usic, lights, sleigh rides, entertainment and more — it’s all part of the package when the 24th annual Christmas Tree Lighting takes place this Saturday, Dec. 3, presented by the Ramona Chamber of Commerce. “It’s the perfect opportunity for us to come together as a community at this special time of year,” says event organizer Lezley Knott, of the Chamber. Activities in Old Town Ramona are set to take place from 5 to 8 p.m., rain or shine. At 6 p.m., Santa Claus will conduct the ceremonial lighting of the Christmas tree at the Guy B. Woodward Museum, and then move to

and motorcycle show, and sleigh rides on the famous motorized sleigh owned by Bill and Judy Bryant.

“We have Mountain View Community Church singing carols, Thomsen Learning Center preschool will do a presentation, the Ramona Del Sol group will be dancing in front of the stage, and Ramona/Julian Academy of Dance will perform,” says Knott. Main Street will be closed between Sixth and Seventh streets during the event. Knott says that there will be a big stage for singers and dancers, and a local toy drive and more performers will be stationed on the street. Many drivers who participate in the Ramona American Graffiti Cruise during the summer are planning to bring their beautiful rides to the event. Cruise night founders Jerry and Kristy Keller put

out an invitation to all, and announced plans to parade downtown as a group at about 4:30 p.m. They also encouraged cruisers to bring toys for the toy drive. Many local merchants are participating in the Find the Elf contest, and one lucky elf-seeker will receive a gift basket valued at more than $400. The elf search is scheduled to begin at 3 p.m., and an elf poster will identify participating businesses. And since many stores will be open on Main Street during the tree lighting event, guests can not only have fun, but also take care of their gift shopping at the same time. A Hiker’s Paradise

urrounded by rolling fields with chaparral and oaks, and featuring a stunning view of Ramona in the distance, the Ramona Grasslands Preserve offers a gorgeous setting for hiking. More than 3,000 expansive acres of beautiful land make up the preserve, located off of Highland Valley Road. This trail is popular with hikers, bikers and equestrians. With a large parking lot, there is enough room for horse trailers and larger vehicles.

A well-maintained dirt path leads hikers to a four-mile loop. Unlike the hikes previously mentioned in the “A Hiker’s Paradise” series, the Grasslands is great for many skill levels, and I would consider it novice-level in terms of difficulty. With a gentler change in elevation and wide path, it is a good option for those who are just beginning; for someone searching for a less-intense, more relaxing trail; and for trail runners who want a great workout. Ambling along the path, visitors are apt to get a good view of the

cattle that use this area for grazing, and have a chance to catch a glimpse of hawks soaring over the landscape. The trail is a wonderful place to view the area’s wildlife. According to the County of San Diego’s website, www.sdparks.org, “Many rare animals make their homes in this area. Birdwatchers are drawn to the grasslands for the spectacular number of hawks that spend their winters here. Santa Maria Creek, which runs through the grasslands, adds to the biodiversity.” Several species of snakes have been spotted, so make sure to keep

your distance should you come across one. Since this area is a preserve, it is important to stay on the designated trail to avoid harming any of the delicate species that call this area home. As the trail is not too difficult or rocky, it is a nice option for those who would like to include their canine companions. Due to the breadth and cleanliness of the path, See Ramona Grasslands Preserve continued on page 20

Manning Speaks Softly and Carries a Big Cross By Ann Reilly Cole ~ the journal

itchell Manning started walking west just over a year ago with a simple message. His starting point was Jacksonville, Fla., but recently, he captured the attention of backcountry residents when he was spotted making his way up Banner Grade and around Julian, and traveling down the mountain and through Ramona, ending his journey in Mission Beach, where he cooled his tired feet in the Pacific Ocean and finally laid down the cross he had carried 3,000 miles across the United States. And his message? “I wanted to do something to tell people about Jesus, but I’m not very good at talking with people,” Manning said. “I thought this would be a good example.” Soft-spoken with bright blue eyes and a fair complexion tanned from traveling through the desert, Manning, who hales from Tennessee, “preaches” the gospel in the quiet benevolence he holds for everyone in his company, without using weighty words to match his 100-pound load. Over the course of 377 days, he relied on his own wits and the kindness of strangers to overcome obstacles and fulfill his personal

mission to share the gospel in this physical and visual way. Half of the time, he traveled as a guest,

accepting whatever hospitality and accommodations were offered in the homes of people he met. A third of the time, he pitched his tent and camped under the night sky. The rest of the time, he bunked in hotels. Many people connected with him in a heartfelt way during his travels and signed his cross as a remembrance of what they shared. Manning, who marked his 28th birthday during his journey, had the

