ou won’t find posters of pop stars or Hollywood vampires on Holly Stallman’s walls. What you will find is a bulletin board on one wall, struggling to support the weight of all of Holly’s medals, awards and newspaper clippings highlighting her stellar career as a sprinter on the Ramona High School Track and Field Team. On the opposite wall hangs a large Olympic banner, serving as a constant reminder of what her ultimate goal is as a track athlete. Between now and her eventual attempt at an Olympic bid, Holly’s parents will probably need to get her a much larger bulletin board. You see, Holly was just a freshman last year at Ramona High. And if her first season as a Bulldog was any indication, every record she set is in jeopardy of being broken again every time she explodes out of the starting blocks. Specializing in the 100 meter and 200 meter sprints, Holly

names Usain Bolt, the sixtime Olympic Gold medalist from Jamaica, as one of her main inspirations. Bolt, who currently holds the world records in both the 100m and 200m events, is constantly breaking his own records, setting the bar further and further out of reach for anyone who may want to break it someday. Holly spent her freshman year doing the same, breaking Rose Kalabasa’s 36-year-old RHS record time of 12.50 seconds in the 100m sprint, setting the new mark at 12.47 seconds at the Valley League

Finals. The record had been tied two other times in the 1980s, but Holly set the new mark to beat. She then broke that time in the CIF Finals, running the 100 meter dash in just 12.44 seconds, earning her a sixth-place finish. Her progression in the 200 meter race, her favorite event overall, was just as impressive. Again, Holly overtook Kalabasa’s 1977 record in the 200 meter, setting the new Ramona High School record at 25.91 seconds. Holly says she prefers See RHS Freshman Phenom continued on page 11

When ninth-grader Kristyna Dechenne began working on an interior design assignment toward the end of the Ramona High School year, little did she know it would be a ribbon winner at the San Diego County Fair. That’s because her teacher Nahid Nikzad saw the potential in Dechenne’s poster board project, even before it was completed. “I was nowhere near finished, and really I didn’t know what she was talking about when she said it was good enough to enter into a competition,” said Dechenne, whose assignment was to create a hotel suite using designs of her choice. “I wanted to create something extravagant that if I were a guest at the hotel, I would enjoy.” She decided on a rococo style, an 18th-century artistic movement where the décor is jocular, florid and graceful. She selected a Directoire

theme, which is a period fashion that focuses on a particular architectural style using minimal carvings, grained surfaces and decorative paintings. Tying the project together, she chose a redactor design, using a variety of colors and floral patterns that are complimentary. “These styles are an accumulation of different time periods from all around the world,” she said, telling how some of the most famous designs are still used today and received their name from interior designers who were the best of the best. Dechenne said she’s always had a passion for interior design and thoroughly enjoyed learning about the different genres, textiles, construction techniques and finishes in Nikzad’s class. Initially, she outlined her project on the computer using a graphics design program. “We had to print out a floor See Go-Getter Gets First continued on page 7

complete after tending to a variety of ailments for 12 dogs. Emergencies could keep the doors open longer. Dr. Wood, a veterinarian for 35 years, served several years as a pet surgeon before coming to Ramona to be a general practitioner. He’s been at Adobe Animal Hospital for 24 years. “We moved to this (bigger) location about six years ago,” he said. “We have boarding and isolation areas for surgical patients and the sick.” Staff veterinarians on duty are doctors Michelle Greer and Michelle Metcalf, handling advanced diagnostics, therapy, surgical procedures and hospitalization when needed. “Largest part of our clientele are people we have been seeing for years,” he said. His patients come from all over the valley and even San Diego and Poway. “I had one person come in from Arizona for a dog surgery.” Although a national survey indicates cats are more popular as pets, he said Ramona bucks that trend. Because of the rural area, he said their primary patients are dogs, usually bigger ones, 50 to 60 pounds. “Pets are brought in with bite wounds, lacerations, sprains or strains, to foxtails in a nose,” he said. “Dogs don’t know to stay away from rattlesnakes. We see a lot of that.” Medical attention also includes what he describes as pocket pets and companion animals. “That includes mice, guinea pigs, rabbits — those type of creatures,” he said. The line is drawn on reptiles — other veterinary specialists take care of those.

