hen Richard Gerow Pitchford Jr. began collecting snow villages more than 16 years ago, he had no idea he would own nearly half of the entire collection. “I started collecting the snow
villages at my mom’s suggestion,” he said, describing how he saw pieces perched in a department store window and was instantly intrigued. He purchased a few items, then began receiving them as gifts. “My collection really got going, and my family would buy new ones for me
several times a year,” he said. The bulk of his 722 pieces are miniature ceramic homes, barns, churches, schools and diners. Not included in the head count are miniature figures such as people, cars, light posts, livestock and landscape that garnish each structure, helping to create a sentimental theme. Manufactured by Department 56, The Original Snow Village collection was first introduced in the late 1970s, and is based on a small country town in Minnesota. The structures themselves vary in size between five and 15 inches, and most have see-through windows that glisten when illuminated. Once placed together, they create a neighborhood similar to Ramona — minus the snow. Pitchford has a dairy farm, town center, church, school and a “Last Stop” gas station, complete with a ceramic outhouse. He says that some of the items come with lights, but he prefers
to use a strand of lights to illuminate select dwellings. He describes the glossy, porcelain pieces as somewhat of a retirement investment. “Pieces range between $55 and $1,600, depending on how rare or breakable they are.” Today, there are thousands of items in the collection, including some modern-day structures, such as a McDonalds and Chick-fil-A restaurant, as well as a Harley Davidson building. Though the Christmas-themed items remain the most popular, there is a growing Halloween collection. Pieces have also branched off into other collections, such as the Dickens Village Series. Based on the works of author Charles Dickens, some of the items from this collection resemble those described in Dickens’ books, including the town where fictional characters Ebenezer Scrooge and Tiny

Higher credit criteria is often required for a solar lease than a home purchase, so a buyer may qualify for a loan to buy your house but may not qualify to take over the lease. This conundrum is the reason you need to make sure that your agent writes the offer (if you’re a buyer) or counteroffer (if you are a seller) to protect your interests. If done incorrectly, you or your broker could be on the hook to buy out the solar lease for your buyer. Or if you are a buyer and you don’t qualify to transfer the lease, then you may lose your deposit. Since the lease is recorded on the title, the new buyer must qualify for the house payment plus the lease payment, even though that payment would technically be considered “utility” costs. So, where a buyer might qualify for a maximum home loan of $350,000, for instance, an additional $250 lease payment might actually lower the maximum home price by as much as $50,000 dollars, depending on current interest rates. The lease becomes a recorded lien upon installation, and the leasing company must agree to subordinate their place in line on the title of your house, which could be a potential issue of concern when refinancing. The homeowner must be able to find and get the lease company to respond to and approve the buyer. Most leases are 20 to 25 years. Despite the claim by many solar companies that solar will add to the value of your home, appraisers do not count any value whatsoever for a solar system because they do not know the life of the system’s parts. Moreover, there is no way to guarantee that the solar company behind the system will still be in business to service it in five, 10 or 25 years, or what maintenance the system would require. The prepaid buyout of a solar lease can be astronomical — monthly payment times number of years left on the lease, less the number of months already paid — and might be almost twice as much as the original lease amount.

“I’ve had a couple of clients lease solar systems,” says Espinoza. “And, although they are happy to have a smaller electric bill, they realize that they may have made a mistake with the way they ‘purchased’ the system by leasing. I have an upcoming listing where the sellers leased a system, which will add $50,000 onto the ‘price’ of their home, since the lease is a lien on the property. “While it is true that the buyers will have only an $85 electric bill, they will essentially pay $50,000 more for the house and have a depreciated asset to show for it at the end of 24 years. I guess only time will tell if buyers will be on board for these leased systems or not.” She adds, “Although having solar on your home might make it more desirable to buyers, if the system is leased, it might be less desirable, and you would have a smaller pool of buyers that would or could qualify to purchase your home.” Espinoza is quick to point out that she is not against solar. On the contrary. “I’m not saying that solar isn’t a good thing to have, but after carefully researching, I have to say that the solar lease may not be the best bet. Readers might want to look into purchasing the system instead. You will receive substantial federal and state tax credits, and when it comes time to sell, you won’t have to deal with another obstacle to your buyer of having to qualify and take over the lease of the system. “If you do decide that the lease is the only way you can go, then make sure you know all the important details. Do your homework. Take your time and get many bids, quotes, etc. Ask lots of questions — who, what, when, how — write them all down and then compare to be sure you understand everything before you sign a contract. It’s your time and your money.” Information provided by Debbie Espinoza of Stage Presence Homes. n

prior to selecting which portion should be used for the top and bottom. Using a 24-inch wreath as an example, she recommended placing three poinsettias somewhat symmetrically before choosing a color theme and focal point. More silk flowers will be needed when working with a larger wreath. “The focal point can be anything,” she said, suggesting a Christmas ornament, silk flower or ceramic piece that would be eye-catching. In addition to demonstrating ribbon weaving techniques, she invited participants to select from an assortment of ribbons and items acquired from local thrift stores. While most supplies were included, participants were encouraged to bring scissors, a hot glue gun, wire clippers and any personal decorations. Slade suggested using a household hair dryer to remove waxy cobwebs as a result of the hot glue gun and recommended people arrange items on the
wreath prior to permanently adhering them. “Be fun, be whimsical,” she encouraged the crafters. “Make a wreath that shows holiday spirit.” To learn about seasonal classes and workshops throughout the year, visit www.sdcl.org/ locations_RM.html. n

