She regularly works with local landscape designers, contractors and other gate fabricators. After a two-year hiatus, she recently participated in this year’s Ramona Open Studios Tour. ome might consider Old Survey Road 97 nothing more than a retired dusty trail. But to members of the Ramona Trails Association (RTA), it’s nothing less than a road to adventure. Glen Morgan, board member for the RTA, sheds light on the historic road and some of its travelers. He says the wide, wellgraded dirt road was once used by Native American Indians, Kit Carson and others who were determined to reach Ramona and parts of the backcountry. “It’s a legitimate road,” he said, telling how it’s been traveled by Wild-West wagons, stagecoaches and eventually automobiles. The old route connects Ramona to the Crest to Coast Trail and begins near Rangeland Road, runs through San Pasqual Valley toward Escondido, and T-bones into the San Dieguito River Trail, which runs alongside Lake Hodges down through Rancho Santa Fe, and stretches to the Del Mar coastline. Historic documents reveal that the trail was established in the late 18th century. It served as a postal route, brought eager gold miners to the nearby town of Julian, and in 1875 was declared a public highway, for the second time.
Though it was considered a main throughway for travelers between Ramona and Escondido until the early 1900s, it was officially abandoned in 1930 when it was replaced by an alternate road, Highway 78.
In 2010, the RTA felt it was time to resurrect its interest in the trail. With the hopes of having it designated as a historic point of interest, the nonprofit organization paid for an archeological evaluation of the land. As they gained momentum, they encountered opposition from community members. One local wildlife group identified a golden eagle nest about half a mile from the road, situated on the side of a cliff, and a few hundred yards away from a residential area. Where Dreams Are Made By Tracy Rolling
S
ome dreams are born after reading a book or learning something new in school. Others are born from experience. For one local resident, David Taft, a Ramona High School (RHS) senior, his dream to build and compete in his own racecar was born in the spectator seats at Barona Speedway six years ago. “I was invited to Barona by some friends,” he said. Shortly thereafter, he started racing modified stock cars, also known as “dwarf cars.”
Modified racing is one of the oldest forms of car racing and dates back to the early days of post World War II. Though there are a variety of sanctioned body styles and engine sizes, racers must follow a strict set of guidelines when building and competing their miniaturized stock cars. Taft has personally witnessed the checkered flag whip through the air as he crossed over the finish line time and time again. He has competed in numerous races, most on a local level, starting with the first car he raced, which was built by Ed Morris of Triple EEE Racing.

Taft sits on the wheel of one of his early racecars.
“Mr. Ed has given David a lot of help and advice over the past six years,” said Taft’s mom, Tracy, sharing how David inherited the track nickname “Catfish.” “The story goes something like this. When he first started out at 12 years old, he would commonly wind up on the inside part of the track, which was muddy and wet. Mike Hall asked him, ‘What are you, a bottom feeder? A catfish?’ The name has stuck ever since.” But parents Matt and Tracy Taft, owners of Kitchen Barn, aren’t just sideline fans. They’re sponsors, too. “We want to show support for all that he does,” said Tracy, acknowledging the other generous sponsors throughout the years, including Ransom Brothers True Value, Medallion Cabinetry, Eiler Brothers, Jan Ryan of RE/MAX, Alba Honda, and California Stone Creations. weekend of March on the very track where his dream was born. The building process took 12 months, and he said, “I didn’t do it alone.” Giving kudos to a team of friends and family, he recognized the tremendous help that came from Bobby Brown and Darren Brent of B&B Race Chassis. He also identified RHS instructors Robert Grace and Mike Saavedra from the automotive program, saying he learned a lot about the overall maintenance and internal function of engines in their classes and in the Skills USA program. Taft grew his knowledge by competing in the Skills USA program his first three years at RHS and even advanced to the state level every year, winning the bronze award during his sophomore year. Although his new car has only three races under its belt, he knows all too well there will be plenty of opportunities to