idea to take up his cross about 10 years ago, just after he graduated from Tennessee Technological University with a degree in computer science and math. People in his church convinced him to wait a bit before he acted on his initial impulse. Trusting in their counsel, he put it off until he felt the time was right. He set off with enough funds to last the six months he expected it would take, but soon realized that his timeline was too ambitious. Also

came the realization that he had funds far in excess of what he needed. “I’ve given away more than I’ve started with, and I still have plenty,” he said. During his travels, he met

people who helped him in countless ways. Those he met on his birthday overheard a phone conversation between him and his dad about a camera that he wanted. They pitched in with others to buy

the camera as a gift. Another time, just as he was craving a piece of fruit, someone offered him a pear. In Texas, he left his cross in a park while taking a couple of days to rest at a nearby

home. When he returned, his cross was gone. A Facebook posting started a communitywide search for the cross, which was never found. Word of the search reached a cabinetmaker, who came forward to make him a new one. A bit sad for the loss of the signatures on the cross left behind, Manning pressed on with a solid sense of the goodness of others and room for a whole lot more signatures. “I’ve learned there are a lot more good people in the world than you think just by

watching the news,” he said. Though he never seriously considered quitting, there were hard days, but he remembered that God is his strength and would see him through, if He willed it. After reaching his destination on Nov. 4, Manning returned home to Tennessee by train, and his cross was shipped separately, thanks again to the generosity of strangers. But those whom he met along the way know that his journey will surely continue. n

A Season of Giving By Angela McLaughlin ~ the journal

T

he holidays are drawing closer, and this celebratory time of year is a wonderful time to give back to the community! For some residents, the holidays may be difficult, and being on the receiving end of generosity from other community members could be just what they need to feel a bit of that holiday cheer.

This season, take one of the many local opportunities to show your kindness and spread that holiday happiness by joining other residents, organizations and businesses in donating to those in need! Kamps Holiday Toy Drive Kamps Propane is offering an incentive for people to donate toys for children in the Ramona area. For those who bring in a new, unwrapped toy — with a receipt — Kamps will award double the toy value, for up to $50 in propane. Visit Kamps at 1000 Olive St. through Dec. 12. Call 760-789-7079. Share Your Christmas Ramona Food and Clothes Closet’s Share Your Christmas Program has started collecting donations of new, unwrapped toys, nonperishable food

and financial gifts. Ramona Food and Clothes Closet assists families in Ramona, Julian, Santa Ysabel, Ranchita, Warner Springs and Borrego Springs — making sure that all donations stay in the area. The program supplies low-income households with holiday food and a new toy and stockingstuffer for each child. Donations may be brought to the drive-through donation lane behind the building, located at 773 Main St., or look for marked bins at many participating businesses throughout town. A number of schools will also be participating in collecting donations for the program. Applications to participate in the toy and food giveaway will be accepted Dec. 1, from 9:30 a.m. to 1:30 p.m. and 5 p.m. to 8 p.m., and Dec. 2 and 3, from 9:30 a.m. to 1:30 p.m., at the organization’s service office. Distribution day will be Friday, Dec. 16, from 10 a.m. to 4 p.m. Call 760-789-4458 or visit www.foodandclothescloset.org. Relief for Ramona Roadways

oyce Meyer, an inspirational speaker, once said, “Patience is not the ability to wait, but the ability to keep a good attitude while you are waiting.” That’s exactly what Ramona commuters are learning with each new construc-

tion zone they encounter. In May, California Department of Transportation (Caltrans) crews started work on State Route 67 at the intersection of Dye and Highland Valley roads. The project is a partnership between Caltrans and the County of San Diego, with a vision to improve local roadways and reduce future

congestion. The intersection was chosen because of the substantial backups in both directions created by signal lights. It’s also considered a major throughway to neighboring communities and is heavily traveled during morning and afternoon rush hours. Cameras have been

installed at various points during the construction phase to identify vehicles in lanes and adjust the signal cycles accordingly. The project will widen SR-67 from two lanes to four in the immediate vicinity and reconfigure the intersection so that there are additional left-turn lanes onto the

highway, from both Dye and Highland Valley. Caltrans District 11 media relations officer Steven Shultz said the new lanes will better accommodate the wide turning radius of commercial trucks and decrease traffic delays by as much as 80 percent. Other improvements

