he world just celebrated Mother’s Day. But for one local family, Mother’s Day has taken on a whole new meaning. That’s because they’ve become a surrogate mother for an orphaned buffalo named Buck. “Buck was a twin,” explains Ken and Denice Childs, who own and operate Star B Ranch nestled in the hills of Santa Ysabel.

Eric, Violet and Brody March.

He was born on March 10, but abandoned by his mother and brother. “It’s rare for a buffalo to have twins, and when they do, one of them is likely to be orphaned,” says Denice,

explaining that Buck spent two nights on his own in the pasture before a neighbor noticed him on his way to work. Their son-in-law, Eric March, along with the neighbor’s wife, set out to find the lone buffalo. As soon as they located his cries of distress, they radioed Denice, who rallied help from Ryan Burnett and Miguel Ramirez. Together they tossed a

research their journals where they had documented past cases of buffalos in need of human intervention. Additionally, they sought advice from local veterinarian Christopher George, D.V.M. “Dr. George has been wonderful,” says Denice, telling how the family acquired goat’s milk and began aroundthe-clock feedings. Unlike cattle or other livestock, buffalo eat more frequently but consume smaller quantities because they are part of a wild herd and are constantly on the move. Ken and Denise are hopeful Buck was able to ingest some colostrum, a form of nutrient-rich milk produced by the mother immediately following birth. They have been raising buffalo for 34 years, and most of the herd is used for breeding purposes. Many are sold to ranches throughout the western United States, and some become ribbon winners and sold at auction. A few are used for buffalo meat, which is packaged, labeled and available for sale at the ranch by appointment. Since it is the middle of calving season, they anticipate that as many as 20 new buffalo will soon join the existing herd, and have incorporated Buck’s rigorous feeding schedule into their daily routine. They praise their ranch help, along with their

Fourth Year a Success for Bluegrass Fest By Annette Williams ~ the journal

R

amona Bluegrass and Old West Fest in early May was a success, organizers say. “Our basic formula is working really well,” says co-chair Rob Lewallen. “Everybody liked it, and we’re growing every year.” This year’s festival boasted 16 top-quality bluegrass performers and groups, and attendance of about 2,000, with 55 on-site campers. “The Old West

encampment was very much a success,” Lewallen said. “Some of our folks taking part have artifacts that can only be found in museums. It’s a very historical aspect we will be growing.” Also increasing this year was the number of activities geared toward kids. “Our goal is to grow as large as our sister festival in Vista in August — about 200 campers and 4,500-plus in attendance,” he said. “Before long we hope to reach those numbers.” n

viation enthusiasts were already patiently waiting at Ramona Airport May 6 when Wings of Freedom aircraft touched down to spend three days on display. The fly-in was delayed for a few hours by rain and wind. But unlike last year when stormy weather forced the tour to skip Ramona entirely, this year, it was a go. Ramona Home Journal publisher Darrel Kinney made the Wings of Freedom flight from McClellanPalomar Airport to Ramona, where the vintage aircraft were available for tours and 30-minute flights. “What an incredible experience,” said Kinney, who flew aboard a B-24 when the tour made its way to town. “Not only to fly on a historic aircraft, but I had the opportunity to fly with four World War II veterans. Two of them shared what it was like when they were in their early 20s, getting the opportunity to pilot these wonderful planes. They made great docents.” Kinney served in the Marine Corps in the mid1960s, and his father served in the Navy during World War II and went on to finish his career in the Army. “Growing up military gave me an appreciation for the job our service men and women have. As a kid, we always

the experience greatly. It was so neat to fly in a piece of history.” Guests were able to explore and learn about the planes, inside and out. Many aircraft are the sole remaining examples of their type still flying. n

Many of San Diego County’s biggest and deadliest wildfires, including the 2003 and 2007 firestorms, have started in our backcountry in the fall.” The control tower was established in response to a 1995 incident in Ramona, in which three people died in an aerial collision involving federal firefighting aircraft. The Cal Fire air base at Ramona Airport responds to more than 400 calls a year. During major wildfires, up to 18 firefighting aircraft can operate out of the airfield. In addition, the airport handles more than 155,000 general aviation operations annually. n

Updating an Outdated Kitchen is Easier than You Think!

