Hawk Watch

earts are sure to soar at the sight of hawks, falcons and eagles during the annual Hawk Watch every Saturday through January and February. Hawk Watch will take place rain or shine at Begent Ranch, 18528 Highland Valley Rd., where as many as 19 species

Concert Association Presents a Musical Variety

he Ramona Concert Association is halfway through its 2015-16 season, with two more concerts on the schedule. Performing Feb. 20 will be classical pianist James D’Leon, an official Steinway artist who has won countless national and international piano competitions and performed at Carnegie Hall. On April 9, the 17-member Coastal Cities Jazz Band comes to town, considered one of the finest big band groups James D’Leon will take in Southern the stage Feb. 20. amona Old West Days brings the past to the present in scenes that recreate how Americans lived more than 100 years ago, complete with character portrayals and authentic furnishings and details. The event is open to the public from 9 a.m. to 3 p.m. Saturday and Sunday, April 30 and May 1, offering skits and re-enactments

San Diego Country Estates A Community Designed for Family Living

.A. (Ray) Watt began developing his new family/recreational community near Ramona in 1970. The town’s population then was but about 5,000. His new development would be named San Diego Country Estates and eventually be home to about 10,000. Situated on 3,250 acres of San Vicente Valley, it is about six miles southeast of 10th and Main streets. Watt was a renowned California civic leader and a widely acclaimed builder, with several national builderof-the-year awards. He was attracted by the valley’s ambiance, topography, climate and proximity to the smalltown environment of Ramona. It was also close enough for residents to

enjoy San Diego’s urban advantages. It seemed ideal for wholesome family living, and Watt made a momentous decision. He bought the land, made the commitment and dug in to develop a new community. The plan features 1,300 acres for open space and recreational development. That constitutes nearly half (42 percent) of the total land, which the homeowners would own and operate. There would be 36 miles of trails. No massive grading for residential sites would be allowed; homes would be designed to fit the land. All utilities would be undergrounded. The San Vicente Golf Course was ready for play, with clubhouse facilities, tennis courts, swimming pools and two equestrian centers in full operation. A $100,000 hunter/jumper grand prix was held at the International Equestrian Center in November 1972, and the

famous Bobby Riggs vs. Margaret Court Battle of the Sexes tennis match was held on club courts and seen on television in nine nations on Mother’s Day 1973. The family-friendly goals that Watt set for the San Vicente Valley were met. More than 3,400 lots and condos were essentially sold out by 1980. The result has been the low-density, environmentally sensitive SDCE residential community that has proven to appeal to a strong home-buying family market and has thrived since. n Chuck LeMenager was a member of the Watt team that developed SDCE and is author of “Off The Main Road, Revisited,” a history of San Vicente and Barona, from which this is excerpted. He has been a valley resident and active in SDCE Association affairs since the early 1970s. His other local history books include “Ramona & Round About” Second Edition, and “Julian City and Cuyamaca Country.”

Cruising on Main Street is a Festive Event

hat started out as a casual cruise down Ramona’s main drag on a Thursday night has turned into a full-blown parade. Well, maybe not exactly “full-blown,” as there are no bands or clowns. What Ramona American Graffiti Cruise does have are about 200 vintage and specialized vehicles of all kinds driving up and down Main Street every Thursday night from spring to fall. It starts about 7 p.m. at Etcheverry Street

with the vehicles cruising east to Sixth Street, then turning around and going back again — and again — and again. Classic cars tend to dominate the

parade, but there are also many oldermodel pickup trucks, motorcycles, tractors, vans and commercial vehicles driving along Main Street. While Ramona car enthusiasts are well-represented, others come from as far away as National City, Fallbrook and Temecula, as well as the closer communities of Escondido, Poway, Santee and El Cajon. The crowds of spectators continued to grow each week, often numbering between 1,000 and 2,000 people turning out to watch the parade. It’s also become a common gathering time, as folks get together with friends, new and old. riving into Ramona from the west, you’ll see a “Welcome to Ramona” monument sculpted by local artist Leslie Souza that depicts the rural lifestyle and serves as an introduction to a fantastic art community. Other sculptures are located at Salerno Winery, featuring a more contemporary style, while Souza’s smaller piece in front of Ramona Library is reflective of the grasslands. There are six murals around town that further demonstrate the community’s love of art, with more