Same goes for goats, pigs, cattle and sheep. “It’s good to stick with what you know and give people value for whatever it costs to come in,” he said. “We try to do as much as we can while you wait. Make the diagnosis and get started quickly and send it home. “Animals that have been sick for a while, have GI (gastrointestinal) disease — vomiting, diarrhea — might need to be hospitalized to get their fluid levels back up. “The same things that take down humans in latter years — cancer, heart and kidney disease. What people get, our pets get.” He commented that repairing a dog’s broken leg is not much more difficult than a human’s. “We try to treat them with splints and casts, but if this

Water Tanks to be Drained, Repaired By Ruth Lepper ~ the journal

Two of Ramona Municipal Water District’s large holding tanks will be drained while repairs are being made. Work on the Julian Forebay Reservoir will begin in August, while the Poway Forebay Reservoir will not get under way until January or February of next year, according to John Brean, water superintendent for the district. The interior of the tanks will be recoated, along with other necessary repairs. The total cost of the two projects is $335,320, which is under the

budgeted amount of $350,000. The contract was awarded to the low bidder, J. Colon Coatings, Inc. District Engineer Mike Metts told the directors that the work comes with a oneyear warranty. In other business, the directors acknowledged receipt of a reserve fire engine from the county. Battalion Chief Saul Villagomez said the 23-yearold engine will belong to the county but will be used exclusively by Ramona firefighters. “It’s owned by the county, insured by the county and

maintained by the county,” Villagomez told the directors. “The equipment will be furnished by the county.” The engine will be in reserve for when the department’s present engines are down for maintenance work, he added. The board also set a public hearing for Aug. 13 for discussion on the adoption of the fire mitigation fee, multiyear facilities and equipment plan. Once the resolution is approved by the directors, the revenue it will generate is estimated at $35,000. n

Protect Your Home Against Wildfires this Summer

T

he San Diego Regional Fire Foundation offers steps homeowners can take to help protect their home against wildfires. • Make sure firefighters can find you, and that they can get their equipment onto your property so they can defend your home against wildfires. Post an address sign at the junction of your driveway and the public road, and then make sure a fire truck can fit on your driveway. The truck needs at least 13 ½ feet of vertical clearance and 12 feet of horizontal clearance. • Dry grass is where most wildfires start. It ignites easily and quickly carries fire to places where the flames can cause damage to a home. To

reduce the risk of having a grass fire on your property, cut the grass to a height of four inches. It should be mowed at least 30 feet around the home, along the roadside and along the driveway. Also rake dry tree needles and leaves from beneath decks and exterior stairways. Tree needles and dry leaves ignite as easily as dry grass, and can be dangerous if they are burning someplace where they can’t easily be seen or extinguished. • Keep it green around your home. If plants are green, they are generally healthy and their leaves have plenty of water, which greatly reduces the chance that the plants will ignite easily or burn. • Move firewood and lumber piles

at least 30 feet from the house during the summer. Better yet, put firewood and lumber inside an enclosed shed. Simply put, keep all flammable material away from your home.

piles. Embers are hot, and when they land on something that will burn, they will cause a fire. Fortunately, there are many ways to protect your home against embercaused fires. Here are three things that are easy to do: • Clean dry needles and leaves and other flammable debris out of rain gutters. And while you are up there, clean needles and leaves off the roof, too, which is especially important if your home has an untreated shake roof. • Install 1/8-inch metal mesh screen on exterior vents. Putting screens on all attic vents is vital, but it’s important on foundation vents, too. n

Guard Against Embers During a wildfire, the air is full of embers — little bits of burning wood, leaves, tree needles and stalks of grass — that can land on or around your home and cause trouble. Embers are the No. 1 cause of home destruction in wildfires. It isn’t the big flames ripping through a forest. It is the little stuff. Embers land in rain gutters that are full of dry tree needles and leaves. They float inside the house through attic vents. They drift into open carports and into firewood and lumber

