1982 Honda Civic gets funereal send-off in New York A New York man said good-bye to his cherished 30-year-old Civic, Bluey, with a New-Orleans-style funeral procession that the whole community turned out for. A beloved Civic Bluey is dead after three decades of being loved and taken care of by Harry Ettling. The New York Daily News spoke with Ettling who said: “I’m not getting a new car. I need time to heal.” Not so blue anymore At one time, the car was a beautiful sky blue, prompting its moniker “Bluey.” By the time of its send-off, however, there was not much blue left for the rust. Ettling has lived in the Inwood community since he bought Bluey, and it has been well-known in the area. Because of its battered look, individuals have come to love the car. Bluey was beat up pretty quickly for the first time, according to Ettling. It occurred right after the car was purchased: “It got totaled along with three other parked cars on Fort Washington Avenue.” The car was in the 1992 Washington Heights riots where it was overturned, but it was uglier and fixed in just $1,500 and a few weeks. According to Ettling: “Everybody in the neighborhood knows this car. People have come up to me and said, ‘Ever since I was a little toddler, I’ve been seeing this car on the street.’ And that’s a beautiful thing.” A full life Ettling recognized he had to be done with Bluey when the floors were rusted so bad that it was dangerous. A used car dealer would not trade him in at that point, and Ettling was done with the car at that point. Ettling had a top hat, there was a marching band and Bluey had a bouquet on his hood during the funeral procession up Seaman Avenue on August 4. It was organized by Ettling and his neighbors. A police escort was there as well.

At the end of the procession, Bluey was hauled onto a flat-bed truck and taken to a junk yard where it could rest in peace.