W

ouldn’t it be nice to not have to rearrange everything in your cabinets just to get to one mixing bowl in the back? Ever found yourself on your hands and knees, reaching into the dark and distant back lower shelf of your kitchen cabinets looking for a flour sifter you know you own, but haven’t used in so long you can’t remember where you put it? Then you discover where you put that old coffee bean grinder you were looking for last week! There are many ways to improve your kitchen’s functionality, and it doesn’t always take a lot of money or a major remodel. You only have so much cabinet space in your kitchen and in most cases up to 50% is not accessible and ends up being poorly utilized. Most kitchens are designed by builders and designed in ways to lower building costs. Save yourself the aches and pains of getting on your hands and knees. Accessorize your kitchen and make it more organized, accessible, and a much better work environment for the whole family.

At Kitchen Barn, here in Ramona, we really enjoy showing people how many options they have when they want to update their kitchen. We start with a no charge, no obligation visit to your home. We’ll have a discussion about what you love and hate about your current kitchen. We take measurements, make notes about all of your electrical outlets, appliances and fixtures, and then we usually make an appointment for you to come into our showroom where we can advise you on what solutions fit your needs and your budget. We even have a 3D computer system so you can see what we are talking about. It is a smart way to find out what you can do to put your kitchen back to work for you and your family. Come by or give us a call, we look forward to helping you! Matt Taft, Owner

The U.S. Department of Transportation announced May 10 that the Ramona Airport traffic control tower and similar facilities across the nation would remain in operation at least through Sept. 30, according to a statement issued by the office of San Diego County Supervisor Dianne Jacob. “The decision to keep the Ramona Airport tower open for now is a step in the right direction,” said Jacob. “But the federal government needs to come up with a long-term budget fix. ow many people are familiar with the Bible story of David versus Goliath, where David, a mere boy, defeats Goliath, an enormous giant? The same could be said of the brave hikers and horseback riders who decide to take on Mt. Gower Open Space Preserve and conquer its picturesque trails. Standing a whopping 2,650 feet above sea level, Mt. Gower is located at the far end of San Diego Country Estates. From San Vicente Road, visitors can follow Gunn Stage Road until it reaches a dead end. A dirt driveway leads to an adequate staging area equipped with a restroom and a wooden kiosk that highlights portions of the 1,574 acres of pristine wilderness, and more than 12 round-trip miles of trail. To the right of the trailhead is a sandy path designed for novice hikers. It has few inclines and leads to a

dynamic viewing area. The trail to the left begins with soft dirt and graduates to a rocky terrain. This trail winds back and forth, up and down, and along the side of the mammoth mountain all the way to the top. Christine Griffin, former president of the Ramona Trails Association (RTA) says Mt. Gower is a challenging trail. “One of the biggest mistakes people make is not being prepared,” said Griffin, cautioning that people should plan ahead, wear appropriate clothing, use a walking stick when necessary, hike in sturdy shoes, and take plenty of fluids to stay hydrated. “Park visitors should also be on the lookout for rattlesnakes and check weather conditions before they venture out,” she said, noting that the RTA website at www.ramonatrails.org is a valuable resource. In addition to access maps and photos, the website gives detailed information

about area trails so people can determine their own limitations. “The same thing applies with horses. ‘Moderate’ depends not just on how good of shape you are in, but also your horse. Even expert riders might find parts of Mt. Gower difficult.” Griffin referred to the frequency of switchbacks, unstable groundcover, and a rise in elevation of about 1,000 feet in fewer than five miles. She recommends beginners try a portion of the trail, and says, “For avid hikers and the sure-footed, Mt. Gower is a great alternative to the more popular trails. There’s minimal traffic, plus the skyscape is spectacular.” With large boulders, driedup ravines and occasional streams as part of the native topography, Mt. Gower Preserve offers breathtaking views of Ramona and the Cleveland National Forest. Some of the plant life includes chamise, sugar bush,

ceanothus, mountain mahogany, manzanita, black sage, and chaparral yucca, whose scientific name is Hesperoyucca whipplei agavaceae. Not to be mistaken for the century

Chaparral yucca can be seen alongside Mt. Photos by Tracy Rolling Gower trails.

