Cornerstone Therapeutic Riding Center has found a “forever home,” says Judy Beckett, founder and executive director. The nonprofit organization that offers therapeutic horseback riding to help improve the lives of wounded warriors and people with disabilities recently moved from its former location at Creek Hollow Ranch to a beautiful 10-acre location on Tin Cup Drive. “We are super excited,” says Beckett. “And it’s an

an opportunity to get the center ready for their clients. Beckett is looking forward to launching the center, where she will work with clients of their Wounded Warrior Program called Operation Saddle Up. They provide services to military service members from the San Diego Naval Medical Center Balboa who are in the process of recovery, and also work with Wounded Warrior Battalion Camp Pendleton. Cornerstone has assisted close to 400 wounded service members since it opened in September 2008.

The indiscriminate destruction dealt by an earthquake of that size, in a country with quite literally zero building codes and limited public infrastructure and resources, led to hundreds of thousands of local refugees taking to their vehicles, the streets or makeshift shantytowns, as mass graves
were filled with the bodies of those even less fortunate. While funds and foreign aid began pouring in almost immediately after the quake, corruption at all levels kept the vast majority of it from ever reaching those who needed it most. Even before the quake struck, Haiti was said to have more than 380,000 orphaned children struggling to survive. Many fear that this number
has more than doubled since. But shining through the rubble and despair is a beacon of hope for these children called the Rosemila Project. In a humble, three-story building on a nondescript parcel of land in the town of Gonaïves, roughly two hours north of the capital city of Port-au-Prince, a man named Pastor Maula and his wife, Elda, provide housing, schooling, faith, love and care for around 30 orphaned children at a time. idea to do a flash mob proposal. He messaged Lisa’s friends on Facebook. “Everyone was so overjoyed,” he said, boasting how adorable Lisa is and how much her friends and family love her not just because of her generosity, but because of the kindhearted deeds she’s always doing for others. Lisa’s friend Holly Darrah and stepmom, Lorle Roper, volunteered to help organize the proposal. “They both put a lot of effort into making it a special day,” said Stiltz, describing how they found a dance routine The couple moments after they were engaged. online that had simple-

typically ends as quickly as it starts. In this case, the flash mob concluded with a marriage proposal. Describing the events that led up to the Aug. 24 proposal, Stiltz shares how the couple met at a function in the fall of 2011. Dawn Greenwell, a mutual friend, approached them individually and told them about a dream she had where the duo were married and had a child. Both secretly laughed at the notion, until an opportunity to date presented itself.
“I had seen Lisa and thought she was pretty, said Stiltz. “But she was shy, and so was I. Then I heard her talking about roasting a turkey for Thanksgiving. I thought this was a good way for me to introduce myself, because I like to cook.” After a few informal dates, Lisa shared that she loves flash mobs. “She told me how she’d watch videos of flash mobs on YouTube and TV and how she always wanted to be involved in one.” When Stiltz started developing deeper feelings for Lisa, he decided, “I’m too old to be shy. I’m ready for a serious relationship.” The couple have been together ever since. “Once I realized I was crazy in love with her, I talked to her dad and asked permission to marry her. He said, ‘Absolutely!’” With rings in hand and her dad’s blessing, Stiltz came up with the
enough steps. With 20 of Lisa’s friends and family members on board, including some who had dance experience, Holly put an ad on Craigslist. Soon, friends of friends, extended family and even strangers were recruited to be part of the plan. Nearly 100 people signed up, and the trio hosted rehearsals in different parts of the county, including Collier Park in Ramona. As the date approached, Stiltz came up with an excuse to get Lisa to Balboa Park. He told her they were meeting friends at the fountain and then going to dinner. “It got a little hairy days before when Lisa started to tell me about a flash mob she’d seen on the Internet. I thought for sure she knew, but it turned out she didn’t have a clue.” As the couple rounded the corner, precisely on cue, a person sitting near the park fountain waved to
a flash mob had been on his bucket list, and was grateful he got to participate.” Lisa said, “It was unbelievable. It’s every girl’s dream come true.” Besides making new friends and having a oncein-a-lifetime experience, raw footage of the proposal was put on YouTube. It’s under “Lisa’s proposal.” “We like to say I have indefinite brownie points for the foreseeable future,” said Stiltz, telling how he will put some thought into future anniversaries, but that the wedding will be simple, at the beach, and is schedule for October 2014. “I like being creative and enjoyed putting this together. Seeing Lisa’s reaction was absolutely priceless!” n

