Hyundai to fight NHTSA over Sonata recall According to a press release Friday from the National Highway Traffic Safety Administration, a recall has been submitted for less than 15,000 Sonata Hybrid units. According to the National Highway Transportation Safety Administration, the recall is over a code violation regarding the center rear seatbelt. Recalls are fairly common, but for automakers to challenge the NHTSA is not. Hyundai says it is petitioning the recall to amend its terms. Seatbelts breach federal standards The Federal Motor Automobile Safety Standards say that seatbelts with “a release mechanism that detaches both the lap and shoulder portion at the lower anchorage point� are not allowed. That means that the front seats in the recalled vehicles are just find but the rear middle seatbelts have to be fixed. These seatbelts should be changed before sending the cars back to the owners. There are 14,728 2011-2012 Sonata Hybrids assembled after Dec. 2, 2010 impacted by the National Highway Transportation Safety Administration recall. Hyundai does not want recall Hyundai does not agree that there is really a safety risk with the seat belt problem. It will fix the 1,633 that have not been sold yet, but it does not want to have to fix the 13,095 that have already been sold and sent out to customers. National Highway Transportation Safety Administration petition to come Hyundai has said it intends to file a petition to the National Highway Transportation Safety Administration in try to amend the recall parameters. The federal safety regulator will not require Hyundai to inform owners of the recall until the matter of the petition is resolved. If the National Highway Transportation Safety Administration decides to reject the petition, however, Hyundai will again be required to inform all impacted owners of the recall campaign. A very safe vehicle Although there is a problem with the seat belts, the Sonata has been selected as a Top Safety Select from the Insurance Institute for highway Safety in 2012. It also got an 8.5 safety rating from the best Hybrid Automobiles list that U.S. News and World Report puts together. The car has such a fantastic safety record because of all the things involved in it such as a tire-pressure monitoring system, electronic brake-force distribution brake help, traction control, six airbags and anti-lock brakes.