Mural Proposed for Chamber Building A mural to be painted on the front of the Ramona Chamber of Commerce building is in the works, with the help of local artists who would work together on it as a community project. The Chamber will provide materials, and the artists will be asked to donate their time and effort, and they will have the honor of signing the finished product. High school art students are also invited to contribute. The Chamber building mural is not a project of the Ramona H.E.A.R.T. Mural Project. “Sunny Peterson is spearheading it, with the Chamber’s support,” said Ramona
Chamber President Charlotte Jensen. “The Chamber is supporting it, definitely, to recognize our local artists who would be interested in being a part of it.” The Chamber has offered suggestions about suitable themes that may be depicted — such as a key to the town, ribbon cuttings, and historical and present-day business portrayals — and artists are welcome to submit topics. The goal is to create a colorful, interesting and fun mural that may be enjoyed for many years. Interested artists are asked to leave a message at 760-789-0470 by May 1. n

A Better Way for Seniors to Buy a New Home: The Reverse Mortgage Purchasing a new home with a reverse mortgage provides several benefits you simply can’t get with traditional financing. A reverse morgage allows you to: • Make no mortgage payments on your new home as long as you live in it and stay current with property taxes. • Eliminate the need for a credit check and income verification. • Use proceeds from a gift as your down payment. If you have equity in your current home, or if you own it outright, consider using a reverse mortgage to purchase your new home. You’ve worked hard all your life to pay for your home, why not let it start paying you back?
F
ermenting grapes for delightful wine varieties has become a booming business in Ramona’s valleys that could motivate an increase in the area’s overall revenue and property values. In 1998, a few wholesale wineries began. Then in 2006, they achieved an American Viticultural Area (AVA) accreditation. In 2010, San Diego County established a winery ordinance that allowed tasting rooms, and that’s when things really took off. The 89,000-acre area covers 139 square miles of primarily rural country surrounding Ramona, which is unincorporated. The area is home to more than 80 commercial vineyards and 25 bonded wineries. Micole Moore, head of Ramona Valley Vineyard Association’s board of directors, believes wineries will help the area’s economy in many ways. “Just talk to realtors,” he said. “As soon as something is on the market, it’s being sold. “We’re trying to make Ramona a destination and not a drive-through to Julian and the desert. Trying to get them
(visitors) to stop and spend their money in Ramona.” Winery owners share their business ideals with the hope that some of these practices will rub off on the community, as well. “We share equipment, advice and
experiences, lending a hand at the installation of new vineyards. We don’t compete with one another (as vintners),” explained Moore, who owns Ramona Ranch Winery with business partner Teri Kerns. “People aren’t going to come

here for just one winery. So we actually send them to other wineries to share their wines.” Moore said completion comes when they enter contests at Southern California fairs and
elsewhere in the country. “We enter a lot of contests,” he said. “If you get a medal, it means you have a good seller.” It might be noted that Napa Valley’s wines gained notoriety when its Chardonnay
and Cabernet Sauvignon gained a public victory in a 1976 international wine tasting competition in Paris. “I started planting grapes in 2006,” Moore said. “We opened
our wineries to the public in January 2013. But it’s costly to start in the business. “It cost $35,000 an acre to get started,” he said. “That involves getting your licenses
and bonding with the federal government and state agency. Then there was the cost of obtaining barrels and making the wine.” According to records, in 2000, John Schwaesdall was the only bonded and licensed winery in operation in what is now the Ramona Valley AVA, but others were growing wine grapes, and some were making wine on an amateur basis. Then, a few growers attended a vineyard management class. They began talking about their common interest, and the wheels started turning. “Here at Ramona Ranch, we strive to produce balanced wines that will stand the test of time,” Moore continued. “Our wines are produced from estate and local vineyards, personally selected for the quality fruit. Ramona Ranch Winery started planting in 2006, with a small test vineyard of Petit Sirah, Syrah, Cabernet Sauvignon, Sangiovese, Tempranillo, Merlot and Mourvedre. In 2010, they planted larger vineyards on the property, consisting of Tannat, Sangiovese and Cabernet Sauvignon.
“Attention to detail is something we practice steadfastly at our winery,” Moore concluded. “In fact, as the owners and wine makers, we are usually here to offer insights into our wine
making practices. “We invite anyone to follow our journey in this emerging wine region and believe they will get to know and eventually love the little valley.” n

