ith planning in its final phase, the 46th Annual Ramona Country Fair will soon be under way, and is projected to attract crowds from near and far. Ramona Chamber of Commerce is pleased to present another fair this year, featuring good old-fashioned fun for the entire family. “It’s going to be a great weekend, jam-packed with lots of activities,” said committee chair Sally Westbrook. Scheduled to run from Thursday, Aug. 25, through Sunday, Aug. 28, the fair will offer some of the most popular foods, rides, vendor booths and entertainment around. On Friday, the winner of the 2016 Man About Town will be announced. “We have five local businessmen competing to raise money for charity,” said Westbrook, describing how each

penny earned converts into a vote cast. Collection cans have been placed in select locations around town, and proceeds from the friendly competition will be divided 50-50 between the gentlemen’s charities of choice and the Chamber’s scholarship fund. Contestants are Bob Murray of Java Hut; Steve Hermiz of Country Wine and Spirits; Paul Stykel of the Ramona Community Planning Group; Thad Clendenen, branch manager for Century 21 Award; and Charlie Koehler of La Finquita Winery. “The man who raises the most will be named at 5 o’clock,” she said. Immediately following, winners of the Foto Friday contest will be announced and the submitted photos of animals, nature, people and architecture will be on display. At 6 p.m., the Two The Moon band

will christen the stage, before the headlining group, Give Me Back My Wig, is expected to give a toe-tapping performance, starting at 8:30 p.m. “These are great line-dancing

bands,” said Westbrook. Saturday doubles as “media day” and kicks-off with a Home Sweet Home Contest, featuring entries of homemade jams, jellies, salsa, honey,

ne year ago, retired Marine combat veteran Toran Gaal pedaled his hand-cycle up Highways 67 and 78 through Ramona to Julian. It was the first stretch of his two-month “Ride Across America” to benefit the Semper Fi Fund. He arrived 63 days later at the Iwo Jima/Marine Corps Memorial in Arlington, Va., having raised nearly $50,000 for the organization. Last month, it was Sgt.

Gaal’s turn to receive, as he, his wife, Lisa, and adopted daughter, Bella, were honored at a ceremony and given the keys to a new, mortgage-free, specially adapted home in Valley Center. The family was escorted to the celebration by fire department personnel and American Legion Riders, where they were surrounded by friends, supporters and representatives of the groups that helped make the home a real-

ity. Among those present was John Baca, a Julian resident and Congressional Medal of Honor recipient. A number of people in attendance expressed their pride at being involved in the home project. Many told of their respect for Gaal for maintaining a can-do attitude and accomplishing so much in spite of his injuries, which he received during his third deployment to Afghanistan in 2011, when an improvised explosive device (IED) blast put him in a coma for two months and cost him his legs. The home was provided by the Homes For Our Troops (HFOT) nonprofit organization, with a solar power system from American Solar Direct and furnishings provided by Furnishing Hope. “What it’s like to have a home that’s fully accessible and furnished is something I can’t sum up in a few words,” Gaal said a week after the ceremony. “When I saw the home on July 23, I was in shock and blessed to have a home that is accessible.” The family plans to move in around mid-August, after

showering to cooking whether I am home or not is a huge deal. Not having to watch him struggle to do basic daily items is a blessing.” The move will be one of several fresh starts for the family. Toran and Lisa were still newlyweds when he rode his hand-cycle from coast to coast last year. “We actually got married in early 2015, but had a huge wedding this March, compliments of Colonel and Mrs. Ransom of Paradise Falls,” said Lisa. It was a fresh start for Bella, as well. “I adopted Bella before

Toran and I met,” Lisa said. “They shared a special bond from early on. Toran was also adopted, and Bella feels like they are ‘the same.’” Qualifying for the home and watching it come to completion was about a twoyear process. “Toran applied to Homes for Our Troops in 2014, and was accepted to our program shortly after,” said Patty Catalano, deputy director of marketing for HFOT. She says that those they help must be approved by the Veterans Administration for a Specially Adapted Housing Grant, which is based on the

veteran’s level of injury. “Most of these veterans have sustained injuries, including multiple amputations, full or partial paralysis, and severe traumatic brain injury,” she said. To qualify for a HTOF grant, veterans must have been injured after Sept 11, 2001, in combat or in support of combat operations in the theater of war; they must be retired or in the retirement process; they must pass a criminal and credit background check; and the homes are to be used as the veteran’s primary residence. “We are so happy that Toran and Lisa have their new forever home,” said Catalano.

“Toran now has lifelong safety and stability in the home, as do Lisa and Bella. By living mortgage-free, Toran also has the stability and foundation to get out there in the community and beyond, and keep on mentoring, motivating and inspiring others.” The home’s state-of-the-art solar power system was a gift from American Solar Direct, with the costs and installation covered by the company and its employees, who volunteered their time and efforts to the project. Company President Kevin Bauer says he is committed to veterans, because his own father served in the 101st Airborne Division.

“To see the amount of space that I have with all the furniture in the home, I am just blown away with the independence that I will have,” said Gaal. Move-in day is just around the corner, but the family is already starting to feel at home in their new community. “Even though we haven’t moved into the house yet, every day when I go up there to meet with the fencing and solar people or drop a load off, I am greeted with little presents at our door,” Lisa said. “It feels wonderful to be so welcomed!” n

Ramona Dog to Compete at Nationals By Angela McLaughlin ~ the journal

E

xcitement reverberates through the air, through every strand of fur and hair, as dogs and their owners gear up for the Purina Pro Plan Incredible Dog Challenge Championship. Residing in Ramona and preparing for this event is our very own champion. Saphira is a 2 ½ -year-old Belgian Malinois owned by longtime Ramona resident Melissa Ness. The pair recently broke the world record during the Fetch It competition at the Western Regionals held June 10 and 11 in Huntington Beach.