include adding an equestrian trail to the northern side of the roads, installing push buttons for pedestrian crossings, upgrading drainage and creating concrete curbs that comply with the Americans with Disabilities Act. The project has an estimated $14 million price tag, and funds are being provided by the State Highway Operation and Protection Program, as well as San Diego County Transportation Impact Fees and TransNet. Most road renovations have occurred during lowcommuter times between 11 p.m. and 5 a.m. Despite temporary delays, one-way traffic control has been in place, and portable signs in both directions caution motorists to slow down and

inform them of upcoming road closures. Once all of the improvements are made, the signal cycles will return to their pre-construction function, and the transition time between green lights will be shortened, allowing more vehicles to pass through the intersection with less congestion. The SR-67 Dye/Highland Valley project is scheduled to be completed by mid-2017. On the flip side, after more than two years of construction, the San Vicente Road Improvement Project has been completed. Traffic delays were minimized, and motorists exhibited caution, thanks in part to a number of agencies, including the County of San Diego,

Flatiron Construction, San Diego Sheriff’s Department, California Highway Patrol and Cal Fire. New plans for SR-67 are in the works with the channelizers project. Channelizers are safety barricades designed to guide traffic and protect both vehicles and pedestrians. Caltrans will host an open house on Dec. 7, from 4 to 7 p.m., at Olive Peirce Middle School, to introduce the project that will install channelizers along the center lines of SR-67, north of Santa Maria Avenue, to Shady Oaks Drive. Additionally, Caltrans will erect three changeable message signs that will notify motorists of traffic conditions on northbound SR-67 at Winter Gardens Drive, northbound SR-67 between

Scripps Poway Parkway and Poway Road, and southbound SR-67 just north of Poway Road. Shultz invites the public to attend the open house, and suggests that people stay up to date by following Caltrans on Twitter and Facebook. Emergency evacuations are often an issue, even when roadways are not under construction. Michele Clock, Communications Officer for the Public Safety Group of the County of San Diego, said, “The county continues to analyze additional emergency evacuation possibilities for the community of Ramona.” She explained that in the event of an emergency, law enforcement will partner with local fire officials to

ensure the safe evacuation for all residents. “It’s important for everyone to know the quickest evacuation routes out of their community and create a disaster plan with their families,” she said, adding that people should have a predesignated meeting place and an established means for communications should phone lines be down. To learn about preparing for an emergency, visit www.readysandiego.org. Shultz advises motorists to “Slow for the Cone Zone,” and appreciates everyone’s patience as construction crews bring some muchneeded relief to Ramona roadways. n

Bicycling Ramona with CC Cycles By Angela McLaughlin ~ the journal

C

lark Cathcart is not just “into bicycles” — he lives and breathes them. For nearly 40 years, Cathcart has had a passion for the hobby. In fact, he has made it more than a hobby — he’s made it his life’s work. As the owner and sole proprietor of CC Cycles on Main Street, Cathcart is soon to celebrate his first anniversary of owning the shop. At the young age of 11, he began working part time for Kirk’s Bike Shop, the forerunner of CC Cycles. It was where his passion for bikes grew. “I loved mechanical things,” Cathcart says. “And I needed transportation.” This love and need are what initially brought him into the business, which since then has grown into a lifestyle. After many years of working for the shop’s previous owner, Kirk Newell, Cathcart purchased the business he loves and rebranded it with a new name. “I enjoy all aspects, from mountain bikes to BMX. I just enjoy riding, period.” And even though he has a shop to run, he says, “I go riding whenever I can squeak out 30 minutes or so to get on the trail.”

Left, Clark Cathcart, owner of CC Cycles. Above, CC Cycles offers products for sale and operates a repair shop and service Photos by Angela McLaughlin center.

Cathcart’s dedication and care for the town where he was born and raised shows through his work. “I plan on being here until I retire. The shop is well established, and I’ve been here through all the ups and downs. I’ve been here so long that

I’m seeing the third generation — grandparents bringing their grandkids in to get bikes.” He says his biggest focus is on the youngsters. “It is getting people the right products and getting kids on the right bikes.” Watching people ride and inspiring others to go out on the trails is what it is all about for Cathcart. “I just want people to get out there and be active,” he says. “I go

out to the BMX track three days a week. Seeing kids out there, at three and four years old, with no training wheels — it just warms my heart.” When he has an opportunity to ride any of his own bikes, five of which he uses on a regular basis, he likes to hit his favorite trail, Black Mountain in Pamo Valley. For those just starting out, Cathcart says that the Ramona Grasslands Preserve and Barnett Ranch Preserve are great places to check out. Cathcart loves helping people find their next — or first — bicycle. “The most important parts of finding the right bike are comfort, fit and what the bike is going to be used for.” Cathcart invites everyone to stop by CC Cycles during the Ramona Chamber of Commerce Christmas Tree Lighting on Dec. 3. The store will be open late, with special deals for the holidays. For those who are ready to take their bicycle out of storage, CC Cycles’ service and repair shop may be just what the doctor ordered to get your bike functional and back on the road or trail, no matter what kind of bicycle it may be. “I cater to everything,” Cathcart says. “That’s why my slogan is, ‘All things bicycle.’” n