Coldwell Banker Honors Award Winners
C
oldwell Banker Country Realty recently hosted its annual awards breakfast at the San Vicente Inn, marking a year of success and significant accomplishments in real estate sales by the agents, said Broker/Owner Katie McNorton. Several fun awards were presented to the agents for the work they perform throughout the year, and the occasion was finalized with an announcement of the national awards earned by the top-producing realtors. “All of our agents had outstanding production for 2013, however, the following agents placed in the topproducing agents of the nation for Coldwell Banker,” said McNorton. “It is important to know that Coldwell Banker is the top-producing real estate brand in the United States and Canada, so these awards are no small accomplishment for anyone working in the
real estate industry.” Sharon Quisenberry was presented with the President’s Premier Award, which is given to only 1 percent of agents worldwide. Karen Dye received the Diamond Society award, which is given to only 15 percent of all Coldwell Banker agents. And Susan Michalek received the Sterling Society Award, which is given to only 20 percent of agents. Trudy Brodbeck, in her first year in real estate, received the Ramona office’s Rookie of the Year award for outstanding production, with more than 15 transactions in her first eight months. “We are enormously proud and thankful to these agents for their continuous success and hard work on behalf of Coldwell Banker Country Realty,” said McNorton. n

Ingredients 2 tablespoons olive oil 1 large red onion, diced 1 medium red bell pepper, diced 1 medium yellow bell pepper, diced 4 cloves garlic, chopped 1 pound lean ground beef 8 ounces Italian sausage, casing removed
(6 to 8 Servings)
1/4 cup chili powder 1 tablespoon ground cumin 1 tablespoon dried oregano One 4-ounce can tomato paste One 12-ounce bottle beer One 28-ounce can diced tomatoes One 14-ounce can diced tomatoes One 15-ounce can black beans, drained and rinsed One 15-ounce can kidney beans, drained and rinsed One 15-ounce can pinto beans, drained and rinsed Directions Add the olive oil to a large Dutch oven over mediumhigh heat. Once hot, add the onions and peppers and saute until soft, about 4 minutes. Add the garlic and saute until just fragrant. Stir in the beef and sausage, breaking it up with the back of a wooden spoon, and cook until browned, about 6 minutes. Drain the beef mixture through a colander. Add it back to the Dutch oven and stir in the chili powder, cumin and oregano. Cook for about 2 minutes. Stir the tomato paste into the beef mixture; this will “toast” it and give the chili more flavor. Add the beer and stir up any browned bits on the bottom of the pan. Bring to a simmer, and then add both cans of diced tomatoes and beans. Simmer on medium-low for 2 hours, stirring on occasion to keep the bottom from sticking. Top with shredded cheese, sour cream and chopped green onions before serving.

