OnStar glitch delays delivery of 60,000 GMs About 60,000 GM vehicles, already on lots, are being held from sale or delivery until the car maker impacts a fix in the OnStar warning system. Taking early action might have avoided a future, much more expensive, recall. Flaw in OnStar GM claims that, unless the airbag is deployed, the glitch will stop the alert system from contacting OnStar personnel in case of a crash. That means that rear-impact collisions of great severity could go unreported. General Motors was quick to point out that the glitch does not stop the airbags from deploying, nor does it stop the crash notification system from functioning in accidents in which the airbags do deploy. Except for that… There is still a crisis button on the OnStar system that will call the OnStar center quickly when pressed, and all other OnStar system functions work perfectly still. There is only the one small glitch. Automotive News points out that some models will have to be upgraded manually at a dealership to fix the issue, but the majority of the cars have been repaired remotely through a software flash sent by GM. What automobiles are affected? The automobiles impacted in the move are some 2013 Chevrolet Cruze, Equinox, and Volts, as well as the Buick Verano. Also from 2013 are some Cadillac XTS and ATs, also as the GMC Terrain. Some 2012 Cadillac SRX crossovers are also impacted by the issue. According to GM, the program will be fixed by the end of Sept. Owners were already advised in August if they had the issue. There are not very many of the vehicles sold to people who need to pay off their car loan yet. Most of them are still sitting at dealerships or are not produced yet. North America encounters issue General Motors explained that beginning in 2013, there will be OnStar systems accessible in Mexico in Buick, Cadillac, Chevrolet, and GMC automobiles. Mary Chan, president of GM’s Global Connected Consumer, said in the automaker’s press release: “OnStar’s expansion into Mexico will make OnStar the preeminent provider of automobile

safety and security services in Latin America. This is an important step as we will continue to grow GM’s connected vehicle solutions in other regions of the world in the coming months and years.” This will make it possible for OnStar to appear in all of North America.