In 1823, Spaniards lost control of Alta California when Mexico won its independence from Spain. Then in 1833, Mexico ratified the Act of Secularization that in effect abolished the power of the Padres, which had previously held the land in trust for the Indians. brief period of Mexican land grants. The first Mexican land grants at Agua Caliente consisted of two contiguous parcels totaling 44,322 acres. In 1836, Silvestre de la Portilla received a grant of 17,634 acres to the south called “Rancho Valle de San Jose.” In 1840, Jose Antonio Bernardino Pico, brother of Andres Pico and Pio Pico, received the northerly grant of 26,668 acres called “Rancho San Jose del Valle.” However, Pico soon abandoned the land due to frequent troubles with the indigenous people. In 1844, John Trumble Warner, who had married Anita Gale, a ward of Pio Pico, became a Mexican citizen and assumed the name of Juan Jose Warner, acquiring the Pico grant. It is believed that Warner and his wife lived in an adobe hut at the springs for a while and then built the original adobe ranch house about four miles from the hot springs near the fork in the main trail to avoid conflicts with Native Americans who had occupied the hot springs for centuries. In 1851, while Warner was absent, leaving Bill Marshall in charge of the ranch, Indian Chief Antonio Garra, who was angry over unjust taxes imposed by the San Diego County Sheriff, raided the ranch with other Indians, aided by renegade Bill Marshall. They drove off or stole Warner’s livestock and burned the house and trading post. Garra was captured, tried and executed, but Warner never recovered from the financial loss. He abandoned the ranch and moved to Los Angeles about 1855. The Portillo portion of the grant, Rancho Valle de San Jose, came under ownership of Dona Vicente Sepulveda Carrillo in 1858. The Dona raised sheep, cattle, horses, oxen, mules, wheat and barley, and was said to have rebuilt the Warner Ranch house in 1859, but in a somewhat different location. The Dona remained on the rancho until 1869, at which time she moved to Anaheim, and the rancho was taken over by absentee owner John G. pen enrollment for individuals and families both on and off the Affordable Care Act health insurance exchange is from Nov. 1 through Jan. 31, 2017. enrollment period that begins at the end of 2017. Ramirez notes that there are exceptions for special circumstances, which may include marriage, divorce, the birth of a child, or a child who reaches age 26. Certified enrollment counselors and certified insurance agents can help individuals navigate through the choices. Health insurance costs continue to rise, and there are options that are available to help minimize the impact. For example, there are four

different tier levels to choose from: bronze, silver, gold and platinum. Deductibles and co-pays vary from tier to tier. Ramirez advises people to make sure they understand what their portion of insurance will be before making their choice. Covered California is also an option that may help with premiums, as it is based on income and family size. The website www.coveredca.com allows people to research available rates and plans, and if help is needed, professional

assistance is available. Another good starting point is finding a doctor that you want to continue seeing and asking what insurance they accept. It helps agents narrow down the choices, making it less overwhelming. Medi-Cal enrollment assistance can also be obtained, if that is needed. For example, a household with one person with an income of less than $16,394, or two people who make $22,107 or less, can qualify for Medi-Cal in 2017. Medi-Cal enrollment is yearround.

Small-business coverage is another option. There are special criteria that have to be met to qualify for smallbusiness eligibility, so check whether or not your business may qualify. Ramirez reminds residents that penalties for not having coverage in 2017 have once again increased. She recommends having coverage in place to avoid the penalties. n Information is courtesy of Amber Ramirez, Farmers Insurance Agent, located at 603 Main St., Ste. 7. Call 760-789-0010.

immie Johnson’s road to a legendary seventh NASCAR Sprint Cup title was a “potholed” bumpy journey and one that would overcome NASCAR barriers. To join Richard Petty and the late Dale Earnhardt on the sport’s highest podium, he had to figure out a way to work through a playoff system called the “Chase.” Johnson had won an amazing string of five straight titles, missed for two years and came back to take No. 6. The next year, a playoff system would require drivers to battle for 12 Chase positions, and then it was a matter of elimination down to the premier four for the title round. Had NASCAR found a way to stop him? No, but it took Johnson three years to beat the system.