National Trails Day is Saturday, June 1. The day originated in the late 1980s as a way to promote and celebrate the importance of more than 200,000 miles of trails in the United States. It is the nation’s largest celebration of trails, and

plant, the chaparral yucca blooms after five years or when the plant reaches full maturity. Its large, stalk-like flower erupts from a cluster of spiky, low-lying leaves, and can be seen throughout Ramona from midApril until early summer, when the bell-shaped petals begin to drop. Just before the plant reaches the end of its life, it produces offshoots — new plants — near its base, which grow and reproduce. Wildlife is also evident. Some of the creatures include coyotes, raccoons and foxes. Resident birds are ravens, scrub jays, lesser goldfinches, red-tailed hawks, and on occasion, a golden eagle. Mt. Gower is considered a nonmotorized trail, with an onsite park ranger near the staging area. Park hours are 8 a.m. to sunset daily, and during the month of August, the park closes due to extreme heat. Though the trail to the top is not well-marked with signage, a clearcut path leads the way. There are few shady spots, and fewer places to stop and rest. But for those who feel courageous, like David, Mt. Gower is waiting to be conquered! n various events will take place across the country, including hikes; bike and horseback rides; paddling trips; bird-watching; geocaching; gear demonstrations; and service projects. n

ore than 200 Ramona Girl Scouts attended Camp Winacka in Pine Hills near Julian recently for an adventurous outdoors weekend. The camp, presented by the local service unit, was themed after the popular “Hunger Games” novels. The campground is located on 625 acres and offers a varying terrain leading through the Cuyamaca Mountains, including two small lakes and camping facilities. “Our goal for camp this year was to empower the girls and teach each troop valuable skills that are necessary for outdoor camping,” said Kristy

Parker, co-camp director and Brownie Troop 8848 leader. Diane Silva, leader of Troop 8775, also co-directed the camp. The Scouts participated in on-site activities, including archery, a challenge course, games, team building, arts and crafts, and trail hiking and exploring. Each troop performed “kapers,” which is a Scouting term for meal setting, song leading and clean-up chores. “Even Daisy Scouts (the youngest at the camp) set tables and served food,” said Parker. “It was amazing for the leaders to see what their girls could do if given the direction and opportunity.”

The campers ranged from kindergartners all the way up to eighthgraders. Younger girls stayed in the more modernized cabins and learned about common areas and sharing space, while the older girls stayed in canvas tent cabins and screened cabins for a more rustic experience. Each evening was accompanied by the traditional Scout campfire, where songs were sung, stories told, and each engaged in “SWAPS,” exchanging craft items among troopers. “We were thrilled to be able to offer the opportunities and experiences that

were provided for such an affordable price this year,” said Parker. “The entire weekend, including meals and campground, was only $20 per girl.” At the completion of the campout, each Scout earned a camp patch and camper T-shirt for participating. n

RLS School Announces Five-Year Growth Plan

T

he school board of RLS Christian Day School announced a new vision to develop a fresh and technically modern look for the school, including a name change to encompass all Christian faiths. A team of dedicated parent and staff volunteers is in the process of developing a five-year growth plan that seeks to improve student enrollment, campus equipment, curriculum and classroom technology. Volunteers and staff, each with unique talents and knowledge, meet regularly to implement these improvements. Financial assistance to upgrade school technology is coming in from businesses,

individuals, fundraisers and grants. The team has already secured enough funding for the board to begin entertaining upgrades, such as Singapore Math, a Spanish curriculum, and iPads for

daughter, Amie March, her husband, Eric, and their grandchildren, Brody and Violet, for taking turns bottlefeeding the baby buffalo, who was named by Amie when

she recognized Buck had buckteeth. Eight-year-old Brody says his favorite part about raising a buffalo is kicking a soccer ball to Buck and having him kick it back. He also enjoys the grunts and weird noises the wild animal makes.