Go-Getter Gets First plan and come up with a couple of pictures of what the suite was going to look like.” From there, she added multiple drawings until it was time to create the final draft. When she started adding the finishing touches such as carpet, paint, curtains and furniture, the onedimensional project came to life. “Even though we put it on a poster board, we were able to attach swatches of materials so Mrs. Nikzad had an idea of what the finished suite would look like.” Dechenne used eclectic items in lieu of traditional pieces, and gave an example of how she used a large floor lamp, as opposed to a bedside table lamp. She also used vines, leaves and flowers on the rug, sofa and bed for an elegant blend of sophistication and functionality. “I’ve always enjoyed drawing, especially the details.” When Dechenne was young, her mom, Amy Ward, was a realtor. It gave her the opportunity to see a variety of houses and develop a natural eye for interior design. “I can look at a house and imagine its potential.” Dechenne described how upon completion of her project, she presented it to the class and then Nikzad placed it safely in a closet. A few days later, she agreed to

enter it into the San Diego County Fair competition, and her teacher gave her a ticket to the fair. When she and her family attended the fair in late June, they went in search of the project. They were surprised it wasn’t hung in the same area as all the others. “We were slightly confused and asked someone where could it be.” The family was redirected to the opposite side of room. As they approached the wall, they couldn’t believe their eyes. Next to the project were two ribbons — one for first place, the other for Best in Class. “All of us were in such shock,” said Ward, explaining how it’s still sinking in what the ribbons really mean. Dechenne remembers eating a funnel cake, and tells how her mom kept repeating, “I don’t think you understand what this means.” But when spectators started asking her questions about various design elements, she realized her project had made quite an impression. Dechenne hopes to take the advanced version of interior design in her junior year, and says she didn’t have room for the fun and creative elective on her sophomore class schedule. Ward describes her daughter as someone who’s always been a real go-getter, “But this time she took it to a whole new level.” n

Hotshot Prayer Spreads like Wildfire girl, who grew up a thirdgeneration fireman’s daughter, then married a Hotshot firefighter,” she said. “I wrote a prayer 11 years ago, and here I am today.” But the humble girl that grew up in Ramona is now being considered somewhat of a hero for writing a prayer that has had a profound effect on the lives of the Hotshots and their families. “Hotshots are a cut above the rest,” she said, describing how the specially trained firefighters often hike a couple miles into the heart

very evening, one local woman prays for firefighters around the world. Her name is Patricia (Trish) Huston. And while her name may seem unfamiliar to many, a prayer she wrote 11 years ago is spreading like a wildfire throughout the nation. It’s a prayer for Hotshot firefighters and it is being read in remembrance of the 19 Hotshots who recently perished fighting a wildfire in Prescott, Ariz. “I’m just a little country

of a wildfire. They carry no water, only chainsaws and other tools used to create a cutline or firebreak. The job is physically and emotionally demanding, and very different from fighting structural fires. In 2002, when her husband, Jim Huston, joined the Laguna Hotshot U.S. Forest Service, she realized there wasn’t a prayer for wildfire firefighters. She was inspired to jot down a few simple verses, and after Jim made some minor tweaks by adding Hotshot lingo, the couple was pleased with the end result.

read on national television by Prescott’s Mayor Marlin Kuykendall, was reprinted on T-shirts as a method to raise funds for the fallen firefighters, and was recently read during the memorial tribute for the Prescott firefighters. Jim Huston was in attendance, representing his crew, along with a representative from each of the 108 Hotshot crews. He called it a solemn moment when the Hotshots crew representatives sat together and listened to the

Help us cut enough line, For this blaze to stop. Let my skills and hands be firm and quick. Let me find those safety zones, as we hit and lick. occasionally the world — leaving their families for months at a time to help put out a wildfire. Although he did not personally know any of the Prescott firefighters, he said, “We cut lines together sideby-side with the Granite guys. Our boots have walked over the same dirt. We are a brotherhood, and it’s hard for us to wrap our heads around this tragedy.” Grateful Jim was home the day they heard the news about the Prescott crew, Trish remembers thinking, “There’s a wife tonight that doesn’t have this. Tonight she’s alone, and my heart broke so hard for that.” But both know the dangers of job, especially Trish, whose grandfather was the Battalion Chief in Julian in the 1960s and ‘70s, and whose father served 32 years with Cal Fire, working on both the ground and in the air. “The Hotshot’s Prayer” author Trish Huston, right, with husband, Jim Photo by Annette Williams Huston, and children Thomas and Hannah.