Rotary Scholarship Program Under Way
Rotary Honors Students
By Johnny McDonald
S
cholarships help to give academic achieving graduates an encouraging financial boost as they pursue new educational challenges and career goals. Each June, the Ramona Rotary Club does its part in presenting scholarship money to deserving high school students in the area. To reach these financial goals, the club has established fundraising programs, including an opportunity drawing for a Traeger Lil’ Tex Elite pellet grill and accessories, with the drawing to be held May 18 at the Rotary booth at Ramona Rodeo. Meanwhile, a five-person panel is screening applications from several high schools in the area, checking records, studying endorsements and reading essays. “They are judged on grade point average, financial needs and community service that might adhere to the club’s motto,” said scholarship chair Joan Renaud. This is her third term as the chairperson and 10th year on the committee. “We also look at their majors, faculty consideration and personal achievement recommendations,” she said. “Vocational applications are a little different from the academic.” “We look at what their ambitions are, if they are realistic,” said Renaud, who was an English teacher in Vermont and Texas before coming to Ramona. “And we need proof of their enrollment in a course of study. Some even write essays. We try not to give a scholarship to those who have received many others.” She said early applications have been received from Julian Union High School, Ramona High School and Mountain Valley Academy. She stressed the importance of students filling out the club’s application form. Financial chairman Bob Vaughn said the amount of money the club is able to award depends on economic conditions in the community. “In 2008, for example, we gave $1,000 each to 14 students, but we haven’t matched that since,” he said. “This year, we’re raffling off a barbecue. We’ll sell more tickets at the rodeo, of course. It’s part of our overall fundraising projects. Scholarships are a part of what we do.” Tickets for the Traeger Lil’ Tex Elite pellet grill are available for a $10 donation at Farmers Insurance, 603 Main St., Ste. 7; Java Hut, SDCE; Ramona Home Journal, 726 D St.; Ramona Valley Presbyterian Church, 1039 D St., Ste. 4; and at the Rotary booth at the rodeo. n

529 Plan Can Help with College Funding and Estateplanning Considerations Submitted by Patrick Meskell
N
ow that another school year is drawing to a close, your young children are a step closer to the day when they’ll be heading off to college. Of course, as you’re probably aware, higher education doesn’t come cheap — and the costs seem to continuously climb. You can help your children — or even your grandchildren — meet these expenses by investing in a 529 plan. And this college savings vehicle offers estateplanning benefits. As a college funding vehicle, a 529 plan offers some significant benefits. When you contribute to a 529 plan, your earnings accumulate tax free, provided they are used for qualified higher
education expenses. (Keep in mind, though, that 529 plan distributions not used for qualified expenses may be subject to federal and state income tax and a 10 percent IRS penalty.) Furthermore, your 529 plan contributions may be deductible from your state taxes. However, 529 plans vary, so be sure to check with your tax advisor. And the lifetime contribution limits for 529 plans are quite generous; while these limits vary by state, many plans allow contributions well in excess of $200,000. Plus, a 529 plan is flexible: If the child, grandchild or other beneficiary decides against college, you can transfer the unused funds
to someone else, tax and penalty free. Now, let’s turn to a 529 plan’s estate-planning benefits. If you think that you may need to reduce the size of your taxable estate, and you also want to create a legacy you may be able to enjoy during your lifetime, you may find that the 529 plan offers a solution for you. When you establish and contribute to a 529 plan, the assets leave your estate — but they don’t leave your control. If your named beneficiary decides against college and you don’t have another family member to whom you can transfer the account — or if you simply change your mind about funding the 529 plan — you can get your money back at any time, although, as mentioned above, you’ll have to pay taxes, and possibly a 10 percent IRS penalty, on the earnings. Your contributions to a 529 plan also qualify for the $14,000 annual gift tax exclusion, so you can give large amounts each year without
incurring the gift tax. In the investment world, you can find many vehicles that can help you make progress toward one goal. But it’s far less common to find something that may give you a boost toward two. And when the two goals are helping a child or grandchild go to college and lowering the value of your taxable estate — while still maintaining control of your assets — you’ve got an investment worth considering. So consult with your tax and financial advisors to determine if a 529 plan is right for you. And if it is, think about taking action soon, because the more
years you can contribute to a 529 plan, the better the outlook for both your future student and your estate plans. Edward Jones, its employees and financial advisors are not estate planners and cannot provide tax or legal advice. You should consult your estateplanning attorney or qualified tax advisor regarding your situation. n Patrick Meskell is a financial advisor for Edward Jones. He can be reached at 760-787-1113. Patrick Meskell’s office, 1425 Main Street, Ramona, is located in the Albertsons Center.