an invisible friend. Music began playing, and two girls appearing to be ordinary park visitors started swaying in harmony. They were quickly joined by four others, then 10 more people, until 70 people were dancing in unison to the song “Cruise,” by Florida
Georgia Line. “At first she didn’t know what was going on. Even with friends and family dancing, she was in such awe, she didn’t see them.” As the song neared the end, Stiltz took Lisa by the hand and family members came from the crowd and placed a
tiara on her head. “I bent down on one knee and asked her to marry me. When she said yes, everyone in the mob cheered.” Stiltz thanked the dancers for coming, and in return was thanked by them. “One older gentleman named Gary told me being in

spent time with. But one girl in particular left a lasting impression. Her name is Wasnie, and she is 6 years old. Her 17-year-old sister Angeline is the only other Angeline that Mennocci says she has ever met. The sisters were united, cared for and kept together by the generosity of Pastor Maula and those who help the Rosemila Project. Wasnie, as Mennocci describes her, has the sweetest spirit and smile you can imagine. Whether sneaking up to hold your hand or begging for hugs, it was moments like these that “remind you why you’re here,” Mennocci says. “You don’t realize because they are so happy and have so much joy, but they have all come from such crazy hardships,” Mennocci states. “They are all miracle children; just to be as blessed as they are to have a full belly every day is an incredible gift.” Back home and working now as a freelance fashion designer, Angeline Mennocci has her eyes set on a return trip to Haiti to visit Pastor Maula, Elda and the children next summer. In addition to providing more aid and donations, Mennocci hopes to institute a sewing workshop so the Rosemila Project children may learn a new essential skill. Besides meeting the obvious goal of providing much-needed clothing and linens for the children and locals in need, Mennocci believes that the happiness, color and vitality that seem to spring from the Haitian culture may just translate into a fashion style that could be introduced in America, potentially providing a revenue stream for the Project that could go on to help countless more young Haitians in a land where the average citizen lives on just $1 a day. Angeline Mennocci’s path to fashion success may eventually lead though Los Angeles or Paris, but one thing is for sure, we would all do well to take a page out of her stylebook. therapeutic riding. “We strive to get kids successfully riding. These kids never thought they could do it, and they are truly in control,” says Beckett. The volunteer-driven organization is funded through grants, private donations, annual events and fundraising. They are always in need of funds, with the horses being the biggest expense, of course. “Horses are the cornerstone of our program,” she says. If the organization didn’t have horses, there wouldn’t be a program. Cornerstone’s horses not only need to be healthy, they need to be happy. Beckett says they need people to sponsor horses, students, and even sessions of Operation Saddle Up. “We are in a big growth phase and we need more volunteers,” she adds. Kim Rush, operations manager volunteer, is Beckett’s right-hand assistant. She works on office tasks and event organization. She even cleans stalls and is a backup to other volunteers to work with the clients and help with horse lessons. “I fill in the gaps,” Rush says. She started volunteering after she retired from the phone company and was looking for something to get involved in. It has been a rewarding decision. Rush says Cornerstone Therapeutic Riding Center

NJROTC Summer Activities By Wesley Richardson

lthough the Ramona High School Navy Junior Reserve Officers Training Corps (NJROTC) is primarily a classroom course, the unit participates in many active roles throughout the summer in the community. You may have seen them around at various events, like the fair, or serving as color guards around town. They have also been doing many things you probably do not know much about. Some cadets learned to sail at the annual Sail Academy at Fiddler’s Cove in Coronado, while others either went to Flagstaff or Irvine to participate in the vigorous one-week program of Leadership Academy. Toward the beginning of summer, you may have seen cadets digging up dirt and planting new flowers in front of the Ramona sign. If you remember the Summer Solstice Run, cadets provided
orientation, in which the older cadets teach the newer ones the basics of drills and the Chain of Command. More than 40 cadets attended and showed their enthusiasm for the upcoming year. In early August, the 201314 Chain of Command was announced as Commanding Officer, Cadet Lieutenant Commander Silva, and
Executive Officer, Cadet Lieutenant Carmona. Many other important jobs in charge of the company’s structure, such as a Community Service Officer, Supply Officer and Administration Officer, were announced as well. The foundation is set for another successful year, as the unit pursues its fourth straight Distinguished Unit honor. n

Many cadets went to help veterans in need with the VFW at the Annual Veterans Stand Down in San Diego. If you were wondering who was doing the dirty work at the Ramona Country Fair
and throwing away trash and sorting recyclables, those workers were NJROTC cadets. They also helped the Pearl Harbor Survivors in the Fourth of July Parade by carrying the flags around their float. Before the school year starts, new cadets have to learn the basics of NJROTC at the annual freshman