In 2007, she published the prayer on her blog, www. wildlandfirefighterwives. blogspot.com, and said, “Truthfully, I had no clue that God would use my prayer in this way. I don’t deserve any glory, only God does. My husband and the other Hotshot firefighters, they’re the real heroes!” Huston’s prayer was found online, and permission was sought to repost it on Facebook as a tribute to the fallen Hotshots. When he conveyed the prayer’s history, he came to understand there was a reason it sat for so long. “In the past, Hotshots have lost half a crew, but this was the single worst fatality we’ve experienced since the organization was created in the 1940s,” he said. He says that they earned their name for going to the hottest part of the fire and will often travel the country — and

childhood, she’s not sure if the job was as dangerous back then, or if her parents, Kathy and Ron Serabia, did a good job minimizing any jeopardy her father faced. “I’ll be honest, it’s nervewracking at times,” she said, honored to be Jim’s other half and grateful to have technology to ease some of her fears. “We are blessed to see him

on Webcam and can look up his coordinates on Google Maps at a moment’s time,” she said, explaining how her mother would have to wait by the phone to receive a threeminute call from their father who had stood in a long payphone line. Now the Huston children, Thomas, 4, and Hannah, five months, can wave to daddy, even when he’s on the job.

“I guess you could say my grandma was an old-school firefighter’s wife, and I’m the modern version.” True to that trend, Trish is close with other Hotshot wives. And like the military community, they have developed a sisterhood where they can vent, share, laugh and cry together. She also blogs, sharing her hopes and fears with other Hotshot

They continue their prayers for the Hotshot brotherhood, as Jim, a superintendent now with a crew of his own, is in the process of fighting the Chariot Fire.

RHS Freshman Phenom 200 meter race because it allows her to “get up to speed.” The level of competition in the CIF Finals brought out the best in her again in the 200 meter, and she set a new personal and school record of 25.71 seconds. The competition, according to Holly, is what truly motivates her. She is always aware of whom she will be up against in each meet, and she likes to compete against the best. She is not the only talented 16-year-old in the San Diego high school track and field scene, but she welcomes the challenges that she is likely to face in the years to come while running for RHS. Holly credits her school coaches with constantly correcting her starts, which she says was key to her recordbreaking performances. She also recognizes the importance of a good, healthy diet and exercise routine, as well as staying dedicated to her sport, even in the off-season. Just last month, on June 8, Holly entered herself into an open event held at the Olympic Training Center, in Chula Vista. It wasn’t until she arrived to compete in the USA Track & Field Association-sanctioned event that she realized she would be racing against college-level athletes. Although she missed her own personal bests in the 100 and 200 meter races that day, her 12.8-second 100m, and her 26.06-second 200m results were good enough to earn her seventh place in each of the open events. Later this summer, Holly will be

staying in the dorms on campus at UCLA for one week, attending the Elite High School Sprints & Hurdles Camp. She says that improving her form is her No. 1 goal in her training these days, as she sets her sights on another record-breaking track season at Ramona High. Besides the 100 and 200 meter dashes, Holly also competes on the 4x100 meter and 4x400 meter relay teams. When she is not in her running shoes, Holly is also a member of the RHS Cheer Team. Her parents, Janet and Ken, could not be more proud of their daughter, providing her all of the support and opportunities needed to forge a highcaliber athlete. Having been Ramona residents for more than 18 years, they recognize and appreciate the amount of time that those records stood before Holly came along. Holly’s younger brother, Gabe, plays football, does CrossFit Kids at Brand X, and has his own track and field aspirations as a shot put thrower. Holly’s hard work and dedication are a great representation of her hometown, and hopefully one day they will earn her the opportunity to represent her entire country. If you want to see history in the making, come on out and support the RHS track and field team next season. But if you are hoping to get a good look at the sophomore superstar Holly Stallman, don’t blink, or you just might miss her. n