Big Belly Linked to Big Problems By Jim Evans
37 inches or more compared to women with a waist measurement of 27 inches or less and a five-year lower life expectancy after the age of 40. And every additional two inches of belly size increased the mortality risk by 9 percent. These findings were valid even among people with normal BMI levels. However, if you are like most people reading this, the message will probably go in one ear and out the other, and you’ll forget about it in less than a minute. Why? Because it isn’t easy to lose a big belly, and you know it. As you grow older, it becomes even more difficult, because you become less motivated. After all, you’ve probably been carrying around that extra baggage for several years, and you’ve kind
It isn’t just about your appearance or the pants you can’t squeeze into anymore — it’s about your health. The fact is that men and women with ample waistlines are more likely to die younger from heart disease, respiratory problems and cancer. Rationalizing a big belly by claiming you have a healthy BMI (body mass index) doesn’t fly anymore, according to new information released by the Mayo Clinic. A new international study led by Mayo researchers and published in the March edition of Mayo Clinic Proceedings found that men with a waist measurement of 43 inches or more had a 50 percent higher risk of dying than men with a 35-inch waistline or less and a threeyear lower life expectancy after the age of 40. RMWD Breaks Ground for Natural Gas Pipeline By Ruth Lepper
R
amona Municipal Water District directors tossed the first shovelfuls of dirt in a groundbreaking ceremony to commemorate the beginning of the installation of a natural gas pipeline at the district’s Poway Pump Station. The event, that took place in Poway on the district’s easement road, was an extension of the regular board meeting on April 22 that was held at the Ramona Community Center. RMWD General Manager David Barnum welcomed the small crowd that gathered, calling the event a “milestone,”
saying it was a rare occurrence for the water district to have a new project getting under way. Barnum paid special tribute to the employees working on the project. In particular, he praised Operations Supervisor Johnny Brean, engineer Mike Metts and Ricardo Soto, of the engineering department. The construction contract was awarded to Atom Engineering Construction, Inc., from Hemet with a winning bid of $240,398. The natural gas pipeline will ensure that the Poway Pump Station continues to serve as a secondary power source for the district. The new pipeline will
improve the operation of the pump station and ensure that power will continue to be available without interruption in the event of an emergency, such as fire or power outage. As a result, ratepayers may benefit from energy savings. The pump station project has been in the works for the past two years. RMWD coordinated with San Diego Gas &

declared a special meeting of the board. In other action, the directors approved a change to the RMWD legislative code. The action repealed a code approved in 2007 allowing Ramona Parks and Recreation Association to annually extract a maximum of 75 acre feet of surplus water to irrigate Wellfield Park. The change will now restrict the excess water to be used during emergencies that may arise from drought conditions or any other threatened or existing water shortages. The board also approved Director Foote stepping into the position of treasurer of the Ramona Public Facilities Corporation for the remainder of the calendar year. The position was previously held by Director Rex Schildhouse, who resigned from board duties. Schildhouse continues as a board director but said previously he will only attend meetings that have business on the agenda related to his division. He was not in attendance at the April 22 meeting. Director Kit Kesinger also was not in attendance. The next board meeting will begin at 2 p.m. on May 13 at Ramona Community Center, 434 Aqua Ln. n