being prepared for other locations. “The murals depict the history, culture and character of our diverse town,” said Judy Nachazel, president of the Ramona Art Guild. “The Community Room at the library has juried and non-juried shows and workshops.” Nachazel suggests that while at the library, check out the stained glass windows designed by internationally known artist James Hubbell. “The library also has a permanent collection of art and hosts revolving art shows by local artists,” she added. scheduled throughout the year. An Art and Wine Festival is held the first week in November. Ramona’s Open Studios Tour, sponsored by Ramona Chamber of Commerce, is held the second weekend in April. The latter showcases artwork by as many as 20 exceptional local artists and craftspeople who open their private workspaces and studios. The Olde Ramona Hotel Gallery offers monthly exhibits, with a reception to meet the featured artists. The gallery sponsors an open juried show displaying work by artists throughout San Diego County every October. The Art Center on Main Street offers quality art education and hosts art shows several times a year. Nachazel added that there will be a new addition to the Ramona art scene when the nonprofit 2Create Gallery opens in the spring. It is currently undergoing remodeling to become a community art center and art gallery. Molly Jaeger-Begent, owner of 2Create Gallery, said, “My husband and I bought this building and are remodeling it for a gallery to open March 1.” Ramona’s art colony has grown in

The Backcountry is Home to Elusive Wildlife — Tracy Rolling

hile the Ramona wildlife is not made up of lions, tigers or bears, that doesn’t mean people won’t be saying, “Oh my!” when they spot a native creature.

Skunks, opossums, bobcats and coyotes are just a few of the native wildlife found in Ramona, says Ali Crumpacker, director of The Fund for Animals Wildlife Center. Crumpacker explains that people are more likely to see evidence of

animals than an animal itself. “You might hear the coyotes or smell the skunks,” she says. Wild animals are typically elusive, but they leave behind confirmation with their tracks and scat. Mule deer are among the animals seen on occasion, but they don’t represent a large population in Ramona. On the flip side, that’s a good thing. Especially since they’re a main food source for cougars, also referred to as mountain lions. “Most are located in Poway, but they are few and far between.” She says wild turkeys are not native to the area but were brought in for hunting. “Raccoons congregate around water and like to wash their food before they eat it.” She recommends that if you see a wild animal, and it’s not doing anything destructive, just enjoy the view. “If it’s causing a problem, try hazing it. Yell at it, squirt it with a hose, or try to scare it off. Then be sure to address whatever they were attracted

to in the first place.” If it’s trash, she suggests finding ways to secure the lid. For skunks tampering with a garden, she says, “They’re not attracted to the flowers — it’s grubs they’re going after.” She recommends beneficial nematodes, a living microscopic organism that can be purchased at most home and garden supplies. As far as native birds, red-tail hawk and barn owls are some of the more common species. “There is also an abundance of seabirds, including various herons. Although we seem far from the ocean, we’re not, by line of sight.” For those who see an animal and something doesn’t make sense, she suggests taking a picture of it. Length: 4-mile-long loop trail on 480 acres in the western portion of a 3,521-acre preserve. HOLLY OAKS PARK AND TRAIL Access: From Highway 67, turn on Dye Road, proceed to the Holly Oaks Staging Area on the south side of Dye Road at Southern Oak Road. Length and Elevation: 2 miles one way, 1,430 feet to 1,480 feet. BARNETT RANCH PRESERVE Access: 1500 Deviney Ln. From Highway 67, turn south on San Vicente Road/10th Street to Deviney Lane, then turn right. Length: 4 miles of multi-use trails include Valley View Trail, Overlook Trail, Rattlesnake Trail and Oak Loop Trail. Mount Woodson Trail Access: From Highway 67, go north on Archie Moore Road 1 mile to a fork in the road, then go left onto a one-way street to the staging area on the right. Hike back toward Highway 67 to the trailhead at Mt. Woodson Golf Club. Length and Elevation: 11 miles of trails, 1,000 feet to 2,400 feet. CEDAR CREEK FALLS Access: Trailhead is open at Thornbush Road in Ramona; visitor use permit and photo ID are required — call 877-444-6777 or visit www.recreation.gov. Access also available from the Saddleback Trail parking area off Eagle Peak Road in Julian. Length: 5.2 miles round-trip. Return hike is more than 1,000 feet uphill and challenging. SANTA YSABEL PRESERVES Access: Take Highway 78 into Santa Ysabel and turn north onto Highway 79. Trailhead is 1.5 miles north of Santa Ysabel. Parking available along Highway 79. Trails open year-round, seven days a week at 8 am, closing fall and winter at 5 pm or spring and summer at sunset. Closed after rainfall or snow. ‘Swede’ Nelson A Colorful Character of Ramona’s Past — Darrell Beck

