Aqua Lane, and take third driveway on right. Length and Elevation: 5 miles of trails, 1,425 feet to 1,515 feet. Mount Woodson Trail Access: From Highway 67, go north on Archie Moore Road 1 mile to a fork in the road, then go left onto a one-way street to the staging area on the right. Hike back toward Highway 67 to the trailhead at Mt. Woodson Golf Club. Length and Elevation: 11 miles of trails, 1,000 feet to 2,400 feet. SANTA YSABEL PRESERVES Access: Take Highway 78 into Santa Ysabel and turn north onto Highway 79. Trailhead is 1.5 miles north of Santa Ysabel. Parking available along Highway 79. Trails open year-round, seven days a week at 8 am, closing fall and winter at 5 pm or spring and summer at sunset. Closed after rainfall or snow. Parading Down Main Street

amona Rodeo weekend marks the time when spectators can enjoy a day at the parade. People will be lined up on the sidewalks down Main Street on Saturday, May 17, to get a front-row seat to watch the parade that starts at 10 a.m. Participants dressed in costumes can be seen on foot; in cars, floats and tractors; and on horses, marching down Main Street, smiling and waving to the
cheering crowd. The parade participants, ranging from Miss Ramona and her court to Bob the Great Dane from All About Fun RV, will show their hometown spirit. Other sights to see include military marching bands, the Al Bahr Shriners, antique trucks and tractors, and beautiful equestrian entries, to name a few. About 100 entries are expected. ne might say the hills of Ramona are alive with the sound of music. That’s because local artists and topname entertainers are pouring their heart and sounds into the community.

On Sat., Dec. 14, former major league baseball player and longtime musician Tim Flannery will perform at Leahy’s Cheers, located at 2475 Main St. A week later, singer-songwriter Steve Poltz will celebrate Cheers’ 10th Annual Christmas Show. In December, the local middle and elementary school bands will make a joyful noise, and in the New Year, three special performances organized by the Ramona Concert Association are sched-
uled for Jan. 25, March 8, and April 5. Information about performers is available at www.ramonaconcerts.com. San Diego Country Estates Par Lounge offers live entertainment on most weekends, and has hosted bands such as Classic Buzz, Black Canyon and Steel Horse. Getting Ready for the Rodeo

rab your hat and boots for the 34th annual Ramona Rodeo, May 16, 17 and 18. The Professional Rodeo Cowboys Association-sanctioned event includes bareback riding, saddle bronc riding, team roping, tie-down roping, steer wrestling, barrel racing, bull riding and mutton busting. “We will have mutton busting at all three performances,” says Joani Georgeson, rodeo director. “It was such a hit last year, we just have to have it back and get the little guys involved.” Kids ages 4 to 6 years old hold on for dear life aboard un-sheared sheep. Each contestant will win a special “Bustin’ buckle,” donated by Justin Boots. Kids must wear a Justin protective helmet and body pads to compete. There will be a mechanical bull riding competition Friday night that anyone can enter. Entertainment showcased on Friday night is free. The theme is Urban Cowboy, and will offer karaoke and a dance. Saturday night, a live band will be featured along with a dance that is free. Sunday morning kicks off Cowboy Church at 9 a.m. at the rodeo arena. 60
The rodeo offers a wonderful Kids Day on Sunday from noon to 2 p.m. The first 200 youngsters under the age of 11 get a free cowboy or cowgirl gift. Vendors will be stationed in the newly designed free spectator area, which means anyone can visit to browse and shop without paying an entrance fee. Hold on to your hats, because Andy Stewart will be the rodeo announcer. He was in the top five for PRCA Announcer of the Year the past few years. The Ramona Rodeo broke a record last year, with the contestant entry count at 319. This is compared to 276 entries in 2012. According to Georgeson, the increase is due to the fact that Ramona is a beautiful rodeo park, and the cowboys and cowgirls are appreciated and catered to with food, snacks, a private rest area, chiropractor and private rodeo seating. Performances are in the Ramona Outdoor Community Center, Fred Grand Arena, at 421 Aqua Ln. Friday and Saturday, gates open at 6 p.m. and the performance is at 7:30 p.m. Sunday, Kids Day starts at noon, rodeo gates open at 1 p.m. and the performance starts at 2:30 p.m. Visit www.ramonarodeo.net. n

Library Grows with the Community
R
amona Community Library first opened in 1894, and became an official member of the San Diego County Library system on May 26, 1913, shortly after the county library was founded. The local library has had several homes over the years. It moved from Ramona Town Hall in February 1939, to a large room on Main Street rented from the Bargar family. In 1956, the building was sold and the rent
increased, so a move to 619 Main St. was made on June 30, 1956. On Feb. 6, 1973, the library moved to 1406 Montecito Rd., and as the community grew, additions to the building were made. In 1985, Friends of the Ramona Library was established to promote fundraising and community support, which helped support the building of the current facility, which opened at 1275 Main St. on Feb. 15, 2011. n