Ramona Rodeo Plans Big Weekend
By Ruth Lepper
T
he 34th annual Ramona Rodeo gets under way May 16 with three days of events scheduled. Competitors from near and far will be arriving in town to take part in several categories. Joani Georgeson, with the Ramona Outdoor Community Center heading the event, said more stock will be brought in for the rodeo than there has been in past years. Honeycutt Rodeo Stock Contractors out of Colorado will be providing horses, steers and calves for the cowboys to ride, wrestle or rope. Popular rodeo announcer Andy Stewart returns. He first came to Ramona for last year’s rodeo. “He is infectious — just awesome,” Georgeson said. “It’s like he’s riding every single animal in every single event. He makes you feel like you are in that event.” Also returning will be Troy Lerwill, billed as “The Wild Child,” a Texas-born clown who performs spectacular feats in the rodeo ring while riding a motorcycle, as well as clowning around with the contestants. Lerwill began his career in 1995, and two years later joined the Professional Rodeo Cowboys Association (PRCA). There are seven categories for the riders: steer wrestling, saddle bronc riding, bareback bronc riding, team roping, bull riding, calf roping and barrel racing. A hospitality tent is available for the contestants to relax in between events and have a place where they can absorb the country-town atmosphere and feel welcomed to Ramona. “Cowboy Church” will take place Sunday morning at the ROCC Pavilion for participants and visitors. Mutton Bustin’ is a popular event for youngsters ages 5 to 7. In the past, it was featured only on Sundays for the Kids Day programs, but this year will be included in all three rodeo shows. “It was such a hit last year, we brought it to all three performances this year,” Georgeson said.

Rodeo Parade Marches Down Main Street
By Ruth Lepper
F
or the fourth year running, the Ramona Rodeo parade will march down Main Street. Spectators will be lining up early on Saturday, May 17, in anticipation of the 10 a.m. start. Eight-year-old James T. Dukes has been chosen as the grand marshal. He is the California Junior Rodeo Association’s current Pee Wee Champion All Around Cowboy, a title he earned in January at an event in Norco.
James is a student at James Dukes (no relation) Elementary School in Ramona. He is the son of Maria and Tito Dukes. James has been diagnosed with a rare cancer, Berkus lymphoma leukemia. Reports show he is responding well to treatments. In part due to James’ ailment, the parade and rodeo committee selected this year’s theme to be “Tattoos on ‘R’ Town.” “He is one of the ‘tattoos’ on our town,” Joani Georgeson, with Ramona Outdoor Community
Center, said. “He’s just an up-andrunning little cowboy, what our hometown stands for. We’re all working together to help him through his battle.” The theme also is a play on the song, “Tattoos on This Town,” made popular by country singer Jason Aldean. In keeping with a spotlight on youth, the parade committee also named Alexavia Zetterberg as co-grand marshal. Alexavia, 9, was given a special recognition youth award in January by Ramona Chamber of Commerce.
Photos by Carol Kinney
The Barnett Elementary School student is the daughter of Regina and John Zetterberg. Also headlining the parade will be Ramona Rodeo Queen Brittney Phillips. A Ramona resident, the 20-year-old Grossmont College student has also served as Ramona Rodeo Junior Queen in 2010, Poway Rodeo Queen in 2011 and 2012, and Miss Rodeo Lakeside in 2013. Her goal is to one day wear the crown of Miss Rodeo California. Georgeson said she is hopeful that the Al Bahr Shrine units will be in this year’s parade. The units consist of clowns, a marching band and old cars of a smaller variety. The committee is looking for
entries to feature autos and trucks, floats, equestrians, bands, clowns, drill teams and heavy equipment, among others. The parade will march down Main Street from 13th to Fifth streets, then turn west to Aqua Lane. It is expected to have at least 95 to 100 entries but could go as high as 120. Deadline to enter is at 5 p.m. on May 5. Applications are available online at www.ramonarodeo.com. n