hose who knew him would never forget him. Carl Gustov Nelson, or “Swede” Nelson, as he affectionately became known, emigrated from Sweden to Winnipeg, Canada, where he worked as a railway gang laborer. He then went to Oregon, where he became a lumberjack. He was a huge, powerful man who looked strong enough to take down a tree with his bare hands, but he was also gentle and good. He married Hedwig “Hedy” Matilda Anderson, also of Swedish heritage. They came to Ramona in 1941, where they worked side by side on their property on the southeast corner of Cedar Street and Highway 78. They called the place “Valhalla” and erected a stone monument there to signify the ranch name. They immediately got the attention of the neighbors after clearing the land of tall brush, stacking it in a huge pile and burning it. The great fire brought out the fire department and about half the town to help, for which the Nelsons made amends by putting on a special Swedish spread and inviting everybody to attend. Over the years, the Nelsons built a very prosperous chicken business on 46

their land, where the Garcia family also lived as hired hands. The Nelsons had no children, but the Garcia children became like their own. As a result of this rare combination of culture and language, a new dialect was discovered, as Carl attempted to teach English with a Swedish accent to the Spanish-speaking Garcia. The result was an unusual language, especially when translated by Garcia, but it served the purpose. Civic-minded, Carl was a director of the Ramona Chamber of Commerce, a prominent citizen who helped organize the Ramona Municipal Water District and bring imported water to Ramona for the first time. He was also elected to a seat on the first RMWD Board of Directors and became president of the Breakfast Club. He was an accomplished public speaker and a prolific writer, publishing two books in Swedish. Carl and Hedy were the epitome of the “American dream.” They worked hard, they prospered and they made their mark before God and country. n Darrell Beck is a local historian and 75-year resident of Ramona. He is the author of “On Memory’s Back Trail” and writes articles about local history for Ramona Home Journal.

Town Hall

On Feb. 22, 1894, Ramona Town Hall was dedicated to the community by Augustus and Martha Barnett. It became a primary gathering place and home to a public high school, library, bank, courthouse, sheriff’s office, Chamber of Commerce, basketball court, dance venue, and theater for films and live entertainment, among other uses. In the years since a 1995 arson fire required the building to undergo major renovations, the East and West wings have been restored and are again being used as a meeting spot for local groups and community events. n

With a mission to honor veterans every day, the post was established in the 1950s and named after local Bronze Star recipient Archie G. McArthur. “Our priority happens outside these walls,” Post Commander Doug Scholl said of the local nonprofit organization

that has nearly 650 members and two auxiliaries. The Post offers meals three times a week that are open to the public at 2247 Kelly Ave. “We have one of the most active cooking schedules in San Diego County,” said Scholl. A fish-and-chips dinner is served from 6 to 8 p.m. the first Friday of every month, with burgers and fries served on the other Fridays. On Saturday nights, the featured entree rotates among prime rib, baby-back ribs, an Iowa pork meal and the chef’s choice. Reservations are recommended by calling 760-789-7888. Breakfast is served every Sunday from 9 to 11 a.m. and alternates between French toast, steak and eggs, pancakes and omelets. All meals are served while supplies last, and a nominal fee is collected at the door.

Twice a year, they raise funds through the Buddy Poppy program, where donations are accepted in exchange for the little red flowers that symbolize the lives lost during World War I. “The money goes directly to help widows, orphans, active duty and their spouses,” said Scholl. In addition to an “Adopt a family for Christmas” program, the Post celebrates our nation’s freedom with a free Fourth of July picnic and barbecue, open to the public from 1 to 4 p.m.

Showing support to community youth, they help the Ramona High School NJROTC program and annually donate a $1,000 scholarship to a graduating high school student. They also charter Boy Scouts of America Troop 768 and honor teachers, firefighters, EMTs and law enforcement officers by naming outstanding individuals on a local and state level. “By partnering with the community, we can build a strong network and be a valuable resource for our veterans, and our neighborhood.” n

Honoring Our Veterans

hree Memorial Day ceremonies on May 30 will be presented by local Veterans of Foreign Wars Post 3783, to honor past and present veterans and activeduty military. The first service will be at 10 a.m. at Nuevo Memory Gardens, 532 Ash St., where veterans’ graves will be marked with individual American flags the Friday before. Other ceremonies will follow at the World War

II Memorial at the ball field on Ninth Street, and at the Vietnam War Memorial at Schwaesdall Winery, 17677 Rancho de Oro Dr., off Highway 67. After the services, a picnic will be held at the VFW Post at 2247 Kelly Ave. Look for Buddy Poppy donation points at stores around town in advance of the holiday, with proceeds to benefit local veterans and the VFW. Ramona Junior Fair puts the spotlight on 4-H, FFA and Grange from July 30 to Aug. 6, with youth crafts and home economics displays, live animals and the famous livestock auction, all set at the Ramona Junior Fairgrounds, 431 Aqua Ln. Tour Springtime Gardens

Seven gardens will be open to guests of the 2016 Garden Tour and Plant Sale, presented April 30 by Ramona Garden Club. Tour tickets will be sold at the plant sale in the parking lot of Ramona Library, 1275 Main St.,