However, a good portion of the hike takes place in direct sunlight, with little shade available, so it is recommended that you apply sunscreen before your excursion and pack enough water for all participants. Along with ample water, remember to pack a first aid kit and other emergency supplies. I would also recommend a pair of binoculars for bird-watching, as well as a good camera. There are several shaded picnic spots along the way,

Warner Ranch History foreman Charles Ayres until 1880, when Andrew Linton took over as ranch manager. In 1888, Downey leased the rancho to Walter Vail, a cattleman who had interests in Temecula and Arizona, and his partner, Carol W. Gates. Vail and Gates operated the ranch until 1913, under various managers, including James Walsh, James Knight and Sam B. Taylor. During this period, Downey, who still owned the ranch, repeatedly tried to remove the Indians. In about 1880, some of them had left the springs and moved their stock and homes into Lost Valley on the opposite side of Hot Springs Mountain. By 1892, Downey began proceedings to have the Indians removed permanently and completely from the hot springs. After many years of legal maneuvering, he succeeded in having the governments forcibly remove them on April 21, 1903. They were taken by wagon to a new location near Pala. After Walter Vail died in 1911, the ranch was acquired in 1913 by George Sawday, who proceeded to build the largest cattle empire in the region. Sawday hired Ed Grand as the ranch foreman. He supervised the operations that brought yearlings from Arizona, where they were grazed for two or three years and then driven overland to Temecula for

shipment by rail to market in Los Angeles. For years, the old Warner Ranch House was the center of activity and headquarters for ranching operations. Old-timers tell tales of famous people who visited the ranch, including Will Rogers, who was there in the 1930s, and John Wayne, who came in the 1940s and who exchanged hats with George Sawday. In 1935, Hans Starr, Sawday’s sonin-law, became foreman and was there until 1960, when the ranch was purchased by the Vista Irrigation District. Today, the area is a thriving resort community, enhanced by Warner Springs Ranch Resort’s fully restored golf course. The old Warner-Carrillo Ranch House located along the old emigrant trail is now a historical site. It had gradually slumped into a state of decay until it was restored by The Vista Irrigation District. It is now operated by Save Our Heritage Organisation (SOHO) of San Diego. The cowboys, the large herds of cattle and the dusty cattle drives northward to the railhead are but shadows of the past. However, the rural Warner Springs area still beckons visitors who find rest and restoration in the beautiful backcountry. n

Curry Places Second in BBQ Competition By Annette Williams ~ the journal

W

hen the Cowboy Charcoal Fire & Ice Women’s Championship Barbeque Series competition reached its finale last month in Orange Beach, Ala., Ramona resident Sylvia “Sylvie” Curry emerged as the reserve grand champion. The Fire & Ice series was launched

Ramona resident Sylvia “Sylvie” Curry, center, placed second in the Cowboy Charcoal national women’s barbecue competition. Photos Courtesy of Cowboy Charcoal

Curry competed as the solo head pitmaster for the Lady of Q team.

as a platform to highlight the many talented women pitmasters. As the solo head pitmaster for Lady of Q, Curry had earlier qualified

by making it to the top 10 in the first-ever female competitive barbecue series, after accruing points at events sanctioned by the nonprofit Kansas City Barbeque Society from January through October. The final contest was part of the World Food Championships. Her barbecuing career got its start in an unconventional way — online. “About 10 years ago I had a food blog,” she said. She grilled some ribs, posted a picture on the blog, and got a call from a barbecue team in Los Angeles. As a result, Curry and three men — also food bloggers — got together and competed through 2011. At that point, she decided she was ready to go solo and start her own

team, Lady of Q, with pit support from her husband, Greg Curry. The two live on Highland Valley Road. After retiring from her job as a hospital pharmacist, Curry says she had more time to participate in competition barbecue, which she says is “fun!” Most of her competitions have been in or around Southern California, including Vista, Del Mar, Dana Point and Bakersfield, but she also competed in North Carolina by combining it with a visit to family members in the area. “The top lady pitmasters across the country have been gathering points all year in different competitions,” she said. “I was No. 1 all year, and the top 10 were invited to come

to Alabama to compete in a grill-off contest for the chance of moving on.” With her skill on the grill, there was little question that she was ready for the big-time. “The grill-off was fast-paced — an hour and 50 minutes to grill and plate a sample for the judges,” she said. “It’s amazing how fast an hour and 50 minutes goes! Nothing could be pre-done — it was all from scratch.” She said it’s a little funny that she’s the only California-based business, while most of the others are from the South, which is considered the national birthplace of barbecue. It won’t be long until the competition season gets under way in January, and Curry and her Lady of Q plan to be a part of it! n