Saphira’s win will air on San Diego’s XETV on Aug. 14 at 3 p.m. Though not originally invited to participate in the event, Ness and Saphira took a gamble and camped overnight as “walk-ons,” hoping to be chosen as one of eight dogs allowed into the qualifiers — a pre-competition that would allow them into regionals. Three out of eight dogs were chosen from the qualifiers, and Saphira was one of the lucky three. She went on to place first in the Western Regionals, initially tying the world

record at 24 feet and then breaking it twice, at 24.6 feet and finally at 25 feet. Saphira’s win will air on San Diego’s XETV on Aug. 14 at 3 p.m. Fetch It is an event where a bumper is held three feet over the

water, and dogs run off the end of a dock and try to retrieve or knock down the bumper, which may be 20 or more feet from the end of the dock. Winning the regionals granted Ness and Saphira an invite to the National Championship, to be held Oct. 1 at Purina Farms in Missouri. This is where winners of the Eastern and Western Regionals will assemble to compete for the national titles in a number of categories. Ness has been training Saphira since she brought her home at eight weeks old. The amazing part is that they do not normally train with water;

they do ground training, since they do not have their own training facility — though a recently purchased aboveground pool will change this. “Her whole life has been gearing towards different types of sports,” Ness says. Saphira has practiced and competed in other water sports, such as dock jumping, also known as “Big Air,” and Extreme Vertical. Among the three, they have been in about 10 competitions, and Ness says they are still very new to these events. See Ramona Dog to Compete continued on page 16

Competing at the Ramona Junior Fair By Angela McLaughlin ~ the journal

T

he excitement of the Ramona Junior Fair is contagious. This year’s young participants anxiously awaited their turn to be judged while trying to keep their animals — and themselves — clean and ready to go. Weeks and months of preparation all boiled down to a few minutes in front of a judge. Members of 4-H, FFA and Grange competed for titles in categories such as showmanship, breed, market and others. This year’s theme, “A Look Back at the Fair,” had many parents remembering when they were young competitors and the vital lessons they learned while showing at the fair. Ramona Junior Fair is not only exciting, it teaches skills and responsibilities to the young people, who are learning valuable lessons and are being rewarded for their hard work and dedication. n

Ramona Dog to Compete Continued from Though they still compete in Big Air and Extreme Vertical, Ness says they chose to focus on Fetch It because, “It was something new and something different. I have a young dog that is willing to do anything I point her at.” Ness owns two other champion dogs: a nine year old Chesapeake Bay retriever, Smoke, who won Purina’s

Incredible Diving Dog event in 2010, and her 13-year-old dog Striker, a Belgian Malinois/ border collie mix, who became a world champion in 2006 with Extreme Vertical. Ness has been training dogs for competitions since 2004, when she started with Striker. She has dedicated a lot of time and energy toward her dogs, even buying her house and property for her dogs. “I specifically wanted acreage and wanted to be able to train my dogs on my own property.” Ness says the perks of

the events are not just about winning, but about the people. “I like the people,” she says. “I have friends in other countries because of dog sports. If I am traveling, I have friends everywhere now, and it’s pretty cool.” She says that being a part of a community of dog lovers has made her truly enjoy being a part of these competitions. “It’s not about winning. It’s about enjoying the time with my friends and enjoying the time with my dogs.” n

Patrol Offers Home Security Checks

As a service to the community, the Ramona Sheriff’s Senior Volunteer Patrol offers free vacation home checks. Many people think the only reason to enroll in the home check program is to limit the chance of their home being burglarized. However, last month, San Diego County Sheriff Senior Volunteers spotted a car fire on Highway 67 near Mount Woodson, and called it in. This became the Rock fire, and quick action by the volunteers prevented

it from becoming much more devastating. Last summer and earlier this year when heavy rains came, patrol members discovered evidence of flood damage and reported it to the homeowners. Homes are checked daily for up to six days per week while residents are away. During the check, volunteers pick up newspapers and other evidence that residents are gone, verify that doors and windows are locked, and

observe the property. They will inform either the homeowner or a designated contact person that a problem has been observed. Suspicious activity will be reported to a sheriff’s deputy. To have your home checked while you are away, call the Ramona Sheriff’s Senior Volunteer Patrol desk at 760-738-2466 or the station’s public desk at 760-789-9157. n

Ramona Chamber of Commerce warned the public about a woman who is calling people, including Chamber members, and pretending to represent the Chamber. The calls come from an 888 number. Chamber Executive Director Joe Stupar issued the warning and asks people not to give the caller any information. “It’s a scam!” he said. “Basically the scammer says she’s calling on behalf of the Chamber, soliciting money or asking for

If anyone receives such a call, Stupar says not to give out any information and report it to the Chamber at 760-789-1311 or rccstaff@ramonachamber.com. n

Celebrating the Western Lifestyle at Cowboy Day By Annette Williams ~ the journal

N

ational Day of the Cowboy celebrations are held nationwide on the fourth Saturday of July, and Ramona residents make a point of coming together to recognize the special day, which was established in 2005 by a federal resolution.

This year’s event was hosted by “Ranger Doug” Oliver of Ranger Doug’s Shootists’ Emporium and held at Mountain Valley Ranch, where aficionados of the Western lifestyle enjoyed a number of fun and informative presentations. Oliver estimated that 200

people attended throughout the afternoon, and said that about $1,500 was raised to benefit Ramona Town Hall. Among the speakers was Steve Tellem, who told guests that ranching is still alive in Southern California and provides a second income for many people.