Wild West Visits Town Hall By Annette Williams ~ the journal
“The whole evening looked like it stepped right out of Ramona’s history!” That’s according to organizers of the fundraiser for Intermountain Volunteer Fire & Rescue Department (IVFRD), held last month.
The event, “Party Like it’s 1899 in the Wild Wild West,” was hosted by Intermountain’s Hot Spots and brought in $10,250 for the department. More than 100 people attended, most in period costumes, and the Hole in the Wall Gang from Lakeside
made an appearance. “They put on a whole staged gunfight in the patio, and walked around and talked to people all evening long, which was fun,” said Hot Spots member Sharon Greene. A Western-style menu created by John Little Catering
featured whiskey-braised beef. “It was typical of the early days,” said Greene. “They ate very simple food.” Greene noted that people had a good time with the silent and live auctions. “People participated
beautifully,” she said. “That’s where we made a lot of the money.” Annual fundraisers and local support help IVFRD continue providing service to its 125-mile district area. n

Marvelous Miracle for Robotic Rookies
E
By Tracy Rolling ~ the journal
ight weeks ago, a group of 10 kids and two adults took a leap of faith and formed a robotics team as part of the First Lego League (FLL). Now, the rookie team is vying for a spot to compete on a national level. Described as a robotics program for children ranging in age from 9 to 16 who are excited about science and technology, the league offers youngsters an opportunity to find solutions for realworld problem by combining robotics and team-building skills.
Currently, there are more than 200,000 children from more than 70 countries participating in the program. “We are so proud of these kids!” said Elizabeth Stewart, one of the coaches. Three of the 10 team members are Ramona residents Brent Stewart, Cole Jackson and Brett Cassen. Stewart credits her husband, Marty, for his help and co-coach Sanja Zlatanovic for her dedication. The co-ed team represents cultural, social and economic diversity, as well as students attending different schools,

grade levels and even a special-needs child. “It’s unique to be so diverse and still work together so well,” she said. With more than 35 miles between their homes, and some second-language learners, the team had to overcome many obstacles in a short amount of time. Once they settled on a team name — Wild Technos — they established a motto, “Simplicity is bliss.” From there, they began fundraising efforts and purchased an elaborate robotics system created by Lego called “Mindstorm.” Within a couple of weeks, the robotics set was built, but their biggest challenge still lay ahead. As outlined by the FLL, this year’s challenge was for teams to not only identify realistic issues that occur during a natural disaster, but find a viable solution to potentially help in an hour of need. “We talked about earthquakes and storms, but because we live in area that’s so threatened by wildfires, we decided to pursue something

apparatus. He shared some of the technical issues common in the field and happily produced a wish list of items he would like to see addressed. With new information in hand, the team began brainstorming. “Our first idea was really good. So was our second. Then we asked the kids to think bigger, broader, to look at how our ideas might help human life,” she said. Back and forth the kids went to the drawing board until coming up with an idea to install information gauges inside a firefighter’s goggles or facemask.

that might be able to help firefighters,” she said. Their weekly meetings became semi-weekly as the team began researching various aspects of wildfires. They took a field trip to a specialized firehouse where they met with San Diego firefighter Kevin Roof. Reporting critical, up-todate figures about thermal temperature, wind direction and topography, the gauges would give firefighters an opportunity to outsmart the fire and get it under control quicker, thus saving both property and human life. “Since firefighters can’t predict what’s going to happen next, they can use this information to their advantage, on the spot

competition in Eastlake. “We were very impressed at how professional the competition was. The judges were scientists, engineers and decorated people, like a Navy admiral. Even the Mayor of Chula Vista spoke during the
opening ceremonies.” Competing against roughly 25 teams at one of the biggest qualifying tournaments in the county, the rookie team took home the trophy. “We won first place!” said Stewart, describing
how the team automatically advanced to the next level of competition, when they will go up against well-seasoned teams with veteran coaches representing Southern California, about 50 teams in all.
“No matter what happens, it’s been a great learning experience and a miracle for us to have gone this far,” said Stewart. “I’m so proud to be a part of this amazing team.” n