Ken says, “Even though Buck is adapting to our world, he requires constant supervision. Safety is our number-one priority. Buck might act like the family

dog at times, but he’s a wild animal and can be very dangerous.” Denice agrees, telling how when Buck gets a little frisky or eager to play, you have to steer clear of his growing horns, lanky legs and bulky body.

third through sixth grades this fall. “The entire school is buzzing with renewed excitement and energy that seems to be growing every day,” said Joe Oviatt, Currently, Buck weighs 120 pounds. His milk intake has increased while the number of daily bottles has been reduced, and he has begun grazing. He is projected to weigh 800 pounds by his six-month birthday, and could reach upwards of 2,000 pounds when fully grown. “It’s never our intention to take a buffalo away from its mother,” Denice clarifies, recognizing most buffalo have a healthy fear of man. Ironically, Buck’s mother, Harley, was also bottledraised, and though she is friendly, she is a thriving buffalo with offspring of her own. Buck’s twin brother was not named, as most buffalo on the ranch remain nameless unless a situation requires them to be singled out and identified. Buck has not yet been reintroduced to his mother or brother. And while the family waits to decide whether Buck will stay on the ranch and have a herd of his own or be sold to a good home, they all agree — Buck is one lucky little buffalo. n

RLS Christian Day School principal. “This is a mission to provide Ramona families with a school option that will feed the children both spiritually and intellectually,” said Cheryl Williams, parent volunteer. “RLS Christian Day School has been providing children in Ramona with a great education for over 30 years. Our students have always tested well and will continue to do so. However, it’s time to upgrade what we have to offer our kids by incorporating a top-notch technical side to our program.

“I believe that the community of Ramona is going to see what is happening here and want to get involved.” RLS Christian Day School is the only Christian elementary school in the Ramona area serving preschool through sixth-grade students. The school has a long history of meeting both spiritual and academic needs of children of all faiths within the community. Community involvement is welcome. Contact Williams at 760-701-2240. n

Music Fest Team Says ‘Thank You’

T

he Sixth Annual Music Fest was a huge success, in no small part to the volunteers and club members who worked so hard to put it on. To each and every one of them, I thank you. The wrestling team from Ramona High School, your labor to haul the table and chairs from the trailers to each of the pavilions and hanging the soundproofing boards was invaluable. David Baker, it was like watching a conductor in a symphony the way you had the wrestling team choreographed to hang those boards. Members of Ramona Rotary and Ramona Kiwanis clubs who worked the raffles, food booth, admission table and auctions, you made every effort to make sure all our attendees were welcome. Thank you, members, who worked so hard before the event to make sure all was ordered, set up and scheduled to make everything run smoothly at the event. Our sponsors and donors, thank you for the valuable donations of cash and items for our auctions and raffles. A special thanks has to be given to Jane Tanaka, M.D., Riviera Oaks Resort, and Ramona Terrace Estates for their cash donations; Jon Hasz

of the Ramona Music Center, who pulled all the bands together; and Stone Brewing Co. for their generous donation. Because of all of the above, both Kiwanis and Rotary can continue to present scholarships and support the special community projects both clubs are known for. — Craig Jung, Music Fest VI Chair

Stone Receives Life Member Honors Doris Stone was named a life member of the Ramona Food & Clothes Closet. Stone has worked as a volunteer for more than 20 years, having served as one of the first cashiers when the store moved to its current location in 1994. She has worked on many special projects, including Share Your Christmas. Her dedicated service on the organization’s board of directors for many years has perhaps been her greatest contribution. Out of the hundreds of volunteers through the past 30 years, Doris is one of only 10 who have received the honor. Ramona Food & Clothes Closet Chairman Jeff Funk made the presentation.