Choosing a Hospital That’s Best for You By David Sayen
H
ave you ever read a restaurant guide before picking a place for a special dinner? Or a consumer-advice magazine before buying a new car? Wouldn’t it be great if there was a similar guide for looking up the quality of care at hospitals in your area? Well, there is. It’s called “Hospital Compare,” and you can find it on the Medicare website at www.medicare.gov. Hospital Compare contains a wealth of information on how well hospitals perform certain surgeries and treat certain medical conditions. The data varies from hospital to hospital, since some hospitals do a better job of caring for patients than others. The idea behind Hospital Compare is that making qualityof-care information easily available to the public will motivate hospitals to improve their care. Medicare has similar “compare” websites for nursing homes, home health agencies and dialysis facilities. You can search Hospital Compare by ZIP Code, city or state. The data you’ll find are intended to provide a snapshot
of the quality of care at more than 4,000 Medicare-certified hospitals throughout the United States. You don’t have to be a Medicare beneficiary to use Hospital Compare — it’s open to everyone and it’s free of charge. If you’re having a medical emergency, go to the nearest hospital. But if you have time to plan a surgery, or if you have a condition such as heart disease and you know you’ll need hospital care in the future, talk to your doctor about the local hospital that best meets your needs. Find out which hospitals your doctor works with and which hospitals he or she thinks give the best care for your condition. If you’re a Medicare beneficiary, ask if the hospitals participate in Medicare.
At that point, you may want to spend some time on Hospital Compare. The site shows the rates at which hospitals provide recommended care for patients being treated for heart attack, heart failure and pneumonia, and for patients having surgery. It also displays information on hospital outcome measures. These include the rate at which Medicare patients treated for heart attack, heart failure and pneumonia had to be readmitted to the hospital with complications, and 30-day risk-adjusted death rates. (The 30-day period is used because this is the time period when deaths are most likely to be related to the care patients received in the hospital.) With Hospital Compare, you can see how often a hospital’s patients get certain serious conditions that could have been prevented if the hospital followed procedures based on best practices and scientific evidence. The conditions include pressure
sores, post-operative blood clots, post-surgical falls, accidental cuts and tears, and post-surgical blood infections. Such problems kill and injure thousands of people every year. In addition, you’ll find results from patient satisfaction surveys, such as how well patients thought the hospital controlled their pain and how well doctors and nurses communicated with them. Hospital Compare is no substitute for talking with your

ON MEMORY’S BACK TRAIL The Woodward Family By Darrell Beck
H
arlan J. Woodward (1875-1961), son of Simon Barker Woodward of Des Moines, Iowa, married Dora Zell Mechling in 1897, and came to Ramona in 1907.Their six children were Albert Arthur, Harry Wilfred, Frances Ramona Lego, Barker Paul, Guy Burton and Lela Otila Harrison-Hamlin-Woodall. Harlan was involved with farming and dairy operations, including a number of odd jobs, and at one time he was postmaster of Ramona. Harlan’s brother, Wilfred E. Woodward (1870-1943), of Jasper County, Iowa, came to Ramona in 1896. He had a dairy and creamery, served as the constable for a while, was a Ramona Town Hall Trustee, and helped organize the State Bank of Ramona. Wilfred married Adelaide Evans in 1903, and they had no children. Harlan and Dora’s eldest son, Dr. (Albert) Arthur Woodward (1895-1985), completed high school in Ramona and went to University of California, Berkeley, embarking on a long and distinguished career. He served in the U.S. Army during World War I, worked at the Smithsonian Institution in Washington D.C., spent 26 years with the Los Angeles County Museum as chief curator, and served with Admiral Byrd and the Office of Strategic Services during World War II. Arthur was a noted archaeologist, anthropologists’ consultant and prolific author of history and Indian culture. He wrote books and articles for quarterlies and popular Western magazines, including “The Brand Book,” published by the Los Angeles Corral of Westerners. From 193536, he even found time to contribute many local newspaper articles about the history of the Santa Maria Valley and adjacent regions. His columns, titled “Out
of the Past,” were reproduced years later by his younger brother Guy under the title “Dusting off the Past.” Guy B. Woodward (1909-97), who was born in Ramona and attended schools here, married Geneva Larimore in 1926. They had two children, Richard and Kenneth. Guy had a long career in law enforcement and as a motorcycle cop in Oceanside and El Centro. He returned to Ramona, and upon retirement, became involved with the Ramona Pioneer Historical Society and served as a Ramona Town Hall Trustee. He was instrumental in development of the local museum, located in the old Verlaque House, and added to the existing collection of historical artifacts. After Guy Woodward’s death, Kenneth Woodward took over the reins of the museum.
young boy. A quick learner, ambitious and with an analytical mind, he was eventually put in charge of keeping track of every item in the store. Kirkman continues to participate in civic duties in many ways, but has excelled as President of the Ramona Town Hall Board of Trustees. Due to his efforts and that of the other trustees — along with public-supported fundraisers, honorary mayors’ efforts and volunteers — the restoration of the 1894 historic structure to its original condition has made great progress. Woody Kirkman and his wife, Dawn Kirkman, now own and operate a family business, W.T. Kirkman Lanterns, Inc., a major Ramona manufacturer, doing a large volume of business nationwide. n

