Most luxury cars fail insurance crash tests

Most luxury cars fail insurance crash tests When we purchase luxury vehicles, we’re getting image, prestige, performance and comfort. According to recent collision test studies by the Insurance Institute for Highway Safety, we may not be buying safety, however. The Detroit Free Press reports that numerous mid-size luxury cars – among them the vaunted Mercedes-Benz C-Class – did not impress researchers throughout frontal collision tests. Not just getting hit in a luxury car Collision checks conducted by the Insurance Institute for Highway Safety were meant to illustrate just what happens to luxury vehicles when they strike a fixed object head-on. Twenty-five percent of the car’s front end strikes a five-foot rigid barrier at 40 miles per hour. Overall, the majority of the luxury cars tested did not fare well; experts expect that non-luxury models will fare as badly. And considering that the auto industry is watching, experts believe that brand new designs that are geared toward safety will start to appear because of the disturbing test results. There were 11 luxury vehicles tested, and they were all from the 2012 model year. Good and acceptable ratings were only given to three of the luxury vehicles: Infiniti G, Volvo S60 and Acura TL. If a vehicle gets a marginal or poor rating, it means there is severe chance of injury or death. The marginal ratings went to the Volkswagen CC, Lincoln MKZ, BMW 3 Series and the Acura TSX. The poor ratings were given to the Lexus ES 350, the Audi A4, the Lexus IS 250 and the Mercedes C-Class. Looking at airbag issues In the crash testing, VW CC’s door got completely taken off, according to Forbes. It also showed that Mercedes-Benz, Volkswagen and BMW all had problems with the seat belt not working fast enough after the first impact. This makes it easier for someone to hit their head in an accident. One other thing that was learned that was unexpected is that side air bags are not as much help on the subject of off-center frontal crashes. They do not deploy easily enough to help. Findings cause different reactions The IIHS’s findings were not accurate because they were unusually severe in an uncommon scenario, according to Mercedes-Benz. “As a leader in automotive safety, we have full confidence in the protection that the C-Class affords its occupants – and less confidence in any test that doesn’t reflect that,” said Mercedes in a written statement. Toyota was not upset, though it did point out that it has a ton of top safety picks. The Lexus
