Mazda sends RX-8 to the rubbish bin Mazda has discontinued the RX-8, the sports automobile with the rotary motor that succeeded the legendary RX-7. Mazda had to can the model, as sales were too poor and there were too many struggles with emissions restrictions to continue to justify creating it. No more Mazda RX-8 As reported by USA Today, a very important announcement was made by the Mazda Motor Corporation. It said that the Mazda Motors RX-8 will no longer be produced by it. The vehicle will no longer be made after the 2011 RX-8 is all sold. The last of that car has already been produced too. There are only 219 at dealerships as of today, Aug. 24. Auto News reports that on August 1, there were only 300 left of the RX-8 automobiles. That means that there was only a 118 day supply left at that point. Mazda Motors is well recognized for using a Wankel rotary motor which uses a single triangular piston to rotate in the engine chamber making it very different from the traditional multi-cylinder engine, making the RX-8 a rarity already. From just a 1.3 liter plant, the RX-8 can get over 220 horsepower. Not several individuals buying There were two large factors that lead to the end of the RX-8. These integrated difficulties with emission regulation standards being met and sales dropping. The model had to be pulled from Mazda’s offerings in Europe as the automobile could not meet the emissions needs set by the European Union. The RX-8 sales have dropped drastically in the last few years also. CNET reports that last year, 1,134 MR-8s were sold. That means that from 2009 alone, there was a 49 percent decrease in sales. By the end of July of this year, there has been shown to be another massive decrease. It went down by 21 percent. In 2004, Mazda Motors sold 23,690 of the vehicles making it the best year. To make matters worse, a stronger Japanese yen and weaker American dollar led to Mazda Motors posting massive losses. Rotary continues The first rotary engine sports automobile made by Mazda was the Mazda Motors NSU Spider in 1964, according to the South African Independent Online. Since Mazda Motors is really the only major car company that makes the rotary engine sports car, several believe that the end of the RX-8 means the end of the motor. This is not the first time this sort of automobile was pulled. Another Mazda with a rotary motor was pulled once. After good first off sales, the Mazda Motors RX-7 had the same problem. In the early 1980s, the RX-7 sold about 50,000 vehicles a year after being introduced in 1978. It was pulled in 1995. This was just in the U.S. It took until 2003 for the RX-8 to arrive. There should not be any problems with emissions or fuel economy with the new vehicle Mazda is currently creating. The 16X has a 1.6 liter motor. The 16X is slated to be ready by 2017.