Over the years, Woodward’s Feed and Supply grew into an all-purpose general store that became known as a truly unique and important institution that carried almost everything, including hardware, paint, arms and ammunition, Western wear, Indian jewelry, hats, bee supplies, stoves, lamps, saddles and tack, tools, antiques and many hard-to-find products. Much to the lament of many local customers, Woodward’s closed its doors for good in 1995. The Dusty Trail The discovery was a significant roadblock and left the project at a dead-end. “It was a huge disappointment, especially for John Degenfelder, who considered this his pet project,” said Morgan. RTA founder John Degenfelder refuses to give up on the old road. “It’s been 20 years in the making,” he said. Believing it can be dusted off and given new purpose, Degenfelder sees the trail as a valuable resource for the public. “I know County Parks would love to open it. But I’m not so sure about Fish and Wildlife,” he said, recognizing that certain areas have stricter regulations when it comes to flora and fauna. But in more recent discussions with San Diego County Supervisor Dianne Jacob, Degenfelder received encouragement. In an exclusive statement made to Ramona Home Journal, Jacob said, “Old Survey Road 97 is not only a link to our history, but it links the Ramona Grasslands to the San Pasqual Valley on a beautiful stretch of our backcountry. It’s important that we do all we can to preserve it and to make it as

accessible as possible for the public to enjoy.”
existing cattle pose no conflict to opening it to the public.
Old Survey Road 97
Morgan says opening the road would be a matter of unlocking a few gates and repositioning a small portion of the trail, near the tail end, to accommodate a property owner who had shown previous support for the historic designation. “Right now, we need to raise awareness,” he said, adding that farmers and ranchers currently use the road, and that even

“There’s no such thing as a bad idea,” he added. “Only bad timing.” At present day, the RTA is pursuing other avenues, including having the trail designated a historic point of interest at the state and national levels. While the RTA waits optimistically, they envision the dust on Old Survey Road 97 will soon be converted into happy trails. n

Possible Pet Problems? If you are wondering why your pet has developed certain sensitivities take a look at three common sources that may be affecting your cat or dog. • Outdoor pollutants. Pollen, grasses and other seasonal allergens are prevalent sources for pet sensitivities. If you are concerned, consider a trip to the veterinarian to determine your best course of action. • Food may be another trigger that requires some guidance. Pet health and nutrition specials suggest people that suspect pets are suffering from a food-related sensitivity, try replacing their food with one geared towards animals with specific dietary needs. Certain brands can help mitigate health concerns and boost a pet’s immunity. • Indoor allergens, including dust mites and mold spores, can also be taking their toll. Clean your

s Top Nails and Spa staff members prepare to celebrate their first anniversary, they get ready to give back to their customers and the community. Run by the Huynh family, Top Nails offers a variety of manicure and pedicure services along with waxing and facial services. Their plan is to donate 10 percent of every purchase of services during the entire month of May to local organizations of their customers’ choice. “We wanted to give back to the