A Holiday Baby
Preparing for a Special Delivery The best way to plan and prepare for a new baby during the holiday season is to research childbirth options. Karen Wallace, a local instructor for the Bradley Method of natural childbirth, says that the classes she and her husband, Jeff Dean, offer are geared toward preparation, so soon-to-be parents will know what to expect. Precious Memories
pecial moments in one’s life, such as an engagement, wedding or the arrival of a baby, can be captured with professional photography. The holidays remind people that time goes by quickly, and it gives them a reason to preserve these memories.
“God was opening up doors,” she says. “This year, everything is falling into my lap, and it’s perfect timing.” Her supportive husband and children have inspired her to do family photography. Her children taught her a lot and have been very patient, letting her take as many pictures as she wants without fuss. “I think they are used to it,” she says, happy to have found inspiration so close to home. The new year is just around the corner, with milestones to be memorialized. But when it comes to photography, Steinberg says, a special occasion isn’t always necessary — just capture the moment with friends and family, before it passes. Before a photo shoot, many questions arise: What shall I wear? How much makeup should I put on? How should I fix my hair? Do I want the photos taken indoors or outdoors? Kristina Steinberg of Forever Photography answers these questions before the photo shoot to put her clients at ease. She says the most important thing to remember is to just have fun. Her tips include not wearing too much eye makeup and being comfortable in what you are wearing. Most of all, she wants her subjects to look natural. Her suggestions for colors to wear for Christmas photos include red, navy and cream. Steinberg’s passion for photography started after she graduated from high school and purchased her first camera. She loved taking pictures of her horses, letting them out to run and photographing them in motion. This sparked it, and she was hooked. She traveled to England, Russia and Israel with her husband and family and began taking pictures of landscapes and architecture — anything that caught her eye — including breathtaking castles. While she has done engagement, wedding and maternity photography, her new desire is photographing family, children and animals. “People love their dogs,” says Steinberg. “And I can get some candid pictures.” She discovered an interest in photographing people when she was asked to take pictures and become a historian at her church, Calvary Chapel Ramona. She chronicled a women’s retreat and a Christmas event at Camp Pendleton, interacting with military families. She found enjoyment in capturing the images of families from a more journalistic point of view.

How to Stuff Yourself During the Holidays and Still Lose Weight
A
By Jim Evans~ the journal
mericans will typically go on an eating binge from Thanksgiving through New Year’s Day, consuming a virtual smorgasbord of rich, delicious, mouthwatering food and beverages, and all the calories that go with them. While reports of holiday weight gain are greatly exaggerated, several studies show that most people do gain an average of at least one pound, which really isn’t a big deal except that it usually doesn’t go away after the holidays. So, how do you maintain — or even lose — weight during the holidays without foregoing all of the gastronomic delights of the season?
Losing weight is not rocket science. If you consume fewer calories, burn more calories than you consume, or any combination thereof, you will lose weight. No ifs, ands or buts about it. So why is it so difficult to lose weight? Because we make it too complicated. We count calories. We count carbs. We count protein. We weigh our food. We buy meal replacements. We eat according to our blood type. We eat according to our personality. We measure our time on the treadmill and our time in the gym. Everything is so restrictive, so calculated, and so disciplined that we soon grow tired of it. So, let’s make it simple. Anyone who follows this easy plan will lose weight during

the holidays or any other time — no exceptions. It’s as easy as 1, 2, 3. 1. Drink — no, chug — a full 8-ounce glass of water when you first get up in the morning as soon as your feet hit the ground, before every meal, before every snack, and before you go to bed at night. This also means that you must chug the water down before you drink that first cup of coffee in the morning, before that cocktail or glass of wine at the office party, and even before you snuggle up with that ice cold beer in front of the boob tube to watch the bowl games. 2. The water should be room temperature or cool — but not cold — from the tap so that you can gulp it right down. No sipping allowed, and no, you can’t use the
water to help you wash down the food, either. 3. Timing is everything. It is critical that you drink the water exactly as described. The underlying principle, of course, is that the water will fill you up. It doesn’t matter how hungry you are or how delicious the food is, you simply cannot eat — or drink — as much if you drink the water first. If you eat less and drink less, you are consuming fewer calories, and hence you will lose weight. If you don’t like the taste of water, flavor it with a slice of lemon or mix it with some flavored, very low-calorie drink mix, such as Crystal Light. Many people, particularly women, will say that they already drink plenty of water, but they are usually “sippers” who sip on bottled water all day long. Remember, it’s not just how much water you drink but how and when you drink it. If you already weigh more than 250 pounds, drink two glasses of water instead one. Many of the popular diet programs are now recommending this same

practice under the guise that their specially-prepared meal plans are actually causing you to lose weight when, in fact, it is the water that is filling you up so that you cannot eat as much. Save your money and just drink the water instead. So, eat as much turkey and trimmings as you want, and have a big piece of pumpkin pie with whipped cream on it. Christmas cookies and homemade fudge? Go for it! However, do not put that first bite of food in your mouth until you chug down the water first. If you do not lose weight on this program, you are not following the plan exactly. And, if you cannot do something as simple as drinking water, you are not serious about losing weight. Period! Why not start your New Year’s resolution early and make it easy on yourself? n
